En el segundo programa de la nueva serie sobre pintura Renacentista ,el artista y escritor Matthew Collings camina en el misterioso mundo inventado de "El Jardín de las Delicias" de El Bosco , pintado hacia 1505.

Esta imponente obra , llena de extraños y fantásticos detalles, contiene una de las imágenes más famosas de todo el arte: un hombre con un árbol por cuerpo, que mira hacia nosotros desde la sección de la pintura que representa el infierno. El rostro del hombre-árbol generalmente se piensa que es el autorretrato del artista, sin embargo, como casi todo lo demás en Hieronymus Bosch - incluyendo el significado de esta, su pintura más famosa - nadie lo sabe a ciencia cierta.

Utilizando la última tecnología digital de alta resolución , Matthew Collings es capaz de explorar esta pintura extraordinaria en detalle y desentrañar algunos de los mensajes arcanos que Bosch ha tejido en él a través del uso de símbolos e inversiones inquietantes de escala - pájaros gigantes dejan caer fruta en las bocas de humanos desnudos , criaturas reptantes invaden el paraíso, un pájaro-demonio devora a un hombre entero.

Al igual que las imágenes de la pintura de Bosch eran inusuales para el Renacimiento, su técnica era también poco convencional para la época. Bosch trabajó rápidamente con manchas viscosas de pintura gruesa para evocar los detalles finos de los ojos de un pez o las espinas en la parte trasera de un puerco espín de algunas pinceladas. La vivacidad de la técnica de Bosch es una de las cualidades que hacen parecer su pintura extrañamente moderna.

El jardín de las delicias refleja la nueva forma de pensar sobre el mundo que el Renacimiento marcó el comienzo - ideas sobre el libre albedrío y la moralidad que cuestionaban el viejo orden religioso y que plantea una pregunta: tal vez el cielo y el infierno no son lugares donde tu alma podría terminar, sino estados del ser que están siempre dentro de ti?
