Devendra Banhart Concert Review
Devendra Banhart Concert Review
By Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp (DJ Owen Chillson)
“Where is he?” a friend asked me somewhat anxiously as we waited amongst a sea of people in front of a stage void of human life. The rest of the crowd was also getting a little rambunctious from waiting; it was only about 8:15, but the band was supposed to have started at 8:00. Fifteen more minutes of standing, nothing ridiculous, yet the room buzzed with impatient anticipation as we waited to witness beloved Venezuelan singer-songwriter (and perhaps indie’s answer to Michael Bublé, with his relaxing discography and the love he garners from the ladies) Devendra Banhart grace the stage of Santa Ana’s Observatory.
To soothe the crowd and prepare them for what was to come, members of Banhart’s backing band came on stage to play mini-sets, which drew attention to their individual talents. However, right after they set the calm mood, Banhart came on stage and the crowd filled the room with a fervor of screams and hollers of adoration. For being a musician who plays laid-back tunes with soft-spoken vocals for the most part, his mere presence summoned a great deal of energy from the audience.
Banhart’s performance was well worth the wait. He simultaneously exuded suavness and unabashed fun as he crooned songs like “Celebration” and “Middle Names”, or danced in a carefree, flouncy manor while performing “Fancy Man” as he embodied the song’s name. In short, his stage presence was captivating. Banhart acknowledged the dark times the U.S. has entered, with some crowd members shouting to denounce the new president, but the singer/guitarist encouraged joy and unity in the face of it all. He brought exactly that to everyone in The Observatory that night. When he performed “Fig in Leather”, he warmly summoned the crowd to come disco with him onstage for his encore. With about one-third of the audience dancing up there with him, he and his band ended the night with “Carmensita”, a fan favorite. The room was filled with love as he sang, beaming, swarmed by fans singing along, dancing, taking pictures, and even giving him kisses and hugs. I thought that finally seeing Devendra live would help me quell my great admiration of him, but it only made it worse.
This January 29th show was only one stop in Banhart’s extensive 2017 tour (with dates in not only the U.S. but also in Canada, Europe, and Japan) supporting his 2016 release and ninth album overall, Ape in Pink Marble.
