Personal morality plays a major role in political alignment. Jonathan Haidt is a brilliant professor and moral psychologist.
In his research he has found a collection of terms that address different moral approaches and how they tie in with political leanings.
Care: cherishing and protecting others; opposite of harm
Fairness or proportionality: rendering justice according to shared rules; opposite of cheating
Loyalty or ingroup: standing with your group, family, nation; opposite of betrayal
Authority or respect: submitting to tradition and legitimate authority; opposite of subversion
Sanctity or purity: abhorrence for disgusting things, foods, actions; opposite of degradation
Professor Haidt finds that those leaning or nested in more left aligned ideology score highly in prioritizing care and fairness.
To the right leaning or those nesting in conservative ideology prioritize loyalty, authority, and sanctity as key determinants in morality.
These findings are interesting because it shows that depending on the prioritization of the characteristics, a prediction can be accurately made to which political leaning an individual will be/is.
Liberal/left leaning people work on a 2 factor determinant of morality whereas conservative/right leaning individuals work on a 3-5 factor determination.
Personally, I fall more in line with the cohorts on the right side of the spectrum when it comes to moral determination (you can take a quiz on this at
yourmorals.org)
Though, I do make all efforts to take a centrist view on all politics, politicians, policies, etc.
Professor Haidt has studied morality psychology for quite some time and I encourage anyone interested in the topic to delve into his work, and I will probably feature some of his talks/lectures/debates from time to time.

Bias.
We all have it, and we often fail to admit it, even hate to admit it at times.
This video points out this stark reality in a calm and reasoned manner.
I fall victim to bias all the time, which makes me unique, just like everyone else.
Bias, without self-awareness, can taint our view of reality. This can bleed into beliefs, political leanings, and even one-on-one discussions.
Without recognizing bias, the entire landscape of a situation is warped to you. If you can’t see the entire picture clearly, or at least don’t strive to see, how can you have an opinion that is respectable?
Understanding your own bias helps in the journey to obtaining truth.
Do you like scientific endeavors? Do you like knowing more about the world around you? Do you want to be politically involved? Do you want to learn, in the most general sense?
You MUST take your bias into consideration. Science requires objectivity. Politics require an understanding of both sides in order to be effective. Learning, much like science, requires a broad perspective, in order to see multiple concepts, which leads to the weighing of information against reality and our experiences.
We are not entitled to our opinions in the same way that we are entitled to an informed opinion. If your opinion is not informed, how can you be taken seriously?
