It has been 20 years since my graduation thesis to become a biologist was presented at the University of Évora. This was the first slide of that presentation and my graphic design skills were pure instinct so don't take this as my best work. The watercolour illustration is my favorite part of it, and it takes my mind away from the fact that almost all those orange squares on the grid (which is a map of rufous bush chat presence) are now underwater in the Alqueva dam. This is a Mediterranean Monk Seal, one of the most endangered seals int he world, and a rare and iconic animal of Portuguese waters. Despite the name , this species has colonies also in the Atlantic, with a small recovering population in the Madeira archipelago, where it is know as "lobo-marinho" - literally meaning sea wolf. After a successful rebound in the last decade or so, the current world population stands at around 600-700 individuals (of which 350-450 are mature animals). At a time when Deep Sea Mining is being discussed, to show people what it looks like down there is utterly important. Monteiro's Storm Petrels breed during the "warm season" (Apr-Oct) exclusively in some islets of the Azores archipelago. It is genetically isolated even from other storm petrels that breed in the same places but during the cold season, and hence it is morphologically and vocally distinguishable. "Show-me the Sea!" is a bilingual storybook aimed at increasing Ocean Literacy of pre-schoolers. A digital version of it won the Excellency Award for Educational Resources from Casa das Ciências (casadasciencias.org) in 2020. In 2022 it was published in hard cover by @letras.lavadas and was approved into the Portuguese "Plano Nacional de Leitura" - a curated list of books which are advised for particular age groups.
