Emily sat crossed legged on the front desk (like she used to as a kid). If her mom saw her, she would raise her eyebrows and tell her to get off, but Bex still let her sit up there (as long as there weren’t any guests around).

“No, that’s it.” Emily said, “There’s a lot more options for next year, but they like to squeeze freshman into tiny rooms with a stranger. I guess if we can survive that on top of all the other adjustments we have to make our first year, we can get through the next three.” She shrugged.

“I wonder what my roommate will be like,” She said, “I hope she’s not a total psycho.”

It was a little weird: going away to college and dealing with dorms and roommates was one of the first new experiences that Emily was going to have that neither Rebecca or her mom had gone through, themselves. Neither one of them had had a traditional college experience (they were both busy raising a toddler by the time they were Emily’s age ... something that terrified Emily just to think about. She’d managed to accidentally kill her low maintenance plant that sat in her bedroom window after about a month ... she wasn’t sure she had it in her to raise a kid at her age.)

“Did you have a roommate when you were off at boarding school?” Emily asked. “Did they give you guys a bigger room than this?”

Quality Time || Emily + Bex

Bex didn’t like to dwell on the past often but bearing witness to Emily preparing for college was causing waves of nostalgia. She remembered the little girl with a mop of brown hair who would balance on the wall outside of the hotel while Bex and Andrea would fantasize about turning it into a thriving resort one day. She remember the young girl running full speed up the docks to show her the fish she’d caught out of the ocean with Jason. She remembered the teenager, sitting in the corner of Bex’s office and reading aloud her English paper to make sure it was absolutely perfect.

Things were changing so rapidly, Bex could hardly keep up. She couldn’t believe it was only a few months ago when she’d been wondering exactly what her life was going to be like when Emily went away to school. Would she and Andrea start a book club? Maybe they could finally start on that expansion they’d been planning for the resort?

But now things seemed to be resetting in a strange way with Cass’s arrival and currently situation. Bex knew she shouldn’t be stressed out about this– she wasn’t the one having a child after all!– but she still found herself overwhelmed.Not that she ever betrayed this, of course. Bex was an expert at smiling through the stress.

This afternoon was a welcomed distraction. Emily had stopped by to drop off something at the resort and the pair had ended up on her college’s website, analyzing the best way to organize her new dorm room.

“Are you sure there aren’t any bigger rooms available for freshmen?” Bex questioned, looking up from the perfectly to scale floor plan she was drawing up on the back of some scratch paper. “This room doesn’t seem big enough for two people to live in…”

haha but yeah same tbh i’m gARBAGE for the angst!!!!!! okay, so they’ve been bffs since foREVER which i love!!!! I feel like you rarely see one w/o the other!!! (which usually means trouble #whoops) Not that they always mean to, but I can just see them constantly getting into so many ridiculous situations/having lots of accidental adventures!

anyway, I don’t think that emily has ever really looked at nick romantically?? And even if she did, she’d be super hesitant b/c she wouldn’t want anything to ever change between them!!! not sure if you think she’d be able to suspect that he cares for her as more than a friend though??? if so, she’d definitely ignore it/pretends she doesn’t see b/c she doesn’t want to. like his bio says that he’d probably never tell her, but if he ever did try, I feel like she’d just quickly try to change the subject so he doesn’t get the chance, b/c even if she rejects him, then things will still be different b/c they will be awkward.

I think nick is probably the 1 person she can tell anything? He was definitely the only person that she told about secretly contacting her birth dad and probably got him to help her w/ researching where he lived and possible even what she should say when she finally reached out to him.

LIZZY !!! Srsly, who could not be absolutely in love with Maisie Williams anyway? I literally think that Emily could punch him in the face and he would be like ‘thank you i’ll cherish this moment forever’ lol, but i would really love to hear some of your thoughts on them! espec since i totally love to romantically wreck my characters so bring on the angst!!!

bex just freaking loves emily!!!!! and watching her grow up and basically getting to be her second mother– like she wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING in the world! she’s honestly probably prone to bursting into tears lately thinking that emily is going off to college XDD i am imagining bex is like the best/worst god mother of all time because she would kinda let emily get away with murder? but attempt to try to go about it the right way? like… em: *asks to do something that may be illegal/slightly dangerous/against some rules. bex: you should probably ask you mom. em: … bex: … em: … bex: … bex: but its probably fine.

but yess! she’d drop anything if emily showed up with homework questions or wanted to make a fort (honestly she probably just let her take over her office as a kid and, for like the only time in her life, was okay with it being a mess!) but i do think bex might (cautiously) talk to her about her dad! i don’t know if its been decided how emily found out about it, but honestly bex might’ve accidentally blabbed? like reminiscing about the past and she just happened to say a name… or even if not, it probably wouldn’t take much to get her talking about things.

haha I feel like everyone is acting like that re: her going to college and emily’s response is just to roll her eyes and say something witty/sarcastic smh

omg!!!!! tbh I feel like emily would definitely take advantage of that -- especially when she was younger!!! If she ever wanted to do something she was pretty sure that her mom would say no to, she’d just go to bex instead smh

haha okay cool! so yeah I do have to talk to Abby more about how much emily knew about her dad, but I do think she’d need to have gotten at least a name out of one of them and so that’s cool that it definitely could have been bex on accident at some point :)

omg!!!!! Emily is so!!!! incredibly happy that Alexis is back for the summer!!!! She’s missed her so much!! I’m not sure how long you think they’ve been best friends, btw? They are three years apart, which can be a lot when they were both little kids, but I can see it being somewhere between like six and eight years maybe??? Thoughts???

omg!!! I feel like ... it’s super mixed??? I think he probably frustrates her a lOT and they only agree on like 1 out of every 20 things they talk about, but she also does kind of like him ... and this frustrates her even more, b/c she does think he’s an ass (altho, admittedly, less of an ass than when she first met him but sTILL) And she does secretly likes hanging out w/ him sometimes, but she’s also v stubborn and she hated him at first and she’s gotTA stICK to iT!!! so it’s a mess!!

Emily 100% agress w/ Ria ;DDDD

Honestly, I feel like Emily is still ~figuring it out~ career wise, but I feel like she wouldn’t really want a corporate job. I feel like she’s probably gonna end up studying something re: the arts/humanities at college and then end up living in a cardboard box after! :)

emily, four years from now: I paid $120,000 to receive a four-year degree in a language that I already spoke.

but yeah anyway! I can see definitely having had done some volunteer work w/ ria or something tho especially while she was working on those college apps!!!

As far as what emily thinks of Ria ... I feel like, as a kid, she thought she was super stylish/perfect and honestly was def intimidated by her and probably thought she was a little intense, but I think she definitely would like her as she got to know her!!!! I can see where she might have started to think of Ria as like the ~cool~ aunt basically who she doesn’t see too often, but when she shows up they always go and do something fun together???

Emily is the coolest kid and Ria adores her!! She hopes, if she ever becomes a mom, that her kids will turn out as great as Emily has!! Anyway, I think she’s def assured her that if she’s ever looking for a recommendation or a job or anything that she need look no further bc they’d love to have her at Adler! That being said, idk what Emily’s ultimate aspirations are so obv that’s also a factor ;D

emily: who needs a dad when you have two moms??

so you know that bex was a huGE part of emily’s life!!! between moving to the island to help andrea w/ emily pLUS them opening the resort together, I feel like bex and emily were together a lot!!!! I’m sure Emily spent a huge amount of time at the resort as a kid and she would def go to bex for homework help/would probably sit w/ her at the front desk (which she probably used as a fort when she was little).

also, I feel like the one subject she always felt iffy to talk to w/ her mom was probably questions about her dad, so I can see her maybe talking to bex about him sometimes? that is, if you think she’d be okay w/ talking about him w/ emily?

She’s so happy that he’s here and that he’s a part of her life now! tbh contacting him was probably the scariest thing she’s ever done (both because she wasn’t sure how her mom would react haha ++ she wasn’t sure what kind of reaction to expect from him, either).

I do think she had ideas that her mom and josh would get back together and that they would be a happy family (she has def tried to parent trap them on at least 1 occasion lol) but she really just wants them to happy, even if it’s w/ other people. she’s just so happy that she has both of them!!!!!! <3

Abby!!!! Emily loves her mom!! so much!!!!!

I don’t think Emily has always appreciated all that Andrea has done for her as much as she does now, b/c I don’t think it really hit her until she turned sixteen and realized how very young that still is!!! And just imagined how brave and independent her mom had been to take on raising emily on her own!!!! emily is 100% convinced that she couldn’t do that, now, at eighteen and she just looks at her mom and is just like “wow!!!!”

anyway, she def does her best to make her mom proud ... but that being said, she definitely has gotten into her more than her share of trouble haha! I feel like, especially as a kid, she just wanted to have fun and sometimes she and her friends would get into scrapes and tbh she never meant any harm, she just wanted to have adventures!!!

Also, I feel like she’s always been very open and honest w/ her mom ... except for that 1 time she wrote her dad!!!! I think that was the 1 time she wasn’t sure how her mom would react tbh and she knew that she would regret doing it and so she did it b/f her mom could talk her out of it! how do you think andrea would have taken that btw??? also, what do you think she told emily about her dad, growing up, if anything?
