I really really hope if there's a season 2, we get more info and background on Pete. He's the only character from the main 6 who's past has barely been explored. And yet I'm so intrigued by him because he was given some of the most hard hitting dialogues:
1. When I grew up, I learned there are no heroes or villains.
Why did he think that? What hapoened in his life that made him face such a drastic change? He used to watch superhero movies with his friends and now he's part of the bad guys. Was he another victim of our failed systems that made him lose faith and realise the grey realities of life? Did Korn help him in some way which lead to his devotion to the main family and seeing the "bad guys" in a new light?
2. They beat us, not because we suck, but because they suck.
Please we NEED to see his childhood and flashbacks about his father. I want to see Pete as a child getting into boxing. Did he have a teacher that he was close to? How were the dynamics between his grandma, dad and him? What about his mom? Does he have any siblings (I doubt it or maybe they are dead as per my HC where he has a dead twin brother). Also the most important thing. DID HE KILL HIS FATHER?!
3. His entire monologue about being human/having no feelings during the fight with Vegas in ep13. CHEF'S KISS!
This entire thing right there has so much potential. The show MUST dive deep into Pete's psyche because no way in hell have his issues been tied up nicely in a bow and gone away. Nope. I will be needing Vegas to work upon them and help his man. I want Vegas to be thirsty for answers (like I am), to be obsessive, but not pushy, about Pete's broken self. I want his curiosity because he doesn't really know much about Pete, does he? And then how's he supposed to consume him lmao
There's SO MUCH they could do with Pete's character and who he is apart from his mafia personality. I want to see his village, his grandma, who he once dreamt of being, who he is now with Vegas and Macau (please show us vegaspete rasing Macau who's frustrated because till now he had zero decent parents and now he has two wtf), if he has friends other than Arm, Pol and Porsche with whom he is on an equal footing.
PS I also will be NEEDING a return of the Tankhun squad shenanigans and them kidnapping Pete for movie night. Vegas barges into the main house to find Pete and Porsche painting each other's faces with horror movie night makeup and nopes out of there like his ass is on fire.

Crying screaming I-
Macau had nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram. Therefore, he had a plethora of images on his phone. Mostly of his and his lavish and aesthetically pleasing life. No one could tell but this lifestyle was fairly new to him. When his father was alive, he wasn't allowed to do any of it. He didn't have friends, he didn't have a functioning family, and he didn't even have the fake comfort and validation of social media. He wasn't simply allowed to be a teenager. Life was a misery, to say the least.
But as the wise men say, nothing lasts forever. Not even bad times. So when good times came Macau adapted quickly. He was a gen Z at his peak. His DMs were packed with thirst traps and admirers. He would occasionally reply to some but mostly text and exchange memes with his friends.
Pete had said Macau had become some sort of influencer. His technologically challenged brother merely nodded at Pete's comment.
The day this picture was taken, Pete was in the mood for eating out. So the three of them went to a local Thai food restaurant. Macau wasn't usually the one to set his phone down and appreciate his surroundings. But he was glad he felt bored enough at that moment to do exactly that. His eyes landed on the two people in front of him.
Pete was showing Vegas something on his phone with a huge dimpled smile. Must have been a meme. Because Vegas looked up from his own phone—Macau could tell he was either reading a news blog or checking his emails because that's all he did on his phone—and smiled at Pete's phone screen.
It was at that moment that Macau realized he had a family. It was not what he had envisioned when he had been younger but it was no less perfect.
His brother was his shield from all the evils. The man protected Macau to the best of his abilities. He took hits for him, he shouldered blames for him, and when teenage angst took over Macau and he messed up Vegas cleaned his mess for him. Up until Pete, Vegas had only two goals in life. To gain the approval of their unworthy father and to protect Macau from their world. And even though the first one was a lost battle, Macau would say his brother did more than a great job on the second one. Whose brother did so much for them? Wasn't he lucky in that aspect?
When Macau's eyes landed on Pete, a memory flashed in front of his eyes. It had been the talent competition in his senior year of high school. He had casually mentioned the night before that he would be acting in a play organized by his class and he would be playing the best friend of the lead. It had been a two-minute role. It wasn't been a big deal, he had added. To be honest, he hadn't expected his brother or Pete to show up. No one ever showed up. Not for sports day, not on his class graduations, not even when he had won 1st place for that science project. Vegas had always been busy and their father had never cared enough.
So he had been rightfully surprised when he heard a familiar voice yelling his name when he had stepped onto the stage to deliver his lines. He had looked among the audience and saw his brother smiling at him with a proud look on his face. And then he had seen the person to whom that voice belonged, with a huge smile on his face holding up his phone recording Macau on stage. It had been Pete.
The play had been awful for Macau. He had forgotten his lines, choked up, and messed up the small dance he had to do at the end. But when he had come to meet his family, no one scolded him. They had patted him on his back being genuinely proud of him. And then they took him out for ice cream. It had been the best day of his life.
Macau blinked rapidly to get rid of the blurriness of his vision and took a sip from his glass of water to clear his aching throat. He then took that picture on his phone and put it on his Instagram with the caption, "Family's night out."
He tagged Pete only. Because his grumpy brother didn't have any social media. So when Pete's phone pinged and he checked the notification before looking up to meet Macau's eyes, Macau simply smiled at him. This was the first time Macau had acknowledged Pete as a part of his family. He could tell Pete was happy. And honestly? Macau felt pretty darn happy too.

Some nerdy stats about KP and how they actually tell us a lot about Pete's character
So the other day I made a list with all scenes that Vegas and Pete are in and at first I put "None" for ep1, because I thought "Well, Pete and Vegas have been introduced in ep2, right?"
But then I decided to revisit ep1 for another reason and lo and behold, there was Pete! He was right there, standing next to Ken, Arm and Pol as they picked Kinn up from the gas station. Pete was the only one who was all blurred out.
Tumblr media
Since then, Pete has been in every episode of KP, even the side story. I was actually quite surprised when I looked at my finished list and realized that Pete has been in 66 scenes so far. That's quite a large number, I think. Vegas has been in 48. But if you had asked me before I made that list who we've seen more of, I would have said Vegas.
The great thing about this is that even though I've been paying attention to Pete very early on, since I started watching KP mainly for the VegasPete couple, there were a lot of scenes were I didn't notice him during my first 1-2 watches of the show.
I think this is quite a genius way to tell the audience more about Pete's character. Because even though Pete is always there, he is hardly ever noticed. He is just a blurry figure that stands at the back or the side. He is the one who accompanies other, seemingly more important characters and offers them companionship, guidance and advice. Pete is handled like a minor background character, he is the loyal bodyguard and the funny guy.
And that reflects his personality quite well. Pete doesn't want you to notice him, he wants to melt into the background, so that he can remain unseen. Even Vegas doesn't really focus on him at first.
Tumblr media
Because of his childhood trauma Pete has learned that if he doesn't get noticed, he doesn't get hurt. Life is easier for him that way. Sure, he must feel lonely and he's not quite happy either, but he also doesn't have to deal with more pain.

Every time I see the final scene of the episode 13 I hear "Sweet home Alabama"💀
Yeah, I know the plot from the novel but with what we have in the series so far it's pretty fitting the situation.

Dehumanising Pete
I think Pete, a former abused child, full of empathy and cynicism, working in the crime world has always felt a sense of displacement in this world. He started his life with a violent father, put into a violent sport, and then ultimately into a violent profession. He is an intrinsically smart person who understands other people and their motivations, it's an amazing quality to have but it can also be draining on one's mental health. Highly empathetic people sometimes suffer from frequent if not chronic bouts of identity crisis. I think working for the main family and Tankhun made his life much much better than what it must have been but it would still be a slightly dehumanised role to fill - a bodyguard's literal job is to lay his own life down for their employer and that cannot be good for ones sense of self worth no matter how good your bosses are. And I think Kinn and Tankhun are good bosses, bad writing aside - it's just the very nature profession that cannot be good for anybody.
We see Pete go through such a bout of the aforementioned identity crisis mixed with a hell lot of anger when he lashes out at Vegas - I have always been useless, just kill me, I have nothing left, not even my humanity, just kill me. It was heartbreaking to watch really but his anger had a very clear, very simple reason. He trusted Vegas with his freedom, his body and his well being and Vegas returned that favour with the worst form of betrayal - by treating him like an object - to love, to cherish, to care or to beat, to abuse, to torture at his convenience. Vegas failed at showing up when Pete needed it the most and sure he himself is being abused but that's irrelevant, especially to a person like Pete who actively chose to break the cycle of violence.
Tumblr media
He hates being bound, he hates that he had the chance to escape but didn't and he hates Vegas for taking advantage of his slip. Most of all he hates himself for slipping up in the first place. We see that in the scene where he slaps himself(can't find the gif)
Tumblr media
Lastly he acknowledges that no matter how much Vegas, this world and he himself dehumanise him, he is still human, he isn't unbreakable. He deserves to feel safe unconditionally if not loved, he deserves dignity if not loyalty. He calls out Vegas for being a self absorbed asshole and he stands up for himself, but by this time he is already exhausted and broken.
Tumblr media
Once he breaks free and reaches his safe place (the main family home) he is still not over his experience and I believe while he did develope some attachment to Vegas, that is not why he is still in distress. To me this looks like a straightforward case of PTSD. He went through a horrible thing and that has left him with trauma - his feelings are just making it worse.
Tumblr media
For me as a viewer, while I do care for Vegas' character arc in and on itself, I don't give a shit about him when it comes to Pete. If it takes shooting Vegas in the head for Pete to move on, id cheer him on. If it takes him to just ignore Vegas, that's also fine. Maybe his healing will involve Vegas - again, don't give a shit. But I just want to see Pete feel like he deserves to live, and live fully in constant peace of not constant happiness.
