IVE BEEN WONDERING HOW IT WORKS IN PORTUGUESE my only question is do portuguese speakers hate it as much as spanish speakers do because every single person ik irl who speaks spanish despises neutral pronouns

#one of my buddies is nonbinary and they use ele/dele (he/him) in Portuguese and they/he pronouns in English #their reasons for disliking the elu/delu system are pretty similar to the ones listed above but they believe language will evolve.#Personally I believe language is a living thing and that gendered languages will slowly adapt to become more gender-neutral #of course that change is gradual (taking decades if not longer) and it's often more of a 'natural' process than an imposed one #but honestly. I don't really understand the resistance to that change from people who don't harbour transphobic views #respectfully but I don't think it is a 'disservice' or wtv. Language is not a pure thing that must be preserved as is at all cost.#We no longer speak the same Portuguese as Gil Vicente or Galician-Portuguese. We don't even speak the same as someone from 100 yrs ago #Kids often don't speak the same way as their grandparents even if they can mutually understand each other. Each generation has its quirks.#I understand it better if you tell me it feels unnatural to speech because that's not how we learned to talk.#It does feel much harder to use the elu/delu system in Portuguese than they/them in English because we're formatted to speak in binaries #but that doesn't mean it will feel unnatural to my grandkids.#I think it's a much bigger disservice to our language to have someone write 'compras-te' or some shit than to say 'amigue' or wtv #But I'm no linguist either #Btw to make it clear: even if it feels weird you should make an effort to use elu/delu pronouns if someone asks. It's okay to make mistakes #Anyway the point is. I don't despise gender neutral pronouns in Portuguese. Why would I accept other neologisms and anglicisms if I did?#(Also please don't take my criticism as like a moral thing bc that's not the case. I just don't understand why people get so sensitive #about this topic and attached to a language that has never been immutable or inflexible)

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
