I am starting this blog to represent the nonprofit that I am creating for feral cats, but also for wildlife. I went to school for zoology, and I love all animals. In 2015, I happened to move into a community where there were more than 70 feral cats. I began to spay and neuter them, and then I returned them to their colony, feeding them twice a day. I found homes for the friendly cats, and named all of them!
In November of 2016, people started trapping the cats, and were supposedly dumping them in the middle of nowhere. Although that was never confirmed, the cats did not show up at the local animal shelters or Animal Control. I rescued as many of them as I could, and moved us all to a house in the country.
In 2019, I acquired property, and made plans to turn the property into a feral cat sanctuary. The cats stay inside the sanctuary walls, the wildlife stays outside, and neighbors and cats and frogs and birds can all be happy living in close proximity to each other.
It has been slow-going, with building a fence, purchasing a large building for shelter, making sure the yard is an interesting and fun place for kitties to hang out, applying for the proper licenses and permits....it will be another year before we are up and running, and we already wish to acquire more property! People are calling for help with stray cats, but at this time, we are already filled to the brim.
We will be growing catnip and produce organically come spring, and selling at local farmer's markets next summer to support the cats, and we hope to eventually sell the catnip online also.
We have filed our Articles of Incorporation and have our EIN's, but we are still looking for some additional members to join our Board of Directors. I will be blogging about our adventures starting the nonprofit, our challenges building the for-profit farm, and posting many awesome stories about the cats. I will also present animal behavior, wildlife, and other animal- and plant-related stories and topics. I hope you follow me to support our Awesome Sanctuary Cats!
