Anju Agarwal: Gender Equality, in Reality, is Possible!
Tumblr media
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council Chairperson, Anju Agarwal, believes in gender equality and hence she wants that women should come into the forefront. It is a fact that we only speak about gender equality but hardly believe in it. Now onward we should start believing the fact that there is something called gender equality and we should start respecting the thought of it.
We can see, some people burst into the debate when we speak about gender equality. At the same time, they hardly mean it. So, it is important that what you preach you trust on that. In today's day and age, women have reached to every possible place and with lots of hand works, they have carved the niche for themselves. It has been proven that a woman can micromanage things which probably the other gender can't always. So, it is proven and a huge truth.
Smt Anju Agarwal also supports women in all the front and urges that they should come in the front line. The time has changed when a woman used to be doing only house-hold works. Now she can even manage a city or a country so to say.
All women need is the support, the courage to do something in life and the confidence. These three things are the amalgamation of women empowerment. If we see in a country like India, women are not in need to be empowered. All they need is just respect from everyone. Mutual respect can better the things and it gives courage and confidence to fight with all the obstacles that come into the way.
So, gender equality starts with giving respect to each other. It should not be forced but should come from the inside. Once you start respecting people in general, you will start feeling that yes, we all the equal now. Once we feel equal, we do not require to debate anymore on equality.

Interview with Anju Agarwal – Plastic ban, traffic rules & development
Tumblr media
Single-use plastic has become an unmanageable burden for cities and towns across India. In the wake of this growing problem, PM Narendra Modi has proposed a complete ban on single-use plastic. We talked to Anju Agarwal, chairperson of Muzaffarnagar, Nagar Palika, to know her views about this matter and also asked her about social and regulatory implications of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, and current economic conditions, among other things.
Below are excerpts from the conversation.
Anju Agarwal:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed a complete ban on single-use plastic (possibly from October 2). How do you see this move in terms of environmental aspect
This is a good initiative. I think the government should go ahead with the blanket ban.
As citizens, we need to raise awareness about the damaging effects plastic have on the environment.
It should be started in our homes.
Ending production of plastic industries is important for achieving success in a complete plastic ban.
We've been unable to do this in Muzaffarnagar. We regulate whole-sellers and retailers to restrict plastic, but it eventually comes into the market.
Consumers need to change their habit of using plastic shopping bags and disposable cups, etc.
In fact, the practice of taking a shopping bag from home was earlier common in our society. It's time we should get back to that old habit.
We must understand that single-use plastic products have damaging effects on the environment.
While environmental concerns are undeniably true, there is another perspective. Critics of the decision say that the move will have an adverse impact on the already sluggish economy. What's your opinion on this?
Anju Agarwal:
I think we have to ban production if we want to get rid of the problem of plastic waste.
But first, the government should find an alternative for people working in plastics industries.
The government should also encourage alternative industries like paper bags, eco-friendly plastics, recycled plastics, etc.
The Government has recently amended the Motor Vehicles Act. Under the amendments, fine/penalty for violating traffic rules has been increased substantially. Do you think these amendments will improve the efficiency of traffic regulations?
Anju Agarwal:
Amendments made by the government are right.
This is a good beginning. A higher penalty will make people more alert and careful.
I'm sure the government will succeed in making people more aware of traffic rules.
Everything has two sides. I agree a higher penalty may, in some way, cause trouble for people.
But in the long run, it's for the desired change, so it's good overall.
We should do things that make us face a penalty.
Small things like wearing a helmet or seatbelt while riding or driving can big changes.
What do you want to say about the current economic conditions of the country, I mean the slowdown in the economy?
Anju Agarwal:
Our economy is going through a challenging phase. The government will definitely do something to overcome this.
The business community is worried, they need help from the government in terms of economic policy.
Anything else you want to say?
Anju Agarwal:
I've been putting best efforts for the development of the city.
But as you might be knowing, I'm facing some political challenges these days.
These challenges, however, cannot stop me from my mission to transform Muzaffarnagar into a fully developed city.
In fact, I'm enjoying working in such challenging conditions.

Anju Agarwal promotes community involvement in municipal cleanliness
Tumblr media
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council Chairperson Anju Agarwal is known for her consistent efforts to change the face of the city in terms of cleanliness. The municipal leader has been overseeing a number of initiatives related to the efficient management of solid waste and sewage.
Community or citizen-led initiatives has a remarkable role to play when it comes to achieving success in urban waste management and cleanliness. Such initiatives can fill the gaps sometimes left by local urban bodies.
For efficient and sustainable waste management, cities have to more closely collaborate with residents. Community-based organizations and NGOs also play a significant role in maintaining urban cleanliness. An increasing number of cities around the world are partnering with local communities to improve their waste management efforts.
In addition to these, cities are now also improving their waste collection and segregation process. For example, Indian cities like Pune are making efforts to organize and integrate waste pickers in the formal waste management system.
Urban local bodies like Muzaffarnagar Nagar Palika Parishad need to adopt more strategic policies for waste management. Measures like making a comprehensive waste management master plan enable the municipalities to analyze their current and future waste management needs. Then they can identify the obstacles and issues within the current waste management system and rectify those. For waste management to be effective and sustainable, it should be supported by a robust regulatory framework, says Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council chairperson Anju Agarwal.

Anju Agarwal – How Muzaffarnagar's sugar industry benefits farmers & traders
Tumblr media
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council chairperson Anju Agarwal has always sugarcane farmers and local traders to take advantage of the city's sugar market. The jaggery market (Gur Mandi) of Muzaffarnagar is one of the largest in the world. This market has a significant contribution to the country's industrial economy.
India is the world's largest producer of sugarcane and the second-largest producer of sugar after Cuba. Combined with other sugarcane products Gur (jaggery) and Khandsari, India becomes the largest producer of sugar-related products.
Sugar industry plays a central role in India's economy. It receives more than a thousand crore of capita investment and provides employment to lakhs of workers across the country. Moreover, several crore sugarcane farmers also depend completely on the sugar industry and its economic conditions.
Sugarcane farmers in the country face a number of challenges. The production cost of sugarcane is high and farmers also face hurdles when it comes to transportation of sugarcane. This is mainly due to the size and shape of the sugarcane. This led to the creation of localized sugar industry like in cities like Muzaffarnagar. Also, sugarcane cannot be stored for long. This further adds to the problem of transportation. Hence farmers are compelled to sell their produce in the nearest market.
For these reasons markets like the Muzaffarnagar, Gur Mandi play a crucial role in the overall growth of the industry. Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council  chairperson Anju Agarwal often discusses these factors with local industrialists and traders. She asks them to work according to a long-term strategy that benefits both traders and farmers.

Anju Agarwal – Confidence and willpower make you successful
With strong willpower you can achieve goals that otherwise seem impossible, says Anju Agarwal, chairperson of Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council .
“People do not lack strength; they lack willpower,” said Victor Hugo. All of out want to do something outstanding and achieve something great. But only a few succeed. Many people think that in order to do something great we need to have some extraordinary skills. Some think they don't have enough time to do something unique.
All these people are wrong for all they lack is strong willpower. According to the renowned self-help author Napoleon Hill, if you have willpower and confidence, you can achieve anything in life. Lack of willpower is the root cause of the failure faced by so many people.
People simply don't start because they lack willpower. The first step towards success is the first step itself. You have to have started to get something done. That's where willpower comes in. Without willpower, it's really difficult to undertake something challenging.
There are many different ways to develop the willpower to succeed. You should agree on the fact that most of our willpower is lost in the process of getting distracted. Our world is replete with information, devices and entertainment options, and people. These make us more vulnerable to distraction. Getting rid of distractions is crucial to strengthening your willpower.
Anju Agarwal, chairperson of Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council says that we should constantly nourish our willpower to keep moving on a path of success.

Anju Agarwal – From business leaders to politicians, women are excelling everywhere
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council  chairperson, Anju Agarwal believes women rightfully deserve as much importance in the professional setting as men do. According to her, the belief that women are less capable has become outdated with remarkable success being achieved by women in all fields.
Today, women have equal stakes in socio-economic development. With their foray into professional areas from politics to business and from sports to research, women are becoming more important in social development than ever. For example, the athlete Hima Das has repeatedly made this country feel proud by winning many international medals, including several gold medals. Most recently she has won a gold medal in Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland.
Women in rural and semi-urban areas mainly need to understand the significance of gender equality and women empowerment. They should realize that their lives are not limited to taking care of household works. A change in traditional belief in this context may play a crucial role in creating the next generation of empowered women. Such women would be the ones who choose the academic path of their own choice and join a profession that they like.
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council  chairperson Anju Agarwal believes even a small group of highly educated and empowered women can inspire more and more girls. Every educated woman should, therefore, take responsibility to encourage others and contribute to the empowerment of women.

Anju Agarwal – women deserve equal opportunities in education
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council chairperson, Anju Agarwal has been a supporter of educational freedom since she a student herself. After entering public as a chairperson of Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council , she started to convert her support to policy efforts. The chairperson has taken a number of important decisions that aim to strongly promote girls' education in the city.
When talking about women's education, Anju Agarwal often highlights the performance of girls in schools and colleges. For example, Hansika Shukla and Karishma Arora topped the 2019 CBSE results for class 10th. In schools, girls are doing much better than boys. In colleges too, women are excelling in every discipline – be it arts, science or commerce.
Unfortunately, not every family in cities like Muzaffarnagar are enthusiastic about educating their girls. Challenges are many, especially when it comes to higher education.
According to a recent report by the World Bank, girls with little or no education are more likely to get married before the desired age, suffer domestic violence, and live in poverty. These are striking findings and should absolutely encourage everyone to be an advocate of girls' education. Women with better education tend to marry later and have fewer children. Education also empowers them to participate in decision making and become financially independent.
All of us know that women with higher education can join the professional world. This is not only beneficial in terms of women empowerment but also has immense significance in economic development. All families in Muzaffarnagar should strongly support the higher education of the girls as they do for boys. This will help the city move towards a progressive and more socially advanced future.

Anju Agarwal – How education impacts cities like Muzaffarnagar
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council chairperson, Anju Agarwal says people, especially low-income families, should know how educations impacts society. The impacts of education drive society towards progress and development.
First thing first – education is the fuel of a democratic society. It is the real safeguard of democracy and the shield that protects people from undemocratic actions. Besides, it's not just the political system of a nation that is protected by education, rather its impacts are much larger than that. Education creates a pool of knowledge and boosts awareness that is also crucial to geopolitical stability of a nation.
Unless the citizens of a nation are educated, they cannot be fully aware of their human rights and other international laws. So we can say that geopolitical stability is one of the most important effects of education.
Education is directly related to the economic development of a country. Most of us aware that the more educated a country becomes better the chances it has to move upward on the ladder of economic prosperity. Education creates a pool of skilled human resources who can significantly contribute to the economic growth of the country.
Talented and skilled human resources also join the global labor market and create another important source of economic progress. Goods made by these skilled humans can be sold in the global market.
Anju Agarwal has repeatedly talked about this impacts of education and asked people of Muzaffarnagar to understand their significance.

Anju Agarwal - women empowerment for long term goals of Muzaffarnagar
Chairperson of Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council  , Anju Agarwal has been advocating for women empowerment for a long time now. She has always believed that without equal freedom and opportunities for women a society cannot progress. Being a woman associated with public service, she can feel the need for woman empowerment more intensely.
Women empowerment is largely a global phenomenon. The social liberty of women, improvement of their socio-political
status and economic condition have become more important than ever. All these have become topics of public debates and discussion in developing and developed countries alike.
By far education is widely believed to be the most critical factor associated with women empowerment. Education is the best tool for empowering women with knowledge, skills, and self-confidence. Providing equal educational opportunities to girls could be the first step toward women empowerment.
It has been seen that given the right opportunity and environment, girls can perform equally, even better in almost all academic disciplines. An increasing number of women are now participating in technical and vocational education programs like engineering, architecture, and medical technologies.
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council  chairperson Anju Agarwal says that the trend of increasing participation of women in technical fields will create long term benefits. She is hopeful about the future of women in the professional arena.

Anju Agarwal – realistic development projects for Muzaffarnagar
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council Chairman, Anju Agarwal has a comprehensive vision for development in the city. With wide-ranging infrastructure development projects underway, she is confident about translating her vision into reality.
Construction projects for every sector, better education opportunities, the safety of women, and commercial advancement, etc. are some of the major areas of work she is overseeing. Her focus has largely been on the overall development of the city. The development will not just improve the lives of people living in Muzaffarnagar, but will also make the city a leading urban area.
However, successfully completing development plans in Muzaffarnagar is not easy. The success or failure of any development project heavily depends on a variety of factors. The first element determining the projects' success is planning. Urban planning is a sophisticated task with a poor track record in Indian cities and towns.
For an urban development project to be successful, the goal of the project should be realistic. Anju Agarwal ensures that the development plans created by her team remain in the realm of possibility. The socio-economic conditions of Muzaffarnagar have to be thoroughly considered before considering any project.
Muzaffarnagar Nagarpalika is experienced enough to the only plan and introduces such development projects that are administratively and financially.

Anju Agarwal - modernization of waste management in Muzaffarnagar
Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council chairman, Anju Agarwal says that waste management has been a big challenge for her team. However, these challenges are not unique to Muzaffarnagar, as municipal waste management is a widespread problem in the country, she says. But the good news is that Muzaffarnagar city has made considerable improvement in waste management since Anju Agarwal took office.
Improper waste management and cleaning practices not just creates environmental hazards for residents but also damages a city's beauty. Hence every municipal administration should focus on improving the processes of collection, transportation, and disposal of waste. The methods of collecting, transporting and disposing of waste are still carried out with low efficiency in many cities and towns across the country. However, the situation of Muzaffarnagar's waste management system is improving dramatically.
With new equipment and workers, a closely monitored cleaning system and continuous modernization, the city is becoming cleaner than ever. The credits for this achievement goes to Anju Agarwal and her team at Muzaffarnagar Municipal Council .
The sewage system of the city is also being updated continuously.  Drain cleaning has become a common part of the cleanliness drives. Ultra-modern machinery like robotic equipment are being used to clear drains and make disposal of liquid waste more efficient.
