GIVE YOUR KITCHEN CABINETS A FRESH NEW LOOK
Tumblr media
Want to freshen up your kitchen cabinets, but you don’t want to spend a fortune on brand new cabinets that fit into your living space perfectly, simply update your existing cabinets with a fresh coat of paint. This is where professional cabinet painters in Toronto  will come in handy.
Step One: Shop
Decide on a color and style, and pop down to your local hardware or home improvement store to buy all the equipment and paint you need. Or buy a convenient painting kit. Modern paints offer you plenty of choices, look for something that works with your style and budget.
Step Two: Prep
Remove the cabinet doors and number them so that they will be quick and easy to put back in the right place when you’ve finished painting. Remove all hardware, like hinges and handles, from the cabinet doors and draws. If the doors are foil-wrapped or laminated, de-gloss the cabinets before you add your primer or paint.
Step Three: Sand
Sand the doors so that the new paint adheres properly to the cabinets – even when using chalk paints your cabinets require a light sanding before you paint. You can sand the cabinets by hand but it is a big job and an orbital sander works wonders for large, flat areas. For hard to reach places and delicate work, use a sanding sponge and sanding block.
Step Four: Paint
Work in a well ventilated area as some paints give off a lot of fumes. Apply the paint with either a brush or a high-volume, low pressure (HVLP) paint sprayer
Step Five: Finishing touches
Once the paint is dry all that remains is to put new hardware on your refinished cabinet doors and draws and put everything back together and your kitchen will look as good as new. If you don’t want to go the DIY route, there are plenty of cabinet painters in Toronto who specialize in cost effective paint solutions, and will be more than happy to do the job for you.

HOW TO DISTRESS YOUR CABINETS USING CHALK PAINT
Tumblr media
If you’re looking for a no fuss, no prep way to give the cabinets in your Calgary home a makeover, then look no further than chalk paint. This is the perfect way to get a distressed look without the hassle of sanding and priming. All you need to do before you start is thoroughly clean your cabinets with a mild dish washing detergent.  Calgary cabinet painters can help if you you don’t want to do it yourself.
Get out the hammer to give your cabinets a bit more character Unlike regular paints, the key to getting a great distressed look with chalk paint is to make your cabinets look old, and a bit banged up, before you start painting. If you want to give your cabinets a bit of extra character, rub them with a high grit sandpaper, bang the edges with a hammer, and use a screw to make small groupings of round holes to mimic wormholes.
Slap on the paint Using chalk paint to give the cabinets in your Calgary home a distressed look is quick and easy. And since the look you’re going for is rustic, you don’t even have to do it neatly. Simply apply your first coat of paint in a haphazard figure of 8 pattern. If you are happy with the look after that then you are done painting. But if it’s not quite what you want, then add another coat of paint after the first layer has dried.
When you are happy with coverage, use a bit of sandpaper to enhance the look. Go over areas that would naturally receive the most wear and tear, like corners, edges, drawers and raised details. Start with a light sanding and keep going until you have achieved the desired effect. Finally clean off the dust and apply a layer of chalk paint sealing wax. Use a clean, lint free cloth to massage the wax into the cabinets. Then use a microfiber cloth to remove any excess wax.  It’s that simple to give your kitchen cabinets a quick makeover.

MAKE YOUR CABINETS LOOK AS GOOD AS NEW
Tumblr media
If you are faced with a situation in which the current look of your home is less than inspiring, it is high time to make some changes. One creative and cost-effective idea to consider is painting your cabinets. It is one of the easiest things to do and the changes are instantly visible. Of course, if you are not a painter, you will need to find a professional who will properly take care of the work. In this case, you should be thinking about professional cabinet painters in Calgary, of which there are plenty with very good reputation. Keep reading for more.
Why you should do it
First of all, cabinet coatings become worn out as time goes by due to effects of sunlight as well as daily usage. Since cabinets are usually among the most used objects in homes, this will inevitably happen. Fortunately, there is a simple solution that also does not cost much. By applying a new coat of paint to your cabinets you will not only bring new life to your home, but you will also increase its value. In other words, cabinet repainting allows you to kill two birds with one stone.
How to choose the right paint
This is probably the hardest part in the whole process of painting the cabinets. It is advisable to consult a designer before making a decision. After all, they are professionals and know what colors and hues will suit your home best. Next, you should decide which brand of paint you would like to use. Of course, this depends on your preferences and the specifics of your cabinet. It is probably best to consult a professional in order for the result to be satisfactory.
Feel free to give your cabinets a new look
Refreshing the paint on your cabinets can greatly change the look of your home. Of course, this does not mean that you should do it by yourself, especially if you have no prior experience. This is exactly why professional cabinet painters in Calgary should be on your mind as the go-to solution. Instead of focusing on sheer manual labour, leave it to the professionals and, instead, focus on the bigger picture, i.e. what colours and designs to choose to make your refurbished cabinets stand out even more. This should prove to be an easy decision that will require little effort and produce some staggering results.

CABINET PAINTING IDEAS
Tumblr media
Cabinet painting, or cabinet refinishing, is becoming a popular DIY project for design-savvy homeowners. Not only is this cost-effective home makeover doable for patient DIYers, it can completely change the aesthetics of your kitchen and increase resale value. With so many colours and finishes to choose from, where do you start?
Here are some ideas for cabinet refinishing:
Keep it neutral.
If you’re feeling a little shy of colour, keep things light and natural. Most kitchens look great in light earthy tones, beiges and whites. It creates a clean and welcoming atmosphere and can make a smaller kitchen feel larger. Plus, these neutral hues go with anything, so you can go crazy with bold accents like backsplash and home décor.
When comes to cabinet painting or painting your house in general, neutral colours are always a smart idea if you plan on selling your home. You want to give buyers a clean and light canvas so they can visualize themselves in the home and do not want to scare them off with your bold colour tastes.
Bright, bold and beautiful.
Colour is making a major comeback into the kitchen. Homeowners are adding energy and vibrance into the space by painting the cabinets a bright colour, instead of the usual wood tones, black or white. Popular colours are golden yellow, emerald or turquoise. If you want to take this route, be careful that your cabinet colours don’t clash with your wall colour. It can make the space feel too hectic and even too dark. If you go bold with cabinet painting, consider a light, neutral tone for the walls. Check out these colour ideas for painting kitchen cabinets.
Two toned kitchen cabinets.
Having two different colours, typically one for the top cabinets and a different for the bottom, is a big trend in kitchen renovations. Whether you paint your cabinets yourself or hire a company that offers Cabinet painting. Calgary homeowners have a lot of choices when it comes to dual-colour kitchen cabinets. Trending these days are white on top and black on the bottom or a bold colour on the bottom and a neutral on top. If you feel nervous about multiple colours, consider a neutral tone for your wall cabinets both top and bottom and a bold colour for you island to add that splash of colour.
Wide open shelving on top.
If you can keep your dishes stacked neatly, open shelving in place of upper cabinets is a trendy way to give your kitchen that two-toned appearance. Paint the wall behind the shelves to add a splash of colour and to better showcase your finest dinnerware or home décor on the shelves. For the bottom cabinets, choose a neutral colour that goes well with the colour behind the shelving up top. If neatness is not your thing, this style can make your kitchen look messy in a flash, so make sure you’re committed to keeping the shelves tidy.

OPTIONS FOR A KITCHEN CABINET UPGRADE
Tumblr media
Your kitchen cabinets will make up the biggest component of your kitchen renovation. Not only will they play the biggest role in how your kitchen looks and functions when the renovation is complete, they will also be the most expensive item on your home improvement list. When it comes to upgrading your cabinets, you have many options, ranging from high-cost to relatively low. You can get more advice in this kitchen cabinet buying guide.
Here are some options for a kitchen cabinet upgrade.
Custom Cabinets
Custom cabinetry is exquisite. You can have it designed to perfectly match your needs for design and function. Your brand-new cabinets will be built with high-quality materials by expert craftsman and will be built strong, able to last a lifetime. Because they are custom-built, you aren’t limited to a certain layout or design, and you get to choose everything from the wood, hardware and other materials used. Custom cabinets are the most expensive choice, but if you’re planning on staying in your home for a long time, years of enjoyment will make the investment well worth it.
Stock Cabinets
Stock cabinets can be made of wood or a type of laminated particle board. Depending on where you purchase them from, they can be made on a factory assembly line or made in multiples by a large cabinet company. The benefit to stock cabinets is that you can purchase and bring home your cabinets on the same day and don’t have to wait for them to be built before you can start renovating. They are also less expensive than custom cabinets.
Buyers should beware of poorly constructed stock cabinets made of cheap materials. Check that the panels are at least ½ inch thick. With stock cabinets, you are also limited to certain layouts and features in your cabinetry, but if that doesn’t bother you it could be worth the savings.
Cabinet Refacing
If your original cabinet boxes are functional and you like the layout of your kitchen, consider cabinet refacing. This is when you replace your dated cabinet doors, drawer fronts and any other exposed panels with new ones. You can totally change the look of your kitchen at a fraction of the cost of custom or even stock cabinetry.
Cabinet Refinishing
Cabinet refinishing is like cabinet refacing, but instead of replacing those exposed components of your kitchen cabinets, you refinish or paint the ones you have. A professional company that offers cabinet painting Calgary will properly prepare, sand and refinish your cabinets using the stain or paint colour of your choice. This last option is the most affordable and is a smart choice if you have sturdy cabinet boxes, a functional layout and you are renovating on a budget. Read more articles about cabinet refinishing.

UNDERSTANDING PERMITS FOR BUILDING A DECK IN EDMONTON
Tumblr media
Building a deck addition is a smart investment and a great way to enhance your outdoor living space. Not only will a new deck provide a space for spending time with family and outdoor recreation, it will also boost your home’s resale value. Deck builders in Edmonton will obtain any necessary permits required for your deck project, but if you plan on building it yourself, the responsibility is yours.
Failure to obtain the proper permits when building a deck could cause some annoying and expensive issues down the road if you decide to sell your home. Getting permits after construction is always more difficult and costly than getting them before.
When do I need a permit for building a deck?
If you live in the City of Edmonton, a permit is not required if the deck you are building is less than 0.6 metres high and if it is entirely built in the back yard. It also has to be compliant with the City’s zoning bylaws, ensuring that it is following rules and regulations for the development of land in Edmonton.
There are two types of permits: development permits and building permits. A development permit is required if your deck is built on a corner lot, front yard or side yard of any lot and if it is 0.6 metres high. A building permit is required if your deck is higher than 0.6 metres above grade and for any deck that might serve as the principle entrance of the dwelling.
There are special permits required if your deck is higher than usual, above 1.8 metres. If that’s the case, you should call 311 to speak with a Building Technical Advisor. Remember that uncovered decks cannot cover the gas meter or gas shut off valve.
How do I apply for a permit?
If your deck doesn’t meet the criteria and you must obtain a development or building permit, you can complete and submit the Residential Development & Building Application Form and a deck design form. When you submit the forms, you are also required to send a set of drawing that identify the height of the structure, property lines, additional features like benches or pergolas, deck construction details and a site plan showing the location of the deck with it’s dimension and all other structures.
If you plan on installing a hot tub on your deck, both the deck and the hot tub application are treated as one application and are processed together at the same time and for the same fee. If you have any questions about building permits in Edmonton, contact them by dialing 311.
