New crackish theory that the reason why the Ohtori boy’s uniform looks so bad is to ensure the popularity and appeal of the Student Council over Joe Average Ohtori student, thus bringing more students, mostly young girls, into easier range of his preying. Bonus points for actively grooming the objects of mass appeal (particularly notable with Utena, Saionji, and Touga, all of whom have troupes of fangirls) to make it even easier to prey on those around them if he so chooses

Thinking about the doll merch saying Utena doesn’t feel like herself when he’s not wearing men’s clothing and how in the bodyswap episode she just wore what Anthy usually wears and the Gender Hell that must’ve been going on there on top of all of the other identity crisis shit. I just wish the bodyswap episode wasn’t so unserious because there is so much potential there. In my mind palace it’s a commentary on what makes someone who they are and an expression of Anthy’s identity being wrapped in whatever role she’s playing at the time because defense mechanism is gonna defense mechanism (TO ME. TO ME) and also finally catching a break while Utena goes through Identity Crisis Hell because she’s in the wrong body and the wrong uniform and it’s all wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong and there’s nothing he can do about it other than wait out Nanami’s trip to India.

Utena’s tablecloth dress trick may be Shoujo Bullshittery but what if it wasn’t. What if (for plot and symbolism reasons) Wakaba was her test dummy as she practiced the tablecloth trick over and over but only did it for real on Anthy because Wakaba was never the intended target. What then

The way Kozue and Nanami are never shown looking at each other in the same frame without a visual barrier between them vs how important it is when Utena and Anthy make eye contact…screaming crying sobbing on the floor by all rights and parallels they should have a connection but they never get the chance to make one

I think it's a sign of good media when you have to reread or rewatch it to get the full experience. First time is for getting your brain blasted by the story and being confused second time is for knowing who's who and what's what and willingly getting your brain blasted again.

I decided to rewatch Episode 26 (Miki’s Nest Box (The Sunlit Garden - Arranged)) which was a bit of a horrible decision to watch at this hour but also made me realize something. This is the definition of dude trust me analysis. There is one scene in the entire show that features both Kozue and Nanami. Within that scene, there are only a few angles that show both of them
Tumblr media
This wide shot places the camera at an angle and position in which Kozue and Nanami are both visible, but pillars are placed between them. While there is no physical blockade between them, the view visually separates them, creating an artificial barrier. While they are capable of coming together, the narrative as presented to us prevents it. Not to mention that their conversation after this point is focused on Akio, or “Daddy Long Legs” *retching noises* as Kozue refers to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the second, while Nanami is approaching Kozue, Kozue is walking away and out of frame to Akio. There is no barrier separating them - real, imagined, only perceived at a certain angle - but it’s too late. They are on different paths now thanks to Akio’s influence. After a shot of Kozue and Akio in silhouette walking into the night, the scene ends. Their moment is taken from them. In conclusion Akio is clearly actively trying to separate Kozue and Nanami and I have never overanalyzed anything in my life

On the handedness thing
Someone: “Hey Tenjou which way do you swing (sexuality)?”
Utena: “I swing both ways (baseball)! Though I don’t know why that’s relevant…”
Utena: “… wait-”

Left/Right-Handedness in Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Duel Survey
Long post ahead. Note that this is not a full analysis on character handedness due to only duel clips being used. If anyone has anything to add please do in reblogs, replies, or in asks/DMs at @nemuro-incinerator.
Duels in Shoujo Kakumei Utena show quite a bit about the characters involved, and are an expression of their motivations, spirit, and the resolution of an internal conflict taken out upon Utena as the (mostly) champion duelist. However, this post isn’t about that. This is raw data taken from clips of duels to try to figure out whether characters are left-handed, right-handed, or somewhere in between. Why? Why not? So, without further ado, I’m going to list each duelist in order of their first duel, saving Utena for last because she’s… tricky.
Saionji: Saionji, Touga, and Utena all get an added complication, that being that the Sword of Dios is pulled and often wielded with the left hand no matter what the wielder’s handedness may be. However, based mostly on his third duel - as that is the duel in which he uses his soul sword - I believe that Saionji is right-handed.
Miki: Miki is incredibly obviously right-handed. He never strays, never swaps hands between frames as far as I’m aware. Thank you, Miki Kaoru, for being easy to verify.
Juri: Juri switches sometimes, but appears to be mostly right-handed.
Nanami: Right-handed.
Touga: Once again, he wields the Sword of Dios left-handed. However, he wields his own sword right-handed, so I’m qualifying him as dubiously right-handed.
Kanae: Left-handed. Left-handedness is more common in the Black Rose Duelists than in the Student Council, and I thought before reviewing duel footage that they might all be left-handed and thus reflections of their respective duelists (in Kanae’s case, perhaps a reflection of Akio). However, as you will see later, this is not the case.
Kozue: Left-handed, which makes perfect sense as both a reflection of Miki and as the less normalized of the two. In western spiritualism, the “left-hand path” is associated with malicious magic, and Kozue’s association with the “witch” side of Akio’s narrative is not subtle.
Shiori: Left-handed, similar case to Kozue.
Tsuwabuki: Right-handed. The boy playing prince falls neatly in line with the other “prince” characters in his handedness, and is also the first case of a Black Rose Duelist and their Student Council member having the same handedness.
Wakaba: Left-handed. This caught me completely off-guard, given Wakaba’s status as a “normal girl”. While being left-handed isn’t seen as abnormal anymore, it was for a very long time, and Wakaba being left-handed presents a subtle defiance of Akio’s narrative. She’s not a completely normal girl.
Keiko: Right-handed. Keiko is the duelist who clued me in to the Black Rose Duelists not all being left-handed.
Mikage: Mikage begins the duel fighting left-handed, but switches to his right partway through. Based on this, I believe he is actually right-handed, but knows how to fight both left- and right-handed and switches because he knows the duel is getting serious. Funnily enough, him obscuring his handedness and switching from left to right makes him even more of a foil to Utena, as I’ll explain later.
Ruka: Both. He may be a Mikage case in which he purposefully switches, or it may be a convenience thing. I would have to review the footage again.
Akio: Right-handed. Makes perfect sense, given his role as the prince and fitting into societal expectations.
Utena: It’s complicated. Out of the 21 duels reviewed, Utena appeared to be left-handed in 5 of them, right-handed in 13 of them, and used both hands in at least two of them. However, she appears left-handed more often in the Student Council and Black Rose sagas, while she uses her right hand or both hands after around Keiko’s duel. This makes me think of two specific possibilities:
The Boring Explanation: Utena is right-handed, but the Sword Pull and animation woes made it so she appeared left-handed or ambidextrous earlier on
The Fun Explanation: Utena is ambidextrous, but uses her left hand less and less over time to fit into the societal norms that are pushed upon her more and more due to Akio’s grooming, eventually switching to solely using her right hand as his hold over her seems absolute. Even after she realizes the truth, she continues to fight right-handed because it is now what she’s used to.
In conclusion: It’s a bit of a mess, but I love useless data.
