Memorial Day Meaning
Congress created Memorial Day to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day and was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was a day for Americans to decorate the graves of those who had died in the Civil War.
In 1971, Congress passed a law that changed the name of the holiday to Memorial Day and made it a federal holiday. Memorial Day is now a day for Americans to remember all of those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, regardless of the war in which they fought.
On Memorial Day, Americans traditionally visit the graves of loved ones who have died in the military. They also participate in parades and other public events that honor those who have served. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made for our country and to renew our commitment to freedom and democracy.
Here are some ways to observe Memorial Day:
Visit a cemetery and place flowers on the graves of those who have died in the military.
Attend a Memorial Day parade or ceremony.
Volunteer your time to a veterans' organization.
Donate to a veterans' charity.
Learn more about the history of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
