This is a tribute to Peter Benchley, not the movie Jaws (1975)
The author of 'Jaws' dedicated the rest of his life to reversing the unexpected negative impact his book had on the image of sharks.
Not only were sharks supposedly killed to create props for the movie, but 'Jaws' ended up awakening a bloody sea of ignorance in people at the time, who, haunted by an irrational fear and lack of understanding about marine predators, felt motivated to take to their boats and kill thousands of great white sharks in the most feared ways.
Such as the promotion of great white shark hunting championships that targeted the biggest ones, which were mostly pregnant females who, after being displayed as a trophy, had their jaws ripped off and their bodies discarded in the garbage.
Fear spread widely to all shark species, creating a lack of sensitivity that made it convenient to exterminate entire shark populations around the world that for a long time remained invisible to people's perception.
And this has continued to resonate for a long time with the entertainment media perpetuating the portrayal of sharks as monsters, newspapers favoring sensationalism about shark incidents, governments promoting shark culls, the advance of the unregulated predatory fishing industry, scientists not being supported in their studies of marine predators, the destruction of their natural habitats and the pollution of the oceans.
For thousands of years, sharks have taken care of the health of our oceans, older than the dinosaurs or the first trees, they have gone through great mass extinctions, they have been worshipped and respected as gods and guardians by oceanic peoples and now we demonize them in our media and exterminate them by the millions every year, who is the real monster?
We are shark-eaters.
I hope you can also hear what Peter Benchley himself had to say about all this:
I finally finished this artwork! Hope you like it. At some point I will adapt it for my little Redbubble store.🛍️
I reduced the quality to try to prevent them from stealing. I hope it's enough! 🙁

online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.
and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.
there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.
i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.

‘The Blair Witch Project’ – Original Stars Release a Statement Asking Lionsgate for Residuals & Recognition
A great read! Spread the word so we can get some attention on stuff going on in the indie horror sphere! I'm particularly excited for the indie filmmaker grant!

I really enjoy reading comics on their own websites, and get a lot of my indie recs from places like Hive works and KnifeBeetle instead of Webtoons and Tapas.
Long running webcomics like Ghost Junk Sickness, Namesake or Branching Out feel like heirloom comics lol, but I also really enjoy comics like Star Impact, or The Glass Scientist. Star Impact in particular has a very bustling community for a comic I've never seen advertised or really promoted. I think I found it through Hiveworks? But it's got an active comment section and a very active discord in its fanbases that I really enjoy engaging with~ There are several indie comic discords that I hang out in like that
I tend to see "top" webcomics as comics and creators who are active in the community, not just on discord but in places like Blue sky and here on Tumblr dot com. Active in the comics community across the board, you know? If you're a creator who advocates for comic spaces, like @featheerligght or @iceghosto, things move waaaayy up the list for me personally!
This got a little long-winded, but I really hope it helps!
Edit: I forgot to mention!! I also really enjoy sites and comics with RSS feeds, and use RSS readers to help organize indie comics so I can read them on their home websites!!
btw, people who read webcomics! which artists and which comics do you see as staples in the scene these days? i'm a little out of touch with what is currently considered Big Name Webcomics and im curious how much things have changed since i was up to date with what's popular. please do also mention if the comic is a webtoon/tapas original or if it's standalone on its own website!
as an example: when i was at the height of my webcomic reading back in the late 2010s, i saw Gunnerkrigg Court, Paranatural, Prague Race, and Vattu as some of the "top" webcomics
edit: im sorry if i wasnt clear, im not looking for reading recommendations! im curious what people ARE reading

I'm going to have to talk about Webtoons(company) at one point, and its... impact on the webcomic sphere too. Trying to find the most eloquent way to say that these companies aren't your friends, and that I am seeing more and more creators getting chewed up and spit out when these places are done with them. I'm legit worried for how The Content Creator model is going to hurt so many more people, who have been led to believe that this is the only way to get their work out there.
