Protecting Plots of Philly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Philadelphia, like many cities across the United States, is going through a period of redevelopment, which can cause upheaval in communities. One organization working to help minimize this effect is the Neighborhood Gardens Trust, who, assisted by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, help preserve community gardens.
According to its website, the Neighborhood Gardens Trust “works with self-organized gardeners, community organizations, property owners, and the City of Philadelphia to secure ownership or long-term leases for community-managed open spaces”.
NGT also provides some support for gardens, like liability insurance, some improvements, and connections to assistance from groups like the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
“We’ve protected around 45 gardens around the city to date” said NGT Executive Director Jenny Greenberg.
NGT often works to permanently preserve land for communities.
“It’s like the city is essentially selling the land to us for a dollar, but what they do is they put what’s called a deed restriction on the land which means that you can’t develop it, like it has to be preserved as open space”, said Greenberg.
One garden NGT helped preserve is the Old Tennis Court Farm in Germantown.
Old Tennis Court Farm is a community garden which came to be around 2005.  It is located along Wissahickon Avenue, where the Germantown Friends School (GFS) once owned tennis courts.
Mark Kearney, a lead gardener at Old Tennis Court Farm said, “In 2015 the property owner, which was Germantown Friends School at that time, made the decision that they were going to sell it to whoever for whatever”.
Kearney and other members of the garden reached out to organizations including NGT and Natural Lands for help preserving their farm.  They organized a meeting between NGT, Natural Lands, members of Old Tennis Court Farm, and the GFS.  After some negotiation, GFS decided to delay the sale while Natural Lands applied for a grant.
Kearney said that the community worked to garner letters of support as well as their own fundraising in about a three week period.
“In the fall of 2016, the commonwealth awarded Lands Trust $225,000 for the purchase of the property.  The community had come up with another $70,000”, said Kearney.
After that, NGT began a lease agreement with GFS, which allowed the garden to start up again.  In December 2018, finally went to NGT.
Kearny said Old Tennis Court Farm’s importance is not just about growing food, “through something like this, people have the opportunity to not only get something out of it personally for themselves … but they’re also meeting people that might not have the opportunity to meet.”
Old Tennis Court’s gardeners are now planting for the 2019 growing season.

Huey and Jewelssea Sketch Scenes from Space to the Midwest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luke McGowan-Arnold and Juliana Concepcion have been making music in a variety of projects for most of their lives.  The duo, known as rapper Huey and producer Jewelssea respectively, met on Tinder in the summer of  2018 and started making music together in August of 2018.  Jewelssea now produces beats for Huey and is a DJ at their live shows.
Concepcion got involved with music at a young age.
“I went to this like music middle school in Philly and like everybody there, you had to do like choir and play an instrument and do music theory and music tech”, she said.
McGowan-Arnold also got an early start in his music career; “the first thing I ever did was I just like busked and like played folk songs under my name”.
From there, he played many of the same folk songs with a band, and later started a “jazz rap band” with classmates at Haverford College.  Today, as Huey, McGowan-Arnold makes music he described as “emo jazz rap”.
Huey and Jewelssea both bonded over an affection for lo-fi hip-hop, which is a genre the two see as an extension of 1990s jazz rap with a modern spin.  Like jazz rap, lo-fi hip-hop uses pop culture samples from movies and TV shows.  Huey described a particular appreciation for collections of lo-fi beats which invoke scenes, like “Raining in Japan” or “Raining in Tokyo”.
Concepcion, a Media Arts major at Temple University who also wants to work in sound installation said, “I guess that’s why I got into lo-fi hip-hop a lot is because of like, all the ambient soundscape-y type stuff that is in the beats.”
McGowan-Arnold also draws inspiration from impressionistic and abstract art  in creating his songs.
“When I make beats, I try to make beats that are very much in the moment, right? […] In terms of writing lyrics I see it also as similar where it’s like, very much about like, being in the moment and writing what is like literally on my mind in that very moment”, he said.
As for topics that have been on his mind recently, McGowan-Arnold said Huey’s lyrical themes include TV show references, books, and colors, as well as “space, not liking cops, [and] missing the midwest”.
Huey can be found on Facebook and Soundcloud under the name HUEY, the Cosmonaut. Jewelssea can be found on Facebook and Soundcloud as Jewelssea.  Their next show together will be on May 11th at DIY venue Haus of Yarga.

1) For the portfolio website project, I just wanted a place where the content I create can live online.  I think will be valuable to my future endeavors to have this place where people can see my work and contact me about it.  Of course, this will be targeted towards employers -- my resume is located on the site.  As a supplement, I have the rest of the website, including the portfolio section, which will make it easier for people to see the kind of content I can create.
2) I used a fairly minimal theme for this website.  The black on off-white will serve as a gentle way for folks to easily read my website.  Most of my fonts are sans serif, making them easy to read on screens.  My logo has the contrasting blue and yellow as well as a strong black to make it stand out.

(1) This social graphic served as a social media appetizer for my infographic.  I used some of the same information, represented in the same way, just on a smaller scale for this one.  This information is just the number of Clery Act crime statistics on Temple’s main campus in the three years listed.  This is based on a Temple News article about this information that comes out yearly.
(2) I kept the same general design as my original info graphic, as well as some of the information.  I wanted this to serve as a smaller version of the original infographic.  I changed the title so the information represented was more clear and kept the Temple logo so it was still clear that this was about Temple.  The graphic is a square to make sharing on Instagram easier.

(1) The information here is described in a recent Temple News article (previously linked). The article compared reported clery act crimes reported in 3 different years. Included that information and then a definition of the clery act. Then, because of my design choices, I thought another piece of information with a number would look good on the graphic and decided to include information showing a rise in disciplinary actions. Every year, Temple has to release this information and every year, the Temple News runs this article comparing statistics from previous years. The article also mentioned how there were no murders reported despite Jenna Burleigh being murdered off campus.
(2) First of all I designed my color scheme around Temple’s cherry and white using adobe color. I chose a font that resembled a college logo, but not too much. The more “fun” font I chose because it wasn’t too elaborate and it was significantly different from the other two, and my main font I chose because it reminded me of fonts Temple uses on their websites. I used the bubbles because they were an easily interpreted graphical feature. Often infographics highlight numbers and data in this way. The rectangular box was just a slightly different way of expressing this different statistic. I had to use a picture so I grabbed a .png of the Temple T and changed the color and opacity and set it in the background.
(3) a JPG of your final information graphic.

I heard about this story (tagged in my previous post) and thought this was super interesting and a great injustice.  I had the idea for the gif before I even knew what the company’s logo was.  I had previously envisioned an explosion engulfing the logo, but when I was looking through sprites for this, I couldn’t find an explosion that was big enough.  As I type this I realize that I could have potentially just shrunk the logo, but overall I am pretty happy with how my first gif came out.  The main design decision I made after the initial idea was which sprite to use and this one was really the only thing I found that was anything like what I had in mind.

(1) One paragraph that describes the news organization or publication for which you designed a mood board,
NPR (National Public Radio) is a public radio organization which syndicates programming to local radio stations all over the country.  They are known for crisp audio production and in-depth reporting which focuses on a wide range of topics.  They also largely support narrative formats and story-telling.  NPR produces its own programming and distributes programs made by local radio stations.  They also have effectively transitioned into the digital age by developing podcasts, many of which follow a format developed by NPR radio shows.
(2) one paragraph that explains the design decisions you made to represent that news organization or publication through your mood board
I kept my design clean and crisp as NPR programs are wont to be.  About half of my images are programs NPR produces and/or distributes.  These images are logos NPR uses for podcasts but two of these also exist as widely distributed radio shows.  I included an image of Terry Gross, the host of Fresh Air, because people often listen to NPR broadcasts without knowing faces behind the voices.  I included the radio tower because of their usual method of distribution, and I included the NPR newsroom to provide an image of the people working behind the scenes to make the programming happen.
