My favourite bit of BG3 lore is that Withers is legitimately responsible for the Dead Three, but he's probably too embarrassed to tell you, so every time you ask him to elaborate he just gives you a very stern, "Noooo."
I also love that the reason he's responsible for their uprising is because he got bored. He literally got bored of his position as Lord of the Dead and wanted to retire, so when these three morally questionable humans came looking for godhood he was like, "Hmmm. Yes, okay. Here. Take my portfolios. Fight over them. I don't care. I quit."
So after bowling with skulls in a friendly competition to decide who would get what portfolio, they took up his powers and wreaked havoc on the world. Only at that moment did Jergal, AKA Withers, AKA our precious Bone Daddy think, "I'm just now, internally, asking myself, in quite a worried way, whether I might've made an error."
So he joins your merry band and watches your escapades, calmly twiddling his fingers while you clean up his mess. He's happy to lend his aid, even to the point that he'll bring Durge back to life if they reject Bhaal, even though he technically shouldn't. But he's Withers. The rules don't apply to him. If Ao doesn't like it, he can descend from the Heavens and say it to his rotting face.
And the reason he saves Durge isn't necessarily because he likes them or because he's a morally good entity (though one certainly could make that argument), but because he wants to add insult to injury. He steals Bhaal's child with a big smile on his face, dubs them his Chosen, and praises them for rejecting all the power they were promised. But of course, he still doesn't tell them who he is—or rather who he was.
Then, when all is said and done, he throws Tav and their companions a cute little party. No one knows it's probably half a thank you party and half a "Withers is bored again" party. And if anyone misbehaves, he'll get irritated and whisk them away. Because how dare they? He put a lot of work into that.
And at the end of it all, he walks up to a mural of the Dead Three and basically goes, "Lmao. Thou didst fuck around, and thou didst find out." Just savagely roasting them.
And then poof!
He waves them into non-existence.

I’ve started actually reading the notes I pick up and the hastily scribbled note tickled me. Halsin leaving very specific instructions to Nettie for certain safeguards very quickly so he can leave with Aradin to get to the Selunite temple, but makes time to specifically single out Tuffet.
She’s the bear by the elevator. She is getting lazy.

Astarion rolled his eyes as the message finished and projection of Gale lifted an arm. As he did an illuminate path appeared, directing him to go through their camp and then into the woods. Leave it to their wizard to create something that was somehow equally ridiculous and pompous. He could have easily asked Astarion himself over their evening meal. But no, that wasn't Gale's style. The man took every opportunity to complicate things.

A/N: Excerpt from an upcoming piece for Willingly Unwiling in which Astarion got hurt and Gale takes care of him (Sickfic with Gale is still on the way too)
Summary: While feeding, Astarion reminisces on their time traveling.
Astarion sat back on his heels and licked his lips as he dropped the cultist. Their breathing was shallower and they'd be dead in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours.
Pity.
“I think that was the last one…”
He stood up and sheathed his daggers as footsteps approached him. He glanced over and frowned when he saw Gale was staring at him.
“What?” He asked. “Something on my face?”
“In a manner of speaking,” Gale appeared almost amused.
“Ugh, you got a little,” Wyll made a face and tossed a torn cloth to Astarion. “Just, all over.” He motioned to his mouth and lower chin.
Astarion caught it and rolled his eyes. “I’d like to see you bite into someone's throat and come away clean.”
“I dunno, I kinda like it,” Gale shrugged and bent down to root around through another cultist's bag.
Astarion raised an eyebrow and smirked a little when the wizard startled as he stood over him.
“Is that so?” He asked.
“I just meant…people tend to think twice when someone’s face is covered with blood, wouldn't you agree?” Gale leaned back on his hands. “It's scary. In a good way.”
“Scary?” Astarion repeated.
“Frightening?” Gale tried.
Astarion had never really considered himself frightening before. Charming. Attractive. Cunning. But never scary.
He straightened up and held out his hand to help the man to his feet and finished wiping his mouth off, tossing the cloth aside. He leaned back as Gale's hand came up.
“Sorry you just um, you missed a spot,” Gale realized his mistake and started to lower his hand.
“Oh, well, go on then,” Astarion leaned forward again. His touch was almost feather light as he wiped the corner of his mouth and just under his chin. “Do you think I meet our blade of frontiers cleanliness views?” He joked.
“Least for now,” Gale answered and wiped his hand on his robe. “I hope I didn't overstep with my characterization…my mouth tends to move faster than my brain.”
“Not at all,” Astarion grinned, showing fang. “I like the idea of being frightening. “Who needs a fear spell when you cause the fear yourself hmm?”
“If you two are done flirting,” Wyll called over his shoulder.
“What? We’re not, that is to say, I,” Gale stammered.
“Now look what you did, Wyll, you broke the poor boy,” Astarion teased. And such a lovely shade of red he turns.
