IM NOT DEAD! ...just nude 🤷🏼‍♂️ Like most of you, I am pretty much quarantined in LA. This new way of life is likely to last months, not just weeks. I had planned to write this as a fitness post but I just can not address the obvious PLEASE STAY HOME. I know it’s hard to make sacrifices like this when it seems like everything outside is fine. It’s not. It won’t be. We are staying home to get ahead of it. The measures we institute today won’t pay dividends for another 2 weeks. So it may feel like you are staying in for no reason but you are not. What you do MATTERS. A sobering example… Due to lack of testing and the rate at which COVID-19 spreads, WAY more people than we know likely already have it as it can take 2 weeks to see any symptoms at all. For every infected person that goes on about their normal day they are statistically likely... 🦠infect 3 more people. 🦠The next day those 3 people go out and infect another 3 people each 🦠now 9 people are unknowingly transmitting the virus. 🦠Follow that pattern for 10 days and that 1 person has set of a chain that has infected... 59,000 people over 10 days. And that’s just if each person only goes out one more day. This is what exponential growth looks like. For every day that infected doesn’t self isolate they are causing 59,000 people to become infected. At a 1% death rate that one day causes 590 deaths This is serious. Please stay home. That doesn’t mean seeing different friends every day either. If you see a different friend every day and one of them has it, then you’ve just transmitted it to all your other friends as well as the other friends they are seeing too. 🥊 Do you BOUNCE during sets? ⁣ ⁣ You know what I mean...⁣ ⁣ ...when you do a bicep curl and bounce at the very top when the dumbbell is nearest to your shoulder.⁣ ⁣ …or during a bench press when you lower the bar to your chest and bounce at the bottom as you reverse course.⁣ ⁣ weeeeell REVERSE. THAT. BOUNCE.⁣ ⁣ You heard me.⁣ ⁣ As much as I would love clients to stop thinking in terms of single arbitrary reps, we naturally do it as a way of breaking down an intimidating set into more easily digestible steps along the way.⁣ ⁣ Unfortunately ‘the bounce’ happens at the absolute WORST point in the exercise.⁣ ⁣ Most people bounce because it’s the hardest part of the exercise.⁣ ⁣ Guess what? Thats the part that matter’s the most.⁣ ⁣ Most trainers would just say ‘Don’t bounce’.⁣ ⁣ But do yo know what? Bouncer’s gonna bounce.⁣ ⁣ So I say this, revers that shit.⁣ ⁣ Bounce at the opposite end of the exercise.⁣ ⁣ Start the exercise where you are currently bouncing and bounce at what would usually be the beginning of the exercise.⁣ ⁣ Take bench press for example. Usually you would start with arms fully outstretched above you. Lowering down and up is one rep(vid swipe right)⁣ ⁣ Not anymore chump.⁣ ⁣ Lower slowly down and start counting from the bottom up.⁣ ⁣ Extending the bar up and then back down. This is now one rep. (vid swipe right 2x)⁣ ⁣ This way you bounce at the top(the most useless part of the exercise) and you slow down to restart from the bottom, effectively dragging out the most important and effective part of the exercise - the amortization period when the bar is closest to your chest!⁣ ⁣ This has the added bonus of increasing time under tension at both ends of the exercise. Hear me out…⁣ ⁣ Most people take micro rests in-between each rep when the bio-mechanical pressure is at it’s lightest. ❌ Don’t make THIS ONE mistake in 2020…⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ There are plenty of mistakes I see people making every day in the gym. Even friends of mine.. even me! Mitigating these mistakes and trying our hardest to adhere to proper technique as best we can is how we improve.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ HOWEVER.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ If there’s one mistake I can guarantee you are making it’s this one.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Many of my clients will message me saying something along the lines of:⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ "I’m not feeling this exercises"⁣⁣⁣⁣ "This exercise is too easy"⁣⁣⁣⁣ "This exercise doesn’t do anything for me"⁣⁣⁣⁣ "I don’t think I’m doing it right"⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I will usually then ask them to send me a video even though I can bet money that I already know their main issue.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Firstly if they ‘aren’t feeling it’ in the right muscle… they are definitely doing it wrong. Sure every now and again no matter how good your form is, you may just be having an off day. But if a client consistently has this problem, something isn’t aligning.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ So what’s their main issue?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ GOING. TOO. FAST.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ They / you / everyone needs to slow the fuck down when it comes to weightlifting.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Time 👏🏼 after 👏🏼 tension 👏🏼⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Reps don’t matter as much as time under tension matters. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Drag out each rep so that you adequately stimulate the muscle?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Think of it this way...⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 🐖 12 reps - one seconds down, one second up⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Vs.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 🦍 8 reps - 4 seconds down, two seconds up.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 🐖 = 12 x 1+1 = 24 seconds time under tension⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 🦍 = 8 x 4+2 = 48 seconds time under tension.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ The 🦍 is doing less reps but getting TWICE as much muscle stimulation. 💣Most people aren’t doing HIIT right. My favorite HIIT exercises…. is BATTLE ROPES.⁣ ⁣ HIIT - and I mean reeeal HIIT is all out, peddle to the metal, intense cardio exercise followed by a complete recovery period of up to a couple of minutes. ⁣ ⁣ How many of those HIIT classes let you recover for 4 minutes?! Exactly.⁣ ⁣ Once you start to decrease your intensity so you can make it to the end of the set or the end of the timer you are no longer doing HIIT. ⁣ ⁣ Only certain exercises can be true HIIT. Think running for your life. If you can replicate that feeling of exertion with a particular exercise then it can be used in HIIT.⁣ ⁣ Any exercises that require a good amount of control cannot be true HIIT, because a part of you is holding back, trying to do the exercise safely. You are not truly giving it your MAX EFFORT. If you are holding back because you know you have to last a certain amount of time, that too is not really HIIT.⁣ ⁣ Still a bloody good workout but if we are going to be technically correct about it, and why not - it ain’t HIIT.⁣ ⁣ If you’ve never done battle ropes before then start with this.: ⁣ 💣 10 seconds on, 30 seconds off as fast as you can ⁣ x 8 rounds.⁣ ⁣ 10 seconds seems like a tiny amount of time but trust me, if you are going as hard as you can, you’ll be thanking me it aint longer. ⁣ ⁣ 30 seconds might even be too much rest time but, by the end 5th round again, you’ll be thanking me.⁣ ⁣ If this is too easy, first increase the 10s to 15s then 20s, THEN start decreasing the rest period from 30s downs to 20s. Only the good stuff 😉⁣ ⁣ On the fitness side...⁣ ⁣ A lot of my personal training sessions act as masterclasses with clients where rather than just giving them a workout, we focus on muscle activation and optimal technique for their particular bodies so that they can take away invaluable information about the relationship between their bodies and various exercises. ⁣ ⁣ This is the key to amazing results. ⁣ ⁣ Any personal trainer worth his salt can take you through a decent workout or give you a plan to do yourself at home. But where I’ve found my value is ‘waking up‘ peoples bodies so that they react the workouts in the right way. ⁣ ⁣ We do this by ‘Workshopping’ various exercises, positions, leverage mechanisms, neuromuscular cues, custom grips etc⁣ ⁣ I don’t except:⁣ ⁣ “This exercise never works for me” ⁣ ⁣ or⁣ ⁣ “I never feel it in my back”.⁣ ⁣ A recent client just told me “I’ve had 20 personal trainers in my life and I have NEVER felt my back activate like that.
