Proximity
Neteyam x Olangi! Reader
Warnings: angst, arranged marriage, reader's sheltered asf and is low-key very awkward and blunt as a result, reader's direhorse dies, Neteyam gets insulted within five seconds of meeting them, slowburn I think, neteyam getting misnamed repeatedly
(nobody ask me about the accuracy of anything)
Tumblr media
Neteyam was to be mated to you, the child of the olo’eyktan of the Olangi clan—the nomadic clan of the plains, direhorse riders.
To put it simply, he was nervous. His hands were gripping the edge of his loincloth so tightly he worried vaguely that it might tear. His mother kept sending him worried looks, and his father—Toruk Makto—had his hand on Neteyam’s shoulder, keeping him walking towards the Olangi camp like Neteyam would try to run away.
Since the Olangi were a nomadic people, his father had to plan everything out perfectly so that they would not come when the Olangi had already moved on. It had caused his father a lot of stress, Neteyam knew, but as they approached the camp, his father’s tight grip relaxed.
They'd taken their ikrans most of the way, but his father had made them the last little bit, saying the last time he'd sought out the Olangi his winged mount had startled their direhorses quite a bit, and he didn't intend to repeat the accident.
The camp was made up of simple cloth tents- animal skins, maybe, stretched over wooden poles whittled down to gleaming off-white.
The area was alive with children of all ages running around outside and playing, little squeals and shrieks snatched away by the warm evening breeze.
Cooking fires dotted the ground like red stars, adults and older children tending bubbling pots, haunches of meat skewered and turning slowly.
And, of course, direhorses tied up to the tents themselves, cropping grass peacefully, whickering to one another every so often.
It was nice. Calm. The grass, golden with summer dryness, rasped against Neteyam's calves as he walked. The air was heady with the smell of herbs and animals- not entirely unpleasant, he noted.
As they reached the outskirts of the camp, a small group approached them, the olo’eyktan at the head. He was tall, taller than Neteyam's father, with a bone piercing through his nose. The rest of the group was composed of a shorter woman with long, dangling bone earrings who Neteyam guessed was the tsahik; three near-identical young men, probably your brothers, all the same height as the olo’eyktan and therefore they towered over Neteyam, even from a distance; and a young person painted in rich, earthy colours, decorated with bone jewelry. The olo’eyktan’s youngest. You.
Neteyam’s future mate.
His father and the olo’eyktan both performed the usual greeting, and Neteyam was prodded forward to do the same. Tuk, Kiri, Lo’ak and their mother remain behind Neteyam and their father, but he can feel their support wholeheartedly, warm and constant.
At least, the support of Tuk and his mother. Kiri is less than pleased with the union, but then again, she is rarely pleased with anything. She says it's barbaric, the arrangement of a mating between two people who have never met.
Lo'ak just despises that Neteyam's new mate will take up his time, time that Lo'ak thinks should be spent on more entertaining things. Like disobeying their parents and whatnot.
You returned the gesture, and Neteyam realised with a little spark of sick fear that this was it. You would return home with him and his family, and you would be his mate. You would be together forever, in the eyes of Eywa.
He couldn't even begin to imagine how that would go. Your expression was blank, devoid of any emotion that could possibly clue him in to how you were feeling.
Your eyes, outlined boldly in red, flicked over him, and he felt oddly naked beneath them.
Then you made a face that was somehow both confused and disbelieving. “How do you climb with those legs, or even keep your balance with that tail?” you asked him, voice cutting through the serene silence.
One of your brothers muffled a snort, earning a sharp elbow from one of the other two.
“Parultsyìp!” the tsahik, your mother said, scandalised. Lo’ak stiffens beside Neteyam, and Neteyam knows his brother well enough to know that a rude retort is on the tip of Lo’ak’s tongue.
You wince at your mother's cry, ears flattening against your head in childish irritation.
Of course, you hadn't intended to be rude. Why would you? You weren't stupid, you knew you had to make this work or you would be miserable for the rest of your life.
But you had never seen Omaticaya before. You'd grown up on tales of Toruk Makto, of course, the sky demon with the skin of any average Omatikayan man, who'd come from a star and saved the Omaticaya- sort of, your older brother Kalzi had whispered to you afterwards, just giving you one of his annoying, knowing smiles when you had asked him what he meant.
You hadn't even been born when Toruk Makto came to your tribe, seeking their help.
But Toruk Makto was your childhood hero. Big and strong and smart and... Oh, everything in between.
You had imagined the Omaticaya to look something like you, of course. Strong limbs, hard with muscle from an early age. Though, of course, their muscle would be born from climbing trees and whatnot, rather than wrangling and spending days on the back of a direhorse.
Thick tails, for balance- though, again, theirs would be needed for balance when high up as opposed to when riding.
Not that you had spent much time thinking on the appearance of a tribe you had never seen in your life. It, stupid though it seemed now, had just been something you'd pondered once and accepted ever since.
Yes, now it seemed incredibly stupid, as you stood there staring at your future mate, whose name you didn't even know. Neteyam, you think your mother has told you.
And, of course, your mouth had gotten ahead of you and voiced your confusion and disbelief before you could stop yourself.
Your future mate (Neteyam?) stared back, expression carefully calm.
His little brother didn't seem so inclined, however, and was giving you a glare strong enough to burst your head like an overripe fruit.
"Apologise," your father said firmly, his hand coming down on the back of your neck. Hard.
"Oh, there's no need-" Toruk Makto began awkwardly, waving a hand in dismissal. "They didn't mean it badly."
Your father made you apologise anyway.
You weren't a kid anymore, but you sure as hell felt like one as you forced out the most sincere apology you could muster, still staring at Neteyam in disbelief, eyes roving over every inch of his abnormal body.
To his credit, Neteyam accepted your apology graciously, carefully avoiding meeting your eyes again.
"Well," your older brother Zütxu said cheerfully, clapping his hands. "This has been sufficiently awkward. Join us for dinner? It's the least we can do, since you've come all this way. My idea was to put them on their direhorse and send them on their way and be done with them, but-"
"Zütxu!" your mother said, clutching at her nonexistent pearls for a second time. "Must all my children make disgraces of themselves?! Great Mother."
"We'd love to join you for dinner," Toruk Makto cut in smoothly, ushering his family forward.
Lo’ak is still annoyed with your earlier insult. Neteyam can feel his younger brother bristling at his side, but he simply nudges Lo’ak. “You cannot blame them for being confused. They have never seen Omaticaya before,” he murmurs.
“You don't know that!” Lo’ak hissed in response. “They were being a jerk!”
“Ao’nung was the same way, remember?” Neteyam reminds his brother. “But he is a good friend now. They will not be like that always.”
“You have too much faith,” Lo’ak grumbled, before squinting up at his brother. “It’s because they're attractive, isn’t it?”
Neteyam just scoffs and smacks Lo’ak upside the head.
A few minutes later, they are seated around a bonfire with the rest of the Olangi clan, everyone eating and talking happily. Neteyam finds himself seated next to you, as he expected.
You are silent, the fire reflecting in your eyes, in your glistening body paint, in a way Neteyam cannot help but stare at.
Then your eyes flick to him, glancing over his face momentarily, before they drop back down to the food before you. "I am sorry, even if I don't seem it," you say after a moment. "It was stupid of me to make assumptions. And... even more stupid of me to act like you should've fulfilled expectations you weren't even aware of."
"It's fine," Neteyam shrugged. "I'm not upset or anything. I guess it's justified. I didn't know what you were going to look like either."
You nod. A few moments pass as you pick at your food before you speak again. "I thought you would look more like me." You take a minute to explain your theory to him, flushing as you do.
Neteyam laughs, the beads in his braids clicking against one another as he moves, his eyes glittering in the firelight also. He tilts his head, shifting a little closer to you. "May I?" he asked, reaching for your arm.
You nodded, holding it out for him to take, confusion written in your face.
Neteyam grips your arm gently, feeling the corded muscles within. "Omaticaya are not so bulky," he said carefully. He didn't want to upset you in some way. Of course, you'd already insulted him, but you'd apologised and he could see you hadn't meant it in such a harsh way. "In the forest, we have no need for it."
You nod, touching his own arm with your free hand, noting how you can wrap your hand around it entirely. "We ride before we can walk," you say, taking his hand and pressing his fingers into the top of your thigh so he can feel for himself. "Our leg muscles develop first. From riding and also hunting on foot. Then our arms, from handling direhorses and whatnot. Our core muscles too. Mama says we developed thicker bodies to accommodate the strength we need for our lifestyle."
Neteyam nods, feeling the hard muscle beneath your dusty blue skin, though he's careful not to let his curiosity cross any boundaries. He can feel his ears angling forwards to catch your words as you speak quietly, the rattle of the off-white beads in your own hair, his skin tingling with warmth as you wrap your hand around his arm.
He has hopes for this union after all.

Sweet dreams filled your sleepy mind away until it was stopped when you heard very panicked screaming. “GAH OH MY GOSH PUT IT OUT!” Lo’ak screamed outside of your closed bedroom door. You were quick to jump out of bed and swing the door open to head to the kitchen where all the noise was coming from. As much as you wanted to question how this all happened, you needed to defuse the situation.
Taking a big lid, you placed it over the pan to stop the fire within it. “Morning Y/N hehe?” Lo’ak greeted Neteyam and Ao’nung made two loud gulps. “Tell me how in the world you all nearly burned down my kitchen?” You asked as you turned around. Both your hands resting on your hips.
“We were just trying to make you breakfast.” Neteyam nervously twirled his thumbs as he looked down. Your eyes scanned your counter and sink to find it to be in a complete mess. With patience, you take a deep inhale and then exhale. “What were you guys even trying to make?”
“Pancakes.” Ao’nung said. Your brain was trying its best to understand how it takes an entire sink full of batter covered bowls to make a few pancakes. Your hands rub your temple to hope that you won’t get a headache. “Okay, all of you out. I’ll make us breakfast.” Neteyam wanted to refuse but the look you gave him said otherwise.
“Yes Ma’am!” Lo’ak spoke up scaredly. The three athletes wait in your small living room. Unlike their attempt, you easily whipped up a delicious meal. “Since all the pancake mix was used up, I decided to make us waffles.” As you placed each of their plates down in front of them, you returned to the kitchen. “You can add these if you want.” You put whip cream, ice cream, and some fruit in front of them.
You sat down at the table with them. “Stop staring and start eating.” You teased them as they added some whip cream, ice cream, and some fruit to their breakfast. Your ears heard nothing but loud “Mms!”
“These are so good!!” Lo’ak said with a mouthful. “Don’t do that, you’ll choke.” You warned as you took another bite out of your own plate. “These might be the best waffles I’ve eaten.” Ao’nung commented as he took another big bite. “Really? These are just everyday waffles people buy at the supermarket.”
“You sure? Because these are mouth watering!” Neteyam spoke as he took another bite. Watching all of them eat was quite interesting. Three big athletes exaggerating the taste of waffles.
After you all finished, they helped you clean up the mess they made. Then off you call went to walk to the college. You would soon understand why they were so happy to eat waffles for breakfast. They have a strict diet made by their couch to keep them in shape. Feeling a little pity for them, you offered to make them breakfast that will slightly stray away from their usual diets.
“Really? You would do that for us?” Lo’ak asked in disbelief. “Yeah, why not? I mean they are easy to make.” You responded as they all stopped dead in their tracks. Then you were attacked by their hugs. “THANK YOU!! MY GOSH YOU ARE OUR SAVIOR!!” They cried out. As much as you love being hugged by them, you couldn’t breathe.
“Sorry!” They apologized. Once class started, all they could think about was what they were going to have for breakfast tomorrow.

mom?
Spider x Neytiri (mother-son) a mother's day special
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
synopsis: after the Sullys return to the forest, Spider has constantly been struggling with the thoughts of Neytiri not hesitating to kill him in exchange for Kiri; serving as a reminder of just how replaceable he is. When mother's day comes up and the Sully kids all shower Neytiri in love, Spider is once again reminded that he'll never have a mom to care for him like he's always wanted.
extra info: Neteyam never got shot during the battle of awa'atlu and Spider didn't save Quaritch so the dialogue and plot in this is a bit different than atwow.
author's note: I just wanted to write this little fic for mother's day when it came in mind. Spider has basically been an orphan his whole life and although he hangs out with the sully kids, he's not officially part of the family, or of anyone's family. So I thought it'd be nice to write something good for him.
warnings: fluff but a little angst at first, some violence, small mentions of death/killing(no one dies), some mentions of self hate, angst to comfort
word count: ~ 3.5k -3.7k

"Release, or I cut" Neytiri threatened.
"What, you think I care about some kid? He's not mine. We're not even the same species." let out Quaritch, not wavering for his own biological son.
"Just plea- please don't hurt her. Just please, Let her go, PLEASE." managed Spider as Neytiri held a knife to his chest.
"Don't kill him." whispered Kiri.
"Listen to me, let her go. Don't hurt her" pleaded Spider.
"Mom, don't kill him." Quaritch's knife dug deeper into Kiri's skin.
"A child, for a child." Neytiri's grip on Spider tightened.
"Please, don't hurt her." he pleaded once more.
SLICE
"I cut." hissed out Neytiri as she cut through Spider's flesh.
"Spider! SPIDER!" Spider was ripped out of his thoughts as Kiri's voice waved through his ears.
"Sorry, I was thinking."
"Isn't it me who's usually supposed to be spaced out, lost in thoughts?" teased Kiri
"yea," He gave out a light chuckle.
"Are you fine, you've been acting strange ever since mom did you know what..." Kiri gave a questioning look.
"No, no it's fine. I'm fine. She was just trying to save you, she was mad at Quaritch so she acted out. It's understandable." reassured Spider, though inside, he felt unwanted by Neytiri and a burden to the Sullys.
He knew Neytiri didn't accept him as he wasn't a Na'vi and to make things worse, he's the son of Quaritch, leader of the group of sky people who tried to destroy Pandora, kill her family, and wipe out her people. How could Neytiri ever care for Spider as one of her own?
"Spider, it's okay to feel upset. I know I would." Kiri saw right through him, she wasn't stupid.
"Come, it's Mother's Day. The sky people usually gift their mothers gifts on this day to show their appreciation for her. You, out of all of us should know that," tugged Kiri as she tried to cheer up his spirits by involving him in family activities.
"Actually, I don't think Neytiri would want to have me around. If I gift her some flowers or food, she might throw them out, feed them to her ikran, or say a palulukan ran over them. Even worse, they might stink of alien blood." He lowered his head in shame as he played with his songcord.
"Spider! How could you say such a thing about yourself! She wouldn't do that! You are part of the family, she cares about you like she does about me!" exclaimed Kiri.
"That's the problem; I'm not part of the family. I don't have a mom or dad-"
"Neither do I, but Neytiri has become my mother. I love her just as much as I love Grace, and she does too." Kiri squatted down to Spider's height, and she placed her hand on his shoulder, trying to comfort him.
"You are Na'vi, I'm not. That's why she's accepted you as her own! She doesn't like me because I'm human." he barely let out in a whisper.
"No! Norm and Max are not hated by Neytiri, she even cared about Grace and Trudy as well. Don't you remember the stories of the clan, they even painted Trudy in Omaticaya war paint for battle! She doesn't hate humans!"
"But I'm not them! Were they related to Quaritch? NO. They weren't a burden, they could care for themselves, and they were Jake's friends. Jake and them chose their friendship, but me, I'm just one big accident. I should have never been born. Why did the scientists save me anyways, to burden everyone, and so I could never have a place to call home? Is that why?!" he threw his songcord on the floor in anger as he stood up. "She would never let me call her mom, and I wouldn't blame her." He stormed away, somewhere into the vast forest as to be left alone.
Kiri just stared as her mouth hung open in shock, not knowing how to react. She ran after him, trying to catch up, not knowing what she was going to say next.
When the coast was clear, Neytiri moved from behind the tree and approached the spot Kiri and Spider were previously at. A sigh left her lips as she picked up Spider’s disregarded songcord and held it close to her.
“Oh great mother, forgive me,” an almost silent prayer as she closed her eyes in realization of everything she just heard.
~~~~~
“Mom, mom! Happy Mother’s Day! I got this for you!” Tuktirey held up an assortment of tiny flowers she had picked for Neytiri.
“Oh, thank you, Tuk! I love them, they smell wonderful.” Neytiri smiled as she lifted them to her nose and breathed in their scent. She opened her arms, gaining a hug from Tuktirey, then patted her head and gave her a small forehead kiss.
“These will go with my bow.” she walked into her tent and was met with a surprise, Lo’ak, Netetam, Kiri and Jake all standing together. Kiri held a bouquet of even bigger flowers and Jake held a necklace matching two arm bands that Lo’ak and Neteyam each held, all containing a similarly woven pattern.
"Happy Mother's Day!" they all let out in unison.
"Oh my!" Neytiri beamed as her children and husband all gathered together to shower her in love and affection.
"These are for you." Kiri handed her the bouquet she picked out.
"And these as well." Jake presented as Lo'ak and Neteyam each handed her an armband.
"These are so beautiful! Oh, thank you-"
"Try them on mom!" squealed the youngest, excited to see the pretty accessories on her mother.
"Tuk, calm down." Jake warned but Neytiri just laughed at her excitement. She slid them on and turned her arms to look at them.
"So, how do they look?" She questioned.
"Beautiful!" exclaimed Tuktirey as she clapped her hands in excitement.
"I love them, thank you guys so much." Neytiri placed a small peck on everyone's forehead, including Jake's.
"Wait, we're not done yet." Jake opened the flap to their marui and they all walked out. He walked behind their shared tent and came back around with an ikran saddle in his hands.
"What is this?" Neytiri side eyed Jake, curious at the new object in his hands.
"It's an ikran saddle for you mom, your old one is all worn out, so we made you a new one." explained Lo'ak.
"For me?" she raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, for you!" Giggled Tuktirey as she now sat on Neteyam's shoulders to get a good view.
"I- I don't know what to say. These are beautiful. And they match my arm bands as well!"
"You don't have to say anything, happy mother's day! Thank you for being the most wonderful mother to our children." Jake placed a small kiss on her lips.
The sully's all gathered around Neytiri and embraced her in a warm hug, everyone was happy except for one watching, Spider.
He was hidden behind another clan member's tent and had seen how Neytiri had cherished all of her children. Once again realizing, that he didn't have a family and never will.
A small sigh left Spider's lips as he dropped the flowers he had picked for Neytiri and turned around, leaving for a quiet spot to ponder on his thoughts. Unbeknownst to him, Neytiri had spotted the flowers drop and him walking away. Her heart ached at the sight as she wished to call him, but shame and guilt got in the way.
"What is it? Is something wrong?" Jake saw the look on her face.
"No, nothing! Everything is fine. Thank you, my loves, I really appreciate your wonderful gifts. May Eywa bless you all" she forced a smile and gave each another small kiss and went on to saddle her ikran.
~~~~~
It was midday, and Spider had been sulking. He had faked his energy around the Sullys the whole day. His earlier talk with Kiri put him in a bad mood, and everything he witnessed further deepened the pang in his heart. Spider was filled with sadness, jealousy, and confusion, not knowing who, what, or where he was supposed to belong.
"Hey Spider, where's your songcord?" once again broken out of his thoughts but by Lo'ak this time.
"Oh um... I guess I lost it." Spider shrugged, not having much interest in it anymore since he didn't consider himself as one of the people.
"What do you mean you lost it, that has all of your life stories in it! What are you gonna do?" Lo'ak questioned, shocked at Spider's lack of care for his songcord.
"I don't know, man. I guess I'll go looking for it later on." he suggested in a dull voice.
"It'll be eclipse by the time you start searching." Lo'ak pointed to the sky.
"Meh, what's the biggie?" he sighed
"WHAT'S THE BIGGIE? What if you get eaten by a palulukan, or get attacked by some hungry nantangs (viperwolfs)? You'll be a GONER!" Lo'ak waved his arms in exclamation.
"Then I'll be doing everyone a favor." Spider muttered under his breath, not high enough for Lo'ak to hear.
"What?"
"Nothing, I'll be fine. Go have food with your mom, she probably made lunch by now." Spider got up and patted Lo'ak's shoulders in reassurance.
"Bro, aren't you at least gonna eat?"
"I'll be fine." he waived as he walked away to another section of the clan. Spider didn't have in mind to go looking for his songcord, but he knew it gave him a good excuse to wander off by himself. Not like any of the Omaticaya would care about his well-being, or so he thought.
Before he could make it too far from home tree, the sound of Neytiri's voice made him stop. "Spider!" He turned around.
Huh? Shit, I must have done something wrong to make Neytiri upset. Did I bump into Tuk by mistake, did I break one of her toys? What if I accidentally stepped on the bow Neytiri's father gave her?
His thoughts ran wild as he thought of all the possibilities of why Neytiri could possibly be upset with him.
"Spider!"
"Y- yes, on my way!" he huffed out and approached the tent, flap open as all the Sullys had just gone inside to eat. "You called?" he cautioned in nervously, getting ready for an earful.
"Eat, where are you going without your lunch? You will become weak and unable to catch up with the others if you keep this up. And you will become the next meal for a nantang if you plan to go into the forest like that.” Spoke Neytiri as she handed off some bowls of food.
"I, I'm sorry. I'll eat right away." he let out, not knowing what else to say, shocked as Neytiri had called him to eat, and not to scold him.
He sat down and ate, finishing his food as quickly as he could. “Thank you.” He let out and Neytiri simply nodded.
“Lo’ak, go clean the bowls by the river and take your brother with you. Neteyam, please collect some water, our vases are running dry and we’ll need some for later and for tomorrow morning.”
“Ooh can I go? Can I, can I, can I? Pleaseeee.” begged Tuk.
“Lo’ak, keep an eye on your sister.” Neytiri stacked the bowls and handed them to Lo’ak.
“But mom, she’s just a distraction!” pleaded Lo’ak.
“Silence! You will bring your sister with you. She needs to learn how to chores as well.”
“Ughh” Lo’ak let out a groan as he rolled his eyes and made his way out of the marui with Neteyam trailing behind him and Tuktirey already skipping her way along the path.
“Well, it’s time for my lessons with Mo’at. I’ll get going.” Kiri thanked Neytiri for the food and also left the tent, leaving just Jake, Neytiri and Spider inside.
“Don’t you have some business to attend to?” Neytiri questioned.
“Who, me?” Jake pointed to himself
“Well, who else has the duty of being Olo’eyktan? Some of the clan members were having a quarrel about something. You better go check.” Neytiri waved off Jake as he left the tent with a sigh, wishing he had more time to relax after his meal.
Spider stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.“I better get going.” He let out and was about to leave the tent until he was stopped by Neytiri.
“What is this I hear about you losing your songcord?” She questioned, not lifting her head as she cleaned up the marui.
“Err, I must have dropped it earlier today, but I think I have a good idea of where it’s at.” Spider scratched his head as he came up with what sorta felt like a lie. He remembered throwing his songcord to the floor in frustration as he spoke to Kiri earlier today.
“I suppose you are going into the forest to find it?” Neytiri looked at him.
“Yes, I guess so.” He motioned to turn around, but was once again stopped by the voice of Neytiri.
“Nonsense, it will be late by the time you reach deep enough into the forest to find your songcord. It would be dangerous for you to go alone. Get your bow and we will go find it.” Neytiri motioned with her hands for him to leave the tent and he did just that.
Spider was confused as to why Neytiri was helping him. This was the first time in his life that she ever offered her assistance to him, besides just sharing food with the Sullys.
Though, he wasn’t the only one confused, Jake had been listening from the other side of the tent and was now wondering what Neytiri was planning. Although he loves his wife and trusts her, this sort of behavior from Neytiri towards Spider was odd and maybe he doubted just a bit that she wouldn’t try to harm him. In fact, she probably would, especially with how she acted during the battle against Quaritch.
Is she gonna try to kill me? What if she abandons me or leaves me to my own defenses against a wild beast? No, come on, be rational. She wouldn’t try to kill me, or would she? She didn’t hesitate to try to kill me back then, what would change now? Shit, get yourself together, Spider.
Spider walked back to the Sullys’ Marui with his bow in hand. “I- I’m ready” he nervously breathed out.
“Good. Let’s go.” Neytiri led the way into the forest and Spider followed behind. The both striding quickly, unknowing of Jake closely trailing behind them, just to make sure that Spider would be fine. Or for extra protection in case an animal tried to attack them; the excuse Jake came up with, in case he got caught.
~~~~~
“I think this is the spot Kiri and I were at earlier” affirmed Spider as he searched for his songcord.
“I don’t see it anywhere.” Neytiri pretended to look around, though she was holding it the whole time.
“But I was right here! It couldn’t have disappeared unless someone took it, and who would have come here?!” He grew desperate as he knew the approximate spot he threw it at.
Neytiri quickly bent down and placed part of it under a rock as Spider faced the other direction, looking for it behind a bush. She stood up and pretended to continue looking. Spider approached her area and looked everywhere, lifting every twig, branch and leaf.
“I found it!” He yelled out in excitement, slightly feeling happier as Neytiri had treated him kindly.
“Good, and it’s still in one complete piece.”
“Yea” Spider smiled at the songcord in his hands
“But-“ Neytiri let out
“oh, but what?” Spider tilted his head in confusion
“It’s missing a piece.” Neytiri pointed to an empty spot on his songcord.
“Oh, it’s not missing anything. I just didn’t have anything to fill that spot yet.” reassured Spider.
“No, it is missing something.”
“I’m sorry, I’m not understanding.” Spider stated, now confused.
“I actually wanted to talk to you about something. That is why I called you to the forest out here with me.” She let out, eyes not meeting his as she grew worried with how she was going to deliver her explanation.
“But I thought you wanted to help me find my songcord? I found it!” Spider looked at Neytiri intently as she shied of any eye contact with him.
“Spider, sit.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and lightly pushed him down. She continued standing up, too nervous to stay still as she paced back and forth, tail swishing in anxiousness.
“I knew where your songcord was.” Neytiri admitted
“Huh, how?”
“I put it under the rock.” Neytiri let out as she looked down.
“Oh, you could have just told me that you found it. You didn’t have to do that to make me feel like I actually found it.” Spider smiled at what he thought was a kind gesture from Neytiri.
“That’s not what I meant.” She let out a sigh. “I saw when you threw it earlier today.” Neytiri’s ears bent down in embarrassment at the admittance of listening in on his conversation about her.
Spider’s face dropped as he realized she heard everything he said. Horrified, he stood up, trying to quickly think of an excuse to come up with.
“Don’t be nervous, sit back down.” reassured Neytiri as she pointed to the spot he was previously at. Not knowing what else to do or how to react, Spider sat down, uneasy for what was going to happen next.
“I’m sorry.” Let out Neytiri. Spider’s eyes widened in shock, unsure if he misheard her.
“What?” he asked in confusion.
“Oh great mother!” Neytiri briefly turned around as pleaded for help with her words.
“I’m sorry, Spider. I know it must have been so hard for you to have always been watching my family grow up and not feel part of it. To feel like you have no true home and no one to comfort you for that. I have been a horrible person to you,” managed Neytiri as she looked at Spider nervously, not knowing how he was going to react.
“I, I don’t know what to say…” It was the first time Spider had received such an apology, and the first time Neytiri had showed concern for how he was feeling.
“I know it is difficult not having any parents. I’ve lost my father and that has been very hard, but I was already grown up and had direction in life. I could even not begin to imagine the struggles you have faced while living without a mother or father to raise you as their own.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and continued on.
“We all know that Quaritch is your biological father, but that is no excuse for the way I have treated you. You are not him! And that day when we fought Quaritch and I had your life in exchange for Kiri’s, that… that was unacceptable of me! That was foolish...." she trailed in a low voice. "I had no excuse to take out my anger for Quaritch on you. NO EXCUSE!” She let out.
"If I had caused the death of an innocent child that day, I would never be able to continue to live with the guilt of such an act. And even though it did not go through, I still regret doing that, treating you as some sort of bargai-"
“No! You had to save Kiri, it’s okay, I understand!” Spider reassured her, but mostly himself, trying to come up with excuses in his mind. The words coming out of Neytiri’s mouth were too much for him to handle. Years of internal pain and anguish hidden from everyone until now. She was pouring out all of his inner thoughts and feelings so quickly and suddenly that he thought he was going to burst.
A lump formed in his throat as he tried to hold back tears and simply looked down, not being able to say anything else without the risk of a sob escaping from his lips.
“Please, let me start over with you.” Pleaded Neytiri as she looked up, struggling to prevent the tear that was forming in her eye from falling. “ I will care for you as I have cared for the rest of my children and Kiri. You have always meant only well to my family and have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment from me. Forgive me.” Neytiri looked into his eyes, waiting for a response.
A small sob escaped Spider’s lips, taken aback by Neytiri’s request for forgiveness.
“Come here, my son.” She motioned for him to approach her.
“Son?” Spider asked.
“Yes. Please, let me care for you as my own son. It's the least I could do to make up for my behavior towards you." Neytiri opened her arms as a single tear stained her cheeks, guilt overtaking her as she prayed that he would accept her plead.
"You want to be my mom?" his mouth hung open, brain barely making the connection at the sudden appeal.
"Yes, I want to be your mother. After years of suffering, it is what you deserve." Her tears now flowing down in numbers. "Please, forgive me. Give me another ch-" Neytiri was cut off.
"Mom!" Spider ran up to her and engulfed her in a hug, streams of tears ran down his face as he closed his eyes and wept.
Neytiri bent down to his height and embraced Spider as one of her own, thumb wiping his cheeks as she held onto him tightly, comforting him and herself in the process.
She held up Spider's hand that was holding his songcord, "Your songcord is missing a piece." she stated.
"I still don't understand what you mean by that." Spider let go of the hug to face Neytiri.
"You are one of us now, part of the family. You now have a mother."
Spider beamed in joy, now having someone to belong to and a mom who would take care of him.
Mom, a word with a new meaning: home, where he belongs.
"Son," Jake smiled behind the tree where he had intently been watching them both.
Hopefully it didn't come out cringey(it sounded a bit off and rough in my head while rereading it but I didn't know how else to fill up the details😬), this is my first fluff fic so bear with me🥴
any interaction is appreciated
do not steal my work and pls don't post it on ao3 or wattpad
Oh my gosh your requests are open! I’m so hyped. Can I maybe request like a Dad! Jake Sully x Daughter! Reader where reader is just so much like Tsu’tey, stubborn and always spites him but they still get along? I can picture Jake missing his na’vi brother and his daughter is just him all over again. I mostly think of Ghost by Justin Bieber to be Jake trying to relive the short time that him and Tsu’tey get along.
As soon as she was born, her yellow eyes seemed to pierce Jake Sully’s just as Tsu’tey’s used to.
 Born alongside Neteyam, [Name] bore the distinct features of the Na’vi. Kuru starting at the top of her head, prominent lack of eyebrow, three fingers. All features he should associate with his mate, Neytiri, the mother of the twins. But as Jake watches her grow, he can’t help but see his fallen Na’vi brother.
Jake thought it would fade away, that it was something from his past haunting him and his daughter didn’t actually look like the reincarnate of Tsu’tey at all. Besides, if he were to see Tsu’tey in anyone, surely it would be his remarkably Na’vi son, who bore many of the same traits of his sister. But as they grew, Jake and Neytiri both could see just how similar [Name] and Tsu’tey actually were.
It started early, when they were teaching Neteyam, Kiri, and [Name] to walk, a fairly simple and necessary step for any child. This didn’t stop little [Name], who was a little less than a year old, from being stubborn. Neytiri and Jake started by holding their arms, lifting them up onto their feet so that they could stand. When they could stand, they would let go, moving away slightly in hopes they would follow. The ‘they’ was just Kiri and Neteyam. When they tried to help [Name], she only swatted her hand away and pouted, giving the most hateful glare one could receive.
Regretfully, Jake laughed at this, earning a smack to the shoulder from Neytiri. How could he not have though? [Name] looked just like Tsu’tey like that, acted like him too. Jake smiled fondly at his oldest daughter, who soon after tried to stand on her own, feeling left out from her siblings.
Another time Jake saw Tsu’tey in [Name] was when he was teaching [Name] and Neteyam how to hunt. They weren’t very old, five or six max, and they still had a lot of learning to do. This, however, did not stop [Name] from trying to teach Neteyam how to use a bow, despite hardly knowing how to use one herself. It was day three of teaching the kids and [Name] was on Neteyam’s back about his posture. She kept hitting his belly, telling him that he had to tighten his muscles, hitting his arm, telling him to raise his elbow. While she was right, Jake couldn’t help but chuckle to himself, how many times did Tsu’tey mock and criticize his form? Too many to count.
By the time Jake came to the present, Neteyam had half-heartedly thrown his bow down, huffing in frustration before running up to Jake and hugging his leg.
“[Name] is making fun of me!” Neteyam’s weak voice whined.
“It’s not my fault you suck!” [Name] laughed, her small hands on her hips.
Ever since then, [Name] seemed to beat out Neteyam in every subject. In skill, she beat all of the young warriors her age. She was quickly becoming one of the best warriors of her age, of the clan! Jake was more than proud. Proud of not only his daughter’s success, but just how Na’vi she has become. Na’vi, just like the most Na’vi person he knew.
Tsu’tey.
No matter where she went, [Name] would always remind Jake of Tsu’tey. Remind him of when they got along. And when they didn’t.
Like the day after her Iknimaya.
Jake knew he shouldn’t be worried, she wouldn’t be alone, and yet he did not want her to go out riding ikran with her friends. Her friends where nice kids, all warriors like her, that he has taught, but she just bonded with her ikran, the bond was new, and he did not trust [Name]’s ikran just yet. He remembers Bob, it took a few days, at least a week for them to completely trust each other. He did not want [Name]’s ikran to get spooked by something and leave her for dead.
[Name] did not take this news very well.
She was just leaving their family home, a wide smile on her face, when Jake stopped her. He knew she was so excited to attempt her Iknimaya and was even more proud to have successfully bonded with her own ikran. That is why he was not surprised to see her smile fall, her ears pin back, and shoulders slump.
“What? Why?” she wasn’t unreasonable, if her father had a good reason, she would respect his commands.
“Baby girl, I have said you cannot go, do not argue with me,” unfortunately Jake was not great at communicating.
[Name] gave him a piercing glare, shooting daggers that seemed to wound Jake immediately. But he could not show it, would not show it. He is the Olo'eyktan, he must act like it.
But does not stop the pained look that washes over his face once she had walked away.
Later that night, Neytiri scolded him lightly for preventing [Name] from enjoying time kids her age for once, instead of taking care of her siblings or training. While Jake was still apprehensive about the situation, feeling as if his fears were justified, he felt his rules might have been too strict this time.
It was good timing for this resolution because not even an hour later, [Name] arrived back to the family hut, having been gone all night riding her ikran with her friends.
Jake stood up immediately, making his way to the entrance of their home, waiting for [Name]’s eyes to meet his. When they did, [Name] seemed to have more composure than him, he almost felt threatened by her eyes. As if he was the one to do something wrong, not her.
“Where have you been? I thought you were with your siblings?” Jake was more than confused, was she not just sleeping in her room with her siblings?
“Dad, we both knew where I was, no need to do this,” she did not seem angry, but she did stand her ground like the grown warrior she was becoming.
“Do not worry, Father. I have been watching the others,” Neteyam remarks, walking out of the Sully kid’s shared room.
He lays a hand on his father’s shoulder, “If anyone can go out alone on ikran and be fine, it is my sister. If anything, she was protecting the others, and you know they fight well.”
Jake smiles at his son, patting the hand on his shoulder. Jake nods, looking down as if thinking before looking back up at his daughter. He smiles at her, extending a hand, an invitation.
Her piercing gaze drops, her smile reaching her face again as she breaks out into a warm laugh, taking her father’s hand. Jake pulls his daughter and son closer, bringing them into his chest, where they rest their heads.
Later that night, all Jake can think about is how [Name] seemed just like Tsu’tey in that moment.
Tsu’tey patted Jake on the back, a harsh sort of pat, one you would give if you secretly wanted to do harm to the other.
“Jakesully, you do not understand our ways, you will never be one of us,” as much as his words sounded serious, with the smile on his face and the light tone in his voice told Jake that this was more affectionate than hostile.
Jake aimed his bow again, taking in a deep breath, eyes locking onto the makeshift target. He sucked in his stomach, raised his elbow and let go.
“Ah, pretty good,” Tsu’tey nodded, looking at the bulleye. “For a dreamwalker,” he teased, playfully smacking Jake’s shoulder.
Jake noted Tsu’tey’s smile was light, out of character for the Na’vi who usually wore a piercing glare around him. The smile was unusual but welcomed and only helped Jake prove to himself that he was, in face, becoming one of the people.
But what really sealed the deal for Jake, was when he assigned Lo’ak, Neteyam, and [Name] as look out for Lo’ak’s first mission.
He only let Lo’ak join because he had become awfully annoying with his pestering. Always on about how if [Name] and Neteyam could go, why couldn’t he? Jake figured that Lo’ak would lose interest or get too scared to do anymore if he let him join. How wrong he was.
Lo’ak was a pain in the ass as always, and Neteyam and [Name] were doing their best to keep him inline. The whole way to the checkpoint was full of non-stop chatter and jokes about how he was going to destroy the RDA, how he was going to beat them all up all on his own. [Name] though her eyes might get stuck with the amount her eyes would roll.
“Lo’ak, shut your damn mouth or I will tell mum what you keep in that basket in our room,” [Name] practically barks.
Lo’ak goes quiet, and [Name] can see the purple of his cheeks, even from where she is on her ikran. Neteyam smiles at her, and she takes that as a thanks.
The problem came when they arrived at the checkpoint, bombs went off, the train went off track, and Lo’ak decided he wanted a piece of the action, diving his ikran in the direction of the pa’li riders.
[Name] just held her hand up at Neteyam, telling him to keep on look out, and she dove to join her youngest brother.
When she landed, she found Lo’ak holding a gun, letting out a battle cry.
“Lo’ak!” [Name] came running, eyes dark and her ears pinned, straight for Lo’ak.
“Put that thing down,” she ordered, shoving the gun into someone else’s arms. “Today is not the day to be a skxawng, let’s go,” [Name] grabbed him by the ear and dragged him back to his ikran.
Jake watched this from where he was stationed, feeling a glimmer of pride for his daughter in his chest and a sparkle of deep annoyance for his son. But he was left little time to think before Neteyam warned him of an incoming RDA aircraft.
When they made it back to base, the three young warriors lined up, all three practically unscathed but their sisters still came and checked on them.
Jake looked into his eldest daughter’s eyes, he saw a warrior, a warrior that cared for her loved ones, one that did not take BS. He saw Tsu’tey. His na’vi brother. He looked into her eyes, yellow eyes filled with focus and determination, and he brought his hand from his forehead downwards in a smooth motion.
“I see you, daughter.”
Neteyam is many things; a kind spirit, a fierce warrior, a loving brother, a diligent son. But Neteyam is also new to love. Not quite new to being in love, but learning the act of loving you.
He’d found so many ways to express his heart’s desire; written notes on scraps, gentle smiles, searing eyes. It was one thing in particular, though, that made his mouth dry, made his brain nearly short circuit, and it was your need to be in his space.
Even after many days that bleed into weeks and meld into months, you make his cheeks warm with every lingering pass of your fingertips, make his stomach knot with every fluttering kiss to his skin.
It’d been a pleasant surprise at first, but now it was a need, an absolute necessity to have you fused to him like a second skin. Your touch was a tacit word and he was learning to speak your language.
The two of you together was normalcy and the clan members were more than delighted to know that the olo’eyktan’s son was lucky in love. But there were teasing whispers, lilting voices in the background that made something uncomfortable pinch the back of his brain.
His skin would light up with equal parts want and embarrassment when you’d hang loosely around him during evening meals and the villagers his age would giggle and murmur behind their palms about the two of you. Didn’t help that you were an oblivious thing, or maybe you didn’t care, when you’d hold his hand in your own, occasionally bringing his fingertips to your lips during casual conversation.
And he didn’t mind loving you endlessly when you were just two souls enjoying each other, but he can’t help but tense when his eyes wander and he sees watchful gazes.
“Mighty warrior is a needy one, huh?”
His friends, comrades since childhood, surround him on a sunny afternoon. Neteyam pauses his actions, arrow in the midst of a sharpening.
His spine goes rigid and his eyes narrow.
“What are you on about?” he asks, jaw locking.
“Even in the moments you aren’t with her, you’re thinking about her,” his friend Marin says with a shiteating grin.
“Don’t even,” Neteyam warns, eyes rolling as he continues with sharpening his arrows.
“Oh, come on,” another one of his friends guffaws, twining a new bow string. “You haven’t said a word since we sat down.”
And he wishes he could form a solid argument, but you are on his mind, all-consuming as always. Can’t help it when he’s pined after you for years and only recently found the courage to act on his heart.
“Maybe I just don’t want to engage with you assholes,” Neteyam bites, fist tightening around his dagger.
“Yeah, because if you open your mouth, all you’ll be able to talk about is my girl this and my girl that,” Marin teases. “Who knew future olo’eyktan was so clingy.”
“Yeah, like it’s me who’s clingy,” he grunts, resuming the task at hand with much more fervor.
“Is it not?” Marin challenges. “Oh, ________, my love, look at these flowers I picked for you.”
The blood is rushing to his ears as his friends howl with laughter.
“Syulang, I wrote you twelve pages declaring my love even though we’ve seen each other thrice since last eclipse.” The taunting makes him seethe, makes the feeling of discomfort surface all over again and the words are spilling before he can plug the dam.
“Of course it’s not me,” Neteyam scoffs. “I keep my composure, but it’s her that insists on constantly reminding the village that we’re together. If I had it my way, nothing would have changed from when we were friends.”
It’s a lie and he knows it, his friends know it. But you, you who staggers outside of the training circle at the sound of multiple voices don’t know it.
It’s like a swift strike to the gut, one that squashes every butterfly that tickled the lining of your stomach on your way to fetch the very man who’d held your heart and crushed it all the same.
Your satchel, heavy with fruits and snacks for after your evening swim with Neteyam, weighs heavy across your front as you debate whether or not you should be listening to a conversation that is obviously not meant for your ear. But it’s like you’re rooted to the soil beneath you.
“Yeah, okay,” Marin chuffs, obviously not convinced. “If you’re so bothered by your dynamic now, there isn’t any reason why you wouldn’t say anything. She’s your second skin and you love it.”
He does, he thinks to himself.
Of course he doesn’t, you realize, horrified, the thousand and one times your hands would find his body and he’d tense or shy away replaying like a horror reel in your brain.
“I potentially hold the future of this clan in my hands,” Neteyam says. “It is my duty to endure all things whether or not I enjoy it.”
It’s like you’re doused with water so cold at the violent shiver that shakes your spine.
Just another thing to endure, you mull over in your brain as the barge of emotions brims dangerously near the surface.
You break from the edge of the clearing and you’re off.
Tumblr media
Something is off.
And Neteyam is ashamed to admit that it takes him obnoxiously long to notice. Maybe it’s because he’s caught up in his duties, or maybe for once in his life, he isn’t worrying about meddlesome gazing, but the shift is imperceptible.
You’re still you, so aching beautiful and devastatingly radiant, but something is different. He doesn’t pinpoint it until he’s bidding you a farewell, leaning into your space to plant a kiss on your lips when you ease away to beam at him nervously instead.
His brows furrow when you wave, breaking away from him to scurry home.
He thinks it’s a one off, something he shouldn’t read too much into, but he can’t help it. Not when he’s so used to your touch, so used to feeling the pads of your fingers denting his skin and the scald of your lips.
He tries again a few nights later, after finally getting you alone. He’d been busy assisting his father in planning a raid at the end of the month and you were busy trying to put as much distance between the two of you.
“You’re awfully quiet, bug,” Neteyam observes softly, chin dipping under the water as he swims closer to where you float on the surface, eyes closed.
You only hum, pleading silently that he’ll let it pass. But when his fingers skim your navel, you’re jerking away from him, settling so that a berth of glittering blue separates the two of you.
He forces a laugh, wading closer to you as you seemingly shrink.
“What’s wrong?” he asks when he sees something like discomfort flitting over your expression, concern eclipsing his features as he reaches forward to grab you by your arm.
“Nothing…” you swallow, staring at the rounded stones beaded through the necklace you made him early on in your budding relationship.
He doesn’t buy it, tilting your chin up with deft fingers.
“Hey, hey,” he says softly, searching your face for a tell. “Talk to me.”
“Nothing,” you breathe, peeling away from him to wade back towards the embankment. “It’s nothing.”
He watches as you hoist yourself up from the river, heart in his throat.
Tumblr media
He cracks when the others seem to notice, slowly catching onto the fact that the usually doting and loving partner of the olo’eyktan’s son is surprisingly distant. It’s during an evening meal, villagers surrounding the multiple fires, when it comes to a head.
There’s an unusual space between your bodies as you chat with Kiri and a few others and he can’t help but close the gap as something akin to desperation washes over him. His fingers brush the span of your shoulders to pull you into his chest, lips a hairsbreadth from your temple before your palm snakes between your bodies and plants on his chest to nudge him away.
He bites the inside of his cheek in annoyance as Marin and his other friends share knowing glances.
While he boils silently, you ache to tell him that you don’t mean it, that there’s nothing more you’d want than to spend every waking moment in his arms, but that day in the clearing is a humiliating reminder that Neteyam is shackled to his honor and if it means making you happy despite his discomfort, he’d endure it all.
You hate it, hate that he’d let you feel like things were alright leading up to this moment, that he’d suffer at the expense of mocking and badgering from his friends. Makes you feel embarrassed, sorry, that you’d read the two of you all wrong.
You feel his fingers inching towards yours, pinkie overlapping with yours. Your hands involuntarily close into fists and that’s all it takes for Neteyam to shoot up from his perch on the log and take you by the elbow.
There’s a hush as his friends and yours watch the two of you part ways with the group, the nearly feral look in their leader’s son suggestively mistaken.
“Why won’t you touch me?” Neteyam asks fiercely, once enough distance lies between the two of you and the rest of the clan.
His words make your cheeks warm, but he looks troubled, hurt.
“I-”
“Did I do something to disgust you? Did I…”
His words melt into the background as you watch him with teary eyes.
“You don’t have to pretend with me, Teyam,” you whisper. “You can tell me the truth. I’m a big girl.”
“What are you talking about?” he asks, frustrated. “You’re the one hiding something. These past few weeks I’ve been trying to be with you, trying to love you and you keep pushing me away.”
A twinge of annoyance erupts in the pit of your belly as you frown.
“That’s rich coming from you,” you murmur hoarsely.
“I’m so lost right now, ________,” he admits desperately. “We were fine, everything was great, and suddenly I feel like I’m losing you. Did I do something? Are you–”
“Just be honest with me!” you cry out. “Why do you have to put on this front all the time? It’s just me, Neteyam! If I overwhelm you, if I embarrass you, just say it! It hurts worse when you act like it’s nothing.”
And Christ, his friends were right. He is needy. Because you’re not a want but a lifeline. A dire necessity that he feels the need to cling to in this moment. This feels a lot like you two are splintering, and he’s about to open his mouth to ask what would compel you to say such a thing, but then it clicks.
The final piece of the puzzle that he’d been agonizing over falls into place and his eyes are widening.
“No,” he says vehemently. “That wasn’t–”
“Is it not?” you cut him off as you dash the threatening tears away.
“God, no,” he breathes. “I was– They were…”
You watch him with wet lashes and his heart aches as he takes the leap and pulls you into his chest with a shuddering breath.
“I’m so stupid.” His chest rumbles as your ear presses to his heart, arms winding tightly around your figure to buoy you to place. “Fuck.”
You hiccup and his hand cradles your head, peppering kisses against your hair as he sways your bodies like it’ll disorient the miscommunication and send it spiraling away.
“I’m sorry,” you whimper. “I didn’t mean to be embarrassing. I–”
“No, no, bug,” he swallows, hugging you so tight, you struggle to suck a breath into your lungs. “You’re not, I promise. I could never be embarrassed by you.”
You shudder so hard his grip loosens, parting with you to cup your flushed cheeks in his hands.
“They were ripping me a new one,” he says shakily. “Told me I was needy, clingy, and I was embarrassed because they’re right.”
Your throat bobs and Neteyam’s thumb brushes over the apple of your cheeks.
“You make me so weak, you don’t even understand,” he laughs humorlessly, body wracked with nerves, with want, with need. “I said it to save face because I never know what to do with myself around you.”
“You—”
“And I know it was wrong, talking out of my ass to get them to shut the fuck up,” his language is a crass reminder that he’s a former marine’s son, “but I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being yours.”
Yours.
It’s a sound declaration, one that makes you crumple like a baby because you’ve missed your person, and Neteyam hugs you close again.
“I’m sorry I’m so clueless sometimes, bug,” he whispers, cheek nuzzling the top of your head. “Love you more than anything, I mean it.”
You hiccup again.
“Love you, too, stupid” you mumble, arms wrapping around the narrow of his waist.
It’s your first meaningful touch in weeks and Neteyam melts under the heat of your body, under the heat of your warm hands.
neteyam tries his best to keep his spirits high as he and his family settle into their new home. his efforts seem to not be in vain as he was brought to momentary peace by two somewhat familiar faces. though one of those faces seemed to have given so much more to him.
tags: slow-burn, neteyam x fem!metkayina!reader, fluff, angst in later chapters. slight!ao'nung x reader.
chapter i - The devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me. Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
chapter ii - I'm begging for you to take my hand, wreck my plans.
chapter iii - Time, mystical time. Cutting me open, then healing me fine.
chapter iv. - I'm a mirrorball, I'll show you every version of yourself tonight.
chapter v. - coming soon.
a/n: this story does not follow the exact flow of avatar the way of water, it is slightly altered for the sake of the love story lol.
JUST NETEYAM | neteyam x reader
pairing: olo'eyktan!neteyam x f!reader
summary: despite being from a different clan and expected to marry the leader of the omatikaya without knowing him, you agree to it for the sake of your family, but doubts start haunting you the moment you set foot in the clan, causing you to plan your escape on the day of your mating ceremony.
word count: 8k
warnings: arranged marriage trope, fluffffff, love-at-first-sight kinda thing, a bit of angst in the beginning, traditions, non-sexual nudity, prejudiced reader, royal neteyam, he is just such a prince it’s unreal!!
note: all characters are aged up by five years. the title eyktan/eykte (leader) being unofficially reserved for the olo'eyktan (clan leader)’s mate made sense to me since both are supposed to rule together. please correct me if i’m wrong. see end notes for more.
You will learn to love her. He remembered his mother’s voice, and he recalled the vast expanse of the sky, where billowing clouds danced gracefully and the wind embraced him with gentle caresses. The sky, like an endless canvas, painted in hues of blue, purple, and gold, held a beauty that stirred his soul.
Instead of roaring waves crashing against the cliffs, he witnessed the majestic flight of ikrans, soaring high above the jagged peaks. Their wings, strong and mighty, carried him through the heavens, as if he were a part of their elegant dance. Gone were the humpbacked sea surfaces, replaced by the boundless freedom of the open sky. The white foam, once adorning the ocean’s crown, now transformed into fluffy clouds, resembling intricately woven blankets. It was as if the heavens themselves provided a soft embrace, offering comfort and warmth.
Tumblr media
you often think back to the day that your daughter kai'la was born. how her cries of life echoed through the night air and how her hand instantly wrapped itself around your finger. you will never forget the look of pure love that shone in tsu'teys eyes as he looked into her own for the first time; silently promising to protect her with his life.
you and neytiri had been pregnant at the same time and she had given birth to her first son neteyam just days prior to you.
Tumblr media
'you can do it!' you encouraged your daughter who was unstably standing in place, attempting to take her first steps.
'come on, baby girl.' tsu'tey whispered; holding his hands out to catch her if she fell. neytiri and jake watched with smiles on their faces as neteyam sat in his mothers lap. kai'la looked towards tsu'teys open arms as she slowly placed one foot forward, the next foot intuitively following.
before you all knew it, she was in tsu'teys arms; finally having taken her first steps. tsu'tey scooped her up and held her close before wrapping an arm around you. 'she did it. she did it!' he beamed as tears filled your eyes.
'oh, my amazing girl! i cannot believe it!' you cooed, your tone full of excitement and pride.
'oh my god.' you heard jake call out, causing both you and tsu'tey to whip your heads around. your eyes widened as you watched neteyam, who was slowly walking towards your daughter before falling down by her side. you both stared at him in silence; jake and neytiri sharing your shock.
'has... has he ever done that before?' you asked neytiri, who shook her head; her mouth open wide in surprise.
'no...' she trailed off before her bewilderment turned to pure happiness and she reached over to scoop her son up in her arms. 'my sweet boy!' she cried as tears of happiness pooled in jakes eyes.
Tumblr media
neteyam and kai'la had been in sync ever since they had taken their first steps together and their closeness only began to grow as they did. they spent most of their waking hours together; learning how to shoot, how to track animals and creating childhood memories together.
'where is kai'la?' tsu'tey questioned as he made his way into your shared pod after his day of training. you were sat on the ground weaving an outfit for your daughters upcoming fifteenth birthday.
'she is with neteyam.' you smiled up at your mate, but his face scrunched slightly.
'again?' he questioned with a noticeable exasperation in his voice. you placed your tools down before sitting back on your elbows.
'yes... is that okay with you?' you stifled a laugh. tsu'tey shrugged, falsely acting as though he did not care.
'they are spending a lot of time together. that is all.' he attempted to shrug it off, plucking a piece of fruit from the bowl on your table before taking a seat next to you. he tugged at the fabric that was bunched on the ground. 'i cannot believe she is going to be fifteen... our baby is growing up.' he whispered, his voice laced with sadness. you took his hand in yours, rubbing your thumb over his palm.
'she will always be our little girl.' you reassured him as he sent you a sad smile.
Tumblr media
you sat with tsu'tey, jake and neytiri during neteyams nineteenth birthday celebration, watching your daughter and neteyam dance together. tsu'tey eyes were narrowed in on them, much to your amusement. kai'la and neteyam had become inseparable; as though eywa had written it as so. jake bumped tsu'teys shoulder with his own.
'y'know, they've been attached at the hip lately.' jake provoked, earning a hiss from tsu'tey. you and neytiri shared a knowing look as neytiri rose to her feet.
'come, ma jake. let us get some drinks.' she smiled, holding out her hand. she led jake away, leaving you and tsu'tey alone.
'neteyam is a nice boy.' you began as his ears flattened, eyes still fixated on the two.
'i know that.' he confessed with a sigh. 'i want the best for kai'la. that is all i am concerned with.' you took his hand in yours, following his gaze.
'she is happy. that is what matters.' tsu'tey intertwined his fingers with yours. 'and he seems to be the only man brave enough to interact with her... everyone else is terrified of her father.' you teased, earning a chuckle from your mate.
'i did my job... i kept her safe. maybe it is finally time to let go.' he whispered with a heavy heart.
Tumblr media
tsu'tey gathered his items the next morning; preparing for a full day of training. his attention was caught by a knock on the wooden beam at the entrance of your shared pod. he turned and was met with the nervous figure of neteyam.
'good morning, sir.' he bowed his head towards tsu'tey in a sign of respect, before raising his head and looking around the pod. 'i am sorry to disturb you. i was wondering if kai'la was home, though it looks as though she is not.' tsu'teys eyes fell upon a box in the young mans hand, causing him to grimace.
'i believe she had plans with your sister today.' tsu'tey informed, his eyes still fixated on the box. neteyam noticed this, clearing his throat.
'i... i made her a gift.' he confessed, shaking the box slightly as tsu'teys heart dropped.
he had made her a gift; he was attempting to court her.
'i see.' tsu'tey breathed, his feelings unclear to his friends son. neteyam placed the box on a nearby table before he began to nervously play with his fingers.
'sir... i must tell you that i have only good intentions when it comes to your daughter, i assure you.' he promised.
'i know that. you are a good kid.' tsu'tey confessed, sending him a soft smile. 'but she is my daughter. it is my duty to protect her.'
'of course... i understand. completely.' his ears flattened against his skull; thinking that this was tsu'teys way of telling him not to peruse kai'la. tsy'tey walked over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder.
'look after her, son. i am entrusting you with her happiness.' he whispered as neteyams ears perked up; a smile tugging at his lips.
'i will, sir. i would do anything for her.' he swore, reassuring tsu'tey.
'that is something we have in common.'
