I love how unsympathetic Kipperlily's backstory comes across, because like yes, the desire to be more "interesting" through trauma like Riz is awful, but also its her most private bad thought that she only shares with her guidance counsellor while trying to work through her rage issues, its selfish and in bad taste but of course it is, she was like 14. And so now that that desire has been twisted by literal deific rage into something actually malevolent, none of the bad kids are even willing to try to empathize with her. And like, tbc I don't really blame them for that, its a *lot* to ask them to try and understand the person who has been antagonistic to them for the whole year and apparently resented them for years before that, which I think honestly adds to the tragedy of it all. God, she's so interesting

"why can't they just be friends" not in the homophobic way but in the "their platonic relationship in the source material is far more dynamic and complex than the sanitized personalities they gain as a result of shipping" way

SENSHI would want you to get enough sleep and have nice nutritious meals
CHILCHUCK would want you to know your worker rights and what your labor is worth
LAIOS would want you to embrace your passions and try new things
FALIN would want you to take care of your health and treat others with kindness
MARCILLE would want you to practice necromancy and have gay sex

something about foreshadowing being more prominent the second time around reading a story but in a way that the meaning is changed forever and you can never view a story the same as you once did before. do you know what i mean.

my take on shipping aromantic characters is that if you're aro you get to do whatever you want and if you're not you have to write me a three page essay 12 pt font times new roman double spaced explaining in detail why you believe entering a romantic relationship would be an interesting and worthwhile storyline for the character and how you believe their aromanticism would affect the way they experience said relationship

it always sucks in romances when characters aren't active participants in their own relationship or attraction. when it's always "why do i feel this way" and they can't name a single reason they like the love interest i'm like idk man i think you should get out of there maybe.
at some point if you're going too hard on the Genuine Confusion and the character having no clue why they're doing anything they're doing or why they even like the other party it's like. I think you were cursed by a wizard. or an author, which is something similar. it becomes something akin to The Narrative Has Mandated That This is A Love Story and Therefore I Must Be In Love rather than like. a convincing romance between parties who care about each other

Every day I think about how the Prime Directive is based on inherently racist and now outdated ideas of unilineal sociocultural evolution and this is only addressed less than a handful of times in the show

Kira and Kai Winn have one of the most fascinating dynamics in DS9, in my opinion. All of their interactions are charged with so many emotions – pity and jealousy and contempt and longing. They are narrative foils – Kira who never seeks power yet is granted it anyway over and over, and Winn who has desperately sought power all her life but who finds herself always unsatisfied. Kira with an incredible strength of faith but who never hides her uncertainties, and Winn who tries desperately to hide her deep insecurities and the faith within herself she can never find to be strong enough. And Winn hates Kira and envies her and admires her. And Kira detests the actions Winn has taken and yet still empathizes with her and still must reckon with the fact that Winn is an integral part of the religious system that Kira places her faith in.

Congratulations to Martha Wells, who very much deserves that sweet Hollywood cash for her years in the midlist SFF author mines. A big fucking No Thank You to casting a cis white dude as Murderbot, I guess lest we miss out on a TV show reassuring us that cis white men are people too.
