Nothing like interview nerves to make me go crazy with headcanons as a distraction so now I'm thinking about Ranpo's confidence and how it's largely fake. Like a little cat puffing itself up to look big. Ranpo's hiding in the shelter of Fukuzawa's lie but he still feels like he's not that good, can't really be that much smarter than everyone else, and even if he is there's no one who can catch his mistakes before they blow up and hurt people. He projects confidence because he must be confident, he must be right all the time, because if he isn't people will get hurt or die. His people will get hurt or die.

So he laps up praise like a starving kitten because that validation makes him feel like maybe he really can keep them safe. Maybe he does deserve to be at Fukuzawa's side, to be among all these people with super powers - some of whom are nearly smart enough to keep pace with him.

And that's why he didn't crumble during the cannibalism arc or the following Perfect Murder mini arc - he's always waiting for the awful moment of failure so it couldn't shock him when it finally came. It was exactly what should have been happening all along. And it's why he hit back hard and fast in response, violence and bloodthirst and desperation driving carrying him to take out Chuuya and blackmail Mushitaro - he always feels like he's cheating, he always feels like it's nothing but his own cunning keeping him in place in life, so he's right in his element when they stop playing by the rules and start playing dirty.

(Spoilers for third light novel 🥺)I had to use reblog cuz there’s a lot to say.

So Ranpo was sheltered away from the world in the countryside because his parents knew he was smarter than the average person and wanted to keep him away so he didn’t get into any danger for his smarts and all. Ranpo being kept away resulted in him not knowing or understanding that the world didn’t think like him,he just assumed that everyone was as smart as him since his parents would humble him and tell him that he was just a kid so he didn’t understand adults.

His parents unfortunately did not have enough time to protect him until he grew up to learn that the world was much different from him as they died due to an ‘accident’(?) when Ranpo was 14. Ranpo then needed to find a job in the wide open world that he didn’t know about. He went to the police in Yokohama to find a job there since his father told him that should anything happen to him,there was a trusted friend he had at that police department in Yokohama that would help him.

Ranpo tried to work in the police department but got kicked out when he called out one of the higher up officers on mistreating women(if I’m not wrong🥲). Ranpo,confused on why everyone didn’t see the truth of the officer,continued trying to find work as a construction worker(in which he couldn’t handle the labour so he ran off) and a mailman(in which he threw a letter away because he deduced there was nothing important in it and got fired) even more confused on why people were ignoring the truths that were staring straight in their faces.

He then associates everyone as a monster since he doesn’t understand them and is convinced that it’s just because he’s a kid and doesn’t understand the adult world. This is why Ranpo eventually bursts when he witnesses everyone paying for a play that had a mystery in it that was way too obvious and kept screaming the question on why everyone is so complicated and confusing when every problem’s solution is so obvious and staring straight at their faces.

Poor bby was terrified and scared because why is everyone so confusing and why is he the only one who’s pointing out all the obvious things. For the longest time,he felt so isolated from people because they didn’t understand him and ignored what he thought was obvious. They fired him,mistreated him,and only scolded but never explained to him why everyone was different from him. In his meltdown,he even stated that ‘only his parents understood him and now they were dead’ which really emphasises on how lonely and alienated he felt.

When Fukuzawa presents the reason on why he was different was because he had an ability (he didn’t intend to be so dramatic but he had to lie so the poor boy wouldn’t break),he becomes attached to the glasses since the reason he had suffered for so long seeing everyone as a monster was because of an ability and not because he was something different and alone in the world. He was suffering from the confusion and the loneliness because of his ability and that it wasn’t just him.

With the glasses,he felt accepted and he had some place to belong(especially since he was 14 at the time and was about to break from all the confusing adults in his life and needed desperately on something to fall on),with the ability users so he wasn’t alienated and all. This is why he’s so demanding that he does have an ability because his world built on a lie he’s grown to depend on and it’s so hard to let go of the lie because that’s facing the fact that he doesn’t belong anywhere because his intelligence is so high that it wasn’t even human and he didn’t belong with the ability users because his smartness wasn’t an ability.

How Ranpo’s parents raised him and how their died is honestly a mystery and the jobs he worked before the agency(which Fukuzawa built for Ranpo to be safe in and continue his work as an ‘ability user’) were skimmed over in the light novel so we didn’t have much insight on years before Ranpo met Fukuzawa.

That’s like a brief summary of untold stories of the agency. I’m pretty sure someone else could explain it better but I’ll put this up here for a while. I suggest you all give it a read because I cried at the last pages🥲
