During the process of updating the designs for Witchcart and the Witchcarters, Aaron Hammerstrom made some spritework based on Tails' Skypatrol to see how designs would work at that scale.
Tumblr media
As far as I know Aaron Hammerstrom has not uploaded these in high quality anywhere, thus I've attempted to recreate these and upscaled them to view properly. (Note: Some colors may be off, I've based the colors mostly off of the ripped sprites from Spriters Resource but Hammerstrom must have fiddled with the colors a bit because some of the colors are a bit different).
An interesting thing to note is that while Witchcart, Hockewulf and Bearenger's faces were left relatively intact, Carrotia's face is a total resprite. In fact, 95% of it is totally original save for the bow.

These Sonic PICT artworks always have a reference to Big the Cat in them, whether it be small little nods to him or Big himself appearing somewhere in the background/foreground.
Given that these take place in the Classic timeline, Big's role of easter egg references has been delegated to Froggy!

Some interesting things to note here. While Yui Karasuno's anniversary art doesn't necessarily indicate what's canon or not, I think a few things that are important to take note are how designs are adapted.
We know that Classic Chaotix seems to be on gag order in the Classic Sonic universe. not having any appearances despite being the 2nd most known characters after the core four and Eggman + Metal. Well thanks to Yui Karasuno we get to see how Espio would look like if he were to be illustrated in the NeoClassic style! It's honestly not that far off from his appearance in Chaotix/StF save for his rounder head shape and larger eyes!
We also know that despite the IDW team figuring out that Tails Doll has an orb for an antennae based on his art (and not his in-game model) in Sonic R, the JP team at Sega still chooses to illustrate him with a diamond. We saw from the Sonic Superstars Artbook that the reference sheet included has his antennae as a diamond, and in fact the very same reference sheet might be what Karasuno used to illustrate Tails Doll. Aaron Hammerstrom mentions that back when they were producing the IDW Sonic 30th anniversary book, they were only given a low quality render to use as reference.
Tumblr media
As of now, it's currently up in the air whether Tails Doll is meant to have an orb or a diamond for an antenna.

Metal Amy artwork from the Sonic Superstars Digital Deluxe Artbook. Eyes edited to be teal instead of red since I feel that having Metal Amy and Metal Tails sharing red eyes with Metal Sonic kinda made Knuckles an outlier. I picked teal over blue since her ears were already blue.

Analyzing the IDW Sonic Issue #24 cover
Cause it actually gives us a pretty good insight on which characters will/allowed to appear in this series! (or at least I assume)
Ok so just to give some general context, Ian Flynn has said in a previous interview that classic era characters won’t appear. IDW Sonic, (at least for now, is strictly Modern Era)
So we can expect to not see these following characters in the IDW Sonic comic-verse for a good while.
Classic Versions of Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Vector, Espio, Charmy, Eggman and Metal Sonic
Segasonic the Hedgehog (Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel)
Sonic the Fighters (Honey the Cat, Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Bear)
Sonic Triple Trouble (Fang the Sniper/Nack the Weasel)
Tails’ Sky Patrol (Carrotia, Focke-wulf, Bearenger, Witchcarter)
Sonic R (Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll)
Silver Sonic
Battle Kukku Empire (XV, Speedy and Doctor Fukurov)
Chaotix (Heavy and Bomb)
But in IDW Sonic Issue #3, Sonic mentions The Hooligans, so at the very least they can mention the existence of classic characters.
Tumblr media
But this restriction of characters does beg the questions though? What is and isn’t off limits in IDW Sonic?
Apart from Classic Universe, there are three other universes that come from the sonic games. Boom Universe, (though quite loosely-considered as a universe) Storybook Universe and (a more sketchy, loosely considered as a universe) Chronicles Universe.
In the case of Boom!Sonic, given the design of Sonic and the rest of the cast, we can outrule Sticks the Badger and Lyric from appearing, not sure if they’re allowed to reference them though.
In the case of Storybook!Sonic, they’re allowed to reference the storybook games (as shown in IDW Sonic Issue #16). However using characters such as Shahra and Merlina is also unclear (but I’d guess they won’t appear).
Tumblr media
In the case of Chronicles!Sonic, given the whole Ken Penders thing, I bet that Shade and the rest of the characters won’t even be given an allusion to.
Well how about one-off characters? Characters that appeared once or a few times in Sonic’s adventures?
Well, this is where this cover helps! See, as of the current issue, IDW Sonic Issue #22, a generous amount of characters has appeared.
The Main Cast (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy)
Returning Cast from Forces (Wisps, Vector, Espio, Charmy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Silver)
Antagonists from Forces (Eggman, Metal Sonic, Orbot, Cubot)
IDW exclusive new characters (Tangle, Whisper and her former Squad, Rough, Tumble, Jewel, Dr. Starline and others)
Returning cast not in Forces (Cream, Vanilla, Cheese, Chocola, Gemerl, Blaze, The Babylon Rouges (In a spin-off comic))
Returning Villains not in Forces (Zeti)
That’s almost everybody we see in this cover… except for a few characters.
That’s right, some previously unseen characters like Big the Cat, Froggy, and Marine the Raccoon of all characters, are seen again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Big’s case, it isn’t as jarring. He was bound to appear sometime, being apart of Team Rose, appearing in Sonic Adventure, his role in the Sonic games is far too big to skim over. In fact we actually may have an idea on where he is in the current arc. In IDW Sonic issue #22, page 5, we see a speech bubble, “Froggy?! Where are you?!”.
Tumblr media
While Big is not explicitly shown in the actual issue, he is most well known for this phrase and his love and concern for Froggy, his pet frog. This suggests he may be present in the Restoration HQ…
Tumblr media
… His fate, however, whether he got infected by the metal virus or not is undetermined.
Tumblr media
After scanning the room for people who has not been infected Gemerl stated that every one in there are already in different states of infection. So unless Big has somehow escaped (which to be honest, his character seems to be the type to pull surprises)…
Tumblr media
… Big is already infected and left behind with Vector, Charmy and Vanilla.
Now for Marine. Blaze originally came to Sonic’s dimension because she felt something was wrong.
Tumblr media
She is introduced to Tangle as a princess from another dimension who wields the Sol Emeralds. She eventually joins the fight against Neo Metal Sonic and taking back Angel Island.
Tumblr media
At the end of IDW Sonic Issue #12, she says her work is done and decides goes back to the Sol Dimension.
Tumblr media
In the Sonic 2019 Annual Issue, there is a story that involves Blaze visiting Silver’s Garden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And according to David Mariotte, the 2019 issue takes between issues #12 and #15. So Blaze was still in Sonic’s universe until at most before the Metal Virus arc started.
Tumblr media
In the Metal Virus arc, Blaze is absent, most likely already having returned to the Sol Dimension. So with the appearance of Marine, does Blaze return back to Sonic’s dimension in this arc? Does she bring Marine along? Why?
And the presence of the Babylon Rogues and Jewel in the cover coupled with the solicitation description for IDW Sonic Issue #24:
“The Last One Out" As the Metal Virus spreads, Tangle’s hometown of Spiral Hill Village stands as one of the last strongholds of the uninfected. Sonic, Tangle, and the remaining heroes of the Restoration make a stand, but will it be enough?
Tumblr media
And the fact that the last time the Rogues and Jewel were last seen was during the jewel heist at Mineral Museum suggests that they will appear there once more.
Does the appearance of Marine, who’s only appearance in the game series is Sonic Rush Adventure, and the Babylon Rogues, who only appeared in the Sonic Riders spin-off games, suggest that other one-off characters will reappear in this continuity? Like Tikal and Chaos from Adventure, Elise from 06 and Yacker from Colors?
Speculation:
Yeah remember when I said that Big is the type to pull surprises? I bet that in a later issue it will be revealed that Big got on the ship safely. However, Froggy is infected, Big, who cares for Froggy too much, couldn’t bare to leave him behind. I mean, that one throwaway dialogue could be a clue for what’s to come. He compromises the safety of the ship, spiraling the mood of the heroes down further. I think that someone of note is gonna get infected, other than Big. And that would send Cream’s mood to be even more desolate.
It can’t be Tails cause he’s working on the cure, he’s got plot protection cause he needs to bounce back from his mistake (dropping the cure, and it’s incomplete). Sonic is plot protected as well and Knuckles is on Angel Island. Espio needs to avenge the Chaotix so he has a flimsy plot shield. Tangle is needed because something is definitely gonna happen in Spiral Hill, where Jewel is currently in, so she’s protected.
I think it’s Amy. Just think about it, she’s one of the main 4, she’s the head of Restoration, she’s been doing so well, handling everything that comes at her, She is the face of the restoration and who many people rely on. She is Cream’s role model. And she promised Vanilla that she’d protect Cream. When you take her away, everything seems more hopeless and desolate, one of the main pillars of the sonic franchise has crumbled, and now the metal virus seems more dangerous than ever.
It can also be Whisper, Whisper and Tangle’s spinoff series ends exactly before issue #23 will come out. And in the spinoff, one of it’s main themes is the friendship that Whisper and Tangle have. They’ve become close to rely on each other. And as much as I hate to think it, Whisper may be “fridged” to boost Tangle’s desire to save her friends in issue #23. A setup for issue #24, where the metal virus goes to Spiral Hill, where Jewel is.
Now why am I mentioning Cream’s role here? Well it’s because Cream is the hidden star of this arc. Think about it. Charmy’s infection is the catalyst for Sonic to check up on Cream and her family. Gemerl’s main purpose is to protect Cream, and he is currently the protector of the uninfected, given that all other “protector” characters, are currently unavailable (Sonic is infected, Shadow has turned, Silver is busy, Blaze is not yet there, Omega is ripped, Vector is infected, Amy will soon turn). Chocola and Cheese, her friends, compromised Tails’s cure. Vanilla turned in front of her eyes. So many of the events are centered around Cream, and there will definitely be one more catalyst for her big role.
Enter Marine and Blaze. Cream is friends with Blaze, finding friendship with one another in Sonic Rush. And in the cover, we can see Cream holding hands with Marine. There will definitely be an interaction between the two of them considering that
All characters in the cover are posed in a way where all interactions have meaning. (Babylon Rogues are together, Chaotix are together, Dark are together, etc.) Why pose Cream and Marine like this when they’ve never interacted before?
Both are related to Blaze in a way, mayhaps a humorous introduction may happen between the two “Oh Hello Ms. Blaze!” “I’m her real bestfriend!” etc.
If Amy does turn, Cream, for once in her life will be alone, Amy is gone, Vanilla, Cream and Chocola have turned, and if I’m right, Big is already infected as well. Even the more minor friends she has like Sonic is infected, Tails is busy, Knuckles is MIA and Vector (Sonic Riders), has already turned. Blaze will be the only person left, a sister figure that Cream can cling onto.
And as a final catalyst, A few more people will get infected, whether it will be Tails, or Sonic or Blaze, I can’t guess. But what I will guess is that Cream will definitely have a big role in this arc’s ending.
Aurgh! I’m just so excited for the upcoming issues, and seeing this cover definitely made my brain churn!!

WIP Sonic Drift 2 Mockup
In the Sonic Drift 2 Japanese manuals, there are a bunch of art of the playable cast that is never seen anywhere else, not even in the game! There exists no HD versions of the pixel arts, and it’s quite a shame too considering that it seems to be of high quality, even better than the ending scenes from the first game.
I’m currently in the process of making mockups of what if could have looked like if these images were used on the game gear or genesis. I’ll post a process after i post the final mockup.

I don’t think origins matter too much in terms of using the characters especially since:
Mean Bean Machine was a Puyo puyo reskin and it still made an appearance in Sonic Mania. And Mean Bean was a reskin, Tails Skypatrol is an actual game that isnt based on anything published.
The game gear designs were made to replace the old disney designs. If I’m right Bearenger used to be Pete and Witchcarter used to be Mizrabel.
And while I do understand the “ Penders ruined everything when it comes to Archie stuff”, (fuck penders am i right?), the witchcarter redesigns were made well after the reboot.
Tumblr media
They were made by Ian Flynn (who works on IDW Sonic right now)
Tumblr media
And refined later on into what we know now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Images taken from the sonic wiki
So Penders should have no jurisdiction over that.
I’m not sure on how much is affected in the Archie-Penders deal is, or how much of Archie are other Sonic media allowed to reference, but the characters themselves are free to use, given that they come from Sonic games. And considering the fact that sonic games CAN reference other pieces of media (tail’s astraphobia from Sonic OVA and “Sonic Sez” from AoSTH), the witchcarters are allowed to appear in games.
Now in terms of designs, the redesigns were made for the modern era, (think about mighty and ray’s archie designs compared to their mania designs. The Hooligans and Honey were also redesigned with more modern proportions.) And given the current status on the whole “Classic Sonic universe and Modern Sonic universe are separate” and “Mighty and Ray are the first classic-exclusive characters” situation, we won’t be seeing the archie redesigns anytime soon (at least not in their current iteration.)
Now, we have two probable scenarios if they ever choose to bring back the witchcarters:
The best case scenario is they can use/reference the archie redesigns for a new sonic mania-like game while the worst case scenario is they have to use new redesigns.
What about the rest of the Forgotten Sonic Characters?
With Sonic Mania Plus comes two returning characters, Mighty and Ray! After 20+ years they’ve finally made their comeback ever since their debut in the segasonic arcade game! Even the Hooligans have made a semi-cameo appearance in the form of the Heavy Magician’s illusions in Mirage Saloon Zone! Since Mania is a celebration of every Sonic game ever it was nice to experience these old characters revitalized back to life!
But with the revitalization of old characters, what does that say about the state of the rest of the forgotten sonic characters? Will they ever see the light of day again? Do some have a more chance of appearing again? Or are they doomed to obscurity? Let’s review the list, starting from when they were introduced and their last major appearance! Starting with:
Sonic CD’s Rosy the Rascal (1993) Latest appearance Sonic R (1996)
I’m sure all of us were disappointed when she wasn’t playable in mania plus. But! With her appearance in the christmas special, she may become playable in the next sonic mania game! Or at least a cameo other than an Amy Doll.
Sonic Triple Trouble’s Fang the Sniper (1994), last appearance Sonic Fighters (1996) and you know what? Let’s throw in Bean and Bark (1996), last appearance Fighters Megamix (1996)
“Hey! What’s the big idea! We just saw them in Mania! You even said they were in Mania!” Well that’s where you’re kinda wrong kid. I said semi-cameo. The hooligans did not actually appear in Sonic Mania, at least not in their actual forms. Right, remember those three were just illusions by the magician. While those were references sure, those aren’t actually the hooligans. While their appearance in a next game like mania is less likely (given they were mirage saloon’s gimmick, and they’ve already had their representation) I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t at least one reference to them in the near future.
Next up! Knuckle’s Chaotix’s Chaotix! (1995) with Espio’s last appearance in the Sonic Fighters (1996)
“Uh hey, what gives? The Chaotix crew have already appeared in modern games, they were just in Forces and Vector is in TSR! what are you on?” Well what I’m on, you see reader, is on Iizuka’s bullshit! You see since their first modern appearance on Sonic Heroes, Takashi Iizuka has stated on record that the modern chaotix crew is not the same characters as the ones in the 32x game. You see when development on the chaotix game was shifted from sonic team to another developer, the story hadn’t been written yet. Same with the characters characterization. That’s why you have a sophisticated 16 year old Charmy. Hot headed detective Espio. Pacifist nomad Mighty. God-fearing, music-loving Vector! While some of the character traits were carried over (like charmy being the glue that held the chaotix together, mighty is still a pacifist in mania, vector still has his headphones, while espio’s detective shtick got applied to the whole crew), they were basically new characters. Even though the chaotix game was viewed noncanon for years, with countless references to it in sonic mania, it seems that sega is much more willing to accept the chaotix as it was. It is very likely that this may get retconned (given how bullshit some of Iizuka’s statements on plotline are), they even might actually cameo in the next mania game if ever!
Tails Skypatrol’s Witchcarters! (1995)
Finally some actual forgotten characters! Bet you didn’t know they exist huh! Well you probably do if you’re reading this list, but i digress. Introducing the witchcarters, Carrotia the Rabbit, Fockewulf the Wolf, Bearenger the Bear and Witchcarter. These characters served as one-off antagonists and henchmen in this spinoff game, where they were left ignored for around 20 years until Archie Sonic’s Eggman’s Dozen arc where they were given redesigns to fit the modern era. They are the less iconic of the two groups of antagonists that Tails has had to fight. But they are very likely to appear in the next mania-like game.
Tails Adventure’s Battle Armada (1995)
Oof another Game Gear title but one that’s more memorable than skypatrol! Along with a metroid-style gameplay, we are introduced to the battle armada! Speedy, his father and Dr. Fukurov are a few of the notable casts introduced here! For around 20 years they were ignored until Archie Sonic (again). They are given a much bigger role compared to the witchcarters! The idea of Speedy as a rival to Tails like metal sonic is to sonic, is such an interesting concept to me! they have a greater chance of appearing in the next mania like game as compared to skypatrol!
Sonic the Fighter’s Honey the Cat! (1996)
Yeahhh, ok let’s be blunt. I love honey the cat. But she probably won’t appear in a game any time soon. Here’s why: She’s basically the mobian version of an already existing character (candy from fighting vipers). She’s a hacked character in the arcade version, removed from the gcn port and an easter egg in the latest port. She was only limited to cameos in the comic before finally debuting properly in the sonic the fighters arc in archie sonic. While Sega has definitely been more lenient with her, unless there’s another fighting game that will come out, honey won’t be appearing any time soon. (and if she does I really hope they use the rest of the fighting vipers cast too, Pane the Boar exists now! and it’s not like anyone’s using the IP! I’d like it if they just,,,, retooled fighting vipers and it’s characters for a sonic fighting game spinoff without sonic characters haha)
Sonic R’s Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll (1996)
Sonic R introduced the counterfeit counterparts to the other 2/3s of team hero. Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll. While I bet they were only created to fill out the roster, we can’t deny that their designs are cool. I don’t want to rule them out because they’re 3d characters since Bean and Bark made 2d appearances in mania, but it’s a mystery on what kind of role they’ll fulfill. Metal Sonic’s first appearance in CD was explicitly clear that he was your rival, someone to beat. These two’s appearances are kinda shoehorned as someone you have to race with but there’s no backstory. Unless there’s racing challenge in the next mania game or these characters are retooled to being a miniboss, they probably won’t appear in a major role in the next mania game, if they ever appear it’d probably be as a background cameo. (which is a shame!)
Sonic Adventure DX and Adventure 2 Battle’s Tikal and Chaos! (1999) latest appearance Tikal-Sonic Runners (2015) Chaos(illusion)-Forces (2017)
Finally we’re out of the classic era and into the adventure era! The adventure era is regarded by a lot as either a. a transitional era between classic to modern sonic, or as a part of the modern sonic era. either way this is where tikal and chaos’s first and playable appearances were made. Now this is a weird case since Chaos came from the Master Emerald and Tikal is a ghost. In their ending you can see them hanging with the chao. Ever since then they’ve been MIA. While I thought they went back into the emerald, it seems that it’s actually questionable what happened to their fate. Will we ever get to see them again? Well this is where things get pretty dicey here on out. These characters don’t have “Classic” immunity, meaning they dont have the possibility to appear in the next mania-like game since they aren’t classic. Unless we have another storyline regarding the echidna colony (unlikely due to penders) then we probably wont see tikal and chaos in a major way any time soon.
Sonic Shuffle’s Void and Lumina (2000)
With character designs looking more akin to NiGHTS into Dreams than a sonic characters, void and lumina are the more different looking characters. Opting for a more fairy look instead. Sonic Shuffle is a board game somewhat akin to mario party. These characters were one-off characters, and i guess that’s it. Unless sega makes another board game using the mainline sonic universe (not storybook sonic) then we won’t see these two again anytime soon.
Sonic Hero/Advance 3/Battle’s Vanilla and Chocola and Emerl/G-merl (2003-2004)
Woof, that’s a lot of characters. So let’s tackle them one by one shall we? Vanilla is Cream’s mother. Kidnapped ala princess peach style in the advance games, she is cream’s driving force to join sonic’s team into taking eggman down. Likewise, Chocola is Cheese’s brother. These two chao are pets of Cream. Chocola is Cream’s driving force to join team Amy into taking down eggman in sonic heroes. Emerl was a robot that died in Sonic Battle and Gemerl is the reconstructed gizoid from emerl’s remains, after the events of advance 3, gemerl lives with cream and vanilla, often portrayed in the comics as the bodyguard for the two. So how likely are they to appear? Well not anytime soon by the looks of it. They only appear if Cream has a heavy role in the story, and with each passing installment cream has been getting lesser roles. I like to think of Cream as the “next sonic”. She has the drive and the heart to become the succeeding hero. I’d love for her to get her own series of games where she is the hero. But unless she gets more roles or she gets her own spinoffs (not likely), these three wont appear anytime soon.
Sonic Riders (2006) latest appearance for storm-Sonic Free Riders (2010) for Jet and Wave-Olympics (2020)
Sonic Riders introduced three babylon rogues. Jet was introduced as Sonic’s rival when it came to races, a title loosely held by metal and shadow (metal was created to be sonic’s rival at everything and shadow was conceptualized as being an antithesis to sonic, jet is the first to be his rival in speed only). Given the nature of these games it’s actually a surprise as to why they didn’t appear in team sonic racing, or in their two previous racing games. Jet and Wave appeared in the olympics 2020 recently but storm has been mia lately. When the next racing game does come out and when they expand their roster we might see the babylon rogues debut in some sweet rides!
Sonic 06′s Elise
Unless it’s in a remake Elise has no chance of returning back due to the whole nature of 06 (and it’s storyline)
Sonic and the Secret Rings and the Black Knight’s Shahra, Merlinus, Caliburn
Not likely given that they are one-off characters in a storybook.
Sonic Rush Adventure’s Eggman Nega and Marine (2007)
I’d really love for Marine to appear again. Eggman Nega appeared in Rivals, he even appears in the olympic games, why can’t marine appear again? Sadly, unless we get a game that involves the sol dimension, these two are out of the question.
Sonic Chronicles’s entire cast (2008)
Haha. no. Most well-known as the first rpg-like game that involves the sonic characters. This game introduces Shade along with other characters. However due to the Penders lawsuit, these characters are now off limits, even to sega. this may also be the reason why we have not seen gemerl again.
Sonic Unleashed’s Lah and Chip (2008)
Chip is the Light Gaia and Lah was made for the special. We probably won’t see these characters again despite having the best writing so far.
Sonic Colors’s Yacker (2010)
Yacker didn’t fare well compared to the rest of his wisp friends. and honestly? I don’t feel too bad. while he may appear if sonic ever does need a flagship representation for the wisps, i doubt he’ll have another big role like in colors.
Sonic Lost World’s Zeti (2013)
Cause let’s face it, only Zavok and Zazz are in the limelight recently. The Zeti are a very polarizing addition to the sonic cast. they don’t have the same rep as the wisps, yet they’re designs are a bit too unique to just be left behind again. What sega’s doing now though is a bit disappointing. Half ass shoe horns into plots. Well at least for TSR, which is a racing game spin-off. We also saw this in forces (along side chaos and shadow of all people). I just hope this isn’t a trend that persists. Either make a proper plot or don’t include the character at all sega. as to when we’ll see them again, that is up to sega. this is a bit of a cloudy are cause sega doesn’t seem to be afraid to use them, but for some reason they arent too confident either.
Sonic Boom’s Sticks.(2014)
Unless There’s another boom game or Sticks is redesigned to modern standards as opposed to boom standards, we’ll probably not see her again. which is disappointing.
Sonic Forces’s Infinite and OC character (2017)
They aren’t really forgotten since it’s only been 2 years. But infinite’s basically been forgotten already! He has no appearances in other games outside forces. Not even in team sonic racing, you’d think he’d be a shoe in, but he isnt! You’d think the make your own avatar would be something that’d be implemented from everygame onward (ngl it was the only good thing about forces) but it’s also isnt seen in tsr. which seems like wasted opportunities!

What if Sonic Drift was a Genesis game?
Hey! I made another mock-up title screen this time of the very first racing game that Sonic got, Sonic Drift!
You know, one of the many reasons why this game flopped was because it was one of those racing games where the road appears from the horizon. But given the limited screen space of the Game Gear and Master System, you could barely see in front of you. And in a game called Sonic DRIFT you kinda needed to see where the turns are and all that.
So what if it was made for the Genesis? Not only is it processing on stronger hardware, it’s also projecting through a bigger CRT Television! It’s nice to wonder what might have been, who knows! Maybe in another universe, Sonic’s first venture into racing spin-offs might have been successful.

It always felt weird whenever they were referred to as team sonic. Like there are two other people there you know? A whole ass Tails and Knuckles Exist.
Team Sonic Heroes was tacky, in fact every mention of “sonic heroes” in Sonic Heroes felt so shoehorned in. Like Eggman’s opening line “Dear Sonic Heroes” or Sonic’s Ending line “Cause we’re Sonic Heroes!” That’s like saying “We’re Jordan Heroes” or “We’re Eggman Villains!”
Team Heroes was just like, the perfect name for the three you know? It’s less subtle like Amy’s “Team Rose” situation and it’s a perfect partner to “Team Dark” like Hero Story and Dark Story in Sonic Adventure 2?

Process on Super forms for the Classic Cast!
Tumblr media
So I read somewhere that the reason why Super Sonic's fur is yellow is because Blue is an inversion of Yellow. Same goes for Shadow, his fur is bluish black so he got a yellowish white when he turned super in Sonic Adventure 2. I'm not so sure about the validity of that but it was nice to keep that in mind.
Obviously this isn’t the case since in Sonic Heroes, super Knuckles and Tails just had an aura-like shield when fighting against Metal Overlord. And in Mania they just retained their colors except glowing.
Anyway, I wanted to see what they would look like if they followed the same inverted color scheme, and I might as well do the other characters that appeared in the genesis games. So first we gotta invert their colors and....

Euch! Gross. They look freaky, and off... In Shadow’s case when he turned super, he retained his red stripes. Let's follow that example and fix that up by reversing the inversion in parts that aren't their skin/fur. (Accent places, Clothes, and Accessories.)
I forgot to Screencap the next step but the next problem was that it still looked off... If you pay close attention you’ll notice that black turns white and vice versa. For example, the highlight on sonic’s fur (light blue) turned into a dark yellow, the same case goes for the shadows in sonic’s fur (dark blue turned light yellow). This means that even if we reverse the color inversion, they’d still look off. We can fix this by applying the new light yellows and switching it with the dark yellows. Dark Yellows now take the Dark Blue spots and same goes for the highlights. what we end up with is the result below.

Much better. Hmm.. the vibrance of these colors look off. Knuckles looks too bright to the point where you can’t see the highlights while Amy and Sonic look too dark, too murky. Let's just adjust some settings.

Voila! They look much better!
Also Oops! I just noticed I forgot Tail's Tails. Anyway, they don't look a hundred percent perfect but they look good enough for me! It’s nice to imagine a universe where this was the standard to super forms (or at the very least, shiny forms haha!)
My personal favorites are Knuckles’ and Vector’s! I’m calling these forms “Crystal Guardian” and “Toxic Sewage”, How about you? Which ones are your favorites?
I also did this on the Mania Cast with Mighty, Ray and the Hooligans!
