That trailed off ‘but’ warranted a semi-amused scoff, his eyes momentarily abandoning Rian’s just to look anywhere else in the distance. It had been an absentminded reaction. “But?” Jake asked as he looked back at them, his eyebrows raised in an inquiring manner. Truth be told, he was curious to see what they would say if anything at all. As far as he was concerned, he did his own thing —- and that only involved people he could punch for some release, not that Rian knew about it. “Oh, wow,” he began, putting a hand to his chest feigning surprise, his voice monotone as he kept his eyes on them, “was that a compliment?” His question held a somewhat teasing tone as a small smirk appeared on his cut lips, playing into their next words as well. “As tempting as it sounds, I have work tonight and I have to be in one piece.”

Rian watched as he looked away, offering a wave of their hand when he looked back at them. “I think you know the answer to that,” a slight smirk formed on their lips before tilting their head to the side. Did Rian know the answers themselves?  ( Not really  ). But did he need to know that? No. Are they trying to get an answer out of him?  No, not really. The idea of him getting worked up on what they say, and trying to figure out what they mean, is enough for them to say that. The moment Jake put his hand on his chest, they rolled their eyes. Stroke his ego, and he changes his face expression -- they prefer his blank expression. “Oh, don’t get too caught up on that, you’ll go back to being boring in no time,” they offered a smile. “So, you-” they started before stopping themselves. One compliment was enough, but two compliments?  His head might explode from his ego. They pressed their lips together as they hummed, standing there in silence for a moment, “Are you admitting I beat you? ”

Jake scoffed at Rian’s words, shaking his head slightly before he gave them a look. He’d almost find their words amusing if he wasn’t over the day already. “I’m not milking anything,” he began, absentmindedly rubbing his right index finger and thumb together, “and what people think they can do is none of my business.” It should be, especially if it involved people thinking something could be done about his whole demeanor, about his whole self. “But I appreciate the curiosity,” he told them, added with a tone that almost sounded as if he was… being playful. Of course, his expression didn’t match the words that had just left his mouth. Another amused scoff escaped him, soon after he heard their words. A smirk appeared on his lips and he held it there for a few seconds before he spoke again, “If I told you, I’d have to kill you.”

“Noted,” Rian nodded their head as they gave him a once over. They weren’t completely convinced, but they weren’t going to waste their time on that. “You’re not wrong about that, but,” giving him another once over. He didn’t get all fucked up because he was minding his own business. Well, there’s a possibility of that - but they have a feeling there’s something more to it. They could sense the change of his tone, if they knew any better they could say it was almost playful like. It wouldn’t be the first time they notice the change in his tone, but like always, his expression always stays the same. And like always, Rian will try to change that, maybe this time they’ll be successful maybe they won’t. “What can I say, sometimes you’re interesting,” they shrugged their shoulders. They laughed at Jake’s words, shaking there head before an amused smile form on their lips, “I’d like to see you try.” With five years of military service under their belt, they’re confident they can take Jake down.

The bag hung down from Jake’s left hand, leaving his busted-up right hand free; free to tighten into a small fist, free to scroll down his phone or free to raise up to almost swat Rian’s hand away when they touched his face —– thankfully, it hadn’t been necessary because they took their hand away almost as soon as they touched his face. And when they had done it, he couldn’t help but wince ever so slightly. “Nothing I’m not used to,” which he was, even without the whole… underground fighting. “Are you gonna keep those comin’? The dog jokes?” He began, his eyebrows rising, “Because I don’t know where that whole thing started but it’s already gettin’ old.” He didn’t mind the thing in particular, just that it was said in the first place —– everyone and everything was annoying to him at a certain point and Rian just seemed to have the technique down to a T.

“Not to used to? ” they shifted their weight to their left leg, “Really milking that bad guy image. How many people are fighting to fix you? ” He is the human definition of the trope that almost everyone goes after, thinking they can be the ones to fix whatever is broken. The insensitivity of it all, to treat someone - a  person - as some broken toy to fix. Maybe that little comment hit home closer to them than they thought, but they mentally shook that off and brought their attention back to Jake. “Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror?  You look like a puppy,” they laugh with a shake of their head. “Well, a beaten-down puppy right now, who did you piss off? ”

The fight from the night before had taken enough out of him —- granted, he was there out of need and not because he wanted to (or maybe he did want to and just told himself it was because he needed it, just to make himself feel better about the person he’d become), but sometimes he had to wonder just how worth it the whole thing was. Even breathing hurt and he was sure there were a few ribs that just weren’t broken out of luck. He’d won but at what cost, really? It also didn’t help the bruises, the cuts on his lips and nose, and the pain all over that he’d run out of supplies to patch himself up with. So, that was the first thing he did once he woke up and managed to get ready and out of the house. He was coming out of the pharmacy when he bumped into someone —- and what would be normally painless became something that hurt all over, which caused him to let out a small groan and breathe out a curse word or two. He wasn’t in good shape. “Sorry ‘bout that,” he spoke, before looking at the person he’d bumped into. “You good?”

Rian never liked being touched without permission - but getting bumped into? That is something that can easily set them off, depending on their mood for the day. Lucky for this person, they have been in a good mood - and - have been working on keeping themselves calm. The somewhat familiar voice went to their right ear, which would make anyone look to the right of them. The only reason why they knew different was that the person bumped into the left side of them. “Yeah, I’m fine,” they turned to the side, raising an eyebrow when they realized it was Jake. “Someone really did a number on the puppy, huh? ” they reach out their index finger to tilt his head a certain way for a better view. They let a smirk appear on their face as they place their hand by their side, knowing their touch would agitate them. “What did you do? Pee on someone’s shit? ” they tilted their head to the side, “didn’t think potty training would be such an issue.”
