One of my favorite series is an often-overlooked, relatively obscure series called Dennou Coil. My goal with this post is to hopefully convince a few more people to give this wonderful show a shot! Here’s a synopsis, via ANN:
Eleven years after the introduction of internet-connected, augmented reality eyeglasses and visors, Yūko Okonogi moves with her family to Daikoku City, the technological center of the emerging half-virtual world. Yūko joins her grandmother’s “investigation agency” comprised of children equipped with virtual tools and powerful metatags. She quickly crosses paths with Yūko Amasawa, an expert hacker of the virtual environment, as Amasawa relentlessly seeks to “unlock” the mystery of a computer virus that emerges from an inaccessible corrupted space.
The series starts out mostly light-hearted and fun, and gradually turns darker, creepier, and more emotional as the story goes on. The director, Mitsuo Iso, is well-known for his animation work on Evangelion and various Ghibli movies. The character designs are somewhat simple, but the actual animation is smooth and expressive. Dennou Coil was a series in planning for over ten years, and it shows–the story, technology, characters, and creatures are all well-developed.
Here are a few more reasons to check Dennou Coil out:
- The two main leads of the show are both well-written female characters whose relationship to one another is the basis for the story. There are several other well-written female characters, both lead and side characters, as well.
- There is almost no fanservice in this series. Thank goodness, as most of the main characters are around twelve years old.
- There are a number of cute and interesting creatures in the series, from Densuke, the goofy-looking cyberdog with a heart of gold, to Saatchi, the bizarre and sometimes creepy antivirus patrolling the city, to tiny kitties with hand-ears that play rock-paper-scissors against each other, to the strange, bald Oyaji, and several interesting “glitch” animals.
- It captures the fun, mischief, and mystery of childhood better than most stories I’ve seen. If you like urban legends, this is the show for you!
- Also, the show contains an episode about sentient beards. I mean, what’s not to like?
All-in-all, it’s a creative, well-rounded series that moved me deeply. I hope some of you reading this will give it a chance, and let me know what you think of it when you’re done!
This poll's results make me sad. This is still one of my personal favorite anime series 17 years (and hundreds more anime I've seen) later! It's on Netflix now (Den-noh Coil), please give it a try! I even made a recommendation post about it some years ago so you can find out more about it.
Cut animated by Shinji Otsuka (animation director on Kiki’s Delivery Service and key animator on FLCL, Millennium Actress, My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday, Princess Mononoke, and Whisper of the Heart)
This scene had 280 frames and Otsuka drew sketches for every one of them, since he felt like only he could do them. His sketches ended up needing very little correcting so they were mostly left untouched.
Great post! I'll add that it's best to monitor hatchlings/nestlings that you've placed in a nest/fake nest for an hour or two to make sure the parents are in fact returning to feed the baby. If not, they may need to go to wildlife rehab, as baby birds need to be fed frequently throughout the day. Of course, returning to the parents is always best, but this is not always possible.
If you suspect an animal has been even touched by a cat, they NEED to go to wildlife rehabilitation to receive antibiotics ASAP, even if they appear uninjured. Animals, especially birds, can die from infections with even the tiniest pinprick from a cat's claws or teeth, and it can also be easy to overlook injuries if you're not trained to spot them.
I also recommend calling a local wildlife rehabilitaton group if you're uncertain you're doing the right thing, because they will have a series of questions to guide you through what the right steps are. It's a good idea to have the number of a group programmed in your phone in case you need it!
If you have a baby bird or other wild animal in your possession who needs to go to wildlife rehabilitation, DO NOT feed them anything or give/offer them water. Keep any wildlife in a WARM, DARK, QUIET, CONFINED place, like in a box or dog/cat crate in the bathroom with the lights turned off. It is a big help if you or someone you know can drive the animal to the facility/volunteer, oftentimes wildlife rehabilitators are stretched thin and it can be very difficult to coordinate transportation.
Thanks for caring about wildlife!
It’s FLEDGLING BIRD SEASON here in North America…
…which means it’s time for an annual reminder not to kidnap baby birds. Fact: most species of birds have almost no sense of smell. Someone probably told you that if you touch a baby bird, the mother will smell you on it and reject her baby. THAT IS NOT THE CASE. If you’ve found a baby bird and you touched it, all is not lost, you can still return it to mom and dad!
Pictured: a young Mourning Dove, after being rescued from the tender mercies of my dog, circa spring 2005. It’s a fledgling! Note how it has most of its feathers, but still looks a bit awkward and scruffy, and, being unable to properly fly, can be caught by an elderly husky or a child.
Help, I found a baby bird on the ground, what do I do???
Hatchlings/Nestlings: IF it is naked or covered in fluffy down and/or pinfeathers and cannot flutter successfully, it’s a hatchling or nestling, and has fallen from its nest prematurely. Look for the nest- if you find it and can reach it, return baby and then leave and let the parents return. If you can’t find the nest, or if you find it in pieces on the ground, use a small box/yogurt container lined with dried grass and attach as close as possible to where you found the bird or where you think the nest was. If it’s cold, warm it in your hands for a few minutes before putting it back. RETURN BABY!!!!
Fledglings: If you spot a young bird covered with feathers (may have a few patches of fluff) on the ground, it’s a fledgling (bird tween) who is currently working on flying 101 homework, which is normal and fine. Hanging out on the ground is part of the learning to fly process! If it looks like it’s in immediate danger (i.e. of being run over, stepped on, or eaten by a cat or dog), the best thing you can do for it is to gently scoop it up and place it in the low branches of a nearby tree or shrub, and then LEAVE. The parents are likely nearby watching, and will return once the coast is clear. If it flutter-hops away from you and you can’t catch it, then don’t worry! It just successfully avoided a predator (you), and therefore can probably continue to do so. LEAVE BABY ALONE!!!
DO NOT: Try to feed it, bring it into your house or car, or take it to your local domestic animal vet or shelter.
IF it IS actually for-real injured (bleeding, broken limb, attacked by cat, struck window), you can catch it, put it in a dark cardboard box (with NO food or water, young birds can aspirate easily) and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation professional, but keep in mind that they get a LOT of fledgling birds, and those birds have a pretty high mortality rate. They may tell you that there is nothing you or they can do but allow nature to take its course, and that’s hard, but important to hear and respect.
u ever see someone with extremely fucked up views (or actions) and think wowww if a couple of things in my life went the tiniest bit differently that would have been me
Love that this post is still getting notes periodically a full decade later!
I've been to some of these places in Kyoto, as well as other places featured in the series, multiple times now (and I still think of Uchouten Kazoku when I visit them).
Can we talk about the scenery in Uchouten Kazoku/Eccentric Family, though? So, so gorgeous.
the escort missions in pokemon mystery dungeon are so funny like yeah of course we'll protect you and help you reach your friend!! but we're multitasking missions so we're taking you along to confront several aggressive and dangerous outlaws along the way. you have to fight them with us. or just try to stand in a corner or something. sorry.
