I think part of the fundamental misunderstanding of Nancy's character is that people see the hatred, the rage, the fire in her eyes when she takes down monsters and they believe revenge to be her main motivator.
It's not.
That revenge course you see her on is only a byproduct of her true motivation: love. Steve was right when he says in season 1 that "Nancy actually cares about other people". She is fighting this fight not because she wants to, or because holding a gun makes her feel strong, but because there are good people -- including all of her loved ones -- who can and will suffer if she doesn't. Like Barb.
Nancy is angry at the horrors not only for what they've already done, but also because of what they are capable of. They are capable of hurting innocent people, and Nancy can't let that happen. She must protect them. She channels that inner rage because it helps her keep going.
