It’s been a long, long while.
I’ve been a West Seattle resident for a month now. It’s been extremely stressful, almost everything in my life changed, but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
I’m now the head of visual merchandising for a company, and my want/need to photography is slowly coming back. I feel it, and I’ve missed it.
I’ve been doing a lot of exploring, self finding (I don’t know like how this sounds, but it’s the best way to describe it), a lot of hanging out with Kevin, and really just enjoying myself. Now I’m expecting my life to get hectic with my new job, and I can’t wait. I want to be busy all the time, but busy doing things I love.
Expect to see stuff from me soon. I’m also picking up my L. Green project again soon - don’t think I forgot about that.
(Right outside my door, West Seattle.)

'I remember thinking: ‘What the hell are we doing here? Why are we fighting this war on the side of a lonely mountain in Afghanistan where there are no people?’ It just seemed like the craziest place for a young man to lose his life.'
In this video, Reportage photojournalist Lynsey Addario recounts some the most powerful and harrowing moments of her career, including an embed with the US military in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. Read more.

We were so used to covering hundreds of miles each day we almost missed the Redwoods on our way up the coast. We did pass up the national park, but ended up here instead, right as the sun was setting. It’s one of the evenings that really stood out, and I tend to replay it over and over again in my head.

L. Green,
There’s been so many of you lately! I honestly get at least a letter a week, and I’m still humbled and excited every time I do. I wanted to give you all an update on the project because some of you sent me letters nearly six months ago and haven’t gotten a response from me yet. For the record, I am so sorry about that.
The project took a back burner for ages (clearly), and about a month ago I started to revisit it and put out for submissions again. This time, the response was 10x that from several months ago. You guys are so interested in this project, I’ve gotten letters from all walks of life. Seriously, every single letter is different from another. I love reading all of your stories.
Some photographs I have planned out! Unfortunately, some photographs also require specific places, weather, things like that, so some will take longer than others.
But please promise I haven’t forgotten about a single one of you. I have a special box on my desk where every single letter goes once I read them, and have pages of notes for images in my notebook. And from my bed, I have to stare at my desk, so essentially I’m almost always looking at your letters/the box they live in.
Thank you all for being a part of this with me, and for being patient. The appreciation can’t even be described.
xxxo

Winter means sickness, and that means I'm snowed in with strep throat. 😷 But, I got to check out my new photo book I got from Iron & Resin, and I love it. I would grab yours if you're into photography, motorcycles, livin' the good life, being outside, traveling, and skateboarding. #ironandresin #lifeorbust #traveling #photography #photographybook #lifestyle

These are among the photos that spoke to L.A. Times photo editors over the past week. Much more news photography from around the world in their Photos of the Week roundup.

A Call for Submissions!
This post is a call for submissions. I have a new photo series I would like to do, and am extremely excited about, but it cannot happen (literally, it can’t) without submissions.
I plan to start a series where you send me a letter. The letter can beanything, doesn’t even have to start with “Dear Rikki”: stories, confessions, memories, usual ‘ol letters, anything you desire can be sent to me. And with that, I will take a photograph that reminds me of it. And in return for your letter, I will send you a print of the photo I took. 4x6, with a little note from me.
I want this to be as anonymous as possible, so I am asking everyone to put “L. Green” as their name with their return address instead of their actual names. No names on the letters, change names in the stories if you like. I will have no idea who you are, and I want to keep it that way. I want this body of work to be as refreshing/freeing for you as it will be for me.
I really do hope I get submissions and some of you are wanting to participate.
Below is where you can send your letters to:
Rikki E. Grey 142 E. Rowland Madison Heights, MI 48071
Thanks, and hopefully we’ll be working together soon. Oh, and if you could spread this around, it would be appreciated!

This was good read - I highly suggest it.

The purpose of writing about this is not to tell you how I ended up traveling the world and taking photos of some of the most beautiful places on Earth. My point is to tell you that believing in yourself, getting started on working toward your goals, and taking some big chances can end up being the best thing that ever happens to you. It worked for me and continues to work for me, especially in those times when I’m discouraged or life is just plain kicking me in the teeth.

Here's how I'm feeling creatively these days.
I'm in this rut, and I haven't found the "thing" to get me out of it yet. Is this how writers block feels? If so, I hate it. I loathe it, even.
Everytime I open to edit, or think "hm, maybe I'll go out and shoot myself rather than a client today!", I get anxious. It's weird, I've never been in this situation before - where the one thing I always counted on to make me feel better now makes me anxious.
But! I've still been doin' the thing, in hopes that one day I'll wake up and it'll be back to normal - where I love editing, shooting anything/everything, and it was my outlet. Only time will tell.
If anyone has tips or advice, please send it my way.

"It’s funny. When you leave your home and wander really far, you always think, ‘I want to go home.’ But then you come home, and of course it’s not the same. You can’t live with it, you can’t live away from it. And it seems like from then on there’s always this yearning for some place that doesn’t exist. I felt that. Still do. I’m never completely at home anywhere."

Editing images from my time on the West Coast/PNW, and also printing out some memories to add to my photo boxes. This Instax Mini Printer was one of the best gifts I've ever been given. It's been a good day off from my day job. #editing #myoffice #instax
