High road to tollways integration: Two options available for motorists
Mark July 1, 2024 on your calendar since this day signals the unification of RFID cards currently in use by tollways in Luzon. It means that only a single RFID card will activate and hoist the bar as the tollway operators will go cash-less at the same time for a seamless travel system.
The so-called âToll Collection Inter-Operabilityâ has begun its test run, with only selected vehicles taking part Wednesday last week in the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), Skyway, Manila-Cavite Expressway (Cavitex) and Cavite-Laguna Expressway Calax).
Once the âinter-operabilityâ system is completed and put in place, motorists are given two options, according to the Toll Regulatory Board. One, they can get a new account and a new RFID sticker or, choose which of the Easytrip or Autosweep electronic stickers to retain and use.
Easytrip belongs to the group under the control of Manuel V. Pangilinan while Autosweep is operated by San Miguel Corporation led by Ramon S. Ang, president and chief executive officer.
These two business titans having envisioned the unified tollways system a few years ago, are pushing for it to reach perfection. Letâs hope no one throws a monkey wrench into this noble plan.
Geometry C EV: Geely has the right angle
Trumpeting the Monday launch of its new electric car as âa paradigm shiftâ, Geely Philippines hosted an event at its North Edsa showroom that also ushered the arrival of Naoyuki Takeda as new president and CEO of Geelyâs corporate vehicle, Sojitz G Auto Philippines.
In his inaugural address, Takeda spelled out a plan that could breach the conventional boundaries of the automotive industry. âOur commitment goes beyond words; itâs evident in the actions weâre taking, the changes weâre making, and the improvements weâre implementing.â
With Takeda behind the steering wheel, Geely is angling for a definitive role not only âas auto providers but also as contributors to the dreams and aspirations of individuals seeking a better and more fulfilling life through their vehicle.â
Furthermore, Takeda pledged to strive for a 5-star customer experience as his top priority.
Emphasizing the value of media partnerships, he encouraged motoring journalists to actively engage, saying that âyour insights are invaluable, and your feedback is crucialâ.
Geely said the unveiling of the Geometry C compact crossover signified its continued evolution and contribution to a sustainable and aspirational future.
Geometry C EV runs on a 70-kWh battery pack that has a range of up to 485 kilometers. Propelled by an electric motor that churns out 200-horsepower maximum and 310-Nm of torque, the EV is rated capable of speeding up from 0 to 100 km/h in just seven seconds. Its speed tops off at 150-km/h. This promises to be another awesome EV that should spark fierce competition in its segment, provided it is priced reasonably.
âTaralets Pinasâ rolls out : Mitsubishi turns 60
Like hitting the proverbial âtwo birds with one stone,â Mitsubishi Motors has launched a nationwide campaign celebrating the Filipino spirit of adventure and its 60th anniversary as well.
The double- barreled move, Mitsubishi says, is a way to promote the âInstagram-ableâ tourist spots and at the same time crow about the features of its vehicles that have given it the top 2 ranking, next only to Toyota in terms of sales nationwide.
By this time, the TARALETS PINAS campaign shall have rolled out in certain provinces â Bacolod, Guimaras, Iloilo, Pampanga, South Cotabato, Davao, Cebu, Kalinga, Baguio, Bontoc, Siquijor.
With every episode showcasing the rich and colorful heritage and culture of each province, motoring enthusiasts are invited to make their journey better and more exhilarating with â what else, but â Mitsubishi autos.
Backstopping the campaign is an interactive website which features helpful information on destinations, road trip itineraries, and food trip tips. Motorists, their families and friends will do well to share their travel stories, experiences, and photos. MMTC President & CEO Takeshi Hara said during the campaign launch, âWe encourage Filipinos to pack their bags, fuel up their Mitsubishi vehicles, and embark on their own TARALETS PINAS adventure. We canât wait to see the amazing places youâll visit and the incredible experiences youâll create with Mitsubishi Motors.â This should be a tantalizing challenge for motorists to take up.

FFW-Visayas Local Unions Join Legal Challenge to âIndecentâ Constitutional Proposal
Iloilo City â In a conference in Tigbauan, Province of Iloilo, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW)-Visayas local unions and affiliate have announced their readiness to join forces with FFW, other labor groups in the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition, Church-Labor Conference and other like-minded organizations in a legal battle in court and in the parliament of the streets to block the charter change proposal using the âpeopleâs initiativeâ.
The FFW-Visayas Unions are planning to join FFW National Initiative to file a petition, before the COMELEC or Supreme Court, challenging the legality of the proposed tinkering to insert âjoint votingâ through a peopleâs initiative (PI) as it is a substantial alteration or a revision of the fundamental law of the land.
Lambino vs COMELEC and COMELEC itself in its Resolution 10650 prohibited PI to include substantial change.
The FFW Visayas signed the âManifesto of the FFW-Visayas Against Charter Changeâ today.
Warie Espada, union president of the Lopez Sugar Central-FFW Chapter, asserted, âour priority now is our strong advocacy for a legislated P150 wage hike, across the board, nationwide, towards living wage â indi kami sa CHACHA.â
âThis decision was deliberated during the FFWâs regional meeting in the Visayas, indicating a united front from the local unions and chapters in the Visayas,â FFW Vice President for Visayas Tiffany Ong said.
Ms. Ong, who is also the union president of the Iloilo Mission Hospital Employees Union-FFW, asserted, âwe staunchly oppose the proposed amendment via peopleâs initiative, it is an âindecent proposalâ.
This tinkering that aims to enable joint voting between the Senate and the House of Representatives to modify the nationâs supreme law is a revision. Such will result to a substantial or structural change of the balance of power between both Chambersâ the House of Representatives would overwhelm the Senate by numerical superiority in the deliberation and voting process.
Echoing Justice Antonio Carpioâs views, FFW contends that the peopleâs initiative mechanism should be limited to straightforward amendments but in prohibits substantial change that amounts to revisions.
Significantly shifts in the balance of power between the legislative chambers, require a more thorough and considered approach through a deliberative body.
Ma. Victoria Bellosillo, FFW Women Network President, added, âwe acknowlege that we need constitutional reforms but charter change (chacha) is not the workersâ priority nowâ.
âWala rin ito sa 5-year plan ng NEDA â thus, instead of allocating P28 billion for this CHACHA, canât we redirect the funds to âTANGOâ â trabaho, ayuda, negosyo, gawing oportunidad para sa obrero?â, humorously quipped Bellosillo who is also the union president of the Central Philippines University Rank and File Labor Union-FFW.
NEDA said that Charter Change requires P28 billion from proposal to its ratification or rejection.
Bellosillo explained that this substantial amount could be more effectively used for job creation, providing assistance to the unemployed, and offering training and skills development to enhance employability.
âAdditionally, it could serve as additional income if allocated to workerâs livelihood or funding for MSMEs and small entrepreneurs, rapidly benefiting workers and small business ownersâ, added Espada who is also the Chairperson of the Food, Beverages and Agriculture Industry Trade Federation (TF-1) of FFW.

Suzuki 5-door Jimny lands in local shores
Last November and December, there were few photos circulating over social media of car carrier trucks in the countryâs expressways transporting the 5-door model of the Suzuki Jimny, which caused speculation as to when Suzuki Philippines will introduce the model in the country.
That speculated ended after Suzuki Philippines formally sent to members of the motoring media an invite to launch the 5-door Jimny on January 25, 2024 at The Cove, Okada Manila.
âThe Jimny, deeply rooted in a rich heritage, stands as a testament to Suzukiâs commitment to excellence. Its popularity is not just a testament to its past glory but a promise of exciting journeys ahead,â he explained.
For his part, Norihide Takei, the Director and General Manager for Automobile Division of Suzuki Philippines, emphasized that the Jimny is as a lightweight, compact, authentic off-road vehicle capable of conquering diverse terrains.
âGet ready for an incredible journey and experience the beauty of places yet undiscovered that Nobody But Jimny can bring you,â Takei added.
EXTERIOR
When it comes to length, the 5-door model is 13 inches or 340 mm longer than the 3-door model.
The Jimny 5-door has a sturdy square body that not only conveys off-road capability and durability but also contributes to the driverâs situational awareness.
The upright A-pillars and flat clamshell bonnet improve visibility through the front windshield, while the dipped lines of the driver and passenger windows extend visibility from the side.
The 5-door also model boasts chrome accents on the front grille, a distinctive feature that accentuates the grilleâs unique 5-slot design. Additionally, features such as the signature round headlamps and 15-inch dark-metallic alloy wheels further enhance the overall robust exterior styling.
INTERIOR
The 5-door Jimny avoids unnecessary colors or decorations in its interior to minimize distractions, allowing the driver to focus on navigating the vehicle. Horizontal lines on the instrument panel and vertical lines in the meter cluster and center console panels assist the driver in gauging the vehicleâs angle, especially in challenging terrains such as rough or mountainous terrains.
Its rear seats have undergone enhancements, featuring thicker seat cushions to provide better seating posture and comfortably accommodate two adults.
The extended wheelbase of the 5-door model has resulted in an expanded luggage area. Although the luggage box from the 3-door model has been removed, the lowered floor height and increased depth of the luggage area now offer a spacious 211 liters of luggage capacity (with the rear seatback raised).
Similar to the 3-door model, the luggage area in the 5-door model comes equipped with an accessory socket.
SAFETY
Safety is paramount in the Jimny 5-door GLX variant, featuring SRS front airbags for both the driver and seat passengers, as well as side airbag and curtain airbags for occupants in both the front and rear seats. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a reverse parking camera and sensors to enhance overall safety awareness.
PERFORMANCE
The Jimny 5-door features a powerful 1.5-liter engine, tuned for off-roading adventures. With a 340 mm longer wheelbase than the 3-door model, it maintains crucial off-roading featuresâ ALLGRIP PRO, a sturdy ladder frame, exceptional approach, breakover, and departure angles, 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil spring and part-time 4WD with low-range transfer gear. Built for authentic off-road ruggedness and agile maneuverability, it serves as the ideal companion for global adventurers and wilderness professionals.
The New Jimny 5-door offers monotone color options for the GL and GLX variants, including Jungle Green, Celestial Blue Pearl Metallic, Arctic White Pearl, and Granite Gray Metallic.
