The dance of the devi
Flowers for the goddess
in my alta-dyed hands,
I offer them at the lotus feet
of the Mother of the Universe.
***
Gentle blues of the skies move out
And Surya slowly rises from slumber
in its captivating regal glory,
its golden rays adorning
the Devi’s forehead.
***
I behold the golden complexioned goddess
set in stone with a benevolent smile.
My anklets lay at her feet
with turmeric and vermillion coating
some of those melodious bells.
***
A sweet summer breeze blows by.
A bell jingles and a lotus from her garland
falls to the brown earth at my dust laden feet.
A jingle of bangles and anklets,
A low hum of a mysterious yet beautiful tune,
And a voice sings,
A voice that I can recognize anywhere –
The Devi has risen!
***
Draped in silks and gold,
fragrant garlands around her limbs,
She steps outside to my courtyard,
A very humble stage for the one
who is the abode of this entire Universe.
The sun makes her ornaments gleam,
yet her moon-like face is the brightest.
My anklets are around her feet
But what truly do I own
in this illusionary world?
What I receive –
Beauty, intelligence, riches and power,
All comes from her.
***
And by the bright yellows of dawn
I see her dance in my courtyard.
Wherever her feet travel, little blooms arise
and where her hands softly touch,
Golden dust flies.
She twirls round and round
And I see the might cosmic Gods
Swirling around her magnificence.
Her veil, the illusionary veil,
which she playfully casts
around this world
escapes the clutches
of her beautiful braided hair.
And now I see. Clearly.
***
She leaps into the air,
Resembling a warrior
and a warrior she is,
for she is the Devi,
The ferocious Bhairavi,
The invincible Durga,
the slayer of Mahishasura.
She is the dark one, Kali,
The slayer of Raktabija.
***
Her dance of grace and elegance
transforms to a dance of death and destruction.
She is Shivatrinayani and Maheshwari.
She leaps and twirls with her trident
and her anklets and the temple bells ring
harmoniously,
Just like the eternal forces of nature.
Devi is Nitya, the eternal one.
***
I, a mere mortal woman, a devotee
akin to the turmeric and vermillion on her feet
watch the goddess dance in all her glory.
I see all the worlds and this vast universe
dance with her,
And maybe it is really true:
That everything in the world dances.
Laasya performs in every object,
in the largest to the very smallest.
***
And then I see the radiant one
stretch her palm to me.
I see my world in her hand
And clasp her hand tightly.
Which daughter lets go of her mother’s hand?
So we dance.
***
Stars and galaxies, planets and cosmic bodies,
Fire and snow, gods, demons and mortals,
I see her in everything
And this is the Dance of Realisation.
The music, the drums and the bells slowly fade
But the dancing soul now awakened
dances in ecstasy.
I see, I hear, I dance, I understand everything now.
***
The Devi twirls, spins, sings, smiles and laughs
And finally heads to her abode, to Shiva, her life.
My life, a thread in her hands,
I now submit to her eternal play
of this Life’s Dance.
***
I haven't written poetry in a while now. Somehow I couldn't capture this in a story format, it felt bland and very large and long. I didn't like it. The poem format perhaps gives me a little peace to form the vision I once had a few years ago while meditating on the goddess. I will obviously edit this later for the book, but for now here's the first draft poem for the book

Some months back, if anyone had told Abhimanyu that he would be getting married soon, he wouldn't believe them.
Him and marriage? Pfft.
Abhimanyu scoffs in the face of marriage.
Samba would love to add how Abhi is married to his sword. Abhimanyu strongly disagrees. He just likes sword fighting, okay? That does not mean that he keeps his sword strapped to himself at all times, and beneath his pillow when he is sleeping. That was simply not true.
The marriage won't take place right away, of course. The arrangements for a marriage took time. Besides, his bride was the daughter of the King of a very rich kingdom. Of course the wedding would be grand.
Matsya is a beautiful kingdom, albeit different from Dvaraka. Dvaraka is Abhi's favorite place, his home. The scent of the sea is ingrained in his skin, and if someone asked him where he would like to spend his last days, then he would select Dvaraka. It was home, and no other place in the world could hold a candle to it in his eyes.
Matsya is slightly dryer in comparison to Dvaraka. The buildings are lavish and well constructed, cities are made in the form of forts. Here, in Matsya, they worship Vishnu, the preserver. Dvaraka has always worshipped Mahadeva more, but Abhimanyu cannot see the difference, honestly. He loved the set of royal temples in Virata Nagara, the capital. His bride would come to these temples each day without fail.
His bride-
Her name is Uttara, Abhi reminds himself. He has to address her by her name, not by some formal title.
If he were to be honest, then she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Uttara has long, wavy, dark hair. How does Abhi know? He saw her once, with her hair open, strands framing her face, curls cascading down the expanse of her back.
Uttara is someone who knows his father better than he does. And Abhimanyu's father adores her as well. Abhi can see why he does so.
She is a kind girl, and is always happy. Abhimanyu is rarely sulky, but he feels that in her presence he can be more optimistic. Krishna Mama says that they are a good pair. It made him feel very happy.
Abhimanyu doesn't want to freak out Uttara, or else he would have tried to be a bit more close to her than he is at the moment. It has been over a month since they got to know each other, and the wedding is still a long way ahead of them.
Many people have anxiously asked his opinions about his upcoming wedding. Abhimanyu finds himself to be very lucky, that he gets to spend his life with such a lovely person.
Sometimes he wonders whether he is good enough.
Whether he is a good son , and whether he will be a good husband.
Soon enough, reality crashes upon him on the bloody soil of Kurukshetra, as his life comes to an end.
The last thing he sees is the two of them on the beach of Dvaraka.
Him, and his wife who is more beautiful than the stars.

A Moment with the Mothers :
Aadya
I was blindly running through a dark landscape. The ground was rough and stones were piercing into my foot. I dared not stop running. Some shriveled black corpse-like hands were taking form and trying to pull me into the darkness. Their nails dug into my skin and left bleeding gashes. A putrid stench of death, decay and blood filled my nostrils. I was exhausted. My lungs seemed to burn. The place was infernally hot. But those creatures were painfully frigid.
I stumbled and fell. Panic seized my heart. The creatures caught up with me. Their presence brought back forgotten grief, fear and hatred. I felt anger, helplessness and every other negative thought that had ever crossed my mind.
A deafening humkaar reverberated through the terrain. It was terrifying. But it brought a strange sense of safety with it. I saw a few creatures crumble to dust around me. A pair of feet appeared in front of me. The skin was like the primordial darkness of the universe. It was stained with a blood-red alta and adorned with anklets made of exploding stars. I looked up and found Devi towering over the entire terrain. Her dark flowing locks formed the sky above. Her eyes burned with the power of a thousand suns. Her tongue was hanging out, dripping blood. She was naked. Time started and ended in the expanse of Her body. She was adorned with celestial bodies. A mundmaala hung around Her neck. A gleaming golden kharga in one of Her hands. A golden bowl in another hand, blood sloshing around inside it. She seemed to hold the entire cosmos in Her third eye. A strange mixture of fear and relief gripped my heart.
She jumped and landed among the creatures of the shadows. Her scimitar flashed like golden lightning. And bodies of those creatures piled up on the floor. She danced with a bloodthirsty frenzy, trampling over hundreds of those beings. I trembled with fear at the violent sight in front of me. Kaalratri danced the dance of destruction. She then turned towards me. Rage burning in Her eyes, She let out a blood-curling scream. She ran towards me. I was paralyzed with fear. A part of me was wildly flailing inside me...trying to run away. Another part pinned her down waiting for the Devi. She stopped in front of me and swung Her kharga. I closed my eyes. It went through my neck with an excruciating pain.
Tears rolled down my face as I opened my eyes. The pain had faded away quite a bit. I was shocked at what I saw. A shriveled decaying form of me laying dead at Her feet. I broke down in fear. All the ugliness that was within me lay in front of me now.
I started to drift into a sleep and the darkness around me seemed to dissolve away. When I woke up I was in the middle of a beautiful forest clearing. Large arching trees provided such cooling shade with their embrace. A little brook was trickling nearby. Birds were chirping all around. I was in the womb of Prakriti. The Devi appeared again. dressed in a soft white saree with a broad red border. Her skin was glowing like a blushing dawn. Her eyes held me with such tenderness. She smelled like chandan. She smiled and called me to Her. When I went near her She held my cheek and I started to heal. All the wounds started closing up. Every strained muscle seemed to relax. The exhaustion seeped away. I felt rejuvinated. Her hand had such a cooling touch...just like a cooling breeze against a burning feverish forehead.
She sat on a rock and I sat at Her feet with my head on Her lap. I cried my heart out to Her, long hidden grief, confusion, fear...along with feelings I have never been able to explain to myself. She held me close...humming some ancient melody to me. Not a word was spoken, but so much was conveyed.
Everything seemed to make sense suddenly....every turn that my life has taken, every person that I have met, every day I have lived through, every bit of gyaan I have acquired, every aspect of samsaar that I have learnt so far...all of them has to contribute towards slaying that demon within us, the ugliness within us. Every moment lived leads to slaying the darkness withing us and laying our existence at the feet of The Mother.
She embraced me and dissolved into me. I woke up with a start. My fever had gone down after two days. I was sweating, I felt like someone had breathed in a new life into me. The sunlight formed a strange pattern on my floor...a Trishula.

I am okay with fusion but please name it as fusion dance. It is NOT classical. There is a popular dance crew in our uni and they are really good, but then I saw one clip of a fusion of bollywood + classical which is semi classical and instead of naming it as semi classical or fusion, they name it as classical. Due to this people often get the wrong idea about what is the difference between classical dance and semi-classical/fusion dance
A bharatanatyam leap + kathak chakkar + bolly thumka is not equal to classical.

There’s a fic on fanfiction(.)net that I’ve kept tabs on for years to see if it’s been updated or not. While I’m no longer even in the fandom it’s written for, it just has one of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read. Last time it was updated was 2011.
The other day, I decided to reread the entire thing and leave a very in-depth review of what I thought of each chapter. I also mentioned how I started reading it when I was 13 and am now 21, but always came back to see if it was ever finished because I loved it so dearly.
Today, said author sent me a private message saying that her analytics showed that the story was still getting views even after all these years, but no one ever bothered to leave reviews other than “update soon!!!”, so she never felt motivated enough to finish it. She said that me reviewing every single chapter with lengthy paragraphs made her cry and meant the world to her. She also mentioned that she felt encouraged to write the two remaining chapters needed to complete the story and that she would send me a message the night before she updates the fic.
I’m literally sobbing. I’m so excited :’)
Please always remember to leave a review when reading fanfiction!!! It means a lot to a writer.

For every girl child through whom Devi is born, Devi grows within women before the child and cleanses the world bit by bit to make it a little more beautiful for the child. The fight has been relentless. May the fight go on till every force which tries to pull back society into darkness is vanquished.
A little concept art. Just the sketch so far. Hopefully will be able to develop it further. Maa Gauri cradles a child and shields her from darkness, while Maa Kaali stands fiercely protecting and fighting and simultaneously playing with the little one. The little one also playfully grabs a strand of The Great Goddess' hair.
