June 19th, 2020, 5:07 pm.
It had been two years, ten months, and 15 days since Danny had spoken to Sam. Two years, ten months, and 15 days since he had felt fully whole. And two years, ten months, and 15 days full of regret. But who was counting, right?
Danny was. He had begun counting the second he boarded that plane with a one-way ticket out of Frankenmuth, headed straight for “The Big Apple” to start his life over. Away from his family, away from his high school friends and the worst of all, away from Sam. Thankfully Josh had already moved to New York the second he graduated, studying Film Production at Columbia University and practically adopting Danny the second he got there, making sure he was adjusting to the city well and spending as much time with him as their schedules allowed. Coincidentally, Josh’s former roommate had decided to move out right before Danny made the choice to go to New York, leaving the second bedroom of his apartment open for him to fill.
As the distance between Sam and him increased, Danny only became closer to the twins. Even though they had treated him like he was their younger brother ever since he moved in next to the Kiszka’s at age seven, living with Josh who called Jake on facetime every day truly made them the older brothers he had always wished for.
“Can I get you anything, sir?”
Danny removes his forehead from the cool glass of the plane window, turning to see a flight attendant standing expectantly in the isle with a too-sweet smile. “Oh, uh no I’m ok, thanks.”
“Alright then. Just letting you know we should be landing in about 20 minutes, so could you please fasten your seatbelt?”
Danny glances down, realizing he hadn’t re-buckled his belt after he had gone to the bathroom to stretch his legs and pull himself together as his family would surely be waiting for him at the luggage return. “Of course, my bad.” He re-buckles it before leaning his head back against the seat as she walks away, closing his eyes and praying that the next few months of his life would pass quickly.
--------------------------------------------------------
Grey suitcase, purple tag. Grey suitcase, purple tag. Grey suitcase, purple tag. Shit, there it is. Danny rushes to grab his bag, feeling claustrophobic as the luggage return fills with more and more people. Go out the door, find the car. Out the door, find the car. Drive home and pray he’s not there. It takes him mere seconds to find his parents’ car as his mom frantically waves from across the lot, grinning as she darts between the traffic the instant she sees Danny.
She tackles him in a hug as she rocks them back and forth, her grip on him crushing as he tries to keep his balance. “Oh my god you look so good, how was Junior year? Have you been eating enough? Getting out and having some fun right?”
“Hey mom.”  He locks his arms around her, hugging her just as tight as he smiles. “It was good, yes I have, and yes I do. You don’t have to worry about me.”
She pulls away teary eyed, still smiling wide at him. “Oh, I know, but that’s my job. And you haven’t been home for so long, how else am I supposed to know how you’re doing?”
“Yeah… sorry about that. You know how it is, between school and work it’s hard to find the time to get back to Michigan for a long visit.”
“Don’t worry about it.” She waves her hand in the air as if she were shooing away his apologies, taking Danny’s suitcase in the other as she leads him to the car. “You’re in college, I get it. You have better things to do than visit us. Like go to parties. And date. Meet any cute girls recently?”
His heart sinks at the question, trying to keep his smile from faltering as they reach her car. “Too busy to try and date right now, mom.” He takes the bag from her, easily sliding it into the trunk as she watches him.
“Bullshit. C’mon, you’re a young, attractive guy. You must have some girls in your lectures throwing themselves at you.”
“You know me, I’m too focused on my studies to pay attention to that. It’s fine, I promise. I’m doing good in New York, living with Josh has been great, I’ve made some good friends. Dating just isn’t at the top of my priorities right now.” He hopes that his explanation will be enough for his mom to drop the topic as they get into the car, her prying being in good intention but only resurfacing old wounds.
“Oh! Speaking of, Karen and Kelly are having a barbeque tonight to celebrate you, Jake and Josh coming home for the summer. Your dad would have come with me to get you but he’s at their place right now helping set up.”
“Great, that’s great. Can’t wait to see everyone again.” Not everyone. Danny tries to keep his mind away from him as he listens to his mom talk throughout the drive, the pit in his stomach only growing as they turn down more and more familiar streets. A small weight lifts off his shoulders when he doesn’t see him in the front yard as they pass the Kiszka’s house, pulling into his childhood home’s driveway, his thoughts louder than his mother’s voice as they get out of the car.
“Danny?”
“Hm?”
“I said, do you want to go settle in and freshen up before you head over?”
“Oh, yeah that’d be great. Sorry, didn’t hear you, must be jetlagged.”
“You’re ok, it’s alright if you need to take a nap before tonight, everyone will completely understand. It took Josh a day to sleep off the travel.”
Danny snorts as he extends the handle of his suitcase, closing the trunk with the other hand. “Yeah, I bet he did. I swear, he gets tired from taking the subway for 15 minutes, can’t imagine him traveling on a plane without at least two naps. Should be alright though, thanks.”
“Of course. Alright, I’m going to go over to the Kiszka’s and let them know you’re here, see if they need any help and all that. The fridge and pantry are stocked up if you need a snack, and your room’s just as you left it.”
“Thanks, mom. Love you, see you in a few.”
“Love you too, Daniel. Don’t take too long.” Her tone is light, joking as she spares a glance behind her to smile before disappearing into the backyard.
It’s just a few hours, it’ll be fine. I can avoid him all night, there should be enough people to do that easily. Just a few hours and then I don’t have to see him all summer. Except he lives next door. And his older brothers are my closest friends and roommate. And our parents are friends. Should be easy to avoid him, right? God, I’m fucking screwed.
The second he reaches his room, he faceplants into his bed, nearly toppling off the edge of the twin after getting accustomed to his queen bed in New York. Rolling onto his back, he finally takes the room in. It was exactly how he left it the last time he visited, unchanged from when he lived there, like everything had frozen in time as he continued on. Everything in his room reminded Danny of a simpler time, of him. Of laying side by side on his too small bed, talking for hours as they stared up at the soft yellow of the Neil Young Harvest poster hung on the ceiling. The old acoustic guitar in the corner they would trade back and forth on his floor for hours now sat dusty and unused. The singe mark on the wood of his windowsill from the time they got too high and let the end of their joint burn out on it. He was everywhere, in everything. Danny could never escape him no matter how far he went, everything always circled back to him. He could grow and change and learn, but Frankenmuth would forever be there to remind him of everything that once was.
Might as well get up and get the party over with instead of sitting here feeling sorry for myself. At the thought, Danny slides off his bed, landing hard on the ground before forcing himself up to find something to change into. After travelling all day, he was eager to get out of his loose jeans and sweatshirt, knowing it was too nice of a day to be comfortable wearing that outside.
He opens his suitcase unenthusiastically, hoping that he had remembered to pack at least one pair of shorts. Thankfully, he had, and he finds his (quite short) yellow shorts and his Howlin’ Wolf muscle tee in no time, changing quickly and slipping into his old, slip on vans before trudging down the stairs and out the front door, heading straight for the Kiszka’s backyard.
“DANNY!” The second he walks through the side gate, Danny only sees the blur of Jake before he slams into him, knocking the wind from his lungs as he loses his footing, falling backwards and pulling Jake down with him.
When he catches his breath, Danny wraps his arms around the other man with a grin as they lay on the soft grass. “Jake! Great to see you, man. Missed you.”
Jake loosens his grip before getting up and offering Danny a hand to pull him up. “Missed you too, it’s been way too long.”
“DANNY!” This time it’s Josh who slams into him, practically jumping into his arms as Danny catches him. “I’ve missed you so much, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen each other.” He fake sobs into his neck, pulling out everything he learned from the years of theater he did in high school to put on his act.
“We live together, Josh. I saw you three days ago.” Danny’s voice is flat, but he can’t help a smile from creeping onto his face as Josh pulls away from him grinning.
“Yeah, I know, but I still missed you.” After Danny makes his rounds of teary hugs with his dad, Karen, and Kelly, he looks around the yard, hating himself for noticing his absence.
“Sam’s inside cutting some watermelon, he’ll be out soon.” Karen says with a smile, picking up on what he was looking for and thinking her comment was helpful.
“Oh, great. That’s great.” They don’t know. He never told them.
“C’mon Danny, Josh and I started day drinking an hour ago, you gotta catch up to us.”
“Jacob!” Karen swats his arm as he passes her, already on his way to start making a drink for Danny.
“What? He’s 21 now, it’s legal.”
Danny’s smile is wiped clean off his face as he hears the back door slide open, turning to see Sam standing frozen in the doorframe with a large bowl of watermelon in his hands. Say something. Say something or it’ll be weird. “Hey Sam.”
Sam’s expression is as flat as his voice when he speaks. “Daniel.”

Paper Rings (D.R.W/S.F.K)
Tumblr media
Summary: When Danny wants to propose to Sam, he turns to his brothers for help, wanting the evening to be perfect.
Pairings: Danny Wagner x Sam Kiszka
Genre: fluff, almost hurt/comfort, other than that no clue, way too long to be drabble but there’s no smut or angst or anything
Word Count: 6.5 k
Warnings: language? But what’s new with them, anxiety from worrying about how the proposal will go.
A/N: I would highly recommend reading Save a Horse and Ride a Cowboy as well as their previous fics, as this is a continuation of their stories within this Universe.
--------------------------------------------------------
4:38 pm
Those fucking bastards. Never on time a goddamn day in their lives. Danny sits in the living room of his and Sam’s apartment, his heart hammering, fingers twisting together in his lap and leg bouncing as the anxious knot in his stomach tightens as the minutes tick by. They were supposed to get here 38 fucking minutes ago. Where the fuck are they?
He checks his phone. Nothing. A minute later he checks again. Nothing. Fuck. After what feels like an eternity, a loud knock at his door yanks him from his frustrations, and he all but runs across the room to answer it. Jake and Josh stand at the center of the group, caught up in a heated, but hopefully lighthearted argument, with their partners sharing knowing exasperated looks over the twins’ heads.
Danny’s too frustrated to even care about possibly interrupting whatever argument they were having, cutting them off with a sharp, “You’re late.” He steps to the side as the group walks in, the twins talking over each other with various excuses as their boyfriends simply apologize and express that they tried to get them out of the house on time. “It’s whatever, I guess. At least you’re here now.” Danny sighs as he turns, walking away from them towards the living room and hoping they will follow. They do, and each pair takes a seat on the various chairs and couches occupying the space as Danny paces nervously across the room.
Austin is the first one to point out the nervous energy radiating from his friend, speaking over the noise of Jake and Josh trying to finish their argument from before. “Daniel, you alright? What’s goin’ on? And where’s Sam?” The twins promptly end their side argument as they also take in the state of their friend as well as the lack of their brother, causing their eyebrows to crease in unison.
“Yeah, why’d you ask us to come over? And why isn’t Sam here.” Josh questions.
Danny pauses his movements, coming to a stop in front of the other boys. His hands twist and stretch the hair tie around his wrist, needing to find some outlet for his anxiety. “He’s with Ronnie, she wouldn’t tell me what excuse she used to get him there, but I won’t question it since its working.”
It’s now Jake’s turn to question Danny. “Ok, cut to the chase. What did you need to talk to us about without Sam being present? You’re starting to make me worry.”
“I-” Danny starts, his nerves cutting him off and causing him to take a deep breath before continuing. “I need your guys’ help.”
Josh gasps dramatically, his hand flying to his heart in surprise. “I knew it!”
Danny feels like he’s been punched in the gut, his anxieties growing louder and louder in his head. If Josh figured it out so fast, Sammy could have too. Shit what if he knows and this was all for nothing.
Luckily for him, Josh continues, never missing the opportunity to make a shitty joke that often left the rest of them rolling their eyes. “You got him pregnant, didn’t you? What did I tell you two crazy kids about wrapping it before tapping it.” He shakes his head in mock disappointment before continuing, “Are you guys keeping it?” Josh is too focused on Danny (and too proud of his joke) to see Jake launching a pillow at him from the opposite end of the couch until it hits him hard on the side of his head.
“What the fuck man??” He yells as Austin wordlessly takes the pillow from him to prevent any retaliation.
“Could you be serious for one fucking second, Joshua? I don’t know about you, but I would love to hear what Danny has to say.”
Josh’s head drops slightly, now recognizing this may not be the time or place for his jokes depending on the conversation at hand. “You’re right, Jake. I’m sorry Danny.”
Danny removes his hand from where it had been placed on his temple in an attempt to slowly massage the stress and tension from his head. “It’s fine. Anyways, I need your help.” All four boys sit in tense silence as they wait for the other shoe to drop, each of them curious and worried about what had Danny so worked up like this.
“I’m going to propose to Sam.” The room is silent for a few seconds as they process what Danny had just said. Eventually, Josh shoots out of his seat, jumping up and down as he whoops in celebration.
“THAT’S FUCKING FANTASTIC OH MY GOD FINALLY!” He tackles the taller man in a massive hug, almost tipping the pair over as Danny stumbles to regain his balance before looking over to Jake to see him slowly standing from the couch with a wide grin on his face. When Josh finally let’s go of Danny, it’s Jake’s turn to embrace the other man, still enthusiastic but not enough to almost send them to the floor as Josh had.
“I’m so fucking happy for you, Danny. Couldn’t ask for a better man to take our annoying kid brother off our hands. I thought we were gonna be stuck with him forever.”
Danny lets out a deep breath as he laughs, beyond relieved at the reactions he recieved from the twins. After them, Austin and Sebastian take their turns congratulating him, each word of affirmation lifting a small weight off Danny’s shoulders until the anxiety he had previously felt is almost fully gone.
“So, what do you need our help with, hun?” Sebastian questions, voicing what the others had been thinking.
“Ok so, I want to propose to him at Bradley’s, in the spot we had our first kiss. But I want to be alone with him when I do it, but I don’t want him to suspect anything leading up to that.” Danny sighs, the frustrations formerly plaguing his mind resurfacing as he attempts to explain what little semblance of a “plan” he had. “I don’t know, that’s all I got. Do you guys have any ideas of how I could pull that off?”
A broad grin breaks out on Sebastian’s face, having already put together an entire evening for him and Sam in mere seconds in his head. “Oh, I got the perfect idea, kid.”
~
One week later
“Alright people, settle the fuck down y’all!” Sebastian shouts over the many loud side conversations occurring between all the drag performers as they wait for their monthly meeting to begin. They do as he asks, wrapping up their various conversations and turning their attention to Sebastian.
“Thank you. Imma keep this short and sweet and to the point, now. As y’all know, our usual club we perform at is undergoing renovations, so next month’s show is gonna be at Bradley’s Honkey Tonk.” A few excited whispers pass through the crowd, the performers knowing that they always got the most tips when they had shows there. “Our next, and last, order of business is the theme. Now the votes are in from y’all, and the theme with the most votes was Money, Money, Money. Now, I’ve already called that ABBA song but when y’all are ready to claim yours, put your name and song down in the group chat so I can start organizin’ the set.”
He looks at the small crowd, eyeing them to see if he could sense any unspoken queries. “If y’all aint got any questions, y’all’re free to leave.” Many chairs skid across the floor as they pull their phones out, already typing out the songs they wanted in the group chat and excitedly discussing group numbers and outfits with each other as each small group slowly made their way towards the exit.
Josh elbows Sam in the side in his haste to claim his song, frantically typing his message into the chat and hitting send with a satisfied grin, seeing that no one else had taken his song choice yet. He slips his phone back into his pocket before turning towards Sam. “Ready to go?”
His question snaps Sam out of his thoughts. “Oh- uh actually I wanted to talk to Sebastian about my song really quick. Don’t wait up, I’m meeting Danny down the street for lunch so I can just walk there.”
“Alright, have fun.” Josh says with a smile, turning and making his way towards the door with the rest of the crowd.
Sam approaches Sebastian, quietly waiting as he begins scribbling down who had taken what song so far in his notebook. He finishes, letting out a deep sigh before finally looking up. “Oh- hey, kid! Didn’t see ya there. What’s up?”
“I uh-” He starts, nerves getting the best of him as he looks down, his fingers picking at his cuticles as he gathers his courage. “I need help. Picking a song and… and with something else.”
A look of concern passes over Sebastian’s face, not used to seeing the usually confident Sam so sheepish. “Of course, I gotchu Sam. What’s up?”
“I- I want to propose to Danny. After the show, considering it’s where we had our first kiss. I just, I don’t really know how to do it. And I want to do a song that sort of hints at it, but not so much so that he knows it’s happening before I actually do it. And my brothers can’t know, I don’t want them to accidentally spoil the surprise.” He looks at Sebastian hopefully, feeling vulnerable and anxious as he asks this of him. “Do you think… do you think you can help me?”
Sebastian’s face splits open in a wide smile as he makes his way towards Sam, pulling him into a tight hug before he responds. “Of course, I got the perfect idea, kid.”
~
Three weeks later, Danny finds himself back at Bradley’s Honkey Tonk, seated next to Jake and Austin as they wait for the show to start. Jake’s voice across the bar table snaps him out of his anxious daze, and Danny looks over to see a concerned look painted across Jake’s features. “Hey man, you alright? You look a little pale.”
Danny takes a deep breath, having to remind himself to breathe as his nerves send him spiraling. He nods slightly before reaching for his glass of water and taking a large gulp of it. “Yeah, just nervous.”
He brings his hand to the pocket of his black jeans, checking to make sure the box holding Sam’s ring was still there for the 15th time that night. The knots in his stomach slightly loosen when he feels the outline of the box safe and snug within the fabric. As much as Danny was worrying about Sam’s reaction, he knew deep down he would love the ring; the second he had seen it, he knew it was so perfectly fitting for Sam. It had pansies engraved around the band, Sam’s favorite flower (and “coincidentally”, Danny’s star sign flower), the detailing dark black against the shine of the white gold.
“Everythin’ll work out just fine, Daniel. Your plan’s solid as it gets, and I’ll be damned if Sam says no to you." Austin brings his hand to Danny’s shoulder, offering him a small pat of encouragement before Jake joins in on relieving his worries.
“Exactly, we all know the plan, everything will work out. And I’ve known Sam for his entire life, I can’t think of one reason he would say no to you.” Danny offers a small smile at both boys, his nerves slowly dissipating from their words of encouragement. A distraction from any remaining nerves is provided when Sirena takes the small stage, mic in hand, and the crowd begins to quiet their side conversations in anticipation.
“How’re we feelin’ out there tonight?” She enthusiastically questions into the mic. She’s met with a loud roar of cheers and applause, as always joined by a few stray wolf whistles. She grins at the crowd’s obvious excitement, giving them a moment before continuing. “Fantastic! Just what I like to hear. I am your host tonight, Sirena de Lune, thank y’all for comin’ out tonight! And let’s make sure to give a big thank you to Bradley’s for hostin’ us tonight!”
The crowd erupts once more in appreciation of the owners allowing them to use their space for the night. “Now before we start our performances off for the night, I just have two things to say. First, consent is fucking sexy! If you don’t want extra attention or interaction from a performer, just throw your arms up into an ‘X’ and they’ll respect that. Consent also goes two ways, so make sure to not touch a performer without them initiatin’ that interaction. Lastly, tip your motherfuckin’ performers! Especially for tonight cause our theme is ‘Money, Money, Money’, so I better see some tips in the air for our amazing artists tonight! With that, I’ll introduce you to our first performer of the night, give it up for Elle Fernanda!”
The crowd nearly drowns out the upbeat intro of Material Girl with their applause as Josh sashays towards the stage. With his already unruly hair teased and donning bright pink lipstick, he looks like he walked straight out of the 80’s. Austin’s eyes linger for a moment on the short hem of his sequined, deep pink bodycon dress before they trail down his legs clad in fishnets, the stage lights catching on the small rhinestones scattered across the fabric, and down to his platform glittery heels, not once tripping over the various cords and steps in his journey towards the stage. His arms, neck, and ears are weighed down under as many pieces of flashy jewelry as he could fit, sending small beams of rainbow light around the room.
Jake snorts from his place beside him. “He looks like a fucking disco ball.” Both Danny and Austin smile at his comment, keeping their eyes on the performer as he teases the audience with the instrumental intro. He drops low down into a squat, grabbing more bedazzled bracelets from the stage floor before standing slowly, pushing his ass out towards the crowd. Finally, he turns around to face the audience as the first verse starts.
“Some boys kiss me,
Some boys hug me,
I think they’re ok.
If they don’t give me proper credit,
I just walk away.”
He makes his way off the stage, taking careful steps down so as not to trip in his heels. He motions along with the song, dropping low and bringing his hands together as if in prayer.
“They can beg and they can plead,
But they can’t see the light (that’s right).
‘Cause the boy with cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right.”
Working his way through the crowd slowly, he turns as he snatches tips from outreached hands, lip syncing in practiced perfection. He makes his way towards Austin, ignoring his tip and pulling him off his seat when he reaches him, placing his pink gloved hands on his hips as he still securely holds his fists full of bills.
“Some boys romance,
Some boys slow dance.”
Josh sways them both to the beat, once again teasing the crowd (and mostly Austin) by intentionally over-exaggerating his hip movements and pushing his ass out.
“That’s alright with me.
If they can’t raise my interest then I
Have to let them be.”
With that, Josh taps the tip of Austin’s nose with his finger, offering a wink before snatching his tip and turning to make his way back to the stage. Austin takes his seat again with a lovesick grin on his face as he watches his boyfriend weave through the crowd.
“Some boys try and some boys lie
But I don’t let them play.”
Josh reaches the stage, taking a large step onto it and turning to face the crowd as he raises his hands above his head.
“Only boys that save their pennies
Make my rainy day.”
He throws his tips in the air, and they flutter down around him as if they were droplets of rain. For the rest of the song, Josh continues spinning his way through the crowd, enthusiastically interacting with every patron he came upon whether they tipped him or not. As the song comes towards its end, he finds himself back on stage, gesturing dramatically as he uses his theater experience (and personal experience with Austin) to flash his biggest doe eyes flirtatiously at the crowd as a more “calm” part of the song plays.
“A material, a material, a material, a material world.”
His energetic energy is back as just quick as he had put it on to play up that part as he sways his body on stage, dropping down to a squat sideways from the crowd as the last few beats of the song play. He suddenly tips back, falling on his back dramatically and cocking one leg in the air as his arms sprawl around his head, perfectly timed with the last beat of the song.
The crowd erupts, their applause deafening with a few stray wolf whistles (most of which belonging to Jake and Austin) as Josh stands, blowing kisses to the crowd before exiting the stage, leaving the stagehands to quickly retrieve his fallen tips for him.
“Thank you, Elle, for that sensual performance.” Sirena says into the mic with a wink. She introduces the next few drag performers, one after the other, one of them being Shimmer performing to Rich Girl. Sparrow takes the stage after Shimmer’s tips have been collected, and all three boys seated at their table immediately know that it’s Sirena’s turn next. After a brief introduction, Sparrow jumps off stage as the intro to Sirena’s song starts.
Donning a different outfit than she had at the beginning of the show, Jake recognizes it instantly, not even needing to listen to the intro to know what performance she was about to give. Wearing simple converse, black overalls over a flowy light blue blouse, a light brown wavy wig with the front strands tied at the back of her head, and minimal makeup (for a drag queen, of course), she’s instantly recognizable as Donna from Mamma Mia!
Her face is set in serious frustration as Maryl Streep’s voice begins singing over the speakers.
“I work all night, I work all day
To pay the bills I have to pay.
Ain’t it sad?
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me,
That’s too bad.”
Her eyes lock on Jake as she steps off stage, slowly singing her way through the song as she weaves through the crowd towards him.
“In my dreams I have a plan:
If I got me a wealthy man,”
Her left hand comes up to his face as she slowly trails the back of it down his left cheek. She turns, her back leaning against him and keeping her hand on the side of his face, applying the slightest amount of pressure to get him to turn his head towards her.
“I wouldn’t have to work at all, I’d fool around and have a ball…”
Just as Jake’s lips are about to brush her own, she slips the tip from his hand and struts away from him, continuing her play of frustration to fully embody the show. She continues this energy throughout the performance, heavily interacting with the crowd as she collects handfuls upon handfuls of tips. When the song ends, the stage lights cut out on beat, sending her into darkness before they flash on again and an appreciative smile replaces the scowl she had donned for the performance. Sparrow hands her the mic again as the crowd applauds her, impressed at how accurate her act had been.
Once again, she introduces the next few performers; names that Jake, Danny, and Austin had grown familiar with from their partners’ involvements with the drag community. Faebelle and Sparrow give an animated duo rendition of Partners in Crime until, at last, she breaks the sad news of the show’s imminent end.
“Now I hate to remind y’all, but the night must come to an end at one point or another. Please give a warm welcome to our last performer of the night, Callie Bungah!” A familiar pop-ey intro begins and Jake instantly knows that Sebastian had helped Sam pick his song. He struts up onto the stage with a bounce in his step as he waits for his cue to sing.
Danny’s first though is: oh my god he looks so cute, when he takes in the image of Sam, wearing a wavy blond wig with the front strands dyed blue, a white turtleneck tank top, a long, flowy, baby blue skirt, and light pink go go boots decorated with red hearts.
“The moon is high
Like your friends were the night that we first met.”
He points to Jake and then Josh, watching his performance from the standing group of kings and queens in the corner, drawing a laugh from both.
“Went home and tried to stalk you on the internet.
Now I’ve read all of the books beside your bed.”
Sam keeps his eyes on Danny for most of the performance, yet intentionally avoids the area around him until a little over a minute is left in the song. The song calms down just as he reaches him, all instruments except the piano and guitar playing softly in the background.
Suddenly he’s reaching into the pocket of his skirt, pulling out a small piece of paper in the shape of a ring, carefully folded to have an origami heart. He holds it out towards him, lip syncing to the words as Danny extends his hand with a smile, allowing Sam to slip it onto his right ring finger.
“I like shiny things, but I’d marry you with paper rings.
Uh huh, that’s right.”
Despite his cool outwards appearance and the grin gracing his features, Danny’s mind is racing in worry. Shit. Does Sam know? Did one of the twins tell him? They would never… would they? His internal panic is silenced momentarily by the lovestruck look on Sam’s face, his hand coming up to hold the side of the other man’s face, who brings his own hand up to rest on it.
“You’re the one I want.
I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this.
Uh huh.
Darling, you’re the one I want.”
He offers one last small smile to the other man before turning to make his way back to the stage, grabbing the last of the tips from outstretched hands on his way. As the song begins to fade out, he walks towards the group of other performers, weaving through them and “hiding” behind a couple as he lip syncs with his head next to theirs, before he exits the room through the performers door as the song finally fades to silence.
The quiet is short lived as the crowd quickly shows the last performance a round of applause for the night. Sirena takes the stage once more, calling up each performer in order, for one last show of support to each artist. The crowd cheers equally as loud for each, and each time one of their partners is brought up, Jake, Danny, and Austin let out shrill wolf whistles and whoops.
“Once again, thank y’all for comin’ out to support us tonight. Big thank you to our tech crew and to Bradley for lettin’ us hijack his bar for the night! We’ll see y’all at the next show!”
Jake, Danny, and Austin patiently wait for their partners to finish taking pictures with the other patrons before they make their way towards them, the group of performers slowly dispersing back to their green room to get undressed for the night. By the time they reach the stage, there’s only a few patrons left in the building as groups file out the door and into the night. Josh is the first to spot them from his spot on the edge of the stage as Sebastian and Sam are caught up in a quiet conversation to the side. “So, what’d you guys think?”
Austin wraps his arms around the other man’s waist, lifting him up and spinning him a few times before gently placing him back on his feet next to him. He stoops to plant a kiss to his lips before answering. “Fuckin’ amazing, darlin’. You are drop dead gorgeous, if I do say so myself.”
Josh laughs, lightly placing his hand on Austin’s chest as he looks up at him. “Mmmm you flatter me. But thank you, love.”
Drawn to the show Austin and Josh had just put on, Sebastian and Sam make their way towards the group smiling. “You trying to turn Sammy boy into a Swiftie, Seb?” Jake says with a grin.
“Maybe, maybe. He put on a damn good show though, don’t ya think, Danny?” At his name, Danny’s trance is broken, his eyes having been glued on Sam since his performance began and he turns to look between Sebastian and Sam.
“Mhm, you all did fantastic. As usual of course. Love the pockets, baby.” Sam’s face lights up at the observation, immediately sticking his hands into the pockets of his skirt and slightly turning back and forth to flare it as he looked down happily.
“Thank you, Daniel. I love them too. All skirts should have pockets in my opinion.”
“I’ll second that!” Sebastian interjects with a laugh. “Alright, I don’t know bout y’all but I’m dyin’ do get outta this wig so imma go change. Y’all comin’?”
“You don’t have to ask me twice; these heels are killing me.” Josh says as he tentatively transfers his weight between each foot.
Sam grimaces in agreement. “Same here.”
“We’ll be here waitin’ for y’all when you’re done.” Austin says as the other three file back towards the green room. The remaining boys make their way towards a table, taking their seats as they wait for their boyfriends. Both Austin and Jake notice Danny’s anxiety creeping up on him, his leg bouncing wildly under the table as he fiddled with the paper ring still on his finger. “You alright, Daniel?”
His gaze shoots up to Austin, finding a slightly concerned look on his face. “Mhm, yeah, yeah I’m fine. Just nervous. Do you guys… do you guys think he knows? That I’m going to propose. With the song he picked and all it’s just… too much of a coincidence.”
Jake shakes his head, offering a small smile to Danny. “I know Sam, and I know Seb. Sam definitely didn’t even know where to start for a song choice and Sebastian gave him an idea. That’s like, one of his favorite songs. I swear I hear it at least once a week.” He finishes with a laugh.
Danny lets out a deep breath, slightly relieved from the information. “Ok, yeah, ok. He doesn’t know, it’s just a coincidence that will be something to laugh at later.”
Once again, Jake pats his shoulder in encouragement. “Exactly. Just breathe, don’t think about it too much. And I mean, it’s Sam we’re talking about. He’s so in love with you, I think he’d say yes even if you passed out with the ring in your fingers. Its honestly gross sometimes.” This brings a smile to Danny’s face, easing the tension in his mind and body as he realizes what Jake said was probably true. They sit in silence for the rest of the wait, content with listening to the music playing quietly over the speakers.
Just as planned with Sebastian and Josh, Sam is the first to come back out. Now wearing loose black jeans, comfortable slip ons, and a sweater he definitely stole from Danny, he makes his way towards the group and his boyfriend stands to meet him. Sam drops his bag on the floor near his feet, immediately following their after-performance routine of Sam melting into Danny’s arms as the taller man gently rubs his back. Austin and Jake share a knowing look that goes unseen by both Sam and Danny, and Jake is the first to speak, clearing his throat before standing.
“Seb just texted me that he needs help with some bags so, I’m gonna go do that.” Austin follows suit, the pair already beginning to make their way towards the performer’s door.
“And imma go make sure Josh can still walk, those heels were tall as hell and I don’t need him stumblin’ around and possibly hurting himself.” Austin jokes.
“Probably for the best, see you guys later.” Sam mumbles, his face tucked into Danny’s neck. They leave the room without another word, both men shooting Danny a smile and thumbs up behind Sam’s back before disappearing in search of their boyfriends. The pair stand in comfortable silence for a few minutes before a song both were very familiar with begins playing. Sam removes his face from Danny’s skin, looking up at him with a small smile.
Danny returns it, cocking an eyebrow at him in question. “Wanna dance? It is our song after all.”
“Lead the way, Daniel. Just nothing too crazy, my feet sill hurt.”
Danny laughs, beginning to lead Sam towards an empty spot between tables, intentionally finding the place where they first danced together to the song so long before. “Don’t worry, baby. I won’t sweep you off your feet this time.” Sam’s hands find their way to Danny’s back, beginning to slowly sway along to the song as his head comes to a rest on his shoulder. Danny brings his head down to rest against Sam’s as he closes his eyes and tries to breathe through his nerves.
“Any place is better,
Starting from zero, we got nothing to lose.
Maybe we’ll make something,
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove.”
They slowly dance through the song in silence, with Danny hoping the other man can’t feel his racing heartbeat from where their chests met.
“And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder.
And I, I, I had a feeling that I belonged.
I, I, I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone.
You got a fast car,
Is it fast enough, so you can fly away?
You still gotta make a decision,
Leave tonight, or live and die this way.”
The song comes to an end, and the pair momentarily break away from each other, just enough for Sam to look up at Danny while still being wrapped in his warm embrace. He looks around for a moment, taking in his surroundings before looking back up to see Danny watching him with so much love behind his eyes that it almost knocked the wind out of him. “Is this?” He starts. “Is this where we first danced to that song?”
Danny grins down at Sam, his heart soaring that he also remembered where exactly they first danced with each other. “Mhm, it is.”
“If I didn’t know any better, Wagner, I’d think you had something big planned.” Sam half-jokes.
“Maybe I do, Kiszka.” Sam cocks a questioning eyebrow at him, both men staring down the other to see who would speak first. Danny takes a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves and muster up the courage to start, knowing that once he said that first word, the rest would come to him as easy as breathing. His hands trail from Sam’s back, down his arms, and finally stop with the others hands in his own as he takes one final deep breath.
“Sam…” he starts. “I think, no, I know that I’ve been in love with you since the eighth grade. And I… I’m gonna keep loving you for as long as I’m on this Earth, and even after that too.”
Sam’s breath catches in his throat as tears begin to well in his eyes. Oh my god, is he about to-? This can’t be happening.
Danny continues, tears beginning to brim in his own eyes at the sight of Sam hanging onto his every word. “You are my best friend and… and I couldn’t ask for a better person to share the rest of my life with.” Danny reaches for his pocket, his shaking hands somehow grasping the small box as he lowers to one knee. With Sam’s hands now free, they come up to cover his mouth in surprise, looking down at his boyfriend in adoration. Danny clicks the box open, holding it out as he finishes the question he had been wanting to ask Sam since they first got together. “So, Samuel Kiszka, will you do me the greatest honor by marrying me?”
While Danny had thought he had prepared himself for any possible answer or reaction, what he’s met with is somehow not one of them as Sam bursts out in laughter, his tears making streaks down his face as he sinks to his knees in front of Danny. He barely notices the look of extreme confusion painted across Danny’s face through his tears and laughter as he reaches for his own pocket, pulling out a small box and opening it to reveal a simple, yet gorgeous ring; a silver band with a singular stripe of black inlay around its center, a triangular cut diamond set into the middle. As the gears turn in Danny’s head, he joins Sam as they kneel together laughing through their tears.
Sam’s the first one to catch his breath enough to speak, bringing his hand not holding the ring up to wipe the tears from his cheeks. “And I thought I was gonna be the only one proposing tonight.” He laughs out. “I thought I was being so sly with the hint of Paper Rings.”
“I fucking knew there was something behind that! Jake tried to tell me otherwise that it was just a coincidence and that Sebastian helped you pick your song.”
“I mean Jake’s not half-wrong; Sebastian did help me, he was in on this.”
Danny’s jaw drops. “No fucking way, he was in on my plan too. Sneaky bastard.” He says with no real malice in his tone. They gaze at each other as their laughs die out, both shaking their heads at their friends’ role in both of their plans. “So, you haven’t answered me.” Danny says with a smile. “Will you marry me, Sammy?”
“Of fucking course, is that even a question?” Is all he gets out before tackling Danny, toppling them both backwards onto the floor in a bone crushing embrace. They stay this way for a few moments, letting their tears fall and dry on their cheeks before they both get back onto their knees, each placing a ring on the other’s finger. Sam admires his ring with a grin before his gaze rests on his fiancé once more. “My favorite, pansies.”
“I know.” Danny says with a matching grin before gently grabbing Sam’s chin and bringing his lips to his own. The kiss is slow and passionate, filled with all the unsaid words of how much the other meant to them. They break apart eventually, their foreheads resting against one another with their eyes closed as they take the moment in.
Sam is the first to notice the song had once again changed to something he recognized. He leans back, gazing at Danny with all the love he could muster into once single look.
“But I must admit it,
That I would marry you in an instant.
Damn your wife,
I’d be your mistress just to have you around.”
“You know, I almost thought you were gonna propose to me that night, when you sang it to me in the car.”
Danny laughs at his words. “Baby, we had been dating for three months at that point. I know we’re in a gay relationship, but we aren’t that stereotypical.”
He receives a lighthearted swat to his shoulder as Sam tries, and fails, to hide his smile. “I know, I know! But I mean, we’ve known each other since sixth grade and had already talked about how we’d been in love with each other for years. Like I said I almost thought you were gonna propose.”
Danny takes Sam’s hands in his own once more. “Well, I hope I didn’t keep you waiting for too long.”
Sam offers him gentle squeeze. “I’d wait for you forever, Danny.” Their tender moment is broken by a loud yell, their heads whipping towards the source to see Josh standing with the performer’s door cracked open as he yelled back at the others waiting silently around the corner.
“I THINK HE FUCKING SAID YES!” They all begin filing out, grins wide across their faces as Danny and Sam get to their feet.
“Yeah, think we could gather that ourselves, Josh.” Jake says in a sarcastic voice as he shakes his head at his brother. He aims his question at Sam, next. “You said yes, right?”
“We both did.” Danny says with a grin as he holds his left hand up for the others to see. Everyone but Sebastian’s eyes go wide as their jaws drop.
“You both proposed?!” Josh exclaims, rushing towards the pair to tackle them in a tight hug.
“We did, and it turns out, Sebastian was in on both of our plans and didn’t say jack shit.” Josh, Jake, and Austin turn on Sebastian who only holds his hands up in defense.
“Listen, y’all both told me not to tell no one so I didn’t. Worked out mighty fine in the end anyways.” While Jake pouts at Sebastian for not telling him, Josh rounds on Sam instead.
“You told Sebastian but not Jake or I???”
“Sorry! Sorry, I didn’t want you guys to accidentally spoil it.”
“You can make it up by making me best man at the wedding.”
This brings Jake’s attention back to Sam and Danny, his eyebrows furrowing. “Who the fuck said you get to be best man?”
Austin speaks up, having gotten good at diffusing twin banter over the course of his and Josh’s relationship. “Alright boys, that’s enough. I’m sure Daniel and Sam have a lot to plan before they even think about that so let’s just get back to bein’ happy for them, alright?”  With their attention turned back to their engagement, each boy takes turn hugging Sam and Danny, congratulating them both. Jake is the last to hug Danny, squeezing him tight before patting his back.
“You’ve always been a brother to Josh and I, but now it’ll be legal. I’m so fucking happy for you, man.”
“Thank you, Jake.”
“I hate to break up this moment, but we better leave before they kick us out.” Sebastian half-jokes. The others voice their agreements, grabbing their bags as they slowly make their way towards the door.
“So, who’s taking whose last name?” Josh says as soon as the cool night air hits their skin. Danny and Sam exchange a look, not having had that conversation yet due to the interruption of the others.
“I don’t know, Daniel Kiszka has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it, Sammy?”
Sam intertwines his fingers with Danny’s, leaning into him as they walk. “Hmmmm, it does. But so does Samuel Wagner.”
“I guess y’all have another thing to figure out before you can even get to the question of best man.”

--------------------------------------------------------
When Jake had left for Sebastian’s apartment, he had no idea or intention of where the night would lead him. What had started out as an innocent monthly re-watch of Pirates of the Caribbean had quickly escalated into a full-blown make-out session not even halfway through On Stranger Tides, both boys having abandoned the movie on the screen in front of them, their attention completely captured by the other. They had moved from their original places on the couch, with Jake tucked against Sebastian under his arm, to Sebastian pinning the smaller man to the couch with his body. Sebastians’ lips trail down Jake’s neck, sucking and lightly biting marks into his skin as he palms him through his jeans. Jake struggles to form the thought he wants to, his mouth being even more unwilling to say it once he’s found it.
“As much as I’m- oh, baby- as much as I’m enjoying this, we should probably stop the- fuck- stop the movie.”
Sebastian removes his lips from Jake’s skin, looking down at the other man with a glint in his eyes that send a rush of energy throughout his body. He cocks a suggestive eyebrow at Jake. “Wanna pause it and take this to the bedroom?”
“Please.”
Sebastian pushes himself up, plucking the remote off the coffee table and turning the TV off before grabbing Jake’s wrist and pulling him up off the couch. His lips find Jake’s again as he walks backwards, the route to his room ingrained in his memory. Sebastian removes his mouth from Jakes only to turn his bedside lamp on and grab their lube from the drawer. Jake closes the door behind him and makes his way across the room towards the other man, wrapping his arms around his sides when he reaches him and softly kissing the back of his shoulder as he toys with the hem of Sebastian’s shirt. Sebastian pulls it over his head, turning towards Jake and catching his mouth with his own once more. He lightly pushes him to the edge of the bed, the back of Jake’s knees catching the mattress, causing him to pull away to steady himself.
“Can I?” Sebastian asks as he slightly draws up the edge of Jake’s shirt.
“Please.”
He pulls it off in one swift motion, discarding it on the floor next to his shirt. He gives Jake a gentle shove, forcing him back to sit on the bed. Sebastian kneels between his legs, marking up his chest and slowly moving downwards to the soft skin of his stomach. Jake’s head falls back, his hair loose and cascading down his back as he fists Sebastians locs.
“Mmm, oh baby, please.”
“’Please’?” Sebastian repeats back to him, a mischievous smirk playing across his lips. “Please what, mon beau?”
Jake’s brows furrow, face still tilted up to the ceiling, trying to think of what he’s “please”ing at, but coming up short. “Please-“ he whines.
Sebastian brings his hands up Jake’s body, one hand grasping Jake’s chin to hold his face an inch away from his own, eyes locked on the others. Sebastian’s eyes flit down to Jake’s parted lips, “Barely even touched you, and you’re already begging for me.”
Jake is too flustered to form a coherent thought, his mouth opening and closing in unsaid responses. “Please-“ it comes out as barely a whisper.
“Please what, baby? Use that pretty little mouth of yours to tell me, or I’ll find another use for it.”
His hips buck forward involuntarily at Sebastian’s words. “P- please. Please.”
Sebastian raises his eyebrows, hands coming back down his body and landing on the button of Jake’s jeans, slowly undoing it and drawing the zipper down. He brings his hand to his still-covered erection, squeezing it against Jakes thigh, drawing a sharp gasp from him. “Fuck- please.”
“I’ll give you what you want, mon beau. Just tell me.”
“Please- please fuck me-“
Sebastian grins up at him wolfishly, pleased to get more words out of Jake. “Lay down.”
Jake does as he’s told, his back hitting the mattress with his lower half still hanging off the side, his feet planted firmly on the ground. Sebastian’s fingers find the waistband of his pants and he pulls them down, his boxers coming with them.
“God you’re so fuckin’ gorgeous, mon beau.”
Jake groans, his hands fisting the sheets as his back arches off the bed, pushing into Sebastian’s touch as his hands snake up his thighs, grasping his hips. He kisses up his inner thigh, stopping at the crease of his hip. Jake whines, frustration apparent on his face.
“Please baby-“
Sebastian stands, leaning over Jake and pinning him to the bed by his wrists, his face an inch away from the other boys’. “Patience, mon beau. I told you I’d give ya what you want.”
Jake tries to bring his lips to Sebastians, only for him to pull up and away from the man below him, just barely out of reach. Jake pouts up at him, hoping to finally get him to touch him where he needs him the most. “Sebby, please-“
“I know what you’re tryna do.” He leans down, kissing a line from his jaw down to his neck. He works his way back up to Jakes ear, placing a soft kiss on the shell of it before whispering, “Lucky for you, mon beau, it’s working.”
Jake’s spirits are lifted by this as Sebastian makes his way down, his hands and mouth roaming the expanse of his chest first, then his stomach, and last, his thighs. He looks up at Jake through hooded eyes, taking in the sight of the position he had his boyfriend in.
“You’re so fuckin’ beautiful.” Sebastian pants out. Jake whines at his words, tearing his eyes away from the ceiling to look down at Sebastian, still kissing and biting marks into the skin of his thighs as his eyes meet Jake’s. “You’re stunnin’, baby. You deserve to be worshiped.”
“Oh god- baby, please-“ Jake sobs out as a tear runs down his cheek, his cock aching and deep red from neglect.
“Don’t you worry your pretty little head, mon beau. Imma take care of you.”
“Anything- do anything please just- please baby-“
With that he takes Jake in his hand, eliciting a sharp breath of relief, before he wraps his lips around Jake’s leaking head. Jake’s moans only grow in volume as he swirls his tongue around his tip, experimentally bobbing up and down ever so slightly.
Jake’s hands roughly grasp his hair as he babbles, his mind too overcome with pleasure to filter his words. “Fuck fuck fuck fuck- please- oh god- please baby- yes yes yes- please, oh fuck-“
Sebastian smiles around his cock, Jake’s praise spurring him on as he sinks down lower, until he can’t take him any farther. Jake’s head lurches back, neck and back arched as his eyes squeeze shut. Sebastian continues working his way up and down, holding the base of Jake’s dick in one hand as his other reaches for the bottle of lube he had set out when they entered the room.
With practiced perfection, he manages to uncap it and spread a liberal amount over his fingertips, bringing his hand back towards Jake to slowly press a digit into his entrance. Once fully in, he begins pumping his finger in and out, increasing his speed as he slightly curls his finger upwards.
“FUCK- more- please- more-“
Sebastian pulls himself off of Jake’s dick, continuing the rhythm he had set with his hand. “More?”
“More- please, more- I need you, baby-“
He adds another finger on his next thrust in, drawing a loud moan from Jake as his hand flies to Sebastians that was firmly kneading Jake’s thigh. His nails dig into Sebastians skin, neither men noticing or caring, too caught up in the heat of the moment. Sebastian scissors his fingers inside of Jake, curling once again in search of his prostate. A deep groan from Jake as his hips thrust upwards signals to Sebastian that he found it. He continues his assault, watching Jake unravel above him.
“Fuck baby- I’m so close- I’m so- fuck- close.”
“Cum for me, gorgeous.”
Jake lets out another groan, this time pained as his expression contorts with restraint. “No-“
Sebastian cocks an eyebrow at him. “No?”
“No-“ he whines, “With you- want- want to finish with you-“
This response leaves Sebastian speechless, his hand slowing before he pulls his fingers out, leaving Jake whining at the loss of pressure. He stands, leaning over Jake with one hand placed firmly on the mattress next to his head to hold him up, the other gripping his hip. He plants a few stray, gentle kisses against his jaw, once again bringing his mouth to Jake’s ear.
“Where, mon beau? Where do you want me to cum?”
“In me-“ Jake pants out. “Please- please in me.”
“Whatever you want, baby.” He says, before standing up and discarding his boxers and jeans, adding to the growing pile of clothes on the floor. “Move up the bed a little, love.”
Jake does so, doing the best he can despite his entire body feeling like electrified jello, Sebastians praise the only thing keeping him moving.
“Good job, mon beau. That’s it, there ya go.”
He positions himself between Jake’s legs, lining himself up as he spreads the lube still on his hand over his cock. “Ready, baby?”
Jake nods eagerly, “Please- please- yes- please-“
Sebastian eases himself in, sighing in pleasure as Jake’s mouth falls open, his eyes rolling back as his back arches.
“Yes yes yes yes yes- oh fuck-“
His hands come up to grip Sebastian’s biceps as he fully buries himself in him. He slowly starts moving in and out of him, his head falling forward to rest on Jake’s shoulder as he thrusts.
“You feel so fuckin’ good- shit-“ Jake’s hand roughly fists Sebastians locs, pulling hard as he nears his climax.
"Close- so close- dunno how much longer- I can- fuck- hold it-“
Sebastian attaches his lips to Jake’s neck, mumbling against his skin. “Cum for me, Jake. I’m right behind you.”
These words send him over the edge, painting his and Sebastians’ stomachs with his release as he gasps and moans.
The feeling of Jake’s climax against his skin and the flex of his muscles around his cock is enough to send Sebastian into his own orgasm, surges of pleasure rolling over him as he fills Jake up. They ride out their highs together, muscles spasming and breaths heaving as they come down from it. Both sharply inhale as Sebastian pulls his cock from Jake, their shared overstimulation sending intense waves through their bodies.
Sebastian collapses onto the bed next to Jake, wasting no time in connecting their bodies once more as he immediately pulls him towards him, the back of Jake’s body pressed flush against Sebastians’ front.
They lay like this for a while, steadily catching their breaths as Sebastian presses gentle kisses against Jake’s hair. Finally, Sebastian breaks the silence.
“Hey, mon beau. You still with me?”
Jake mumbles a response, too muddled for Sebastian to decipher his words.
“C’mon, love. Let’s go get cleaned up.”
He uses all the strength left in his body to sit up, pulling Jake with him as they struggle to stand and make their way to the bathroom. Sebastian patiently steers him there, helping him lean against the counter as he readies a bath for them. Once the tub is full, he guides Jake into the water, taking a seat behind him and pulling him against his chest.
Sebastian makes sure his hands are dry before carefully untangling the knots in Jake’s hair, consciously keeping it out of the water as neither of them liked going to sleep with damp hair. He gently cleans the both of them off, being sure to be careful around their still-sensitive areas. He finishes quickly, hoping that Jake was still awake enough to get back to his bed.
“All done, love. Can you stand for me?” he says quietly, nudging the other man to signal to start moving. Jake, already half-asleep, manages to stand with the steady hand of Sebastian. He helps him out of the tub, wrapping a towel around Jake before draining the water. He dries himself off, Jake’s head coming to a rest on his shoulder as he helps him dry off as well. Sebastian hangs their towels up before leading Jake back into the bedroom, sitting him on the edge of the bed as he gathers comfy clothes for the two of them.
He eases Jake into his pajamas and under the covers before doing the same for himself, turning the light off and pulling Jake towards him, his head resting on Sebastian’s chest as they entangle their limbs together.
“Love you.” Jake mumbles, already falling fast into sleep.
Sebastian smiles. “Love you more, mon beau.” He says, offering one final kiss to Jake’s forehead before drifting into sleep himself.

Chapter 20- And I Wish We All Could Stay
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: angst, hurt/comfort, fluff
Word Count: little over 3.2 k
Warnings: nightmare, guilt from killing, descriptions of cleaning/stitching up wounds (not graphic)
A/N: unfortunately, this chapter concludes the Into The Ether series. Thank you all for reading :') <3
--------------------------------------------------------
You’re ripped from sleep violently by a nightmare, remembering the last thing you saw before waking was Helena's eyes, unfocused as she stared past you. Shooting up in the dark, your hands fist the sheets below you as you feel tears stream down your face, your breaths quick and uneven as you grew dangerously near to hyperventilating.
The figure lying next to you in the bed sits up briskly, his hands finding your shoulders as he turns you towards him in the dim light. “You’re ok, you’re ok. It was just a bad dream.”
“Sam?” Your voice is barely above a whisper as you stare at him, only slightly confused at why he had replaced his brother.
“Yeah, sorry to disappoint.” He jokes lightly. “Jake’s at the helm, wanted me to take a break but didn’t want to leave you alone. I was gonna pass out on the floor but figured you wouldn’t mind if I crashed here instead. It’s more comfortable and let me keep a closer eye on you.”
You wrap your arms around his torso, practically throwing yourself at him. Sam’s arms come around your shoulders, pulling you into his lap as you make yourself comfortable in his safe embrace. “I’m not disappointed, Sammy. I’m glad you’re here. I- it may sound stupid but, I missed you.”
He places a gentle kiss to the top of your head, resting his cheek on it as he slowly rocks the two of you back and forth. “It’s not stupid. I missed you too. I can’t tell you how weird, how horrible it was to go from getting used to being around you at all times every single day for weeks to- to not even knowing if you were alive.”
You say nothing, remembering how horrible it had been when Helena first took Samuel from you, not knowing if he was alive in the room next to you or not. You hadn’t even been close then, and imagining how he must have felt for that week you were unconscious, those hours you were away from the others on that island brings tears back to your eyes.
Your sniffle draws his attention back to you, one of his hands moving to your jaw and tilting your face up at him as he wipes your tears away, his brows furrowing. “Why are you crying?” His voice is gentle, only full of concern and care as he questions you.
“I’m so sorry, Sam. I’m so so sorry.” You break down into tears, your voice cutting out as you sob.
He wraps his arm around you once more, resuming the gentle swaying motion as his hands slowly rub up and down on your back. His voice is barely above a whisper as he draws you closer to him.  “It’s ok. It’s not your fault. It’s ok. I’ve got you now.” He repeats these phrases like a mantra until your breaths begin to even out again, your tears slowly stopping their descent as he holds you. You say nothing as you breathe heavily, willing your body to completely calm down.
“Do you want to try to go back to sleep?” You shake your head against his chest, fearing that the next time you closed your eyes, you would see her again. “Ok.” He doesn’t try to argue or pry, instead keeping you pressed close to his front as he sits with you.
“Thank you, Sam. For staying with me.”
He gives you a gentle squeeze as he smiles down at you. “Of course. We’re trauma bonded now, there’s no getting rid of me at this point.”
You laugh at his words, feeling a slight weight lift from your shoulders as you find comfort in his embrace. “Good. Wasn’t planning on trying to get rid of you anyways.”
--------------------------------------------------------
You don’t realize you had drifted off into a light, dreamless sleep until Sam gently nudges you, still curled up against him in his arms. “We’re at The Garden, you ready to get up?”
You nod as his grip loosens, allowing you to stand and stretch your sore muscles as he does the same. He leads you from the room, making your way to the deck. It’s too quiet. Usually when they docked, you could clearly hear the shouts of many men as they set in on the task, but no shouts can be heard now, no shuffling of quick feet on the deck as the silence presses in on you.
On deck, those who can help the men that are badly injured do as much as they can, offering support to their crewmates or carrying them off the ship solemnly. You look up to the helm, seeing Jake standing at the edge as he sadly watches his crew make their way towards the town. His eyes catch on you and Sam, instantly abandoning his post as he makes his way towards you. “You ok?” His voice is quiet and full of sorrow, the weight of his crew’s fates heavy on him.
“As ok as I can be.”
He offers a small smile, taking your hand in his as he begins leading your small group off the ship. He glances back to Sam, casting a grateful smile towards him. “Thanks for looking after them for me.”
He pats your shoulder. “Anytime. I’m gonna go look for Danny, meet back at the house?” Jake nods before Sam quickly leaves you, speeding through the crowds carefully in search for his pirate. You make your way through the town with Jake, the streets oddly empty and silent as you hear groans of pain from Rosanna’s bar. Jake leads you up the path to their house, lighting a few lanterns in the main room as you close the door behind you.
“Hey, in a few hours, when Rosanna has gotten to all that need her immediate help, we should see her. Get your shoulder stitched up, my arm too.”
He shakes his head slightly. “I’ll be fine. We’ll go down to get you fixed up, but I won’t steal her attention and care from anyone who needs it more.”
You sigh, looking at him tiredly in defeat. “Fine. At least let me take care of your shoulder for you? Please. I might not be as good as her at it, but I can do my best.”
Knowing that if he tried to argue you would make him go see Rosanna, he gives in. “Alright, yeah.” He leaves for a moment, returning with a bottle of alcohol and a small wooden box, revealing a basic medical kit within as he opens the lid. Shrugging his shirt off, he sits on the edge of a low table next to you as you rifle through the box, pulling out a small pair of scissors, a curved needle, and some medical thread. You unwrap his bandages, soaking a clean piece of cloth in the alcohol.
“Ready?”
He takes a deep breath in, squaring his shoulders as he rests his hands on his knees. “Ready.”
You bring the cloth to his skin, trying to not feel too badly about it as he winces. Once you’ve cleaned it properly, you thread the needle silently. He nods at you after he takes a swig of the alcohol as you hesitate near the gash, giving you permission to continue. You finish carefully stitching the wound quicker than you thought you would, stepping back satisfied with your work. He glances down at it, his face slightly surprised.
“You did good, almost as good as Rosanna. Definitely better than I would have. You should give yourself more credit.”
Just as you’re about to respond, the front door opens, Josh walking in first as Sam and Danny trail in behind him. Their eyes land on you and Jake as you lightly dab his skin with the alcohol-soaked cloth, an extra precaution as you didn’t want it to get infected.
“Looks like we have another doctor in town. You got time for another?” Josh says with a small smile, his eyes tired as he makes his way over to you.
“Of course.” Jake stands as Josh takes over his previous seat, taking his shirt off to reveal a long gash across his chest diagonally, the skin around it angry and red as he hadn’t had the time to tend to it yet. He begins to explain when he sees the shock on your face.
“I lost sight of one of the men that cornered me and he- he snuck up behind me, attacked from my left. I didn’t hear him until it was too late. I was able to jump back at the last second, but I wasn’t fast enough.”
You move your supplies to the edges of the table. “You better lay down.” He does as you say, his back landing square against the wood as his feet stay planted firmly on the floor. Jake moves to his other side across from you, offering his brother a hand as you prepare a new piece of cloth with alcohol, cleaning the needle off as well.
Despite his pride, Josh takes his hand and is immediately grateful for it as you bring the cloth to his skin, gripping his brother’s hand as he grunts in pain. “Oh fuck- that’s a bitch-”
You flash him an apologetic look as you continue. “Sorry.”
“Fuck- don’t be sorry, it’s alright. Thank you.”
You repeat your motions as you begin to stitch his skin, finishing quickly as you had done with Jake. You reach for the bottle of alcohol to finish cleaning him up, only to find it in a different spot than the place you had last put it. Looking over to Sam and Danny, you see Sam gently tending to Danny, cleaning a gash across his nose that slightly trailed down his cheek.
You direct your words to them as you finish with Josh.  “I don’t know if I can do much for you guys, I doubt you’ll need it though, those cuts don’t look too deep.”
Danny smiles in the direction of your voice, his eyes closed as Sam made the final dabs to his skin. “Should be fine but thank you, Polaris.”
Josh sits up, slightly wincing as he repositions. “Want me to take a look at your arm?” He offers. You remember your own injury, having paid no mind to it as your focus was on the others.
“Josh is the best out of us at all the medical shit. If we can’t get to Rosanna, Josh is the next best option.” Jake explains as you unwrap your arm.
In his focus to clean the needle once more and prepare everything he needed, Josh mumbles his response. “Thank you for that Jake. Great to know I’m your second choice.”
Jake laughs lightly, slapping his brother’s shoulder before standing to put his shirt back on. You hold your arm out to Josh, and he gently takes it, turning your arm slowly in his hand to assess the damage. “Not too bad, I should be able to get you fixed up in no time.”
He brings an alcohol-soaked cloth to your arm, looking up to see your reaction. When you don’t wince at the sting, he smiles, his eyebrows raised as he shakes his head. “You’re one tough motherfucker, I’ll tell you that.”
He finishes cleaning the cut, quickly stitching your forearm up without so much of a flinch from you. After cutting the thread, he lightly dabs at his finished work as you had done, a final touch to aid the healing process.
Your group says nothing as Josh grabs a new shirt, the rest of you cleaning up from your makeshift “hospital”. With nothing to focus on again, a weight settles over the room, each mans tired eyes full of regret as they are left to wonder what state their crews were in.
Jake breaks the silence. “I want to show you guys something.” The group’s eyebrows raise in unison, the same question of what he had to show them on each of their minds. “C’mon.” Is all he says before making his way to the door, knowing the rest of you will follow him.
You find a place at his side, intertwining your fingers as you walk next to him. “Are you-”
He cuts you off, a small smile playing across his features. “Shhh, it’s a surprise.” He leads your group through town, past Rosanna’s tavern, where you were grateful to hear less sounds of pain from within the walls. The other three men are left in a constant state of curiosity as Jake leads you through the cavern wall, making your way across the field of wildflowers just as the sun begins to peak over the horizon.
“Seriously where the fuck are you taking us?” Josh shouts at his twin from his place at the back of the group as you make your way through the forest.
“It’s a surprise.”
While you couldn’t see Josh, you knew he was rolling his eyes at his brother’s intentional withholding of knowledge. As you break the tree line, you hear the three men behind you gasp at the sight before them: Jake’s hidden swimming hole, the morning sun catching the calm water as the sound of birds chirping in the distance settles into the clearing.
“How long have you known about this?” Sam says, his jaw dropped in wonder.
“Probably found it when I was 10 or so.”
Josh swats Jake on the arm lightly as he enters the clearing. “And you’re just now showing us?”
Jake raises his hands in defense, unable to help the smile forming on his face. “Listen, I needed some place to myself to escape you three.”
Sam scoffs as Josh snorts out a laugh, Danny shaking his head with a smile as you watch them. Without some threat looming over your head, you finally, truly felt at home with the men around you. A true family, playful jests and all.
Sam and Josh’s annoyance at their brother for keeping this from them doesn’t last long though, as the two begin wrestling their boots off, making their way towards the water. They strip to their undergarments as they splash into the shallows.
“Last one in buys the first five rounds of drinks!” Sam shouts, already waist deep in the pool. Danny, Jake, and you exchange a look before following suit, quickly stripping to your undergarments as you race each other into the water. Having the longest legs, Danny is the first into the water. Just as Jake is about to meet the edge, he “stumbles” slightly, allowing you to quickly pass him. He joins you in the water with a smile, his brothers beginning to shout their excitement at Jake having to pay for their drinks.
You wrap your arms around Jake’s neck as his body meets yours. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
He shrugs, a secretive smile playing across his lips before he kisses you. “Guess we’ll never know.”
Water drenches yours and Jake’s heads, ruining your moment as you look over to see Josh looking at you with a shit eating grin. “C’mon lovebirds, we’re playing Chicken. Join us.”
“I think I’ll sit this one out.” Jake motions to his shoulder. “I’ll be the referee.” The rest of you quickly pair up, Josh hopping onto Danny’s shoulders as you get onto Sam’s. The two men below you wade through the water towards each other, bringing you and Josh face to face as you begin to wrestle, both conscious to not accidentally catch the others healing wounds.
After a few long minutes, you yell in victory as Josh topples backwards into the water, pulling Danny with him. Before you know it, Sam is leaning backwards, tipping you off his shoulders to join the others as you let out a scream in your surprise.
Your group spends the morning this way, playing games with each other in the water until you all feel yourselves begin to tire out. As the others make their way to the shore for a quick break, Jake grabs your hand, motioning his head to the waterfall. “You a good climber?” You notice the stone piled on either side of the small waterfall, finding an easily climbable path up the rock to a large flat stone set right beside the top of it.
You answer Jake with a smile, already wading through the water towards it. You climb up first with Jake close behind you, plopping your body onto the ground as you reach the top, your back resting against the cool stone. Jake collapses next to you with a laugh, catching his breath as he smiles over at you.
You sit up, Jake doing the same soon after as he scoots his body closer to you, moving his legs around you as he pulls you towards his front. Turning your head towards him, you allow yourself to take in his features in all their glory, no longer ashamed of being caught staring. The morning light catches the water droplets on his skin, his dark brown eyes turning a shade of warm honey under the sun’s rays. You raise your hand to brush away a wet strand of hair clinging to his cheek, your hand remaining against his skin as you gaze at him.
Without breaking eye contact, he brings his hand to yours, turning his head slightly to kiss your palm. Before you can think twice, you speak the only thought on your mind. “I love you.” Your voice is quiet, your anxieties beginning to swirl around your mind at if he would say it back.
He smiles, his eyes glancing down to your lips quickly before darting back up. “I love you too.”
You pull his face towards you, your lips colliding in a slow, yet passionate kiss. When you finally pull away, your forehead comes to rest on his, smiling as you take in the moment.
Your heads whip towards the others as you hear shouting below, both you and Jake breathing a sigh of relief with a laugh when you realize the others had gotten back into the water, beginning a lively game of Marco, Polo. Jake wraps his arms around you, pulling you further into him as he begins to kiss a path across your shoulder. You lean your head back to rest against him, listening to the others, your family, having fun in the water below you.
“What do we do now?” Your question is quiet as you bring your head back up. Now that the fighting was over and Helena was no longer tracking you down, you didn’t know what to do with the peace your life was slowly gaining. There was no Black Smoke to go back to, no town other than The Garden to call your home. You didn’t know what your new life with this family you had gained would look like.
Jake’s lips leave your skin, bringing his head up beside yours to answer. “Now?” He places a gentle kiss to the side of your cheek. “Now we live.”
“How?” Your voice breaks as tears come to your eyes. “I don’t- I don’t know what that looks like anymore.” You turn your face towards him as a tear runs down your cheek, your breath catching as you’re met with his soft gaze, full of love and care.
“I can show you, if you’ll let me. Do you trust me?”
“With my life.”

Chapter 19- You've Been On Your Way
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: ANGST, hurt/comfort, fluff
Word Count: little over 1.2 k
Warnings: guilt, talk of killing
--------------------------------------------------------
You say nothing the entire walk back to the shore, getting into the tender and quickly placing yourself next to Jake. Your silence continues as you finally reach the deck, and Sam casts a worried look to Jake as they observe how distant your eyes were.
“Sammy, take the helm. Get us out of here.” Is all Jake says before beginning to lead you to his quarters. He sets your sword and dagger on his table, his own sword joining it soon after. He says nothing as he unbuckles the sheath from your waist, pulling a chair out and steering you into it slowly. He leaves you momentarily, returning with a wet cloth before he gently helps you out of your shirt, the stained fabric beginning to stick to your skin.
Kneeling in front of you, he sets in on cleaning your arm up first, his worries only growing as you don’t flinch at the sting. Knowing Rosanna would be able to stitch up the gash better than he could, he wraps your forearm in a clean strip of cloth, keeping the binding tight enough to slow the bleeding, but not so tight it could cause any discomfort.
He picks the cloth up again and begins to gently wipe the small cuts on your cheeks from the branches, not needing to do much as your tears had washed away most of the blood. Hesitating for a moment, he brings it down to your chest, lightly scrubbing Helenas blood from your skin as you stare off into space, still stuck in your dazed state.
He leaves you once more, returning with a loose black shirt. Standing in front of you, he helps you into it. The feeling of being wrapped in one of his belongings, his scent drifting up to you from the fabric, calms you, slowly bringing you back down to the earth. He kneels in front of you again, gently cupping your face in one hand as his other finds one of your own. He tilts your face towards him, fully bringing you back to the moment as he looks up at you.
He looks… scared. Is he scared of me? Because I- I killed Helena? The thought brings tears to your eyes, and before you know it, you’re sobbing, leaning forward in your anguish.
“Hey, hey, hey, it’s ok. You’re ok, I’ve got you.” His voice is calm, thick with care and worry at your state of distress, erasing your previous thought from your mind as he holds you.
You manage to bring your eyes to meet his, tears welling at his lash line as he tries to figure out what to do to ease your pain.
“Was that- was that the first time you’ve ever-” He stops himself, not wanting to upset you more. You only nod as he gazes up at you empathetically.
“First one is always the hardest, no matter who it is.”  He brushes the tears from your cheeks as you will them to stop falling.
“I don’t even- I don’t even know why I feel like this-” you sob out, resting your head on Jake’s shoulder as his hands come to your back, rubbing slow circles into it. “She has caused me more pain than happiness- she- she killed my father, she killed your father- we were never really siblings, we never- never had anything like you and your brothers do- it was kill or be killed and yet- and yet I don’t know how I can live with myself now-”
“Querido-” Jake’s voice is soft and broken as you look back up to him. His hands move to each side of your face, his thumbs brushing across your skin. “You took another person’s life. It doesn’t matter how horrible they were, or if it was to prevent your own death, the weight- the weight of it is still the same. Whatever you’re feeling right now is alright, it’s more than understandable.” A tear runs down his cheek as he looks at you, his face full of understanding and care. “You don’t have to get through this alone. Sam, Danny, Josh, and- and I all know what this feels like. We won’t leave your side.”
You gaze at the man across from you, not knowing how to respond to his immense amount of kindness and… love? for you. The word floats around your mind as you stare at him. Love? Love. I- I love him. “Thank you, Jake.” You wipe the last of your tears away, sitting back up as you take a deep breath.
“You ok?”
“I’m- I’ll be ok. Again, thank you. For taking care of me. Mentally and…” you gesture to your arm, the dull throb of pain slowly returning as your mind calmed.
He offers you a small smile. “Of course. Always.” Standing, he winces slightly as his shirt catches his shoulder and you’re quick to join him on your feet.
“Your turn now.”
His brows furrow. “What?”
“Your turn, let me see that shoulder.”
“It’s really not too bad, I’ll be fine.” You say nothing, deadpanning at him until he gives in, pulling his shirt off with a sigh of defeat. The cut wasn’t too deep, but you knew he would let Rosanna tend to those more injured than he was before even mentioning he needed her help too. You make your way over to the small bucket of clean water where he had wet the piece of cloth to clean you up, dunking another in before you make your way back to him.
He winces slightly when you bring it to his skin as you try to get off the blood that had already begun to dry, apology overtaking your features. You finish soon enough, doing a once over of the rest of him to see if he had acquired any other injuries. You’re relieved to find none as you set the cloth down, reaching for the cloth strips that were left over from him wrapping up your arm.
It’s an awkward spot to bind, but not wanting his wound to get infected or further irritated, you make it work. He looks at you when you finish, taking your jaw in his hand as he draws you into a gentle kiss. His arms wrap around your shoulders when you separate, pulling you towards his body as your arms come around his torso. “Thank you.”
“Of course. Always.”
Pulling away from you, he finds another loose shirt before slowly putting it on, not wanting the motion to ruin the makeshift bandage. He takes your hand after, beginning to lead you towards his bed. He kicks his boots off as you shake your head, moving you to a sit on the edge as he begins to help you out of your own boots. “You don’t have to stay, Sam needs you.”
He joins you on his bed, pulling you along with him as he lays down. “You need me more right now. Samuel will be fine.”
You don’t bother trying to argue as he draws you towards his body, his arms wrapping you in his secure embrace.  “Thank you, Jake.” You whisper as you feel yourself quickly drift towards sleep.
He places a light kiss to your forehead, his nose bumping it as he settles against you. “Always.”

Chapter 18- Waited All Your Life
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: ANGST, hurt/comfort
Word Count: little over 1.6 k
Warnings: another battle scene, descriptions of killing during battle
--------------------------------------------------------
Branches whip at the skin of your face and arms, a few especially sharp ones leaving small scrapes and cuts as you run through the trees. The darkness of the night would have been a hinderance on any other island, but you could run this path with your eyes closed if you had to after years of training within these woods. You knew each exposed root and large rock scattered across the path like the back of your hand, leaping over each as they claw at your ankles.
You come to a stop in a small clearing, the light of the moon illuminating the space as you catch your breath, making as little sound as you could to listen for any sign of Helena. You whip around when you hear a branch snap behind you, seeing nothing as you squint into the darkness of the forest.
“I can’t believe your pirate let you come out here all alone, after what happened the last time we saw each other.” Her voice floats across the clearing, and you briskly turn towards the direction you had heard it from, still seeing nothing between the trees. You say nothing, keeping your focus on listening to your surroundings, praying she would eventually falter and reveal her hiding spot to you.
“You know after I kill you, I’m heading right for him. I can’t wait to see the look on his face when I tell him of your death. I’ll make sure the last thought on his mind is of you, dying by my blade. And this time, I’ll make sure you’re dead.”
You let out an enraged scream in the direction of her voice, baring your sword at it, furious at her taunts. You hear her laugh cruelly from her place within the trees, satisfied that she got what she wanted from her words.
“Are you going to hide in there forever or fucking face me?” you shout at the trees. You hear her footsteps behind you, ducking low as her blade slices through the air where your head had been just seconds before. You draw your dagger in your left hand as she continues past you, slashing it into the air as it makes contact with her outer thigh.
She steadies herself 10 feet from you, bringing her hand down to her leg, anger flashing across her features as she brings it back up to see it covered with blood. “You’ll fucking pay for that.” She charges at you, your swords clashing as she closes the distance between you. You make a sweep for her leg. She dodges it, only slightly stumbling as she brings her sword up once again, arcing it through the air towards you. You block the blow as she invades your space, trying to use her strength to wear you down as you lean into each other, your blades crossed.
“You see, this was always your problem, Helen.”
“Don’t fucking call me that!”
You shove her backwards, your swords separating as she paces around you, looking for another opportunity to attack you. “You were always too direct, it’s easy to anticipate your attack, you just make it too obvious.”
She charges at you once more, her blade sweeping low in hopes of catching your knee. You block it, her blade glancing off yours and catching the back of your forearm as you turn, leaving a clean gash on your skin. You push the pain to the back of your mind, the cut only slightly stinging as you wait for her attack.
“Father may have taught you a passable offense, but you always struggled with defense, didn’t you?” She says nothing as she circles you. “Always too eager to attack first.”
She ignores your words in her rage, stabbing at you as she lunges forward. “You’re one to talk. You’re not as good as you may think, father always did have a soft spot for you.”
You’re not as good as you may think. Her words easily get to you, taking over your thoughts as you stumble.
She catches you, holding you in a head lock as she spits her words into your ear. “You just always had to be the perfect one, you could do no wrong in his eyes.”
Don’t listen to her. Her pride is her weakness, she’s too distracted with trying to hurt you to focus on defending herself. Use it. You elbow her in the gut hard, allowing you to escape her grip as it loosens slightly.
“I should have killed him sooner,” She pants out, catching her breath from the blow. “He was too soft for this life. And I should have killed you when I had the chance. God, you’re just like him.”
“Don’t you DARE speak of him that way.” In your anger, you gain some hidden strength, making the first move to slash at her. It catches the back of her sword hand, leaving a large gash as her grip loosens from the pain. You take the opportunity when you see it, striking her blade as hard as you can. It flies from her grip, landing halfway across the clearing as she watches the moonlight catch on its blade. Before she can reach for the dagger at her hip, you plunge your blade straight into her chest. She gasps, grabbing your biceps to steady herself as you hold her up.
“Now you know how father felt.” Your voice is thick with hatred, unwavering despite the tears beginning to spill from your eyes. She leans against you, your proximity causing you to feel her blood seeping through the front of your shirt as she looks up at you fearfully. You pull your blade from her, pushing her backwards as she struggles to stay standing. Her hands come to her chest as blood begins gushing from the wound, staining her shirt as she grasps at her skin.
She tries to take a step towards you, collapsing onto the ground as her legs give out. You walk towards her slowly as she gasps for air, looking up at you in defeat. Her tears catch the light of the moon as you look down at her, your own tears making tracks down your cheeks from your anger. “Are you happy now?” she sputters out.
“What?”
“Are you happy now?” she repeats quietly. “What you had left of a family dies with me. You’ll have no one now.”
You crouch beside her, stabbing your sword into the soft earth beside her head. Your voice is quiet when you find your words, anger dripping through them as you look into her eyes. “I have more of a family now than I ever had with you, Helen. And I have you to thank for that.”
She says nothing, rolling her eyes weakly as her breaths slow. “If you hadn’t destroyed my town or tortured Samuel and I, I would never have had the reason to track you down. You caused your own death, that will be your legacy.”
Rage overtakes her features momentarily before her face goes blank, her eyes unfocused and staring into the night sky just to the side of your head. You wait a moment before reaching down to check her pulse. You find none as the silence of the clearing overwhelms you.
You drop to the ground a few feet from her, your dagger falling beside you as you watch her blood begin to pool underneath her. Hours or minutes pass, you can’t tell as you sit beside her, your eyes locked on her expressionless face as tears continuously trail down your cheeks.
Hearing the snap of a branch underfoot from the trees, you shoot to your feet, managing to grab your dagger as you wait for them to emerge into the clearing, not knowing if they were friend or foe. Jake breaks the tree line first, rushing at you as you drop your blade at the familiar face. His hands are on your biceps in no time, his eyes raking over you fearfully as he sees the blood on your shirt.
“Are you ok? Where are you hurt?” he rushes out, beginning to feel around your torso for the cause of the blood.
“It’s not mine.”
“What?”
“It’s not my blood, Jake.” you sob out.
His eyes leave you, noticing Helenas body on the ground for the first time. He pulls you into a tight hug, a hand gripping the back of your head as tears spill from his eyes at his relief. “Thank the gods.”
Sam emerges from the trees next, making his way towards you as his own relief floods his face. Jake lets you go, allowing Sam to embrace you as he gently holds you. You pull away, looking between the men to see they had only collected mild injuries on the battlefield, a cut across Sam’s cheek, another across Jake’s shoulder.
“What happened? Where are the others?”
Jake takes your hand, picking up your sword and dagger from where they remained on the ground before he begins to lead you towards the forest, taking the same path they had used to get there. “We won, none of her crew remains. The others went back to the ships, we need to get our injured back to Rosanna as soon as we can.”
“Rosanna? Why Rosanna?” Confusion overtakes you, still in a daze from the outcome of your fight with Helena.
“Her father was a doctor, taught her everything he knew but wouldn’t let her practice. She’s sort of our resident “doctor”. Fixes us up when it’s bad enough for us to not be able to handle.” Sam explains quietly as he follows you and Jake.
“We’re going back to The Garden?”
Jake squeezes your hand gently as he speeds through the forest, not wanting to rush you but still understanding you needed to leave as soon as you could. “We’re going back to The Garden. It’s over.”

Chapter 17- It's Time for Us to Pray
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: fluff (gentle morning Jake), angst
Word Count: little over 1.9 k
Warnings: battle scene, descriptions of killing during battle
--------------------------------------------------------
The soft light of the morning filtering into the room through the large window by Jake’s bed wakes you. Sometime in the night, the two of you had completely switched positions as you now lay with his back against you, your arm across his chest as he holds it. You tighten your hold, pulling his body even closer towards you as you nuzzle your face into the hair at the back of his head.
He mumbles in his sleep, turning in your embrace to tuck himself in to your front, his face finding a home in the crook of your neck as he settles back in. You’re content the way you were, letting yourself relax fully against his body as you try to drift back to sleep, not wanting to wake him just yet. Just as you’re about to fall asleep again, his voice pulls you right back out of it, mumbled into your skin as he wakes up. “G’morning, querido.”
You smile to yourself before responding. “Good morning, baby.” He says nothing more as he sighs against your skin, relaxing into you as he begins to let himself fall asleep.
You tap his shoulder lightly, drawing a sleepy “Hm?” from him.
“As much as I want to stay here with you, we should probably go give Sam a break at the helm.”
He scowls against your skin. “He’s fine. He wanted to take it anyway.”
You run your fingers through his hair lightly, gently detangling the waves. “He needs some rest before tonight, Jake.”
Jake looks up at you with a small frown, knowing you were right but not wanting to leave his place beside you. “You’re right… five more minutes?”
Smiling, you place a gentle kiss to his forehead. “While I want to say yes, we both know that if we stay here for much longer, we’ll both fall asleep again.”
He sighs as he sits up, bending back down to kiss you slowly. He finally pulls his lips away from yours, beginning to move the blanket off your bodies. “I hate that you’re right.”
You say nothing as you climb out of his bed, beginning to dress as he does the same. “Hey,” Your voice captures his attention, looking at you as he bends to pull a boot on. “What did you call me? Querido?”
He smiles at you, slightly shy as he works to get his other boot on.  “It’s Spanish. Means dear or darling. A bit formal version of it but, my father used it so much for my mother when I was growing up that it practically became a second name for her.”
“You speak Spanish?”
“Yeah, and French. Joshua, Samuel, and Daniel do too. There are many Spanish and French pirates that sail these waters, so our father wanted us to be prepared. Give us a fighting chance at being able to talk through any quarrels before turning to fighting.”
You follow him to the door as he unlocks it. “An interesting, and smart approach. My father thought talking through issues at sea was pointless, so we spent our training sessions with a sword instead of books. Maybe that’s why Helena is… the way that she is.”
He offers you a small look of apology before he begins up the stairs towards Sam, half asleep at the helm as he steers. In his focus to stay awake, he doesn’t notice you or Jake approaching him until he feels Jake’s hand on his shoulder, gently shaking him from his daze.
“Where are we, Samuel?” He snaps his attention to Jake before pointing at the map beside him at a spot in the middle of the sea, a little over halfway to the island. “Thanks, Sammy. Go get some rest, I can take over again.”
“Thanks.” Sam offers a small, tired smile before he leaves, making his way to his quarters to try and get some sleep before night came.
Jake surveys his map, glancing up to the sails as he does the mental math of how long the rest of your journey would take. “Wind’s on our side, should get there right after sundown.”
“Do you have a plan?”
He answers with a nod before explaining.  “We drop anchors just offshore and send half our men out on tenders. The rest of them stay here to guard the ship. We took out about two thirds of her crew when we found you and Samuel, so she must be running on reserves. Once on land, we scour the island from two directions, my crew and I from one side of the island, and Joshua and his crew from the other. Hopefully we find them at the same time and have the element of surprise to help us.”
You begin to sweep through your memories of the island to find anything that could pose an unaccounted-for risk or change in his plan. You nod slowly when you find none, his plan solid and as fool-proof as it could be.
--------------------------------------------------------
Just as Jake had said, you reach the island right after night falls upon the ship. He silently signals to his men to stop the ship, not wanting his voice to carry across the water if any of Helenas crew were close by as the ships anchors drop into the water below.
“Before we go, you’ll need these.”  You turn towards him, seeing a dagger and sword in each hand as he holds them out to you. Taking each from him, you test the weight of the sword, looking up at him with a small smile.
“Is this a good one?”
He smiles back at you, remembering his twins’ words and repeating them with a playful tone. “Yes, it’s a fucking good one.” He watches fondly as you strap the blade to your hip. “That was my mother’s sword.”
Your attention snaps back to him, beginning to unbuckle the sheath to give it back to him as you shake your head.  “I can’t take this, Jake.”
“I want you to take it, please. It’s yours now.”
You sigh, knowing any attempt at arguing would be pointless, his mind was made up. “Thank you. I promise I’ll take care of it.”
“I know you will.” Is all he says before making his way towards the last tender as Sam stands next to it on the deck, waiting for you.
Your anxieties bubble in the pit of your stomach with each stroke of the oars as the small boat steadily makes its way to the shore, only slightly calmed when Jake places a light hand on your thigh in the dark. You take lead of the group when you reach the shore, knowing the lay of the land far better than any of the pirates with you, Sam and Jake included.
Your body goes into autopilot as you lead the group through the forests of the island, your gut leading you towards where you knew a small hut used to sit, where your family would stay when they visited the island throughout your childhood. You reach the tree line, seeing a few small fires scattered across a freshly cleared field surrounding a run-down building, a singular lantern flickering from within its walls. Helena’s men sit around each fire, unaware of their company as they talk amongst themselves.
In your mind’s eye, you see the field in the bright daylight, wildflowers covering the ground as far as you could see. She ruined it. She destroyed the one thing our mother loved most about this place. Despite your efforts to contain your emotions, a tear trails down your cheek as you observe the field, your body obscured from the view of the field as you stand behind a tree. Jake appears by your side silently, offering a quiet, “Are you ok?” when he sees you hastily brush the tear away.
You say nothing, nodding as you bring your focus back to the field. You see the glint of a blade on the other side of the clearing, your eyes focusing on Joshua as he stands at the ready hidden within the trees. Jake sees him too, nodding to you and bringing a hand up to beckon his men forward as you all begin silently towards Helena’s men, crouched low to the ground as you walk in hopes of covering as much ground as you could while they were still unaware of your presence. Across the field, you see Joshua do the same, Danny at his side with their crew behind them as they begin towards the nearest fire.
Halfway across the field, one of Helena’s men glances over, spotting you. His eyes go wide as he shouts at his crewmates.
“Shit.” Is all you hear from beside you before Jake stands fully, sprinting towards the enemy as his own crew follows close behind. You break into a run, finding Jake’s side once more as you rush into battle, your sword drawn. You barely need to use it though, as Jake begins quickly cutting down any man that so much as glanced in your direction. You hear a twig snap behind you, and you turn with your sword raised to block the blow of a pirate behind you.
Having expected you to not notice or block his attack, he stumbles, regaining his balance as he makes his way towards you. Before you can even try to slash at him, Sam appears out of nowhere, catching the man off guard as he sneaks up behind him, slitting his throat quickly and offering you one look before he disappears from your sight again.
You hear a door slam open and look towards the sound to see Helena standing in front of the hut, her sword drawn as anger paints her features. She looks through the scene unfolding before her, her gaze settling on you and twisting her face into an expression of pure rage that you were still alive. With your focus on Helena, you don’t notice the pirate charging towards you until Jake rushes in, cutting her down just before she reaches you. He follows your gaze, understanding what had captured your attention as he too sees Helena. She grins at you madly before sprinting towards the tree line across the field from you.
You make a move to follow her before Jake catches your wrist. “Don’t! Can’t you see, that’s exactly what she wants!”
You try to shake his grip off. “I know! This is the only chance; I must take it Jake.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“JAKE!” Joshua’s scream rips his attention away from you, his eyes going wide with fear as he sees his brother being backed against the side of the hut by three pirates, only a small, curved dagger in his grip as his sword lays on the ground 15 feet away from him.
Jake’s gaze flits back to you, his internal battle visible on his face.
“Go help Josh, I can take care of Helena.” He says nothing, his fear of losing either of you keeping him frozen in his spot. “Jake, do you trust me?” Your breath catches in your throat as you ask.
Tears come to his eyes as he looks at you.  “With my life.” Is all he says quietly before drawing you into a quick kiss.
You look at him one last time before sprinting towards the path you knew Helena had taken, hearing only the clash of metal behind you as Jake joins his brother. You spare a glance back as you reach the edge of the field, seeing the three men who had cornered Josh lying unmoving on the ground as he finds his sword, rushing back into the fight with Jake by his side.
Knowing Jake was safe, you turn your focus back to Helena as you run straight into the forest.

Chapter 16- Share Our Skin
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: smut, fluff
Word Count: little under 1 k
Warnings: unprotected penetrative sex (reader receiving)
--------------------------------------------------------
Jake leads you across the ship towards his quarters, and Sam flashes you a knowing smirk from his place at the helm as he sees you disappear below the quarterdeck. When you reach his room, he closes the door lightly, sliding its lock into place before turning back to you. He teases you with his proximity, brushing his lips against yours but refusing to make contact until he finally closes the distance between you.
He takes his time, kissing you gently as he slowly trails his lips down your jaw and towards your neck. As much as you liked the side of him you had seen the night prior, his urgency, his pure need for you, you adored this new slower pace. He was in no rush to get you into his bed, his lips slowly kissing along your neck as you sighed underneath him, his hands splayed across your lower back to pull you into him.
His breath fans across your skin, sending an anticipatory shiver through your body as your hands began to tangle in his hair. Only then does he begin backing you towards his bed, moving blindly as his lips find yours once more. His hands find the edge of your shirt, brushing the backs of his fingers against your skin lightly. You break the kiss to pull your shirt over your head, and he follows suit, shrugging his jacket off before pulling his own shirt off.
He turns you, now backpedaling towards his bed until he meets it, taking a seat on its edge. His lips trail soft kisses across your chest and stomach, his fingers lightly brushing your burn before placing a gentle kiss to the scarred skin. He looks up at you through his lashes, his hands beginning to tease the hem of your pants. His hands trail downwards across your thighs, taking one of your knees to bring your leg up to pull your boot off as you hold his shoulders for balance. He repeats the motions with your other leg before kicking his own boots off.
You straddle him, gently pushing him back until you’re pinning him to the bed with your body. This time, your mouth trails down his neck, his chest, his stomach. The feeling of his skin underneath your lips, in between your teeth as you pepper in gentle bites, is even better than you could have ever imagined. When you reach his belt, you slowly undo it and kneel in front of him as you draw the rest of his clothes down.
Standing, you strip the rest of your clothes as well as his eyes roam over your body. He backs up, turning on his bed as you rejoin him, once again straddling him. You grind into him, reveling in the groan he lets out at the friction on his dick between your bodies. You repeat the motion a few more times, each grind downwards being rewarded with a breathy moan as his cock slowly leaks onto his stomach.
Figuring you had teased him enough, you take him in your hand, lining his tip up with your entrance before fully sinking down onto him. His back arches off the bed as his hands grip your hips, letting out a groan that was surely loud enough for any man unfortunate enough to be directly above or below you to hear. You raise your body off his before sinking back down, moaning at the feeling of him within you.
You set a steady pace, not as fast as it had been the night before, but not slow enough to keep both of you wanting more. He manages to sit up, his forehead resting against your own as his breathy pants fan across your lips. Your hands find his shoulders, gently squeezing his muscles underneath his soft skin as you ride him.
After a few minutes, you feel his thighs flexing beneath you as his breaths become more erratic, signaling to you that he was close. You reach your high before him as he grinds up into you on your next downwards motion, your body alight with pleasure as you attempt to continue your motions through it. The feeling of you clenching around him sends him off the edge, his hands gripping your hips hard enough to leave bruises as he stutters out a moan. You cease your motions as he comes down, both breathing heavily into the air between you as your bodies relax.
He looks up at you before capturing your lips with his own, his hands trailing up and down your back slowly. You break the kiss, raising yourself off him as he hisses at the slight overstimulation. You feel his cum begin to leak out of you, beginning to trail down your legs as a few drops land on his thigh. He grabs a piece of soft fabric from the piles covering his bed, cleaning you off first before quickly tending to himself.
Jake throws it to the floor before reaching behind him to pull the topmost blanket down under himself, tucking himself under it as he pulls you with him. He draws your back into his front, his arm snaking around your hip as he splays his hand across your stomach, the center of his palm directly above your burn.
He nuzzles his face into your hair, sighing deeply as you both get comfortable. Just as you’re about to fall asleep, his voice draws your attention back to him. “I care for you deeply, Polaris. Thank you for trusting me.” His voice is quiet as he mumbles into your hair.
You smile, bringing your hand down to his to offer a gentle squeeze. “Of course. I care for you deeply too, Jake. Thank you for- for everything.”
He places one final kiss to the back of your head before you both calmly drift into a restful slumber.

Chapter 15- Where've You Been? We Won't Lead You Astray
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader Genre: fluff Word Count: little over 1.5 k Warnings: talk of death/what happens when you die
--------------------------------------------------------
Jake wakes you gently, placing soft kisses to the back of your shoulder as you crack your eyes open, the dark sky slowly lightening as sunrise draws nearer. His voice is low and gravelly from sleep when he speaks. “As much as I would love to stay here with you until the end of time, we really do need to get going.”
You look back to smile at him, responding with a laugh. “I have a feeling Joshua will have our heads if we’re late.”
Jake laughs before drawing the blanket off your body as he begins to reach for both your undergarments. He hands yours to you, already working to get his on. You both dress in comfortable silence and manage to get your boots on yourself this time. You look over to see him staring at you, a small smile on his lips in his silent admiration.
“What?” you say with a small smile.
He shrugs before beginning to fold the blankets, tucking them back into the basket as he stands. “Nothing. Just looking. Am I allowed to do that now?”
“Of course you are, Jake.” You take his hand as he begins leading you back through the woods, back towards The Garden. The field of wildflowers is even more gorgeous in the light of the new day, with bright blues, pinks, and yellows scattered across the fields as you walk through it. With the dim light of the rising sun to guide your way, you trip over fewer rocky outcroppings as you walk through the trail set into the cavern, the light reaching even its deepest, darkest parts.
Jake drops the basket on the doorstep of Rosanna’s pub quickly before you both begin to make your way towards the dock where men hastily rushed about as they readied the ships for sail. You follow him up the gangway to The Ether, Sam appearing as your feet hit the wood of the deck.
“Thank the gods you two finally got here, Joshua just left, I swear he looked like he was about to track you down if you hadn’t shown up in the next five minutes.” He glances at your necks as he raises an eyebrow, smiling at the bruises already forming on your skin. “You guys weren’t at the house last night.”
“Nope.” Is all Jake says before making his way to the helm with you in tow. A crewmember drags the gangway onto the ship hastily as you find a spot next to Jake already staring down at a map, committing the course to memory.
“How long until we get there?”
Jake points to the center of a sea on his map. “This is where we are, uncharted, remember?” He moves his finger across the parchment to the island you had told them about. “This is where we need to be. Should take us about two days, give or take. We hope to catch them under the darkness of the night.”
You nod, beginning to feel grateful that you had the next couple days to prepare to face Helena again, not knowing how or where to even start with confronting her.
Jake notices the faraway look growing in your eyes and nudges you with his shoulder gently. “Hey, still with me?”
You bring your attention back to him, trying your best to smile at the man as your worries drift through your mind. “Yep, never better.”
He sees right through your act. “You don’t have to face her alone. We’ll be there this time. We- I won’t let her hurt you again.”
You bring your lips to his, kissing him lightly. “I know, Jake. Thank you.”
Before he can respond, the ship moves beneath you, signaling that it was time to set sail, your destination set to track Helena down once and for all. “Hey, you might want to go below deck. We’re about to pass under the falls.”
“I think I’ll stay here with you this time.”
He looks over at you with a surprised smile. “Hold your breath.” Is all he manages to say before water comes crashing down on the bow of the ship. You watch the falls cascade over the sails, drumming against the deck as it grows nearer and nearer to your place at the helm. Just before you reach it you close your eyes, holding your breath as it rains down on you. You emerge on the other side soon enough, laughing when you look over to Jake only to see his hair plastered against his forehead, hanging in front of his eyes. He shakes his head like a dog, sending droplets flying at you as he laughs.
Despite the looming threat of Helena ahead, you push it to the back of your mind, allowing yourself to enjoy these moments you had with Jake, not knowing when or if you would be able to experience them again.
--------------------------------------------------------
As night falls, you find yourself at the bow of the ship, perched on the small space just above the figurehead. The silence is calming, hearing only the wind in the sails and the water lapping at the hull. Even the sea is calm, the moonlight reflecting off its waters as The Ether cuts through it silently. You close your eyes, breathing in the salty air as the breeze carries it across the deck.
You hear a creak as someone sits next to you, not even needing to open your eyes to know that it was Jake. You lean your head on his shoulder, feeling his dip down to rest against yours as he takes your hand. “You get Sam to take the helm?”
“Yeah, he was bored, and I wanted to come check on you. You ok?”
You nod against him. “Mhm. It’s nice up here, calm, relaxing.”
He laughs lightly. “I wouldn’t have thought it would be relaxing to perch dangerously close to the edge of the bow of a ship.”
Shrugging, you say nothing. You sit in silence together until a question pops into your head. “Do you ever think about dying, Jake?” Your voice is quiet.
You feel his head lift from yours, knowing he was looking at you in concerned confusion. Opening your eyes, you lift your head to meet his gaze and see that you had guessed correctly. He stares at you with his eyebrows furrowed, worry apparent on his features as he thinks. “Yeah. Kind of hard not to, with the life we lead.”
“What do you think happens? When you die?”
He looks down at the wood below him, tracing its lines with his free hand. “I don’t know. There are so many stories; of reincarnation, of reaching a better place, of nothing. Joshua always says that one time around is enough for him but, I’m not sure what to believe. All I can hope for is that one way or another, I’ll be able to be at peace with the people I love.” He looks at you, his expression unreadable. “What about you? What do you think happens?”
“I don’t know either. When I was unconscious for that week, I- I saw my father. Just him, as he had been in life, smiling at me. He looked happy to see me, but there was an underlying sadness behind his eyes. I don’t know if that was a glimpse of some other side or just a hallucination.” You take a deep breath, letting the air leave through your nose as you look out at the water. “I guess we’ll all find out, in the end. Sooner or later, it’s something we can’t escape.”
“I hope that it ends up being later. I quite like living, personally.” You laugh lightly before he continues.
“I hope to have a long life, a good one. With my brothers… with you.”
You look over at him in surprise, seeing a nervous expression on his face. “With me?” Your voice is barely above a whisper.
He breaks your eye contact, once again looking back down at the wood below him. “Yeah… if you want that. I know we’ve only known each other for such a small amount of time, I don’t know, maybe it’s stupid.”
You bring your hand up to his chin, tilting his head upwards before your lips find his in a gentle kiss. You pull away, looking at him sincerely. “It’s not stupid. I couldn’t picture a better way to spend the rest of my life than with you and the others. I’ve already become so close with Sam and Danny, in different ways under different circumstances of course, and it looks like Joshua is starting to come around. And you… you make me feel something I don’t think I’ve ever felt before.”
He says nothing, looking at you tearfully as you bear your heart to him. “I feel like I have a family again, Jake. A home. With you and your brothers. I haven’t had that in so long.”
Jake cups the side of your jaw, bringing you towards him into another soft kiss. He breaks it, resting his forehead against yours.  “You’ll always have a home with us, Polaris.”

Chapter 14- Please Stay
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: smut, fluff (aftercare)
Word Count: little over 1.5 k
Warnings: unprotected penetrative sex (reader receiving)
--------------------------------------------------------
Jake leads you to the edge of the water, setting his basket down and letting go of your hand as he began to unpack it. He pulls out a blanket first, spreading it on the ground before pulling another out, setting it folded on the corner. A loaf of bread follows, as well as an apple that was the same kind as one of the apples you had picked at the market weeks prior. He takes a seat, looking up at you and patting the space next to him as an invitation.
“Sit down, I won’t bite.” You sit next to him as he pulls a knife out of the basket, making quick work of cutting the apple into slices. He holds one out to you as you get comfortable, and you take it gratefully as your stomach rumbles. It’s just as sweet as the one Danny had offered you, and as soon as you finish the first slice, Jake holds out another for you.
He pops a slice into his mouth as you eat yours, alternating between offering a slice to you and taking one for himself until it’s finished. You set in on the bread next, finishing it quickly in comfortable silence as you sit together. “Now,” Jake starts. “Care for a night swim?”
He begins undressing starting with his boots before he stands, shedding his shirt as you stare, trying not to gasp at the sight. Your mind is once again filled with the thoughts you had had when you saw his shirt skintight and drenched from the falls; of kissing trails along his stomach, sinking your teeth in to the especially soft parts. Soon enough he’s left standing in nothing but his undergarments, looking down at you with a smile.
“Well, are you joining me or are you going to keep staring?” A vivid blush settles across your cheeks, and you’re thankful for the low lighting keeping it mostly hidden from him as you set in on undressing yourself. You join him in a stand when you finish, shivering in the night air as you begin to regret shedding your layers. He takes your hand, pulling you towards the water. “C’mon, the water’s warm.”
You resist the urge to run straight into it the second it hits your feet; Jake having been true to his word as warmth floods back into your body. He leads you to the center, the water barely reaching your shoulders at its deepest part. You turn in the water, making a 360 as you stare in amazement at the beauty of your surroundings. “How did you find this place?”
Jake shrugs. “Wandered a lot as a kid. Not much to do around town when our parents would leave on their travels. I would come here to escape babysitting Daniel and Samuel.”
“Aren’t you worried about someone finding it? Finding you here away from the protection of The Garden?”
“No, this island is deserted, other than us of course. There’s a reason my father chose this place to build a home in. The waters around this island are quite treacherous, it’s uncharted because of that. It takes immense skill and knowledge few have to survive the waters surrounding it.”
You look at him with a shy smile. “Will you teach me some day? How to get through them. In case we’re ever separated again, I can find my way back to you.”
“Of course. Although, I hope to gods we never get separated ever again. We won’t, if I have any say in it.”
You take a step towards him with a smile, entering his space as you move your hands to his sides. His eyes flit down to your lips as he brings a hand to your jaw, his other finding a home on your lower back as he draws you into his body.
“Do you trust me?” His voice is quiet and low with an unmistakable tone you had not yet heard from him.
Your breath catches in your throat as you steal a glimpse at his lips. “With my life.” Is all you manage to breathe out before he leans forward, catching your lips with his own.
Your kiss is soft and slow, the taste of the apple you shared still sweet on his tongue. Steadily, it begins to heat up as you pull his body towards your own, needing to be impossibly closer to the man as his hand firmly presses you into his front. You finally break apart, much to his dismay as he looks at you, his pupils blown so wide that his eyes looked almost black under the light of the moon.
“Care to continue this on land?” You offer.
He wastes no time in beginning to make his way back to the shore, wading through the water with your hand in his as he leads you back to the blanket. He collapses onto it when he reaches it, pulling you with him as he guides you to his lap. You straddle him, reconnecting your lips as his hands come up to your hips.
His hands trail up and down your sides, his fingers splaying over the edges of your back as yours tangle in his hair, pulling down on it to force his head back, deepening your desperate kiss. His thumb catches your healing wound, drawing a gasp from you as a shiver courses through your body at the slight pain as well as the feeling of his fingers lightly drifting across your skin. He pulls away from you, eyes wide with fear and apology. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be.” You place a gentle kiss to his lips. “You didn’t hurt me.” You bring your lips to the corner of his mouth, once again lightly placing a kiss to his skin before you make your way down his jaw, stopping at his neck as he sighs beneath you.
A light bite to his skin causes him to buck his hips into yours as he moans quietly. You continue biting and sucking bruises into his skin as you feel him hardening beneath you, his hands pressing down on your hips to increase the friction between your bodies. His fingers dip slightly beneath the fabric at your hips, toying with the hem. “Can I?” His voice is barely above a whisper.
You pause your attack on his neck, looking down at him as you brush the hair from his face. “Only if yours come off too.”
He nods before flipping you onto your back, making quick work of freeing the remaining undergarments from your body. His come next as he finds a place between your legs, bringing his lips to the skin of your neck as he repeats what you had done to him. After a few moments, he brings his head back up to look at you, his eyes locking with yours. “Do you trust me?”
“With my life.”
He raises an eyebrow as the tip of his dick brushes against your entrance, and you respond with a nod before he completely sinks into you. You both moan at the contact, your foreheads coming to rest on one another as he bottoms out, pausing to allow both of you to adjust. His arms hold his body up on each side of your head, his fingers intertwining with yours as he begins to pull out of you.
He thrusts back in, a groan falling from his lips as he sets his pace. Your lips find his once more as you angle your hips up, allowing him to sink deeper into you on his next thrust in. You moan into each other’s mouths as he moves, devouring each sound the other made and reveling in the taste of him on your lips.
You sigh as his lips find the skin of your neck once more as he places open mouthed kisses to its expanse. You continue this way together for minutes or hours, you can’t tell as you lose grasp of time, each thrust sending you closer towards your high.
“I’m close.” Jake mumbles into your skin, his teeth sinking into your flesh as he tries to hold back, not wanting to end too quickly if you were not at the same point he was.
“So am I.” Your words allow him to let go, coming undone with a loud groan only a few thrusts after. The feeling of his release inside you sends you over the edge as well, your moan cutting through the otherwise quiet of the night. As you both near overstimulation, he pulls out of you, collapsing onto his side beside you as you both heavily breathe.
He turns away from you only to grab the other blanket that sat forgotten by the basket, spreading it over your bodies as he pulls you towards him. Your head finds a spot on his bicep as you nuzzle your face into his neck, your legs tangling with his as you get comfortable. His hand begins trailing your side, the backs of his fingertips lightly grazing your skin as you tuck yourself into his body. You close your eyes, offering one last kiss to his neck as you allow yourself to drift into sleep.

Chapter 13- If This is What You're Looking For
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: fluff, barely angst
Word Count: little over 1.4 k
Warnings: brief recalling of past trauma/family death
--------------------------------------------------------
Your group surrounds the table as Joshua pulls one of his maps to the center of it, pointing to a small island as he explains. “This is where we found you, where her hideout was. I’ve been scouring these maps, trying to remember anything about its surrounding islands to try and get an idea of where she could have gone.”
You shake your head, brows furrowing as you point to the island where her hideout had been. “That’s where we were?”
Joshua nods in response.
“Our father used to take us there when we were children, we had a small hut there. He taught us how to fight in the fields and forests of that island, away from the prying eyes of our town. She can’t-” You cut yourself off. “She can’t be that stupid.”
The four men look at you quizzically. Sam is the first to ask the question floating around their minds. “What do you mean?”
You look over to him. “If she chose an island that was important to us as children, who’s to say she wouldn’t do the same again.” Pointing to another island about 4 leagues from her former base, you continue. “We came here as well, as children. My mother loved that island, it’s filled with nothing but fields of wildflowers and lush forests. We went there at least once every fortnight before- before she died. It’s not much, but it’s a start.”
“I’d say that’s better than a start, that’s the best lead I’ve gotten in the last week.” Joshua looks at you with a smile before he looks on to his brothers. “We leave at sunrise. I’ll collect our men from town, we’ll need both ships to pull this off. We got lucky last time.”
Jake stops him as he rushes to the door, placing a firm hand on his shoulder as he turns his twin around. “No, we’ll go tell our men. You need sleep, brother.”
Joshua sighs, his eyes already visibly drooping at the mention of rest, having not slept much with all his planning. “Fine. If you need me, I’ll be here, this bed’s much more comfortable than the one back at the house.”
You, Danny, Sam, and Jake begin to make your way towards the door as Joshua puts out the various candles and lanterns scattered around his room. You’re the last one to the door after Jake, and you turn back towards him as he extinguishes the last candle. “Rest easy, Joshua.”
He smiles at you. “I will, now that I know you and Samuel are alright.” With that, you close the door behind you.
You meet Jake in the hallway as he waits for you, once again taking your hand as you leave the ship. “Samuel and Daniel already headed off to town, they’re covering half while we cover the rest.”
You’re content in keeping Jake company as he rallies his forces, going from building to building reciting the same message to each man that they met. Within 15 minutes, your work is finished as Jake walks away from the last pub. He stops by your side with a small smile. “Alright, that’s the last of them. We should be set, come sunrise. Also, Rosanna says hello.”
He pauses, not knowing what to suggest the two of you do for the next few hours. “Are you tired?”
“Gods no.” You laugh. “I just slept for a week straight, I think I’ll be alright for the next few days.”
“You were healing. I haven’t- I haven’t seen many come back from a wound like that, even with proper medical care readily available.”
You take his hand, offering it a gentle squeeze. “I have you to thank for that.”
He shakes his head with a small smile. “Ah, I barely did anything.”
“Give yourself more credit, Jake.” You say, bumping his shoulder with your own. He looks at you for a moment, and you can see a thought quickly formulating in his head.
“I have an idea, wait here.” Is all he says before he jogs back to the pub, disappearing into it briskly.
You do as he says and moments later he returns, a small basket in his hand. “What’s that?”
He offers a secretive smile to you. “You’ll see. Do you trust me?”
Your answer is quiet and sincere. “With my life.”
With that, he takes your hand once more as he begins leading you towards the end of the street, breaking off to the side onto a trail you could barely even call a “path”. You follow him, saying nothing as you enjoy the calm that would inevitably soon be followed by another storm.
Confusion paints your features as he leads you further into the cavern, seemingly headed straight for the wall. As you grow closer, you begin to see the outline of a small cutout in the rock, barely large enough for a man to pass through it. He continues, beginning to walk through the rock along a small trail cut deep into the side of the cavern.
You follow him blindly in the dark for minutes, the only sign that he was still there being his hand guiding you along in front of you as you walk. You finally emerge on the other side, gasping as you look up at the night sky, ablaze with stars to light the rest of your journey. He pauses as you gaze up in wonder, watching you with a fond smile.
He joins you at your side, looking up to the heavens and extending his arm to point out one of the stars, one that burned brighter than the rest of them. “See that one?”
“Mhm.”
“That’s the North Star.” He looks back at you softly. “Polaris.”
You rip your eyes from the star, bringing your gaze to Jake with a smile. “You use it to navigate on the sea.”
“Yes.” He smiles at you before beginning his path once more, hand in yours as you walk through a field of wildflowers. “Do you know much about them? The stars, Polaris specifically? Their stories?”
“Ah, that is the one thing my father failed to teach me. He thought it was more important to know where you were going than where you had been.”
“Well, the Greeks believed that the constellation Polaris belonged to, Ursa Minor, had been a great man once; a king, an exceptional hunter, the son of a god. His name was Arcas. His father was Zeus, king of the gods, and his mother, Callisto, a princess; or a nymph in some retellings.”
You listen to him tell the story with a content smile. “Now when Hera, the queen of the gods and Zeus’ wife, found out her husband had once again procreated with a mortal woman, she turned Callisto into a bear in her jealous rage. Arcas grew up unaware, raised by his grandfather. One day, he was out hunting and came across a great bear, Callisto. Not knowing it was his mother, he drew his bow, nocking an arrow as he aimed with expert precision. Before he released it, Zeus appeared to him and told him it was his mother, stopping him from killing her. Zeus turned the two of them into Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, to be immortalized for eternity in the heavens.”
Coming upon a forest, Jake makes no move to slow down, leading you through it easily as the light from the sky vanishes above the thick foliage.  He looks over to you, his cheeks burning when he sees you staring right back at him. “Sorry- that was more of an explanation than you probably wanted.”
“No no, I liked it. What an incredible way to be remembered, amongst the stars until the end of time.”
“The Greeks thought that was the key to immortality; being remembered. Your body may die but your spirit lives on for eons, through stories. Like my father, like yours.”
You feel tears come to your eyes at his sentiment, changing the subject quickly to avoid them from spilling onto your cheeks. “Where are you taking me?” You laugh.
Jake shakes his head with a smile. “Do you trust me?”
“With my life.” You walk in silence next to him for the rest of your small hike, Jake catching you whenever you tripped over a root or vine in the dark. Eventually, there’s a break in the trees, the sky once again lighting your surroundings as you gasp at what lay before you; a small waterfall, cascading into a watering hole, the moon reflecting off the calm water in the darkness of the night.
Jake grins at your awestruck features, taking in the beauty surrounding you as he begins walking towards the water. “We’re here.”

Chapter 12- Swim to Shore
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader
Genre: angst, fluff? (little snippet of domestic Jake)
Word Count: little over 1.4 k
Warnings: brief talk of healing wounds and shared traumatic experience
--------------------------------------------------------
You drift in and out of consciousness, not knowing if the faces that appeared to you were a dream or a reality, or perhaps glimpses of the other side. You see Rosanna, your father, Sam, Danny, and Jake. You think you surely must be dead when you catch a glimpse of Joshua’s face, caring and focused as he dabs at your forehead with a damp cloth.
You finally grasp full consciousness, cracking your eyes open to see Danny sitting by your bed as he reads. You feel a form behind you, heat radiating from his body as he lay curled against your back. Sam. You realize there is a hand in your own and look down to see Jake on the floor, slumped against your bedframe as he slept soundly. Danny looks over to you, closing his book as he realizes you had woken up.
“How long have I been asleep?” Your voice is quiet and raspy from disuse.
“A week.” His voice is quiet as to not wake the other two men as he smiles at you sadly. “Was beginning to think you might not wake up.”
“Where are we?”
“The Kiszka house in The Garden.”
You look back to Jake on the floor, and Danny follows your gaze with a smile. “These two haven’t left your side since we found you. I told Samuel that you might not want to wake up with him stealing half the bed, but he just told me to go fuck myself. I didn’t know you two had gotten that close.”
“Did he- did he tell you what happened?”
Danny nods solemnly. “He did. Thank you for saving his life, Polaris. Knowing him, he would have neglected his wounds and died from infection. I’m eternally in your debt.”
“And did he tell you-” You cut yourself off, not wanting to share Sam’s secret if he hadn’t admitted it himself.
A small grin breaks over his face. “That he loved me? Yeah, he did.”
You look down at your clothes, noticing you had been changed into a different shirt and pants, clean ones free of any blood, sweat, and grime. Your skin too had been scrubbed of any remnants of your time in the cell, causing confusion to pass over your face. “Who- who dressed me and cleaned me up?”
“Samuel. Jacob and I offered to help as he’s still recovering himself, but he wouldn’t hear a word of it. Said it would be ‘a violation of your privacy’.”
You offer a small smile at the thought. “We shared a cell with each other for weeks, I don’t think there’s a single thing either of us could do that would violate the others privacy.”
Danny smiles at your words. “That’s exactly what he said.”
The smile slowly leaves your face as you process what Danny had said about Sam still recovering. “How is he? His- his back, I mean?”
Danny looks down for a moment, sighing deeply with his leftover fury at Helena for what she did to him. “Better. He split some of them open trying to carry you before we got there but, everything is starting to scar over nicely.” He looks back up at you, his rage having left his body as sadness overtakes him.
“I can’t imagine what it was like fresh. I know that- that must not have been easy to see, even if you two hadn’t been as close as you are now as when it happened.”
As if he knew you were talking about him, Sam stirs beside you. He rubs the sleep from his eyes as he sits up to look at you, glee overtaking his features when he sees you had woken up. He tackles you around the middle, pulling you into his body in a tight embrace. “Polaris! You’re awake!” He yells, loud enough to snap Jake out of his sleep as he frantically looks around the room. Sam lets you go, looking at you as tears begin to well in his eyes. “You’re ok.” He whispers.
You wince, noticing the dull throb of pain on your stomach for the first time. “More or less.” You pull your shirt up slightly to assess the damage. Surprisingly, it was not as bad as you had expected, thinking you would see a stitched-up gash from the dagger. Instead, you see a clean half-healed burn. You look up at Jake, who had stayed silent since the moment he woke up. “You cauterized it?”
Jake looks down shamefully as tears on his waterline catch the light. “I had to.” He says quietly, refusing to meet your gaze. “It was the only way to stop you from bleeding out.”
You reach out to him, brushing his hair back from where it hung like curtains around his face. He looks back up at you, slightly leaning into your touch. “Thank you for saving my life.”
He offers you a small smile. “Of course, I couldn’t let you die. Especially after what Samuel told us. How you cared for him. Thank you, Polaris.”
You steal a glance back to Sam. “Guess we’re even now. I save you, you all save me.”
Sam laughs lightly. “Yeah, I guess so.”
You take in the men around you, noticing one was missing from their usual group and your brows furrow. “Where’s Joshua?”
“Back on The God Song.” Jake starts.
“Yeah, he’s barely left his quarters the whole time we’ve been here. Trying to plan out how to find Helena.” Sam continues.
Danny finishes their explanation. “He’s only left to come check on you.”
Your eyebrows shoot up. “Joshua? Has been checking on me? Doesn’t he hate me?”
Sam shakes his head. “Not since I told them everything that happened back in that cell.”
“Which, speaking of my brother,” Jake starts as he pushes himself to a stand. “We should probably go check on him, and let him know you’re ok of course. Haven’t seen him in a day or two now.”
You sit up, turning to place your feet on the ground as you begin to reach for your boots. You wince as you bend over, stopping yourself as they come within inches of your grasp. Danny and Sam don’t notice, getting up from where each man sat as they began to stretch their limbs. Jake does though, and he drops back down to kneel in front of you as he grabs your boots. “Here, let me.” he offers.
“Thank you.” You allow him to help you into each boot and he stands when he finishes, offering a hand to you to help you up. You take it as he pulls you up to a stand, steadying you as you wobble on your feet. Jake drops one of your hands, keeping the other in his own as you follow the other men to the door and out of the room.
Your group makes its way to The God Song in silence, the weight of everything that had happened to you and Sam still hanging over your heads. You smile to yourself when you see Sam reach for Danny’s hand as you make your way through the town, saying nothing as they intertwine their fingers easily, as if it was second nature to them.
You finally reach The God Song, boarding it to find its deck empty and silent, its crew nowhere to be found as they took a much-needed break in the town. When your group enters Joshua’s quarters, he doesn’t notice you as he stands stooped over his maps and plans, mumbling to himself as he scribbles out notes.
Jake clears his throat, capturing his brother’s attention as he glances up from the table below him. He smiles when he sees you, a genuine smile that you aren’t used to seeing from the man, and he makes his way over to you, throwing his arms around you in a hug when he reaches you. Standing unmoving for a moment, you’re not sure if you were still unconscious and dreaming the interaction up as you laid in your bed at the Kiszka house. You bring your arms up to reciprocate the hug, and he only tightens his grasp when he feels your hands on his back.
He eventually pulls away, looking at you sincerely as he keeps a hand on your shoulder. “I’m so glad to see you conscious. Thank you for taking care of my little brother for me.”
“Of course, Joshua.” Your group says nothing as they observe the interaction, happy to see everyone reunited once more, with a new sense of peace between each person. “Now.” You start. “How are we going to track down this bitch and end her reign once and for all?”

Bonus Sanny Chapter
Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x Reader, Sam Kiszka x Danny Wagner
Genre: ANGST, fluff, hurt/comfort
Word Count: little over 2.1 k
Warnings: descriptions of severe wound, retelling traumatic experience, cleaning wounds, Josh’s a dick and Sam yells at him for it
A/N: the reason this isnt ch 12 is because i wrote it after i had written ch 12 because i wanted to elaborate on Sammy and Dannys story 🥹🫶
--------------------------------------------------------
As soon as they feel the ship stop, Samuel and Jacob are on their feet, watching the door for Daniel’s return. He bursts through it moments later, his eyes landing on Polaris, praying that he would see their chest rising and falling. His gaze goes down to their stomach, an angry welt of burnt flesh in the place of their stab wound. His eyes dart between the two other men as he moves towards the table, gently picking Polaris up. “You- you cauterized it?”
Jacob says nothing as they make their way through the halls, trailing close behind Daniel with Samuel at his side. “He had to.” Samuel whispers.
“That was a smart move, Jacob. You saved their life. With the amount of blood they were losing when I left, they wouldn’t have made it this far if not for you.”
Joshua joins them as they begin down the dock to the town, worry on his face as he looks over Samuel. “Are you ok?”
He brushes the question off. “I’m fine. Polaris needs Rosanna.”
Jacob finally speaks up, his gaze set on Polaris in Daniel’s arms as he directs his words to Joshua. “Go get Rosanna, bring her to the house.”
He scoffs, his steps faltering slightly. “And why should I? They could still be a traitor.”
“THEY AREN’T, JOSHUA!” Samuel’s voice startles them, not used to seeing their younger brother so furious. “They fucking saved my life. So, you’re going to go get Rosanna so we can make sure we have done all we can to save theirs.” His enraged stare is enough to leave the older man speechless.
“Yeah- ok fine, I’ll go get Rosanna.” He separates from the group, jogging in the direction of Rosanna’s tavern as the others continue towards The Kiszka house. Jacob rushes in front of Daniel as they reach the doorstep, opening the door for him quickly as they file in. Daniel immediately heads for the bedroom, setting Polaris down lightly as they wait for their brother to return with Rosanna.
“You ok, Sam?” Daniel’s voice is gentle as he observes the other man standing at Polaris’ side, looking down at them with terror on his face as he absentmindedly chews his cuticles.
His eyes dart up to Daniel as he removes his hand from his lips. “I will be when Rosanna gets here. I will be if they- when they wake up.” Daniel sees tears brimming in his eyes once more, and he decides to drop it. The minutes pass excruciatingly slow as they wait, each man in separate states of distress.
Finally, they hear the front door open, and Rosanna rushes into the room seconds later. She shoos Jacob away from Polaris’ side, kneeling next to the bed as she pulls their shirt up to get a look at the severity of the wound. Joshua lingers in the doorway to the room, not knowing where he would put himself if he fully entered.
“You cauterized it?” Rosanna looks between the men as Jacob nods. “Jacob I could fucking kiss you. That’s what I would’ve done, with how bad it looks like it was.” Rosanna brings her hand to Polaris’ forehead, checking their temperature before bringing her fingers down to their wrist, feeling their pulse. She lets out a breath of relief.
“Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is, there’s not much else that can be done. The bleeding’s stopped, and that burn should heal over faster than if someone had sewn it back up. The bad news is, it might take a while for them to- to wake up.”
She looks between the men apologetically. “With how bad it is, their body’s shut down to conserve energy, to keep them alive. It doesn’t help that they’re practically starving and severely dehydrated.”
“How long could it be? Before they wake up.” Samuel whispers as tears begin to trail down his cheeks.
“Anywhere from a couple days to- to a couple weeks. I’m sorry, kid. You guys did good, you got them out, and you kept them alive.”
“I’m going back to The God Song. Need to start planning how to find Helena again.” Joshua says quickly, already turning to leave.
Samuel shoots up, turning on his brother again. “Could you at least pretend to care about them? For even a fucking minute?”
Joshua turns back, his face blank as he crosses his arms. “Until you tell us what exactly they did to become a saint in your eyes, no.” Samuel says nothing, opening and closing his mouth as he tries to find the words. Joshua sees his opportunity to push his buttons even further, hoping that he would snap if he pushed the right one.
“So, tell us, Samuel. What did Polaris do for you that has got you wrapped around their fucking finger like this?”
Samuel sets his jaw, tears spilling down his cheeks as he says nothing. Not knowing where to start, he decides to show them instead, shrugging Jacob’s jacket off as he turns. The other four gasp at the sight of his back, and while the marks from Helenas whip were mostly scabbed over, a few had broken open and were trailing blood down his back from his attempt to pick Polaris up. Samuel turns around again, throwing Jacob’s jacket on one of the empty beds as he stares at the floor, not wanting to meet the others eyes.
“We hadn’t even been there for a fucking day when Helena did it. She took me to the room next to where we were being kept and- and she-” Samuel stops himself as a sob shakes his body, but the others need no further explanation to know exactly what she did. He takes a deep breath, trying to collect himself before continuing.
“I blacked out at some point. The next thing I remember was the cold stone underneath me and Polaris at my side. They managed to clean it the best they could- they- they used the little water they gave us and the sleeve of their shirt to do it. Let me rest my head on them to try and find what little comfort we could in that fucking cell.”
He wipes his cheeks roughly with the back of his hand as his tears slow. “They managed to get one of the guards to bring them some alcohol, so it wouldn’t get infected. Helped me wrap it with the scraps of my shirt. They refused to let me sleep against the dirty walls, so let me rest against them. They showed me- they showed me immense kindness and care when I had called them a traitor not even three hours before. They never fucking left my side, made sure I knew I wasn’t alone in that godforsaken place.”
His eyes lock on Joshua’s, his stare intense and serious as he finishes his story. “So that’s why I care so much about them, Joshua. Because no matter how much fucking excruciating pain I was in, no matter how fucking hopeless I felt, how fucking close I was to giving up completely-” His voice breaks, causing him to take a moment to collect himself once more. “They were there. They didn’t leave me, so I’m not leaving them.”
The room is silent as they process everything Samuel had just revealed. Joshua’s voice is quiet and full of shame when he finds it. “Samuel, I- I’m so sorry. I didn’t know-”
“No. How could you? Because they- they always have to be the fucking bad guy to you.”
“Sam I-”
He cuts his oldest brother off harshly. “You can go now. Find a way to get to the bitch that did this, or whatever you were going to do.”
Joshua’s mouth closes as his shoulders droop at his words. Despite knowing he was more than deserving of them, they still cut him deep. He turns without another word, deciding to let Samuel cool off before trying to apologize again. The room is filled with tension at his departure. With the way he looked up to his older brothers, Samuel never spoke to Joshua like that. He had never spoken to anyone like that, had never been fueled with that level of rage before.
“C’mere, Samuel. Let me see your back.” Rosanna stands, making her way around the bed towards the man before she looks him over carefully.
“You don’t need stitches, not with how healed they are. Just need to clean you up and get some clean bindings over them and they should be alright. Polaris- Polaris did an amazing job, with what little resources you had. Come out into the other room and I’ll get you fixed up.”
Daniel cuts in, starting towards them. “It’s alright, I can do it. You should get back to your bar, make sure they haven’t raided all your good liquor stores yet.”
She laughs lightly, silently praying that everything was just the way she had left it at her bar. “If you insist.” She pats Samuel’s shoulder lightly before she makes her way towards the door. “You’re in good hands, Samuel. Don’t hesitate to yell for me if either of you need anything.”
With that, she leaves without another word. Samuel sighs, bringing his hand to his forehead. Jacob looks over at his younger brother, apology written across his face. “Sam I-”
“Please, Jake. I don’t mean to sound like an ass but, not right now. I don’t want any apologies for what happened to me, I just want Polaris to be ok.”
Jacob stays quiet, understanding where his brother was coming from. Daniel takes hold of his bicep gently, beginning to pull him from the room. “Come on, Sammy. Let’s go get you cleaned up.”
Samuel plants his feet as he shakes his head, trying his best to resist Daniel. “I’m not leaving them.”
Daniel brings his mouth close to Samuel’s ear, speaking loud enough for only him to hear. “They’ll be ok with Jacob, and if anything happens, which it won’t, we’ll only be in the other room.”
Samuel’s gaze goes between Polaris and Daniel a few times before he finally gives in, Daniel leading them out of the room before gently closing the door behind him. He guides Samuel onto a tall, backless bar stool before leaving him momentarily, returning with a bottle of their strongest alcohol, some clean cloth, and bandages.
Daniel says nothing as he sets in on cleaning the other man’s back, unintentionally flinching from his skin as he winces at the contact. After a few minutes, he finds his voice again. “As much as I hate what you two went through, that you even needed it in the first place, I’m- I’m glad you had Polaris in there. To remind you that you didn’t have to get through it alone. Like-” He cuts himself off briskly, not knowing how Samuel would feel about the comparison.
Samuel finishes his sentence. “Like I did for you. When your parents died.”
“Yes.” He sets the cloth down, finding the bandages before beginning to wrap Samuel’s back.
“I thought about you so many times when we were in there. Everyday.” His words are barely a whisper, his confession falling upon the silence of the room as Daniel pauses his motions.
“Really?”
“Yes. I didn’t- I didn’t know if I would ever see you again, Danny.” Daniel doesn’t know how to respond as he finishes, tucking the end of the bandage into itself gently. Samuel turns in his seat to face the other man, his eyes locking with Daniel’s as he works up the courage to continue.
“I thought I was going to die without telling you-” He tears his eyes from Daniel, looking down at his hands in his lap as he picked at the skin around his nails.
“Without telling me what, Sam?” Samuel remembers what Polaris had told him that first day they were in the cell together, about how Daniel felt the same as he did. Daniel brings a hand down to the other man’s hands, his thumbs lightly grazing his knuckles as he swept it across his skin in comforting motions. Samuel brings his gaze back to rest on Daniel, seeing nothing in his eyes but sincere care.
“That I loved you. I always have, Danny. I was- I was too scared that you didn’t feel the same, that I would ruin whatever it was that we had by telling you.” The tear that runs down his cheek is quickly brushed away by Daniel’s hand as he brings it up to cup his jaw, slightly bending towards him until his lips are on Samuel’s. He leans into his touch, one of his hands coming up to cup Daniel’s as his other tangles in his hair, pulling him towards him.
Daniel eventually breaks their kiss, staying within Samuel’s touch as he looks at the other man, his pupils blown wide. “I love you too, Sammy. Always have, always will.”
