do chatots actually know what they're saying when they're mimicking? every time my landlord walks by my home my chatot flies out of the window and starts circling him and calling him a "fucking bitch-ass leech motherassfucker" and 30 other different colourful insults while running him out of the street and i fear that if he gets to know it's my chatot he might evict me for indirectly calling him names

They do not. They mimic what they hear, often in the context they hear it in. This Chatot has associated those sounds with the sight of that person, but has no understanding of the meaning, no more than any other words it has heard.

Pokemon cannot use human language.

I now stand at a crossroads, unsure of my future.

I thought, at the start, after everything ended in Johto, I would simply return to Unova, go back to my veterinary practice, and life would resume exactly as I left it. There would be no change. And that is still an option for me.

However, in my time here, my expertise and assistance was such that I have been offered a full scholarship to become a full-fledged Professor here, if I so desire it. I could take it, study, and become an outright professor of Pokemon biology and veterinary care.

I have also been offered a position as laboratory assistant to Bill himself, in caring for what Pokemon his studies need next. This would offer the chance to revolutionize Pokemon care time and time again...

... or I could do none of these. I could follow Professor Coconut. I could open up a new veterinary practice here. I could do so many things...

It was comforting, before, when my future seemed so assured and unchanging. Now, I have no idea what to do, and it terrifies me, even though every outcome is good.

honestly, i barely have control over my pokémon in a battling context for the most part. not for a lack of trying or training. back when i was still challenging gyms, aurora barely followed anything i said. i know it's not out of frustration or rebellion - she deeply cares for me - but at the same time, she thinks me as... not weak, but incapable. yet it somehow always works out - she's as fast as a shooting star and her psychic attacks hit just as hard as one.

it's definitely not a show of individuality that i'm proud of, but it's... something?

To the Trainers and battlers who read this, I am curious.

What tactics and strategies do you use that differentiate yourself from any other? Or are you a strictly orthodox Trainer?

There are many kinds of Trainers who use differing strategies. Some become more involved in the battle themselves- Considering things like releasing their Pokeball in specific places on the field, or timing their attacks. There are some who simply leave it all up to their Pokemon, viewing themselves as a coach more than an active part of the battle. Some will even modify their Pokeballs within League regulations so that they fly further. Pokemon battling is a display of bond between Trainer and Pokemon, which means many do see the Trainer as needing to add their own personal flourishes and touches to the battle strategy.

On the other hand, there is simply the orthodox type, who trains diligently and becomes strong in a normal way. Former Kanto Champion Green Oak was a known proponent of this type of training- Simply becoming stronger without special tricks would allow you to take on any opponent.

There are also the type who have a more 'wild' approach- By living in the wilderness with their Pokemon, they are able to approach battling in a more natural manner, and so their thinking is often more flexible than Trainers who only battle in League circumstances. Champion Red, of Kanto, and Champion Alder, of Unova, are known to be of this type.

Champion Iris, on the other hand, is a much more idiosyncratic Trainer. Due to her empathy with her Pokemon, she says she feels their pain as her own. As a result, she has developed a battle style based around an overwhelming first strike... and more importantly, she has become able to direct her Pokemon while they are still in their Pokeballs, allowing them to perform powerful strategies the very instant they are released from their balls.

What is your strategy? How do you show your individuality in a Pokemon battle? What do you do that no other Trainer can do?
