That was relatively reassuring, but she would still keep an eye out- just in case.
"That is good," She stated, partially relieved at the idea that it was unlikely. "Thank you for offering your family home as well as your room. We will find trades as soon as we are able so that we will not be consuming too much in the way of your resources. Thank you again for your hospitality."
"Thanks." Vara Kai managed already sitting upon one of the beds.
"While here, I will help you find a wife since you said yourself that you are terrible at attracting mates." It was blunt, to the point. The witch then proceeded into the room, turning only briefly to glance over her shoulder at him. "Good night."

“Of course.” Jatar stood in turn, pushing his plate away to lead Na Ehri and Vara Kai from the kitchen and toward the bedrooms.
His own room was clean for the moment. Neither he nor Mahesh were home often enough to make the room messy. He imagined that the room shared by Dafor and the twins was far more lived in.
“It’s just down the hall here,” Jatar assured the two women. It occurred to him that they would need proper clothes. Coruscant was cold. Certainly there were individual climates in the endlessly tall buildings, but overall he was rather certain that most would be uncomfortably cool for women from Dathomir.
“Here we are.” The door hissed open to admit them to what was a rather strangely pristine room. Mother had been in while he was gone then. “There are two beds, as you can see. A desk for writing at…tomorrow we’ll find you both some clothes that will fit but until then…perhaps mother at least has some sweaters that might fit the two of you….”
Jatar cleared his throat.
“The fresher is across the hall. You can bathe and do your business there. Er….relieve yourselves I mean….Groom. That sort of thing….Is there anything either of you need?”
Na Ehri examined the room quietly. They sat on platforms, they slept on platforms, they lived in tall buildings… yet they were such short people. It had to all be connected somehow.  It was very clean, almost eerily so. She was not certain what to think of that. Did he not collect feathers, shells, crystals? Jatar was a pilot though, it was likely that he was gone often. One can’t really make a home if they are always gone. It was probably why he didn’t have a wife.  Probably the only reason. He was relatively handsome in Na Ehri’s opinion, if one ignored his height. His hair was nice too, she noted while listening to him explain the refresher room. There had been one on his ship, but this one sounded more complicated. “Since we are no longer in the sky,” Na Ehri began, completely serious and straight-faced, “Can snakes come out of the holes in the refresher room?”
“Sn– “ Jatar’s mind seemed to skip a moment, like a corrupted holograpjic, “n – “ Could snakes come out of the holes in the fresher? “Uh…”
“Well I have never experienced a snake coming out of the drains…” he answered truthfully. “Besides, it’s not like we have wildlife.”
Jatar attempted laughing it off, but he was more than keenly aware that there were many who had unorthodox pets on Coruscant…And certainly they did not always take care of them responsibly. Who knew what was living in the sewer and water systems?
It wasn’t something he had ever considered before, but now he couldn’t stop considering it.
“I don’t think there’s any need to worry about it,” he concluded for the benefit of his guests.

The girl had her own room? By the looks of her she was rather young for that. At what age did mothers separate from their daughters on this planet?
“We will see you in the morning.” Na Ehri assured Yasmin. They wouldn’t be much fun tonight to anyone she imagined. Both of them were tired and Vara Kai undoubtedly had more than a few words for her. “Thank you, Chiti, for the meal. It was delicious.” She turned her head from the short matriarch to Jatar as she rose carefully from her seat. Beside her Vara Kai followed suit, briefly thanking Chiti as well. “Lead the way.” The witch said with a smile, mildly curious to see how exactly this strange man kept his room, how star people kept their sleeping rooms in general.

“We can have a sleep over in my room,” Yasmin announced loudly and enthusiastically. Jatar snorted at his sister’s excitement. She really didn’t get enough time interacting with other girls, it seemed.
“The two of you may have my room,” he answered steadily, “I will take the sofa in the family room. I can show you there.”
“Butttttt – “
“No buts, Yasmin. Na Ehri and Vara Kai will no doubt want their own space,” their mother told the girl.
Pouting, Yasmin aimlessly clicked from information image to information image on her holopad.

How could there be no animals to hunt? That- They bought their food at the market, he had told her that. Without a trade how would she purchase food?
"I see." She pushed the remaining vegetable on her plate around and for a brief moment worry set in. "Then that is what I will do." As she finally impaled the green thing the hard look Vara Kai gave her not-husband went unnoticed by her.

“Isn’t that right?” He looked at his ‘wife’ for help with her daughter.
Her daughter, though somewhere between spiteful and well-meaning, was out of line. She knew there would be a heated discussion between the two of them once they were alone. It was to be expected.
Na Ehri nodded, swallowing the food in her mouth before replying as easily as she could manage. “I do not need to learn a new trade. I am a huntress and will hunt the animals on the red tower.”
She had seen a few among the crowds of people on their way to the metal lifting room too.
“There are no game animals here,” Jatar said quickly. “Vara Kai is right about that much, Na Ehri, you cannot hunt on Coruscant…and you will need to find a new trade.”

“Ha, ha! That means you have to listen to meee,” Yasmin grinned impishly. Jatar thought that Vara Kai almost deserved to be teased by Yasmin in return for outing them.
Much as she and her mother might pull the ‘unassuming foreigners’ card, he knew better than to think that Vara Kai had not done this on purpose. She would almost be better off learning from the Jedi. Perhaps they would teach her common decency.
“Why did you sever yourself from her? I think this woman’s the best you could do in the looks department,” his mother murmured with some dry humour. Jatar offered her a wounded look in return.
“A cargo pilot is someone who flies a ship to bring different items to and from different places,” Jatar finally explained, trying to move passed the topic of his relationship with Na Ehri and away from the embarrassing discomfort of it.
“Which is what I was doing when we crashed on your planet, as it so happens. You have to know how to pilot a cargo ship to work as one, and it takes many years to study enough to properly learn how to fly the ship and be granted a license to operate one.”
Oddly…. The small girl was correct in that to a degree.
This child was much more familiar with how to survive in this world than she was. “Fact. You do know Coruscant better than I do.” She replied flatly before looking at Jatar again.
“Hm. Well. If there isn’t any other trade you can teach your wife then I suppose you will teach her to be a pilot.” If she was a pilot they could eventually fly back home, even if it was just to visit.
She gripped the metal tool in her fist and stabbed almost violently at the vegetable on her plate before taking a bite out of it.
“Just because I can’t teach her another trade doesn’t mean that Na Ehri cannot find someone to teach her something she might like more than piloting, if that isn’t what she wants to do.” Not to mention he was not a recognised instructor…And he wasn’t certain what recognised instructor would know how to handle Na Ehri.

That was certainly different than what she was accustom to. Men as leaders, witches, 'bread competitors'? No wonder star men were so different, they were smarter than their counterparts on Dathomir. That was the only explanation she could think of.  “Hearth keeper... that is like someone who tends to the house matters, yes?” She guessed so based on what Jatar had said regarding his mother before and from what she had seen. “What did your husband do?” What sort of trades could one have here if hunting wasn’t an option? Or was it? Were there animals that lived on this planet? There had to be.

“Do you have many visitors from off planet on Dathomir?” Chiti asked.
“No, at least not near the village I lived in. The last offworlder I had seen was a little over fifteen years ago.” Another bite of the… hot tasting food? It was a flavor she was just starting to become somewhat accustom to. It was good, but if she had a salt block with her and the cook was not within view… She was just more accustom to saltier flavors.  “He was also from this planet; another accidental arrival.” Though she did question that somewhat, he had spoken Dathomiri relatively well. She shifted from the subject. “Many people come here though, yes? Were you born in this place?” Home, village, planet.
“Yes, many people,” she agreed.
“I’m not from here originally, no. Our family is from the planet Chandrila. My late husband and I moved here when Jatar was six, to start a new life. Neither of us were politicians, and that was most of what was available for jobs when we were there. It made sense to come somewhere where we could do something different…”
“Well – where my husband could. I have always been the hearth keeper.”

“We have come to stay on Coruscant.” They would not be returning to Dathomir. “That is where Jatar’s ship was going so we go here.”
She then took notice of what Jatar was doing. They ate their food with strange tools. This was something she now vaguely remembered being told by the man who shared blood with Vara Kai. It looked like something that would be more complicated than it would seem, like throwing daggers.
It would be less complicated than learning that had been she hoped.
Na Ehri just observed him for a time before lifting one of the tools in her hand and trying to mimic how he was holding it. Meanwhile Vara Kai simply ate with her hands.
We are not star people, they know this.
Better to try to learn sooner than later, Na Ehri thought, but did not bother telling her daughter. It would be obvious what she was likely correcting her on if she spoke now. Vara Kai was stubborn, she would be more willing if she decided to learn on her own. Well, that went without saying Na Ehri supposed.
“That’s an awfully sudden decision,” Chiti pointed out, “even if you’ve wanted to see the stars since you were little.”
It was not accusatory, more observant. “Though I suppose if it was to protect your daughter, I can see why you made such a spur of the moment choice.”
The witch stabbed at one of the vegetables, managing to impale it upon the foreign tool. She wasn’t entirely certain that she was holding it right, but it worked and she managed to bring the food to her mouth. Truly it seemed like a lot of work when hands would have worked just as well. Eating this way likely became easier with practice.  “It felt like a good choice so it was the one I made.”  She shrugged. “I could sense that your son was a trustworthy person.” The opportunity had fallen from the sky really. Jatar had no magic. It was a slightly safer risk than the one she had been willing to take fifteen years prior.

“I see…” Yasmin trailed off, thoughtful. “Well..I think you should train as a Jedi. If you’ve already started learning how, why not continue? There’s no Nightsisters on Coruscant, and there’s a whole Temple of Jedi between you and them anyway, even if they were here.”
Jatar cleared his throat, trying not to chuckle at his sister.
“Vara Kai is too old, Yasmin,” he reminded her. “The Jedi don’t train grown men and women.”
“Well that’s silly,” Yasmin decided.
Their mother turned from the stove with three plates full of food, spiced and sizzling tantalizingly in the air. She set them in front of her guests, accepting a kiss on the cheek from Jatar before he sat down with his own meal as well.
Ah. Yes. Star people and their kissing. There wasn’t even a word for that in Dathomiri. Biting, yes, kissing- such a strange thing. Not that she didn’t understand how to, cheek or otherwise, her first husband had introduced her to the concept. It was just…..hm.
The food smelled foreign and undeniably good. Not meat, certainly, but she didn’t only eat meat- just primarily.
She waited a moment for the food to cool slightly before simply reaching in and grabbing a piece from her dish. She popped it into her mouth, not entirely concerned with what was left on her fingers.
After chewing and swallowing she spoke,
“This is delicious.” Very different, but good she thought? It was not as salty as she was accustom to but she guessed that would likely be the case by the look of it.
“Yes it’s good eh?” Jatar smiled around his mouthful of food, noting how his mother scrutinized Na Ehri’s eating habits but chose not to comment. She knew how it was to be new in a foreign place.
“Glad you’re enjoying it,” Chiti said from where she was cleaning up after herself.
“Have the two of you come here to stay?” Chiti asked then, coming to join them at the table and rest her tired feet.

“Why did the bad witches want to steal her?”
Vara Kai did not want to write off the idea of being taught by the jedi, if they were willing to. By the way her mother spoke it was not something she was considering at all really- and likely wouldn’t if she knew how one became part of it. Considering what Jedi Master Lin had said she was too old for them to accept anyways.
“Because most witches can’t use their magic without speaking their incantations. They don’t use the Force in the way the way jedi do.” Vara Kai answered flatly. “If I became one of the Nightsisters, the bad witches, they would fare a better chance against the Singing Mountain Clan. They are the only other clan known to have witches who can use the Force in that way.”
Her mentor being one of them, her mentor’s younger sister being the other.

How did she do it?
It was difficult to explain to a star girl, especially one who she didn’t think was a witch. One who knew next to nothing about Dathomir.
“Some aspects are the same as those of silent magic- the Force- but others are completely different. Our magic requires chants to serve as a conduit of our ancestral magick as written in the Book of Law or as adapted by other witches.” Shadow writing appeared upon the table only to quickly fade. It would be a lie to say that Vara Kai did not enjoy showing off this ability. Letting her mother know that she had not and would not have full control over how she chose to further her education in the magicks, silent or otherwise.
“-Another reason that men are not warriors on Dathomir is because they are unable to cast spells. They possess no magic, only women do.”
“They aren’t?” Yasmin seemed to think on this seriously. “How do you know?”
To the child, it seemed silly to discount them completely. Surely there were some boys with these powers too? There were an equal amount of boys and girls at the Jedi Temple, or so it seemed to Yasmin.
“Yasmin – “
She ignored Jatar’s attempt at a warning, more interested in getting her answers than in whatever it was he was attempting to caution her against.
This was when Na Ehri jumped in before Vara Kai could.
“Dathomir itself is filled with magic. We do not know why it lends itself to matriarchal power.”
There were definitely several strong reasons they all had been taught, but it would be difficult for star people to understand. These were people who put men in leadership positions afterall.
“Even the rancors are led by a fearsome herd mother. Nature blessed women with the ability to use its power as well as to create life. Who can say why?” She looked to Jatar, hoping that was a star person approved explanation for it.
“I know that here there are both men and women who wield the silent magic-” The Force, Vara Kai corrected in her mind. “The Force. My daughter can use it to a degree, but hasn’t been trained. We don’t have schools for it on Dathomir.”
She did not see how her daughter looked down to the table briefly upon mention of her lack of training.
That seemed strange to Yasmin, but she decided to accept the explanation. Jatar’s warning before hadn’t gone completely unheeded, in her defense. She knew that he wasn’t overly cautious for no reason. At least not usually.
Jatar offered Na Ehri a helpless look when she glanced at him. Yasmin was incorrigible.
“Well…we have schools for it here,” she told Na Ehri, and then something lighted behind her eyes. “Is that why you came to Coruscant? So that Va-Vara…Kai could train in the Force? Are you going to be a Jedi?”

“That’s everyone’s job here, but usually mama’s.” Tending the home was something that Yasmin was learning too, of course.
“Well, I can make it your job, little miss.”
“No!”
Their mother chuckled from where she was still preparing the food, and Jatar leaned forward as well to get a look at what Vara Kai was doing. It was interesting – like a silhouette show.
“But how are you doing the magic,” Yasmin continued in question. “It’s not like the Force, but that’s the only kind of magic I know of.”

Yasmin became transfixed, her hazel eyes wider than before, if possible. The holopad completely forgotten she watched as the shadows changed and morphed, performing the story for her.
“But how do you talk to them? Why don’t you use blasters instead of spears? Why do you have to fight at all, can’t you just talk about it? What happens to the lady who loses? Why aren’t there any men who are warriors? How are you doing that?”
“We talk to them through the magic our ancestors passed on to us.... I do not know what a blaster is so I could not answer why we don’t have them. We fight because strength is important within our culture, both inward and outward. Men are not warriors because their job is to tend to the home.” She chose to evade what might be offensive to these star people who were so opposed to the notion of slavery.   The witch watched the illustrative illusions on the table before smiling at her daughter, curious and vaguely concerned. “And how Vara Kai can do that is something I would like to know because I myself can not.” Nor could anyone within the Misty Falls Clan as far as she knew. “My dearest friend taught me,” Vara Kai replied casually, looking straight at Yasmin and avoiding her mother’s gaze. “she is powerful in such magicks as well as many others.” So Barukka worked with illusions, that was something Na Ehri did not know. It didn’t really matter now, she supposed. They were among the stars beyond the reach of any of the clans, for better or worse

" My clan is located within a dense, vibrant jungle, surrounding a grand waterfall." To Na Ehri's surprise, Vara Kai began chanting quietly, her hand outstretched. Upon the table small, moving silhouettes of the jungles and the water fall were cast upon the table.
Who had taught her this?
Na Ehri continued and Vara Kai continued her murmured chanting, the images on the table keeping up with what her mother was describing. "The jungles were filled with dangerous creatures such as rancors; though we could speak with them, and for the most part they became our friends. Saurian fliers, great winged carnivorous creatures dominated the air and could pluck someone from from ground with great ease. Only the strongest of witches could tame these fierce reptilian predators and be allowed travel upon their backs. The bond between a witch and her mount is one of mutual respect and the relationship is symbiotic. They would protect us and help us travel if we in turn helped them hunt. Rancors have terrible eyesight, you see, worse than our own, so we would help them find food. Saurian fliers are not particularly strategic in their hunting and we would lend our aid in that way."
The witch observed Vara Kai's continued illusions. They were not detailed, but in the future she imagined that her daughter might grow the skill to make them so. "There are many clans, each governed by the Clan Mother, the strongest of our warriors and witches. Her daughters grow to take on the title once she passes away, but only after they prove themselves in demonstrations of strength and combat. The women must demonstrate their prowess in clubs, spears, arrows, daggers, hand to hand as well as magical combat so the clan might choose which of the sisters would best be able to lead us ."

“It’s a ginkgo leaf,” she answered primly, as though called upon in class, “the trees have two genders, one male and one female. The females drop an edible fruit to the ground during the autumn season, and the leaves turn a bright yellow.”
She turned the holopad toward the new lady, Na Ehri, so that she could take a look at the information herself.
“You see? It says it all right there. We’re studying plant husbandry at lessons.”
Male and female trees? How unusual. How did that even work? “Ah.” Na Ehri looked down only to see indecipherable symbols. It was written in basic, of course. “I can’t read basic. We don’t write in basic on Dathomir.” Not that it would have made much difference. She couldn’t read in Dathomiri fluently.  The witch pointed at the slate with the floating leaf, “We don’t have… what this is, there either, or ships… conservators, many things that I have seen here.” Almost everything she had seen.
“Oh…Well, this is a holopad,” Yasmin explained patiently, “you see? If you press this big button on the slab, it will change the page for you and give you new information. You press this one on the side to bring back the previous item, and this one turns it on and off. Holopads…hold knowledge inside of them about specific things, whatever information is on the holochip has been loaded into them”
Yasmin did turn to the next page for Na Ehri, this time a small flower with rounded petals floated above the surface.
“What do you have on Dathomir?”

“I have five brothers,” she announced, pressing a button on one of the holopads to activate it. The device gave a gentle chime, illuming a hologram of a plant’s leaf above its surface.
“Only Mahesh doesn’t live at home right now, but that’s because he’s away at higher education. His school’s very far away.”
Five brothers? How unfortunate, well, on Dathomir it would be. Here men held trades and were educated like women. They would need to be since they could apparently hold leadership positions. “I see… It is good to learn about things.” Na Ehri watched the floating… what she assumed was a plant leaf. It appeared entirely out of thin air after the slate she had made an odd sound. “What’s that?”
