unrelated to anything but stephen maturin reads so bisexual to me like i don't even mean that in a shipping way or that i think he was intentionally written that way he just reads to me so much as a guy that has had something with another guy sometime in his mysterious past & still lowkey of has those inclinations but is just incredibly reserved + private + practical + working in the navy + not really inclined to casual sex at this point in his life + in love w a woman, so it never comes up. the way like every other book there's some bit where the narration mentions offhand how tolerant & accepting he is to the idea of gayness or how he has such and such old friend who's flamboyantly gay or other characters repeatedly reading him as gay. this is just an intrinsic but unspoken part of his character to me. do you get what i mean
