Let’s be honest, we all know someone who dislikes using digital technology in the classroom. You can spot them in the staffroom squinting at their cracked 2014 iPhone 6 screens and muttering unrepeatable words in frustration.
For these teachers, the very thought of using digital technology sends a violent shudder down their spines, and they’re often seen making the sign of the cross before entering the computer lab.
However, despite some reservations about using digital technology, there are so many reasons why a teacher should learn to embrace it in their classrooms.  When used correctly, digital tools can capture a student’s imagination, drive their critical and creative thinking skills and offer unique teaching opportunities to those ready to embrace it.
We know that digital technology helps students develop their soft skill set with lessons on real-life collaboration, problem-solving techniques, communication skills, editing videos, drafting emails, and adaptability. From 3D Printing to coding robots, technology provides learners with the skills they will need as life-long learners.
Of course, it’s important to remember that digital tools are there to supplement a teaching and learning program. They shouldn’t be used as babysitters or time-wasters.
As a teacher, you should invest time in learning about the hardware and software that is available to you at your school. It can transform your teaching and learning program and empower students in ways that are impossible to do so without it.

If you’re not a digital native, talk to someone who is. Most schools have an IT department who will help a willing learner upgrade their digital skills.
And if all else fails, shout out. I’m always happy to help a fellow tech-teacher in need. You can find me on Twitter @robkelytweets.
