One thing good to point out is that the demographics of all this Shounen manga is people that are still learning the kanji alphabet and they may not know how to read certain characters so, if possible, publishers will likely use hiragana (fewer characters & easier to remember). That's the reason all the pages have furigana (small characters next to the regular size ones), basically, saying how to read the 'complex' characters.

With the above said, I have checked 5 Japanese volumes and there 'らんま' is only used twice (max. trice in case my memory fails me):

-In the first pages when Genma, in a terrible handwriting, sent a postcard to Sowun telling him that they will come. Here we know Sowun knows nothing about Genma's son so it makes sense to write his name in a simpler manner (hiragana)

-The other one when Ranma is announced in the gymnastic fight vs Kodachi. Here the written language allows to play with the ambiguity of Ranma's identity

In all other cases Ranma is written in kanji: 乱馬

I gotta say that a pet peeves of mine used to be when people called Ranma, “Ranko Saotome”, because:

1) Ranma never identified himself as “Ranko” and it wasn’t even a thing in the story; it was exclusively for his mom so she doesn’t find out who he was. Besides, it’s hardly used because there aren’t many chapters about Nodoka pre-revelation anyways.

2) He, as “Ranko”, was supposed to be Akane’s cousin (something I’ve always found funny and sweet, btw? I mean, how he went for being her cousin before “Soun’s niece” when it makes more sense for someone to relate oneself first to the head of a family when introducing themselves). SO, in any case, his full name should be something like,

Ranko Tendo

Ranko [whatever Akane’s mom maiden name was]

Ranko [whatever was the surname of Soun’s or Akane’s mom’s sister’s spouse]

Plus, Rumiko Takahashi said she named him Ranma because she liked how it sounded for both boys and girls, so… it’s Ranma, guys. I think it’s cute how in Japanese they use 早乙女乱馬 for his real self and just らんま for his cursed form and this is why I also consider this is an important detail: Because that’s the title of the manga. らんま½. In hiragana too. Like if the essence of the manga IS fem!ranma (it really is).
