PSA: bot comments are taking over ao3
The above examples have been provided with the authors' permission to demonstrate what these look like.
Basic rundown:
They are all 3 sentences long
Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post
Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly
There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.
(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)
The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively “popular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.
So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.
I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.
First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?
And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, “post your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:
Using the phrase “pay-to-read model” in the same sentence as “qualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.
Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.
I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!
Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.
Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).
Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.
So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.
They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.
I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.
Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

… Did you know next week marks the fourth anniversary of the start of Skam France S3?
That’s four years since we saw Lucas and Eliott hanging out at a bus stop, four years since we fell in love with Lucas playing the piano, four years since the hedgehog and raccoon drawings, four years since Eliott wearing the Romance hoodie, … The list goes on!
I know right, time flies when you’re having fun! :slight_smile:
To celebrate, we want to challenge everybody to create some art inspired by the episode titles and post them in the right week on their platform of choice. It can be inspired by the episode itself, or one of the clips in the episode, or just be inspired by the title.
Obviously, we interpret ‘art’ in the broadest sense possible: visual art, digital art, written art, audio art - whatever you feel like really!
It doesn’t have to be long or polished, just create! I will write a little fic for one person who manages to do something for every week (just let me know, because I might miss some of your creations - feel free to tag me!).
Oh, and most importantly, the art you create doesn’t have to be Elu-centric! It doesn’t even have to be for Skam France - any Skamverse goes, as long as it’s inspired by the title of the S3 episodes! So even if you have never seen any Skam France, you can still let the creativity flow!
Have fun, and I’m looking forward to all the art popping up!

What is the SKAM Big Bang?
It is a fun fandom event where we combine our talents to celebrate and create new content for the SKAMverse. Writers write fics; betas provide writing support and proofread; and artists create artwork for the story. Then we begin posting everything on Ao3 over the summer, starting June 21, 2023.

What is your Skamverse story?
I only discovered SKAM in November 2021 and it saved my life. I was looking for new shows to watch after watching Young Royals, and I saw someone mentioning SKAM. I was completely hooked after one episode. During that time my mental health was bad, and especially SKAM France season 3 helped me get through my depression. I have never ever felt such a connection with a show and its actors to be honest, it's something so deep, like it is engraved in me (also literally because I have "minute par minute" tattood on my arm, haha).
Meeting Maxence and Axel and other SKAM fans in July was such an amazing experience, I wouldn't have wanted to miss that. I really hope to be able to meet them again some day.
Why are you excited to be participating in this year's Skam Big Bang?
I participated as an artist in the SKAM BIG BANG of 2022 and I am super excited to be part of the BIG BANG of 2023, not only as an artist, but as a mod now too! It feels like one big family and sharing the love for this show is something that I have never felt so deeply before. That's why I'm so thrilled on sharing this experience with you.
What would you say to someone who is feeling nervous about joining?
The SKAM family (or SKAMily as they like to call it) is so welcoming and helpful, we are all here for you. Don't hesitate on asking us questions, we have done this before and we love to help. It's such an awesome community and the BIG BANG brings all of us even closer.
