D + P!
Hehe, DP. 😉
D. A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
Hmm. A couple of years ago I would have said Tom Riddle/Harry Potter, for community-fit reasons. But the ‘just can’t’ won out and I moved on from trying to make connections in that fandom. So that might be my most honest answer—these days I scope out the community and ship tropes/trends before I commit to it, and I don’t get into something that I don’t think I’ll enjoy the community space for. Which might seem a little backwards to how I’ve usually seen people discuss fannish feelings, but idk! I have plenty of other things to do in my free time, so what time I give to fandom has to feel fulfilling.
P. Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
MMORPG AU. Each half of the ship plays the same online game. Do they live in the same city, or across the country/world from one another? They flirt in chat but deny they are flirting. Other characters from the canon are variously guild members in the game or real-life friends. The intimacy milestones are moving from in-game text chat to external text chat to voice chat to video calls or meeting in-person. There can be an identity porn aspect of it where they actually have met offline and didn’t know the other person was their in-game situationship! Long nights revealing personal thoughts over mob grinding sessions, anticipation as the guild prepares for a boss raid, petty arguments over whose in-game class is best. And, for the long-distance couples, sleepovers together during those offline meetups. 💖

F and X!
Hello, and thank you so much! ❤️
F. What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
If we count through breaks, I’ve been an HP fan for over 20 years. Not counting the break time it’s more like 10-12 years? But I think that’s pretty typical of how any long-term fannishness would look for me—there’s going to be other priorities along the way! I’m in a lull period with HP for now, as well, and although I still consider myself a fan it’s not exactly getting most of my attention. But I intend to keep carrying pretty much all of my fandoms with me for as long as am in fandom. (I made a list of them! Whenever I nominate for exchanges I pull up my list and fit the ships to the event lol.)
X. A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Oooh. I love precocious mean boys a lot (Tom Riddle, Silas Octakiseron, Nathaniel from the Bart Seq, Edmund Pevensie, Ciel Phantomhive). Is that a trope? Maybe a more traditional answer is forced proximity. Sharing a bed, snowed-in, having to work together, magical bond—I’m a big sucker for any time two characters I like have no choice but to be physically around one another (and then feelings conversations happen).

Hi, phantomato! I hope you're having a lovely timezone. For the ask game: B, K, and/or T?
Good timezone to you, too! ❤️ And thank you for these exciting prompts!
B. A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Challenging! These days I largely get into canons after figuring out there’s a ship I’ll like, and I’m pretty accurate at guessing that. Last time it happened was probably… Bunny from The Charioteer? Which I went into for the main ship, Ralph/Laurie (a good ship!), and then I read @mildredmost’s Golden Age. That fic absolutely got me shipping Bunny/Hazell, a ship that doesn’t interact in the book, and more broadly cemented my love for Bunny as a character. The power of a great fic!
K. What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Haaaa well I do tend to like characters who don’t develop, but. I’ll shout out the book I just finished, Henry Henry by Allen Bratton, whose main character Hal is delightful. He’s a terrible person and doesn’t really get less terrible by the end, but what develops is our understanding of him, and perhaps his own sense of self. That’s the sort of development I most enjoy. ❤️
T. Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
Yes!!! Tom Riddle/Voldemort can feel love: romantic, platonic, every sort you can imagine. Albus’ speculation was only just that, speculation, and certainly Albus has no personal experience with the matter in order to actually know. Not that I’m reading HP fic anymore, but back when I was active in the fandom, I wouldn’t read or would drop fics which made Tom incapable of love. My least-favorite way of handling villains, tbh. He is interesting to me if he can love, has loved, and makes the choices that he does regardless.

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
V - Which character do you relate to most?
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

Speak your truth! ❤️
I adore Alec and I agree with everything you wrote. The novel lets him off lightly when other characters with similar behavior either meet a worse end or are more obviously the target of malicious gossip. Alec confesses his infidelity to Sandy and it seems as though he’s on the path to being forgiven.
What I love about Alec is that he has a very steady, calm personality but not that same seeming desire for quiet monogamy that Ralph has. (Not that I agree Ralph is always that way, but.) He’s a counter-argument to Laurie’s awful prejudice that the whole of the Bridstow queer scene is unserious people, and that serious people could never want unconventional relationship structures, prefer casual dating and sex, or just be personally messy. And I like that he has these seeming contradictions! It makes him more interesting to me.
Anyway this is also why I think there should be more Alec/Bunny fic. (Also just because Bunny is the best!) They have a lot of potential parallels and I want to think more about their mutual attraction.
I loved your TC tag games answers, but I was of course shocked at your nomination of my boy Alec for 'most deserving of a worse fate'!! So, now that I have mentally prepared myself, please can I have all your worst thoughts on Alec! I can take it 🥺
Ok so. I will preface this by saying that I don't actually dislike Alec! But I feel like there are places where he gets off lightly compared to some other characters in the book, so here we go...
It's fairly apparent he's been unfaithful to Sandy (and, possibly, to Ralph - given that comment about his "claustrophobia") but that's very much just handwaved away. And compare that to how Madge is portrayed! A degree of that is Laurie's (*cough* Renault's *cough*) distaste for certain types of women, but it's pretty noticeable.
He could have warned Ralph earlier that Bunny couldn't be trusted and potentially saved a fair bit of grief, given he knew that Bunny had clearly been reading Ralph's diary and Ralph didn't know.
He's just... not all that nice to Sandy. Obviously Sandy is written in a way that doesn't make him immediately endearing, but I do feel quite sorry for him - he's clearly got good reason to worry about Alec having his head turned by someone else! Like I said in my answers, I get a bit of a feeling that Alec keeps him around so he's always got company when he wants it, but the commitment doesn't seem equal on both sides and it doesn't feel like Alec respects him much.
(I am now hiding.)

BartNat On a personal note, I posted an artwork I recently posted on Instagram as well, and Stroud commented on it! I was sooooo surprised as it was the first time I had ever done this and I am still so excited. (My Instagram name is @pompomoo, but I have posted fewer works than on the Tumblr.) I'm glad everyone got to see it on the Tumblr and I'm glad I painted it, even though it was a lot of work. I always look at the comments on the hashtag too. Thank you so much for everything!

I've been drawing a lot of manga lately as well, so I don't have anything to publish for a while again. I will come back to post more drawings when things settle down.

I started posting about short fic when I was still in fandom spaces where 100k+ fics were held up as the best and most ideal form of fanfic. I’m not active in those spaces anymore, and that’s a good thing for me—but it does mean I don’t share as many reminders that short fic is good fic, and most fic is short fic.
I remember starting out and thinking that I would not ever be a good author if I couldn’t hit 100k. I made multiple attempts before I hit that milestone; I’ve never hit it again. But by the time I reached 100k in something of my own I’d learned so much more about the world of short fic and come to know and love many stories under 10k, 5k, 2k. I no longer felt ashamed to write short fic. These are the stories that have made me a better writer, encouraged me to experiment with form and subject, and kept me excited about creating for my fandoms.
Short fic is satisfying, good, compelling, emotional, hot, insightful, well-written, and everything else. Fuck, I’ll say it: short fic can be a slow burn, too. It’s just a way to tell a story, valid as any other. And, critically: almost all fic that gets written is short. It is the backbone of fandom. Read it, write it, rec it.
if you see me posting about how awesome short fics are, odds are pretty good that I just scrolled past a post about how only 100K+ fics are "real fics" or "full fics" etc.
I see that, and it makes me feel so sad for all of the authors out there who read those posts and wish they could write long fic because they think it's the only way that people will be interested in their stories.
It also makes me sad for the readers who don't have the time or the attention span for stories that long and worry that they're missing out on something great as a result.
Anyway, I just saw that one about how someone got acclimatized to reading stories of 250K and I just-
