All writing problems are psychological problems. Blocks usually stem from the fear of being judged. If you imagine the world listening, you’ll never write a line. That’s why privacy is so important. You should write first drafts as if they will never be shown to anyone.

“Summer Love”, a review of sorts
Contributing to  duetbooks‘ anthology of nine stories in “Summer Love” is a privilege, not only as a writer, but as a reader too.
What I love the most about the entire book is the feeling of happiness that comes from it.
Some of the characters face a journey that is darker than the others’–I think of Jack, on the verge of World War Two in suzeysays‘s “The Willow Weeps For Us” and of Amy stilgenbauer’s Ruth, finding love in the 1950s in “The Fire-Eater’s Daughter”–but for that moment, that moment in the summertime, they are allowed that pocket of happiness, of carefree onlook at the world, and I for one welcome this brand of LGBTQIA literature.
There is not a story I didn’t like in the whole book, but two stories stood out particularly for me.
One is H.J. Coulter’s “My Best Friend”, written as a letter to the aforementioned best friend who is moving away.
The whole thing tells a story of love, of growing up, of finding oneself and renewing a friendship for years. Yes, the narrator is gay, but it’s not what this is about here. The love that is described is the one between the two friends, as important as any romantic relationship.
The other story is carolinehanlin‘s “Something Like Freedom”, the story of a young man forced to leave home but finding perhaps love, for sure hope on his way.
Besides the way Caroline uses words in a masterful way to pull us/me into the story, the emotions described just … echoed in me, in a way, even thouhg my journey has nothing in common with either of her protagonists.
As I closed the book, and maybe I should blame Netflix’s “Sense8″ on that part, like Rachel Davidson Leigh mentioned in her post on the launch of the book, but I quickly started picturing all of the characters interacting with mine and with each other.
It was not too far of a stretch to imagine that Ruth was Noam’s grandmother, or at least a relative.
That Jack had survived the war, against all odds, and grew to found Camp Sandy Hills, the summer camp “with a creative arts flair” where Logan and Dave find each other.
That Cody could befriend Gabe and Noam, because they have that same quiet energy, and that André would mesh well with Charlie and Eli.
That Noam could find a surrogate older brother in Carter.
That all the youngsters would enjoy joining Ava and Poppy’s bonfire, even if it was just to sit around it and look at the embers or dance widly around it.
Basically, that all those stories could be connected, even if they are not.

This is a very sweet story of a girl that is an artist. It is short and a nice story of budding romance. (…) Over all this is a very interesting collection of short stories. There is YA, NA,MM, FF, And transgender. There is a little bit of something for everyone. Each story is poignant and full of emotions. This is a great book to get a sample of several new or new to you authors.

Five Stars.
Inked Rainbow Reads, on Summer Love, now available from Duet.

“This is a wonderful collection of stories about first summertime romances.  The stories are about young adult characters, but they will resonate with anyone who has ever enjoyed or dreamed of a summer romance.  Bonfires, beaches and summer jobs form the backdrop to stories about first glances, first kisses and first touches.
Unlike many anthologies, the content here is cohesive and the writing is consistently excellent.  I was surprised by the stories I was most drawn to.   I loved Ella J. Ash’s story, Surface Tension,  about a summer camp romance.  Naomi Tajedler’s story, What the Heart Wants, about a young girl’s sexual awakening in art class, is a beautiful, emotionally honest piece.  I also loved Rachel Blackburn’s On the Shore, a sweetly exuberant story of a beach romance. I found The Most Handsome by SJ Martin, the story of a transexual boy’s first romance, to be compelling and beguiling.
This is such a great collection.  I think it will make young LGBTQ readers feel hopeful while it makes the rest of us nostalgic.  A wonderful summer read.”
