sweetener livestream highlights
album related:
started working on sweetener in 2016
can’t choose a favorite on the album but r.e.m would be her first choice right now
“sweetener” was the first song recorded on the album. she decided to name the album after it because it was the “weirdest, most bizarre” song she’s ever recorded
doesn’t know when tour dates are coming out and hasn’t gotten far in the process. but it’s not anytime soon and we have time
scrapped around 30 songs for the album and is so glad that the album didn’t turn out to be what it originally started out as.
more excited for this album than any others because she falls more and more in love with albums as she records them
on unreleased tracks: there’s a reason why she scraps them and she doesn’t want people to go out of their way to listen to them. she was picky when choosing the songs for sweetener and thinks they fit together perfectly. she wanted to make this album special and different
on “goodnight n go”: she made the song a really long time ago and forgot when she was rehearsing with brian and scott they brought up the song and told her she had to put it on the album so she did
most excited to perform god is a woman live because she’s been rehearsing it for the vmas and it’s sick
“sweetener” was the perfect title for her current album of work because it sounds “sweet” and like “clouds”is about sweetening the atmosphere
“borderline” was originally missy’s song and when she heard it she asked if she could be on it, then asked to have the song, and missy agreed
starting to record her fifth album in september (!!!!) and has 10 songs written already
no bonus tracks are going to be released for the album
“god is a woman” and “pete davidson” were the last songs added to the album
“everytime” and “sweetener” are songs she’s going to turn up to on tour. they make her want to ‘dance her ass off’
“borderline” and “sweetener” are ‘hoe bops’
“god is a woman” came most natural to her, she wrote part of the song while sitting in a makeup chair the night before she had to turn in the album. she thought she was done with everything and the song just felt right to her. her label pitched the idea of the song and were originally going to hand it off to a rapper and she begged to write the rest and keep it
pharrell pushed her into a weird new world of music and influenced her to use her voice in new ways. she didn’t want to keep making the same thing
“over the moon grateful, nervous, excited, emotionally drained but so proud and excited.” “sweetener” is a breath of fresh air, takes us somewhere new, and exceeds the pop expectation. she wanted to “challenge our palette” she’s so proud and connected to this album on a spiritual level and has never felt this way about any of her work
when the album dropped at midnight her crew all sang “happy sweetener day” to the tune of happy birthday on the livestream :)))
misc:
on her hand injury: said she was shooting carpool karoke and took a bad “ridiculous” fall while filming. didn’t go into specifics because they should be posting the clip sometime in the future
dropping “a ton” of new merch tomorrow and there’s a lot to choose from
