Every true scientist knows that it’s much easier to divide by zero than it is to disappoint Granny.
My grandma: so I watched one of those marvel movies you keep telling me to watch
Me: oh really which one?
My grandma: Thor
Me: nice! Did you like it?
My grandma: yeah it was alright. Do Thor and Jane get married?
Me: uhhhhh
My grandma: do they get married in Thor 2?
Me: no spoilerssssss
My grandma: ok I’ll just assume they do
Me: *INNER SCREECHING AND SOBBING*

From what the trailer offers, this is a fascinating take on the superhero movie trope - but sadly, there seems to be hardly any places showing it. Grab the chance if you get it!

Contemporary fiction, no matter which medium, shows a worrying deficit of truly positive role models who display genuine kindness, humbleness, respect and compassion to others, and who will always find a peaceful solution to problems.
More often than not, when such characters do show up, they or their qualities are either ignored or ridiculed.
Can you think of characters or stories that are really good? Let’s give them a highlight!
i am SO SICK of unhappy endings. idk about anyone else but the #1 reason i like fiction is because everything can always work out no matter how bad it is. “what if the good guys lost” shut up. you are so fucking boring. give me happy endings or give me nothing

Thing is, you can make a very bold comedy out of such a gritty story, but it has to be very well-written. The makers of the movie pointed out repeatedly that this was what they had in mind: the characters were supposed to cope with the terrible things that happen in the story by joking about it (and failing, too). That’s how real people often try to manage things that are beyond their limits.
The problem is that the writing never brought that across. You have to be a tremendous comedy writer - comedy being known as the most difficult genre to write - to pull off what they had in mind, and the writing (and in some parts, the acting) never achieved that. The story didn’t make any sense, the jokes were more disturbing than funny, and they never gave glimpses into why a character makes a joke that is not happening out of happiness.
It’s really sad because this movie could have been truly unique in its approach, instead it was made into a half-hearted mass market story nobody thought about twice in its making.
movie pitch: a man watches his father die prematurely due to the actions of his brother, is then captured as a slave and forced to try and kill a friend, but escapes just in time to discover his older sister has slaughtered thousands of people (including all of his best friends of hundreds of years). The only way to stop her is to destroy his home planet, saving only a few hundred refugees who now all have nothing.
oh, and it’s a massive, brightly-coloured comedy where every line of dialogue has three new jokes in it

logical brain: Jane probably won’t be in Endgame, there are already so many characters doing so many things and I doubt that Marvel cares enough about her to find a place for her
hopeful brain that has never stopped loving Jane and can’t stop thinking about the Russos saying that her survival status is a spoiler: there’s a chance… theRE’S A CHANCE…

Did you see Tessa Thompson's 4% challenge? Do you think this will cause any major change in the number of women directors we see each year?
Yes, I did!
For those not up to speed actress Tessa Thompson gave a speech talking about how only 4% of the directors in the top 100 highest grossing films were women (this stat is pretty consistent year after year) and challenging her fellow actors to pledge to work with a woman director in the next 18 months.
I don’t think it can hurt. A lot of the actors and producers I have seen that are enthusiastic about this are already very supportive of women directors already including Thompson herself, Jordan Peele, Brie Larson and Paul Feig. But I do hope their enthusiasm and openness about this puts some pressure on actors and producers who usually don’t care about these things to start looking for more women to work with (looking at you Leonardo DiCaprio).
Also I think it’s always important to stress that that 4% number refers to the highest earning movies. There are lots of women directors around it’s just that their films are proven to have more difficulty getting funding, getting less funding then movies directed by men, have more difficulty getting into prestigious festivals, get lower paying and smaller distribution deals, all of which results in them earning less money IF they do make it into theatres.
I’ve looked at the Box Office Mojo stats. For a film to get into the top 100 highest earning films it usually has to earn about 25 million. To get into the top 250 highest earning films all it has to do is get close to 1 million. So few movies are able to accomplish that but I think if more prominent actors were willing to work with women directors those stats would go up.

What with all the New Year’s advertisings
... please remember that whatever you’re planning to do differently in your life, it’s easier to do it little by little. Those ads with their huge promises of questionable successes just want your money. If those products were really helpful, nobody would need them any more, right?
Please try to be kind to yourself. If you really want to change something, try small steps, and try to feel kindly about them as well as your progress (especially should you not make any, because that’s normal in all things). Appreciating what’s already going well, or looking for those things, is very much worth its time, too.
Happy, kind New Year!

Mary Poppins Returns is a movie full of heart, and while Emily Blunt brings in the perfect, magical Mary Poppins, it’s Lin-Manuel Miranda whose incredible screen presence establishes most of that heart right from the beginning. The best scenes are their combined scenes where these aspects of their characters come together, plus two special appearances in the end of the movie that are simply joyous (but spoilerous, so no more).

Maybe I’ve missed something here, but has Newt Scamander ever heard about “Accio Niffler”?
Edit to add: apparently he has, one hour into the movie.
