Gardens By The Bay (Marina Bay, Singapore)
Designers - Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter
The Gardens by the Bay contains three waterfront gardens. The Bay South Garden is 130 acres and is still being developed. The Bay East Garden is 79 acres with 1.2 miles of waterfront that embroiders the Marina Reservoir and opened in 2011. The Bay Central Garden is 37 acres with 1.9 miles of waterfront and opened in 2012. It also contains two conservatories, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The Flower Dome is larger and contains garden displays showcasing Australia, South Africa, South America, the Mediterranean Sea, and California. The Cloud Forest is taller because it contains a treetop walk but is smaller in size and contains ferns, orchids, conifers, club-mosses, fly-traps, and tree ferns.
The Supertree Grove, another part of The Gardens, contains 12 Supertrees. A Supertree is a man-made tree, twenty-five to fifty meters tall, made up of a reinforcement concrete core, trunk, planting panels, and a canopy. The canopy provides shade during the day and the whole tree has embedded lights to light up the night sky. Also, eleven of the Supertrees have photovoltaic cells to harvest solar energy to sustain the park. The Supertree Grove is beautiful during the day and at night. If I were were go to Singapore, I would spend a whole day just exploring the Supertree Grove.
Once I heard about this project, I knew that one of my posts would be about the Gardens by the Bay. I was first introduced to the Gardens by the Bay while at my internship at a local architecture firm. A worker there showed me the video listed below and, when I got home, I researched all about the gardens and Supertrees. I love the idea of these gardens so much and can not wait to visit Singapore because of them.

  Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright is considered one of the most influential architects of his time for residential buildings. His modernistic views were so ahead for his time that he often struggled for acceptance. Out of his more than 1,000 designs, about four hundred have been built. He’s talents for designing Prairie School houses surpassed those of his colleagues. Wright was so successful because his inspiration of nature brought about a different and unique approach to designing and building houses, unlike most architects of his time. The American Institute of Architects named Wright the greatest American architect in 1991.
It is amazing how Frank Lloyd Wright, a man who lived from 1867 to 1959, designed modern homes a few decades before they became popular. He changed the way residential homes were designed and, since then, not much has changed in the designs of modern homes. Wright is the one who started my love for architecture. In junior year of high school, my civil engineering and architecture teacher made us research one of his many Lego Architecture buildings. I picked Falling Water and, after finishing the project, realized that I wanted to design and create buildings in the near future in hopes of inspiring as many people as he did.
