This article was sent to me and our group by Lav @sweetestviscount and it pretty much hits the nail on why POC fans - especially Black and Brown fans - of the show who came for the diversity and the respective seasons that repped their communities are so disappointed with the way these characters have been treated. I urge everyone to go read the whole article in full! It’s well-structured, very comprehensive with his sources cited and linked, drops a lot of great truth bombs in the most subtle yet blunt manner that had me gasping so many times because HE IS RIGHT!

I can't get Quiet Unassuming Girl Claiming A Powerful Dragon out of my head!!
A monstrosity from the ruins of Old Valyria shifts from its eternal slumber when it senses Rhaena arriving in Driftmark with her sister, her father, and the charred remains of her dearly departed mother, Laena Velaryon. The three-headed abomination sinks into the sea and swims to Driftmark, where it eventually meets with its bonded rider. All three heads rise from the waters, and while the guards rush to restore order and the servants scream, tiny Rhaena merely walks up to the winged hydra and pats all three of its snouts before promptly climbing on its back and flying high into the night sky.
Rhaena names her mount, Triserys, in honor of all three of its mighty heads.
Rhaena wakes at dawn every morning to scramble onto their back for a morning flight. Because Triserys is too big to remain in Dragonstone's pit, they sink into the sea, where they find comfortable refuge within an underwater cave. So, as soon as Rhaena opens her eyes, Triserys senses her awaken through their bond and emerges from the sea. It never gets old.
Like their rider, Triserys has a calm temperament and is not easily provoked. However, that does not mean they're friendly. On the contrary, they prefer their own company over the company of the other dragons. Triserys' only friends are Rhaena, Arrax, and Moondancer.
Unlike the rest of her kin, who take pleasure in intimidating the common folk with their dragons, Rhaena prefers to travel with Triserys. Much to the exasperation and annoyance of her family, she will often take flight without a word of warning to explore undiscovered lands and even went so far as to travel to Old Valyria, returning after three days with treasure, tomes, and scrolls.
If she's not traveling, Rhaena can often be found with a curled Triserys, hidden under their wing, reading or practicing archery under their protective eyes.
From the moment Rhaena claimed Triserys, she became the most powerful and eligible Lady in Westeros, with hundreds of men vying for her hand while COMPLETELY disregarding the rumors that she is betrothed to Lucerys Velaryon.
Triserys LOATHES her many admirers to the point where Rhaena once jested that she has three protective fathers. "My Lord fathers do not care for flowery words or gifts. But, if you can look into their eyes without trembling, I will accept your proposal." So far, no man has managed to look into Triserys' eyes without fainting.
Triserys' flame is deadly with the combined force of all three of their heads. However, Rhaena only unleashes their flames if it is absolutely necessary, much to the chagrin of Daemon. She firmly believes that great power comes with great responsibility.
Otto Hightower came up with a plan to have Aemond seduce Rhaena and pressure Viserys into marrying the two of them. With this plan, The Greens would have Daemon Targaryen's weak-willed daughter and her dragon under their thumb.
Spoiler Alert: It doesn't work because Rhaena's constantly flying from place to place, traveling like her father before her, forcing Aemond to follow after her only to find himself accidentally tagging along and having fun for the first time in...ever?
The three heads will often commune silently with each other before eventually coming to a decision. For your sake, you better hope that decision doesn't involve getting burned or swallowed whole.
Their roars are so loud that they can generate a deadly sonic blast.
Triserys' preferred meal is seafood. They will swim underwater, gorging themselves on schools of fish or a whale. One time, they hacked up bits of a whale carcass.
Triserys is so big and powerful that Daemon and Rhaenyra had to painstakingly create a unique sect of Dragonkeepers who could handle them and would be loyal to Rhaena.

i have many and many beefs with hotd but my main one is the writing of ALL their black characters. literally nothing but scapegoats for all of the white characters. no agency or nuance to any of them. and what pisses me off the most is the characterizations (or lack of) for baela and rhaena who have a big part in the dance and after the dance.
there are people who have way more intellectual thoughts on this but it’s just genuinely annoying and it’s even more annoying when it carries over into fics which is why i don’t really read any hotd ‘canon’ fics anymore (amongst other reasons). there are only a few that i can tolerate reading.

Laena, Daemon, Baela, and Rhaena scene rewrite ideas
I started typing and I just couldn’t stop. Laena should have been such a great character.
The writers also easily could have written a better love story, relationship with her children, and characterized Laena by just changing the dialogue and actresses of the scenes Laena is already in. These changes can also remove a lot of the Misogynoir present in the story by not making Laena a place holder for a white woman, not making her death set up for a white woman’s death, removing the ‘fast black girl’ trope, giving her a truly loving marriage, and not turning her funeral into a joke. Disclaimer, despite my profile suggesting otherwise, I am not a cat but a white woman writing. Let me know if anything is falling into a bad trope for black women and I’ll rewrite it to be better!
First things first, I would age Laena up so she’s actually her cannon age when she marries Daemon. Savannah Steyn will be the first actress we see playing Laena. Visually and in text Laena is about 4 years older than Rhaenyra and Daemon. Savannah will play Laena from when she’s age 16 to age 20/21. Then Nanna Blondell will play Laena when she’s 30/31.
Pre time skip: Savannah Steyn
The first scene Laena is in is the joust, instead of having her just sit back and watch, Daemon should ask for her favor instead of Alicent’s. Laena can have a playful line like, “fight well cousin, your armor is too pretty to see dented.” Instead of low cut dresses for Laena’s signature style, she should have ornately beaded and embroidered dresses to show of her style and family’s wealth. For the joust she has on a pretty blue dress with embroidered sea horses (the animal not the hybrid). After giving her favor to Daemon, Laena can join Rhaenyra and Alicent with the gossiping, she can ask who they think will win. Alicent can mention she hopes her brother will win his first tourney and Rhaenyra can say she knows Daemon will win.
For the Viserys and Laena scene, Viserys can ask how Vhagar is doing and Laena can say she plans to travel with Vhagar around the world. We don’t have the awkward bedding talk, just a stif conversation between two people not remotely interested in eachother. This can also add to the creepiness of Viserys choosing Alicent as she’s younger than Laena.
Next we see Laena is when Viserys is proposing marriage between Rhaenyra and Laenor. Laena can wear a layered blue dress over a silvery blouse like the one she wears in the show but much more luxurious and less sexualizing. Laena then takes Rhaenyra away and can talk about her brother, saying he likes handsome people, implying that Laena is helping make sure Rhaenyra knows Laenor is gay and is okay with it.
At the wedding reception, instead of a low cut gold dress that doesn’t fit the style of the show, Laena wears a gown similar to the gown Rhaenys wears but with a golf and blue color scheme. Daemon should be the one to approach Laena, commenting on how beautiful she looks. Laena can play coy, saying that she is bethrothed to the sea lord of Braavos’ son and Daemon saying that she deserves a real knight and princes, not some Bravossi nobleman. Daemon persuading Laena because he wants her.
Post time skip: Nanna Blondell
Instead of Daemon keeping Laena in Pentos, have them be exploring the free cities with their kids and planning to have the baby on driftmark! The Pentosie noble man can offer for them to stay and daemon and Laena as a united front say they are travelers and don’t plan on staying in one place for too long. They can talk about visiting Old Valyria! Daring and adventurous!
Laena can talk to Rhaena about claiming Vermithor or silver wing, bringing up how she claimed Vhagar. Sneaking away from her father and seeking out the biggest dragon alive. Telling Rhaena she can do the same and that dragons love courage.
The baby can be premature and Daemon should be by her side during the labor, comforting her and supporting her. Daemon should also not accept the doctor saying Laena will die, he should shout at him to find someone who can save his wife.
Laena’s death should have been with daemon and her girls bringing her to Vhagar, not to burn, but to be with the member of her family. Daemon should weep when she dies in his arms! Pulling Baela and Rhaena close to comfort them. And Vhagar letting out a mournful cry for Laena.
And at the funeral, Daemon should not laugh at Vaemond’s eulogy, he should do a couch to be like “really? At my wife’s funeral?” Then have a moment with Corlys and Rhaenys where he apologizes for not staying on driftmark for Laena’s pregnancy.
Also, hooking up with Rhaenyra should be a low point for both of them. Both have lost the person they loved and started their family with. They would say they loved Laena and Harwin and miss them deeply. Toxic coping but atleast they are hurt by the death of their lovers!
And we get more range of emotion instead of just “oh no, wifey’s dead. Better marry my niece!”
This should have been where we see the “good” in Daemon, his love for his daughters and Laena.
Little aside for more characterization for the dragon twins:
For Rhaena, Daemon singing to Vermithor could have been him with Rhaena trying to approach the dragon, he can say “don’t be scared” to Rhaena but she gets to nervous to approach Vermithor. Daemon can give her a hug and tell her she’ll have a dragon soon.
For Baela, when they arrive at kings landing to present Luke’s claim, Daemon should give Baela a hug and tell her he missed her, Baela can counter with “you visited driftmark last week dad!” And Dameon can give a sad smile being like “can’t a father miss his daughter?” Showing his love for his kids and also paralleling Visery’s love for Rhaenyra.
I’m just spitballing here but I came up with a better story for Laena, Daemon, Baela, and Rhaena that shows their connection as a family, the grief of loosing Laena, and keeps Daemon from looking like a dead beat!
In short: let Matt Smith and Nanna Blondell kiss and act their hearts out to eachother!!!

LADY LAENA DISCUSSION: stop this.
I can't with the discourse that Laena was a coward for being killed by Vhagar instead of subjecting herself to hours of brutality that could cost both her and her child their lives with very little that anyone could do.
Because I saw a girl who was a pawn to her parents to establish power, making her own way to marry a man who didn't love her the way he should.
I saw her grieving to go back home while he couldn't give her the one thing she asked for. Someone begging to return at her brother's side but couldn't because her husband prioritized himself in their relationship rather than her, them, or their kids.
Someone who reckoned with the fact that she'd be second choice to the man she'd spend the rest of her life seeing him prioritize one kid over the other because he was buying into misguided bullshit about dragon riding, and refusing to rectify it by going back and be an adult for their kids sake.
Someone who was grieved by her family even though she'd been away for years, and even then, she and the people she wanted to return for weren't the priority of the man she'd spent her life with.
I call it self importance, selfishness, centering herself and what she wanted but a coward?
Allowing the thing she'd loved since she was a child take her life, do the thing she wanted. Especially since she could barely walk, far less climb Vhagar. Commanding her to do the one thing no one could take away or put a stop to outside of her want. Doing the thing Daemon had done the entire episode when it came to their family.
This time, it was a dying woman with the last thing she wanted was to do something no one could take away from her. No compromises, no regret afterward, just a quick death that she commanded.
Y'all will never turn me away from her, she's my Princess Diana. The people's princess when she had less than half an hour with me and was never formally a princess, yet I grieved for her through the character depletion.
Let's be serious.
A lifetime of serving. Lady Laena will always be famous. (With a side profile worth the centuries of inbreeding.)

truthfully, edwina doesn't know when her feelings toward her... prior engagement turned into a wave of scalding hot anger. it felt like one day she was fine; she could laugh and smile easily.
even if no one noticed how her eyes lacked their usual shine.
she was accepting invitations to the brigerton house.
even if it makes her skin crawl to be near anthony once more.
she was attending balls and dancing with potential suitors once more.
even if she knew those same men whispered behind her back.
edwina brushed off the first embers of resentment that began to form in her. she was a rational thinker who had read extensively on the mind and man. unsurprisingly, her situation with lord bridgerton is causing her current negative feelings.
knowing it was kate that held his affection did not make the situation better.
however, as the new season progressed, edwina became less inclined to accept her sister's request for a visit. she felt more obligated to burn the parchment with each invitation. why must kate insist on forcing this blending of families? was it not kate who let the farce between anthony and edwina go on? was it not anthony who purposely pursued her, knowing he wanted her fucking sister?
(once, after everything was...better, kate admitted to sleeping with him before edwina's wedding ceremony. edwina didn't know whether to strangle her, laugh, or cry. god, what a fucking idiot she was.)
after a few narrow yet successful attempts at avoiding the bridgerton house, amma finally talks with her.
('ed, would you care to tell me what is wrong, my love?' 'nothing, amma. i am fine.' cue a fake smile. her mother does not falter.
'why have you not been visiting your sister as of late? she thinks you are terribly upset with her.' fake smile falters.
'i have been busy, amma, with suitors.' they both stare at each other.
they both know that edwina is a ruined girl.)
amma does not bring up the topic again and must have told kate as the contents of her invitations include discussing future prospects. edwina scoffs. as if kate's antics last season did not ruin her so-called prospects. no man wants a woman with a bloodhound for a sister, and no man especially wants a woman who runs from the altar.
god, she was truly fucked, wasn't she?
as the days continued and her discontent grew, edwina could finally root out the cause of her horrible disposition.
betrayal.
every single goddamn person around her betrayed her. everyone around her knew about kate and anthony's affection for one another. they saw her play the love-blind fool and said nothing.
not her mother.
not lady danbury.
not even her fucking sister.
hell, none of the bridgerton siblings could muster up the courage to tell what she was too dumb to see. with how rambunctious they are, she's surprised none of them blurted it out during that blasted game of pallmall.
she sees it later, however.
how everyone subtly looks at her when anthony shares a kiss with kate.
how eloise tries to engage in discussion with her about their latest reads.
how daphne always has a sad smile for edwina every time they see each other.
how anthony doesn't even look at her when making the announcement about kate's pregnancy.
how her mother gives her a look of pity at each rejected invitation to the bridgerton house.
it's such a shame that edwina did not know whether to scream, cry, or break something once her emotions hit her at total capacity. she is lucky for the presence of the moon, as she can scream into her pillow all night.
