The Highwayman - A graphic adaptation

In 2020, as part of my Master degree thesis work, I illustrated an adaptation of Alfred Noyes’ poem The Highwayman. With it, I submitted a paper on developing an approach of visual narration through linguistic and literary perspectives. I presented both of them in September 2020 to an academic jury and a limited audience. Following this, I sold the few copies I printed.

This adaptation draws inspiration from literary theories regarding the role of blank space in storytelling and explores a concept I’ve named “narrative vagrancy”.

And now, two years later, I’ve decided to revise and perfect this adaptation to publish it. The series printed for my dissertation defense helped me refine this new version and make better choices in terms of printing to improve the reading experience.

The Highwayman is a 100 page book and many of these pages have been changed entirely to fit my current standards.

The Highwayman is drawn entirely in shades of charcoal and punctuated by touches of red which disappear entirely in the epilogue.

These last years, colours have become an essential component of my style so my intent has been to infuse these new illustrations with a coloured vibrancy only through grey tones.

Thoughts/Rant on Terry & Kreese’s Relationship in S4 of Cobra Kai

SPOILERS BELOW

Is anyone else angry about the fact that Terry gave Kreese up to the police? Or even how Kreese manipulated, guilt-tripped and exerted his dominance over Terry in this season.

In Karate Kid 3, we saw how much Terry loved Kreese. He dropped everything to get revenge for him, and constantly made it clear who he was doing all of this for - Kreese, the man who saved his life and his best friend.

But Kreese never held that over his head. He would often be humble while Terry would sing his praises, or allow Terry to take the lead when offering his students advice during the tournament. They worked together and never had problem with the other taking the lead.

So why now, do the writers bring Kreese’s manipulation into his relationship with Terry? Why would Terry betray his friend like that? What does he gain from taking control of Cobra Kai - the dojo they set up TOGETHER! The only answer I have to all of this is that the writers wanted drama, not character consistency.

The Terry and Kreese we saw in Karate Kid 3 would’ve never gotten to this point. Kreese would’ve never felt threatened by Terry, or exert his dominance on him. He would’ve never held his oath over his head, or guilt him into submission. They would’ve worked together because that’s what made them stronger and invincible. That’s how they survived the war and that’s how they’d take on this new challenge together.
