99. The Kid
“A picture with a smile and perhaps a tear"
Tumblr media
Second film of the challenge and a touching one at that. Being my first silent movie, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I didn't know whether I was going to love it or hate it, laugh at it or cry at it. In fact I knew nothing at all about the film or in fact the genre. I am however, glad to say that this sweet and touching film has sparked my curiosity in this traditional genre and It was not the long, boring film I was expecting it to be.
It follows a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) who one day stumbles across a baby boy who has been left by his distraught mother. Not sure what to do, the man picks up the child and after some thought takes him back to his old and worn house where he brings the child up as his own. However, As his real mother yearns for her son five years later, their relationship soon comes under trouble.
I have always heard of Charlie Chaplin and practically everyone can pick out his distinctive look from a mile off but this was the first of his films I have seen and I'm sure it won’t be the last. The film itself started with the text “A picture with a smile and perhaps a tear”. I did in fact laugh rather a lot at the subtle humour and light hearted theme that ran throughout this film which dates back to 1921. I soon grew to love the over-the-top expressions and melodramatic music and I didn't want the film of only 60 minutes to draw to a close. The endearing relationship between the tramp and his adopted son was transformed from simple slapstick comedy to heart-warming chemistry and the film has a subtle way of winning you over to share the light-hearted fun that makes the movie a success.
This movie is short but sweet, a great way to end the day

100.    L.A Confidential
“Go back to Jersey, sonny. This is the City of the Angels, and you haven't got any wings.”
Tumblr media
So I have begun the challenge.
I had definitely heard of this film before so was eager to see what all the fuss was about. I was immediately drawn into the film from the start due to the commercial-like beginning and appealing set up. However, truth be told, within the first 10 to 15 minutes I did get a bit confused as character after character was introduced by name just to be killed off thirty seconds later...
As the story line progressed more and more names and allegations were thrown into the 1950′s tale of betrayal and corruption within the police force. It follows the troubled lives of three police officers (Ed Exley, Bud White and Jack Vincennes) who all investigate the same crime in ways that are known only to their nature. I was especially interested in Ed’s character who was played excellently by Guy Pearce who endured quite an impressive transformation in character  values by the end of the film.
There was times of suspense during the film and also many a time of overwhelming anger and hatred shown by Russell Crowe’s character which I deemed, at times, a little too much for this realistic setting. It was no doubt a slick and stylish film however at times I did feel confused with ‘who was who’ and ‘who did what’. Maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention but my confusion did ultimately lead to a lack of love for the movie, but that doesn't mean to say I didn't like it!
It is a good watch and I advise anyone who likes a classic 90s neo-noir to give it a go. Maybe I will like it more when I watch it again to understand the plot better....and to concentrate harder

First Post
Just a quick introduction to my blog....
- I don’t really know what I am doing since this is my first Tumblr experience. I felt obliged to make an account (not actually knowing what you do) after two friends of mine had told me how great (and addictive) it is. Once I had made my account, excuse the title, I realised that people write about stuff which they find interesting so it left me with a very hard question to answer....What do I find interesting???
Obviously, the first thing that came into mind was FILMS.
It’s really the only one thing I know about, so I thought, why not? After having completely abandoned the Moleskin film journal I got for Christmas, I decided that I will blog my reviews instead. However, I strived to make my blog a little it more interesting and so I came up with a challenge (a bit like the one Amy Adams had in the film ‘Julie & Julia’. I will watch and review the top 100 films in IMDb’s top 250 film list.....and I will do it in 6 months, starting from today!
Considering the list is constantly changing, I will do it in the order that it appears as today. Number 100 is a film called ‘L.A Confidential’ - Should be interesting!
- Just off to Tesco to grab some movie snacks then I shall begin...
