the thing about merlin is that you WILL be his best friend, like it or not. he won't make you or anything, it'll just happen and yet you still have no choice in the matter. and you WILL find it absolutely delightful

i won't go into it now, because i fear i might explode, but there's so much to unpack about merlin and lancelot's friendship. the sheer trust? the closeness? the "i know you better than that" of it all? the i see you the way others do not?

so many things i didn't expect when accidentally becoming a not-a-gifmaker-gifmaker, such as: didn't know you got notified when someone used your gif? how exciting. also: applicable to other posts, of course, but the amount of my own stuff i see just floating around is wild.

was never much of a gamer myself beyond the occasional sims, but i was always a big sit-down-and-watch-others-do-it gal, that's what you get with growing up around older kids. recently i've been watching my little brother play fortnite (not necessarily my choice for a game, but whatever makes him happy) and my partner has been playing helldivers i think it's called.

oh and actually, the last games i got into on my switch was the giana sisters one, as well as unravel two!

i honestly had forgotten about kilgharrah's weird little goodbye in 04x02. what do you mean he was just going to let merlin sacrifice himself? and it had to be the cailleach that brought up the whole "it's not your time yet" point? yeah, uther is no longer in any position to be king, but arthur isn't exactly there yet either + he has morgana (and co) on his heels. and perhaps you could argue kilgharrah knew what lancelot would do, but why the big goodbye then? why the "oh, merlin, from the moment i met you-" moment? i guess it could've also been done for the sake of the audience, like a misdirect, but there? were other options? the scene could've just gone as usual, with merlin simply ignoring kilgharrah's advice. but no.

definitely an interesting choice when it comes to storytelling, it almost feels a little final already. like merlin has gotten him as far as he should've, which perhaps is simply there to mark the decline in choice-making (although, i'd argue that already happened in s2, so maybe just the darker tones in general is the point they're making).

then again, the cailleach does, in fact, say it's not his time yet. and if we're talking about that scene: i think an interesting choice of wording was also the whole "even if you want it to be" line that gets thrown in when talking about merlin sacrificing himself (see: "your time among men is not yet over..."). again, a very different kind of tone is brought in, which really makes me think that from the very beginning of s4 a darker storyline was being hinted at, even beyond the overall turnaround from s3 to s4 - as if solidifying the change in overarching concepts. all this to say - the whole "beginning of the end" feeling was very prominent in the first two episodes of s4, especially in the underlying themes. i honestly don't know how much of it was truly meant as such, but it's certainly a worthy checkpoint when rewatching, knowing what's to come.

so many emotional scenes in the hit tv show merlin, but one that never, ever fails to really get to me is the whole round table scene to being knighted scene. the words exchanged, the looks that say even more than could be said out loud. honestly, what an insane sequence.

watching merlin with me is like having your own personal special edition dvd narrator - trust and believe i'll stop midway through to tell you about a fun fact or a deleted scene that should've been riiiiight there
