so the suspicions he had during their last interaction were valid, after all ! this guy was some sort of cop, or at the very least, worked with law enforcement. it seemed like both of them learned something about the other ; if he could've withheld his fun fact, he would've. things tended to be easier when people weren't aware that he was a walsh child, as few and far between that was. most times, it only resulted in a headache. hopefully this wouldn't. regarding the incident. jae drew in a breath as he dropped the cloth on the counter, a faint sigh being exhaled. his gaze didn't meet the other's as he gave a short reply. “ sure, ” without delay, he headed towards the staff room, expecting the man to follow him — by good fortune, they were sufficiently staffed today ; surely, no one would care if he disappeared for a bit. beyond the door, a spacious, somewhat cozy area greeted them, the only other presence being jae's dog, curled up on his bed. “ you can sit, ” it was stated offhandedly as he took a moment to give some affection to the shepherd, who then followed him to where his handler joined the other ( the detective ? ) at the table. weary eyes finally landed on him, blinking. “ go ahead. ”

The look of faint surprise that painted Gael's face when he was suddenly locking eyes with someone he had met not a month ago was brief, but evident. "Oh, hey." It was a greeting tempered with uneasiness as, at least as far as he was concerned, there was suddenly a lot more information between the two that he knew that he wasn't privy to during their last interaction.

This was a Walsh child, one of the youngest and, of course, impossibly tethered to the Roseland case that Gael had tried his best not to become associated with if he could help it, for his own reasons. Unfortunately, probably for both of them, he was still a Walsh child, adopted or no, which meant that the name was higher up on the list of potential suspects.

"Questions regarding the incident." Gael cleared his throat, dark eyes looking around the rest of the coffee shop. "I won't keep you for very long, I just have to cover a few bases. Dot the i's and cross the t's, if you will." He tilted his head slightly, his expression softening. "You got somewhere private we could talk?"

eyes set on his bike, he took a drag of his own cigarette, giving a slight nod of the head. “ about half of it, ” he answered. the eastern half had yet to be explored, but that would probably be done by a different means of transportation. “ the west coast road trip is my favourite one to take. ”

“ how many do you have ? ” while she sorted through her stock, he glanced around the rest of the shop. a rare feeling of ease washed over him every time he visited ; it seemed like it was the only place in the cursed place that wasn't tainted. “ i've been ... ” was there really a good answer ? the best he could give was a half shrug. “ how's everything with you ? ”

Smiling as the baby face of the Walsh family comes through the door, though his features are somewhat more defined now. There is a familiarity that remained, he had been closer to her brother growing up. Time comes and goes, and it does not stop, no matter that she faced one of the worst yet life-changing events in her life. she tried not to think of the negative.

"how many would you like?" she then began to look through the section of seeds she had, categorizing it by name. "the day is beautiful enough to plant, the best thing about spring. how have you been Jae?"

of fucking course jae had to have attended the one festival where things went awry, which was putting it rather lightly, in truth. a body had to have been discovered in the wicker, because when did things in antioch not revolve around murder ? normalcy had been proven to be a castle in the sky a long time ago. it was somewhat of a miracle he'd shown up for his shift at all, having strongly considered just staying put. at least, then, he wouldn't have to involuntarily listen to the topic of the day ! customer after customer, it was the same — have you heard ... how do you feel ... who do you think ... did he look like he was itching to gossip ? anticipating more idle tatter from overly chatty patrons, a sigh was heaved once the door chimed ; however, the familiar face was unexpected. his head tilted. “ he might, ” trademark expressionless gaze redirecting, he continued what he'd been doing before, cloth wiping down the rest of the counter. “ questions regarding what ? ”

Gael was nothing if not fastidious. He had lists, and lists for those lists, and every list was cross-referenced and up until recently put on one of those comical billboards with red string attaching every seeming-unrelated thing to other unrelated things. He had done a lot of observing at the festival and did further research looking into the town's notable criminals once the local authorities found a godforsaken body in the middle of the pyre.

Leon Walsh wasn't his first suspect, but at this point he wasn't willing to take any chances. This time, he went into The Scoop where he felt the conflicting warmth of the shop against his neck.

Nodding to the employee who greeted him upon entry, he was "pleased" to see that the establishment wasn't too busy. "Does one..." He glanced down to regard a notepad. "Sung-Jae Walsh work here?" He asked. "I have a few questions for him."

there was a certain air about the stranger that piqued jae's interest — something familiar. it was in the way he carried himself, perspicacious, professional, and proving his good will ... surely, he wasn't just a good samaritan. it could easily be on account of his own skepticism regarding the intentions of others, reading into everything perhaps a little too much ( hey, he had good reason ! ) ... or, in the consideration of just how many encounters he had with figures of authority over the course of his life, a sixth sense of sorts had been cultivated ... who was to say ? either the man had moved here only recently, or jae lived under a rock ( also entirely probable ), having failed to note any recognition. was he a detective ? undercover cop ? a badge wasn't visible, but he was almost certain that there was one somewhere on his person. new to town ... a spark of familiarity ... the phrasing of his sentence ... it would make sense, at least ! antioch was the famed location for all things bizarre. “ seen each other in passing, maybe, ” though he had no recollection of such a thing. “ what brought you here, of all places ? ”

Gael handed the keys back to the stranger, with the agent being decidedly more self-assured in how he carried himself. He understood that there was a thanks that was said either out of absent social obligation as his attention was more obviously focused towards placing the keys back into a [hopefully different] pocket or a lack of confidence. [Stiff body language. Alert. Anticipatory? Trying to avoid someone, or used to being called on?] Given what he'd been briefed on regarding the town, being naturally on edge didn't concern Gael perhaps as much as it should've.

"Ah, no worries." The agent replied lightly with a half-shrug. "Keys suck to lose; I lost the key to my apartment once; that was a fun day." He sucked in air through his teeth. "Took the locksmith... three hours to get there. Waste of time-- anyway, I'm getting off track. Sorry." That story was fabricated. People liked when others could identify with their plight. He'd never lost a set of keys, he was just too good at not being able to let things go.

He did, however, give the stranger a brief, but curious look. "You seem familiar." He mused. "I'd ask if I've seen you around town before but I'm pretty new so that line of questioning doesn't tend to work."

if there was ever a time for him to feel awkward, it was now. despite being notorious for his standoffishness, the majority of his interactions with others consisting of few words, the feeling, surprisingly, wasn't something he experienced. he just couldn't be bothered to, well, care ... that much ... in most cases ... that was what he told himself, at least ! “ thought i'd what ? ” he took note of the other's grimace, eyes slightly narrowing. small talk was as excruciating as it was trivial, but what else could've been expected ? it wasn't like they were on great terms ... or terms at all. “ ... fine, ” very excruciating. “ you ? ” god, he should just leave.

immediately, leon regrets having said anything at all. he should have stuck to his gut and avoided contact with him—why should he assume that jae would want to see him? or anyone for that matter. recent times have made him too bold for his own good. "sorry, i didn't mean to startle you like that," he says, trying ( and failing ) not to grimace. "i just thought you'd—nevermind, it doesn't matter. how have you been?"

periods of repose were as scarce as they were longed for. from frenetic schedules, to setbacks with his health, and now, the production of his family's story that was to be plastered on the big screen ... how many times could someone tie a knot at the end of their rope before running out of thread entirely ? overwrought wasn't a strong enough word. yet, in the midst of all of the chaos that defined him, there was seo-jun. a silver lining, the burdens on his shoulders feeling slightly less blistering in the other's presence. quite some time had passed since they'd last properly spent time together ( jae and his tendency to sink into oblivion was mostly to blame ), so when his bike rolled into the lot towards their significantly overdue reunion, a ripple of excitement was felt. it wasn't a difficult task to identify his friend's car among the cluster, having spent more time in it than his own. his dismount was swift, keys pocketed and helmet suspended on the handlebar, a smile that didn’t require any force graced tired features when jun called out. “ annyeong, ” the greeting was quiet as he approached, “ hopefully you haven’t been waiting long. ”

A drive-in movie? The thrill of combining two joys into one exhilarating experience was undeniable. With his hectic work schedule leaving little time for leisure, the notion of watching a film amidst the comfort of his car held a special allure. jae gets sick pretty often </3 he's always had a really weak immune system, so he falls under the weather very easily. go to remedies ? probably just wallowing in bed with some chicken noodle soup, wondering who the fuck cursed him. jae vc: i'm tired of this, grandpa !

it was more peculiar than anything that the youngest walsh boy had made an appearance at all. extensive crowds, loud conversations ; everything that gave definition to the word festivity ... he loathed. one might ask what prompted him to be in attendance despite it notoriously not being his scene, and they'd be valid in doing so ! was it curiosity getting the best of him ? or, was it that he knew the eldest would be among the masses ? arms crossed over his chest, the only movement in his rigid form being the raise of a nearly finished cigarette to his lips, accustomed stoical expression unwavering — quite the contrast to that of his brother's. dropping and snubbing the butt out beneath his shoe, jae looked up at the other. “ does it look like i am ? ” purely rhetorical, he blinked, “ enough with the showmanship ... we need to talk. ”

It was very important to see and be seen and yet no matter how thoroughly Linus believed it was important to stay relevant, he was also tempted to make a quick exit to the left because his siblings hadn't exactly been happy with him lately. There was a good chance that whatever conversation was coming up was one he didn't want to have in public, but too late for that. Plastering a big smile on his face, Linus smiled broadly, a pure entertainer as he called out, "Jaaaaae. How are you, my wonderful little brother, are you enjoying yourself?"
