Ignoring the fact that sometimes gods choose us, the fact that one might deserve a mad, murderous shape-shifting, knowledge-hungry gender ambiguous necromancer, wizard and wisdombringer, who’s fond of getting laid and leading an undead band of hunters and/or warriors in some grand kosmic multilevel game which manifests variously as a battle, story, poetry, and liberation from the forces of oppression and ignorance should be terrifying. Instead, I’m oddly comforted. Which sort of proves the point.

Some of you know that I started writing a novel a while ago. In 2012, actually. It seemed like I would never finish it, but here it is!

This is a book with LGBT+ characters, with disabled characters, with characters of color. With LGBT+, disabled characters of color. A book with characters whose identities and marginalizations are not there to make a point.

I was sick of never seeing anyone like me in media, so I made my own representation. The two main characters of this book are an agender, gay, mentally ill person of color of unknown ethnicity, and a pansexual, autistic Ecuadorian. Sounds pretty good, right? It gets better. The secondary characters are all poc, mostly LGBT+, and there are god given superpowers that can only be used by synergizing with a partner.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the hard world of ancient Rome, an immortal child of sunlight, Julian, is born to a god as old as the earth itself. In their journey to the modern world, Julian faces love and loss, mental illness, and suicidality. But Julian also meets a world to them yet unrealized, of kindness and compassion, and of true partnership. A man named Ramsey wanders into Julian’s life, born of smoke. They travel together through the hardships of the world, becoming friends, then partners, then lovers. Ramsey helps Julian along the path of independence, courage, and resilience. Julian will need them, for as they meet six other immortals, disaster strikes, and a virus designed by god threatens to rewrite the world.
