If over twelve hours on a plane was bad—and it was, it was really bad—then being handed dense legal documents to read after twelve hours on a plane was a unique type of hell that Phoenix was experiencing for what he really hoped was the only time.  Knowing Miles, this would happen again. And Phoenix would let it. He wouldn’t be thrilled about it, but he would let it happen.  He slumped back in his chair and dragged a hand down his face, reading the same paragraph for a third time. He was out of practice. It was probably a minor miracle he managed to graduate law school and pass the bar at all, but now that he’d been disbarred for over a year, well… It wasn’t exactly a skill set he exercised daily in his random assortment of minimum-wage jobs.  Although Trucy sure tried to wiggle her way out of every loophole she could find.

They don’t talk about it for a while, after Mia dies. They probably should. The elephant in the room looms menacingly at all times and finally starts trumpeting its horn when Phoenix goes to get changed and realizes that, between the two of them, he needs to be doing laundry twice a week.  Not that any of his clothes really fit Maya. He never lets her forget that she has to climb onto the counters to reach the top shelves, and in return, she steals his comfiest sweatpants and rolls them up in every way she can when she doesn’t want to wear her robes.  “I should’ve brought more clothes,” she muses one day while swimming in an old rock band shirt. Phoenix knows it’s one with holes in the armpits.  “You should’ve,” he agrees.
