Amara had Nick to thank for being in where she was today. Her parents might be some of the worst kinds of people, she could have ended up in a different place or dead after being fished out of the sea. Their occasional meetings were something to look forward too, a bright spot in her typical doom and gloom weeks. She smiled as she approached, “Far too long in my opinion. Though, it was nice to see you at least out and about a the Centennial even if I didn’t get the chance to say hi.”

“Yeah—” He started, all too weary in his own endeavors before a sharp chuckle hit him. “Glad you made it out in one piece. What a nasty shit show that was.” He paused, looking over her, glad to at least have her town as of late. It seemed like people were scattering in flocks, which made sense, but he also had a bitter sense of faith in the town pulling itself together. “You doing alright?”

She was like a daughter to him, someone he could see grow up, thrive, and become her own person, but things fell apart before they even had a true chance to start it seemed. Being in Hawthorne though, he never imagined she’d come along, especially at what seemed to be the worst of times. It didn’t take long to flag her down, a soft smile reflecting before he said, “It’s...been a while, huh?”

The date went off without a hitch, everything absolutely perfect. One day he would need to buy a boat to have more days with Mariana like that, but now wasn’t the time. Life was changing rather quickly already and adjusting before he had anything else sounded like the smart thing to do. He arrived at the docks to return the keys, locating the man he’d spoke to before. “Hey, man. Here’s the keys back. I’m sad to be returning them back so soon.”

“Boat dates usually end really good or really bad, so I take it, yours went off well.” Nick muttered against the counter he had been cleaning, the bait and tackle area he had taken a liking to making sure it was kept orderly, before he took the keys off of the man. “Maybe one day you’ll own a beauty like her.”

Her eyes rolled, “Okay, maybe it was, that doesn’t mean you need to lump all of us together into one group. I’m sure there’s plenty of woman out there who’d come over here for the sole reason to get to know you.” Frannie’s original plans for him may have been deterred, but watching his reactions every time something new came out of her mouth. “You should feel flattered. As you mentioned earlier, there’s plenty of other people I could be flirting with. Instead, I’m spending my time with you.” A grin came across her face, a laugh starting to build. “Oh, it’s not going over my head at all. I’m having a great time watching you squirm, trying to sleep with you has been off the table since you turned me down the first time.”

“Oh, to get to know me, huh? Rich.” He let out a slight shrug. “I’m not looking for any trouble, so sorry to disappoint.” He raised a brow as he glanced over her once more. “Oh gosh, my mistake. Because you decided to spend time with me, I should feel flattered and excited that you went out of your way.” He feigned a sort of silly voice before he finally shook his head. “Squirm? It sounds like you’re just making up your own excuses now because you’re not used to being turned down. If that’s what you’re looking for kid, then fine. I appreciate the offer, alright? Is that what you’ve been wanting?”

“Right, assume that’s what every single woman wants when they talk to you.” She didn’t deserve to be lumped in with everyone else, not by her standards at least. “Look I didn’t come over here to fix you, I can barely fix myself. I came to flirt with a hot guy, potentially fuck you. Seeing as the latter is something completely out of the question, I’m sticking to the former.” Frannie shrugged, “With how you’re acting around people, I’d say that’s how you spend most of your time drinking.”

“Well, isn’t that what you wanted when you first approached me—Oh, sorry, when you first tipsily ‘ran into me’.” He said, marking air quotes with his fingers around the words, before giving her a heart laugh back. “Great, some kid half my age is trying to flirt with me. Doesn’t make it any better now that you’ve admitted you wanted to try and fuck me too.” He shook his head, unable to blur the lines between anything. “Look kid, I’ve tried letting you down easy, but even that seems to be going over your head. I’m not a very sociable guy, at least not to the standards you seem to want.”

“Is it sad to say this might not be the most confusing one I’ve had?” Anthony was confident in his feelings for Juliette, maybe not with saying them, but after their conversation he felt secure in what they both had going on. “You’re right, I should tell her and I will. Not sure when they’ll actually come out of my mouth, but she deserves to know. And I deserve to know if she feels the same way. What we have going right now is working for us, telling her how I feel could potentially ruin that.” Anthony started to chuckle, the pun hitting a little close to home. “Oh, I know how many fish there are in the sea. Trust me.” He stood up, the effects of the alcohol finally hitting him, a dizziness causing him to grab at the side of the bar from standing up to fast. “Well, this was a nice chat….sorry I don’t think I caught your name. But, I have a woman to find and take home.”

“Not sad. Just human.” Nick wanted the other guy to at least try to feel better about things, though it seemed like there were probably betters ways to go about that. “So long as you’re not hurting her, then just know that I approve.” He chuckled back, looking over the other as he stood, hoping he’d manage alright. “It’s Nick. And I hope it helps man. Good luck.”

“Are you one of those people who believes the apocalypse is going to happen? Preparing for the inevitable where you’ll wind up protecting a group of people who can’t do it themselves.” Frannie was actually enjoying the conversation they seemed to be having, turning her down or not. Her head shook, “No. My father does not frequent my thoughts when I’m trying to pick up guys. I see what I want and go after it, simple as that.” Her eyes ran over him again, suspecting their might be more potential he never quite tapped into since they’d never met before. “I’m not the best at cues, and my hopes are still there you’ll change your mind. You haven’t convinced me yet about how this is the most fun you can have.”

“I believe in just about anything, and it’s not unlikely around here anyways. At least I’ll survive for a bit.” Nick offered back, shrugging at the words. “Yeah, you and just about every other female that’s approached me tonight. It’s always ‘Hey, you look tortured and lonely, can I annoy for your ten minutes until I fix your broken soul?’ I’ve heard it all.” Nick went back to his drink, wetting his throat with the liquid before giving a short shake of his head. “Yeah, I got that much after the first time I told you I wasn’t interested. Drinking with tons of overdressed people? You’re right, I could be having more fun drinking at home, but that’s just sad and pathetic.”

Aurora chuckled and looked at him as he spoke. She ran a hand through her hair and twirled it a bit. “Well would you be willing to have a conversation with a pretty lady like me?” She asked as she leaned against the bar. “I tend to go after what I like. And you looked like something I might like.”

“If that’s what it’ll take to make you feel better about yourself, then sure.” Nick tried with a rather dull glance while only half chuckling, exasperated already. “Do I then? Guess that makes sense for you, being the overly confident and determined woman you seem to be.”

“I look like you could use this,” she offered him the drink, not sure if it was her best approach. She couldn’t stand anymore small talk with a co-worker and he looked like he couldn’t either. “These things are a lot. I don’t think I could get through it without one.”

At the drink, he lifted a brow while turning towards the woman, a short chortle releasing from his throat. “This, and about a million more.” He muttered through a brief note before settling his hand around the glass. “Thanks. You got one for you?” He asked back, adding quickly, “Frankly, I don’t even belong at these things.”

“Look, I know Twinkies never expire but that doesn’t mean you should keep them.” He might have been turning her down, but Frannie wasn’t going to walk away quite yet. Finding some joy in the conversation anyways. There would be time after this to find someone to go home with if she really wanted. “Please, why waste my time on boys when there’s a real man right in front of me? You should really learn how to have a bit more fun. When was the last time you really let loose and had a good time?”

“Cute. But trust me when I say that it’s never a bad thing to keep a stock of canned goods around. Might come in handy one day.” He shrugged, easily keeping up with her and having no problem in his retort as he offered her a half-shrug. “A real man? Seriously? I could be your dad and that doesn’t...bother you?” He paused as he finally fully turned to face her, giving her a once over glance, and letting a cheap chortle leave. “This is me having a good time. Drinks all night, a half pound of food soaking it all up, and a young girl trying to hit on me, even when I’ve politely turned her down. I’m afraid it doesn’t get any looser than that.”

Anthony nodded, sitting up to be in his best form as he waited for the other to give him some insight. Maybe this would help him with the feelings he had, although telling Jules after the conversation they had wasn’t an option right now. He stared intently, taking in every word the other spoke, trying to match it up with how he felt. “Thankfully, I don’t think I’ve lost it quite yet. She didn’t exactly tell me she didn’t want to be with me, just for the moment right now she wanted some space. Except she doesn’t want to put labels on it even though we’re not seeing anyone else. It’s all a bit confusing.” As he tried to explain, Anthony only became more confused himself. “Open and honest about it, might not be so bad. You never know, society seems to progressing rather well.”

“Huh. Sounds confusing as hell. But what relationship isn’t?” He shrugged off as he waved down another drink to be poured, before sliding it on over to his new friend. “Sometimes all you can do it take a risk, lay everything out on the line, and if it doesn’t work, start all over. You also have to ask yourself what you want, because if a relationship ain’t working for you, then you’re never gonna put the effort into it.” Nick gave a hollow sigh, not sure he signed up to be anybody’s therapist tonight, but somehow it seemed to work that way. “Being truthful about yourself is always a good thing. And who knows, maybe you’ll find something that works for both of you. If not, there’s plenty of fish in the sea.”

She rolled her eyes, needing another drink right about now. “God, kid? Really? I am far from being a kid. Plus, who says I want to leave with a bumbling idiot? They’re hardly going to make it past the door if I tried to leave with them. On the other hand, you are very much not a bumbling idiot, which is exactly what I need.”

“To me you’re not. I’ve got food in my cabinets that are probably older than you, kid.” Nick uttered back rather aimlessly, kicking back slightly as he leaned in his chair, trying to rouse up any desire to at least let the kid down easy. “And, sure I’m not bumbling idiot, but I’m telling you, there’s plenty of others around here who’d be a lot better suited for someone like you. I’m not into that sort of thing. Thanks, but no thanks.”

Everything always felt black and white, no room for a gray area when things were complicated. He loved Jules, but saying it meant something absolute, and if she didn’t love him, what did it leave him with? A love for someone who didn’t love him back, but what if she did? Then it seemed to only get more complicated rather than easier. “What does it mean to you?” He asked, trying to gain some new perspective. “Okay, I get that. I don’t want to lose the one I have now, but what if someone else comes along that I also love. It doesn’t mean I love the first any less.”

“What does love mean to me?” Nick promptly questioned back, a hearty chuckle echoed out of him as he set his glass aside and turned to face the other other fully, giving him an expression of doubt. “You’re serious? I don’t know. I thought I had it at one time, turns out I was wrong. Even then, it’s something unconditional. Should be boundless, but people don’t seem to think so. And hell, it should make you feel like the happiest guy in the world when you have it, and the worst son of a bitch if you lose it. That’s what it means to me at least.” Nick narrowed his eyes onto the other, letting him reel it all in. “Sounds like you just need to be honest with anybody and everybody you fall in love with then, or else you could wind up losing both.”

“Has anyone ever told you you ask to many questions?” She chuckled, standing up straight again as if nothing were wrong. Although, he might be on to something with her intoxication. “Okay, okay. You caught me. I purposely stumbled to have a reason to talk to you, which is certainly not a crime with the way you look.”

“Funny, I guess I just like to know my stuff, especially about the people that try to talk to me.” Nick stated back, looking back at the girl, unamused with his rather judgemental expression. “Yeah, you and some other lady around here. Look kid, I’m not the guy you want to talk to, especially in a room full of bumbling idiots where any one of them would be much happier in this situation.”

The mermaid giggled as she felt the alcohol hitting her. She smiled as she walked around wanting someone to talk to. She saw a male with a brutish shape and dark hair. SHe fixed her hair really quick and pushed her tits up a bit and sighed. “Hello tall dark and handsome.” She said to herself before walking over to him. She tapped him on the shoulder and bit her lip again. “Why i couldn’t help but notice you from across the room and thought i’d come over and make conversation.”

At the first tap on the shoulder, Nick found himself pulling back a bit to turn to see who needed him, something he couldn’t be bothered by most of the time. “I’m not a big conversationalist.” He muttered back slowly as he looked to the other, before sipping back at his drink. “You must have some eye though to notice me among the rest of this crowd.”

She didn’t let go right away, looking the man up and down. “Oh, I am perfect,” skipping over the comment of being called a kid, the age difference no concern of hers. “If it’s necessary, I have no problem doing it. The perks of wearing them practically 24/7.” 

It was easy enough to Nick to question the other’s motives, as he took his own step back now that the girl was stable. “Mhmm.” He grunted with a rather dull expression. “So, someone who practically lives in their heels is stumbling around here. You must be very intoxicated or think I’m just stupid looking, huh?”

“Seven billion people? Are you serious?” A million more questions ran through his mind, head leaning on the cool counter as they raced past. Did that number include the underwater population? Why couldn’t he have just told her and moved on? Anthony lifted his head, leaning his elbow on the counter as he rested his head in his hand. “If so many people are asking this question, how has no one come up with an answer? Better yet, why is monogamy somehow the proper way to go?”

“Deadly.” Nick muttered off, finally taking a glance over at the fella, letting a short stifled laugh leave him as he saw the other’s expression. It seemed he may have been a little bit over his own head. “Because love is a difficult thing to understand. Plus, it means different things to different people. Not exactly something you can scientifically test.” Lifting a brow, Nick finished off his drink before adding, “If you find love, you gotta keep it. Some people take that and think that they need to stop looking too.”
