Bringing home Miguel Hernandez 1965
Joan found out she was expecting again very soon after the wedding. Despite Jeffrey's less than enthusiastic response to a new sibling, Joan and Estevan were excited to build a family together. Miguel Hernandez was born in 1965.

Mr. and Mrs. Estevan Hernandez 1964
Joan and Estevan dated for six months before he popped the question and she said yes. He was gone for work a few days at a time, but Joan didn't mind. He was down to earth, didn't ask much of her, and cared about Jeffrey. They had a small ceremony in Oasis Springs and held the reception at the community center.

Andrew Lynch
Andrew Lynch, a lifelong resident of Brindleton Bay, passed away at his home last Thursday. He was born in 1893 in Brindleton Bay to Walter and Harriet Lynch and graduated from Brindleton Bay High School in 1911. He married the former Miss Mary Kahananui in 1912 and together they had four children. He served during the First World War. Andrew was a prolific author, and wrote several children’s books.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sons Claude and Wilbur. He is survived by his four sisters Mrs. Geraldine Munch, Miss Millicent Lynch, Mrs. William Bjergsen, and Mrs. Donald Bjergsen, two daughters Mrs. Gerald Le Chien and Mrs. Frank Jaleel, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Miss Copperdale Diner 1963
To keep food on the table and the lights on, Joan often worked dinner shifts at the local diner after all the kids were picked up from daycare. The owners were okay with Jeffrey sitting in one of the corner booths, quietly coloring or playing with a toy.
Customers were a mix of eclectic locals, tourists, and strangers passing through. One of those strangers was Estevan Hernandez, a trucker that came through Oasis Springs once or twice a month. He’d sit at the counter nursing a coffee until closing time, chatting with Joan.

With Jeffrey to take care of and no husband to bring home a paycheck, Joan started offering daycare at her home to the other moms in the neighborhood. It gave them the opportunity to work outside the home, as most people here were barely scraping by.

New home in Oasis Springs 1960
Once she was 18, Joan set out on her own with Jeffrey. Using her savings from her job, as well as a little help from her parents, she bought a one way bus ticket to Oasis Springs. No one would know her, there were certainly no hip Beatnik boys to fall for, and most importantly, it was cheap. Joan was able to afford a small trailer home.

Once her condition became more publicly known, Joan was expelled from school, despite her good grades. With a few months until her baby would be born, Joan took up a job at a local diner to build up her savings. Though her parents were supportive of her and would help her care for her baby, Joan didn't want to be a burden.

They'd been dating for nearly a year when Joan discovered she was pregnant, despite she and Jake being careful. She told her parents first, who reassured her everything would be alright. When she told Jake, he clammed up and told her being a dad isn't his style, and made up an excuse to leave. Joan tried calling and writing him, but he never answered.

55 Joan's high school days
Now a teenager, Joan was one of the hippest girls in school. Her parents gave her more freedom than any of her friends' parents did, giving her no curfew and letting her pick her own clothes. She'd wear jeans and skin-hugging pants to school and get sent home immediately to change into a skirt. Some parents thought Joan was a bad influence on their kids - the daughter of Bohemians, hipsters, beats - but it didn't faze Joan in the slightest.

54 Lynch holidays
The Le Chiens traveled to Brindleton Bay for the holidays this year and stayed with Madeline's father, Andrew. Her sister Irene, her husband Frank, and their children Ruth, Kurt, and Clifford, as well as Claude's widow and children, Marie, Stanley, Steven, and Lily, all came as well. It was the first time they had all been together since Wilbur and Claude's memorial services.
