Minoxidil with Dermaroller
Minoxidil with Dermaroller.  We hear about this a lot and, frankly, we’re not convinced.  In fact, the tiny needles used to puncture your skin will, most likely, increase the chances of irritation from the Minox.  Tell us if you think we’re wrong, but we say ‘maybe not’.
Tumblr media
Minoxidil with Dermaroller
Are you using, or thinking about using, a dermaroller with your Minoxidil?  Maybe think again.
As far as we can find, there is no evidence that using a dermaroller with Minoxidil will have any greater effect than using the Minoxidil on its own.  In fact, because of the slightly invasive nature of the dermaroller, you may find yourself having some irritation from the tiny needles.
Using a dermaroller, your skin will be punctured, only a little, but punctured nonetheless.  This will only irritate your skin and you will bleed – perhaps only a little and perhaps because you might apply a little too much pressure.  Either way, this isn’t good.  Minoxidil is a TOPICAL solution.  ‘Topical’ (in this case, there are other meanings of the word) means “applied directly to a part of the body”, and when your skin is punctured, the Minoxidil will mix with your blood.  That really isn’t what’s needed.  Minoxidil shouldn’t be in your blood.
If you’re not familiar with dermarollers, take a look at the pictures on Google.  They are a little rolling device with tiny needles on the roller, designed to very slightly puncture the skin.  The idea is that your skin and hair follicles will be damaged, just a little, encouraging them to heal themselves.
We’ve also read of many people asking about missing a day’s Minoxidil treatment, in place of a day using the dermaroller.  No!  We say no.  You will simply further irritate your skin.  For the minority that do suffer some mild itching at the start of Minoxidil use, the irritation will only be greater.
There are one or two, truly horrific, pictures on Google, of those who have used dermarollers.  Search for it yourself, but be aware, there is blood.
Some Minoxidil with Dermaroller Science
We read blogs and forums a lot and have seen many folk either asking the question, or talking about using a dermaroller.  We’re not at all convinced.  A user on HairLossTalk.com says (referring to Minoxidil), “Its (Minoxidil) molecular weight is 209.248 g/mol while everything below 500 g/mol can penetrate the skin.”
Assuming that’s true, the absorption of Minoxidil in to your skin will happen just as well without any further encouragement – especially encouragement of such a damaging nature.
Sensible Application of Minoxidil
You don’t need the dermaroller and it will, most likely, it will cause irritation.  Maybe bad irritation!
Minoxidil has been studied, time and time again, in the USA and here in the UK.  It is approved for treating Male Pattern Baldness, but only as directed.  Follow the instructions for the best results from Minoxidil.
Wash and dry your hair thoroughly before application.
Apply twice every day, once first in the morning and once last thing at night.
Use the directed amount, 1ml of topical solution, and gently massage in to the affected area of your head.
Make sure your hair stays dry, free of sweat or rain, or whatever, for at least 2 hours, preferably 4 hours.

Bald Spot Treatment
Bald Spot Treatment.  Using Minoxidil to treat that bald spot on your crown is easy and, more importantly, it works!  As part of a healthy regime towards your hair, Minoxidil will transform how you see yourself!  Combine it with these simple ideas on being generally healthier, and having healthier hair!
Tumblr media
Bald Spot Treatment
That bald spot just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  It’s no joke.  As part of the, almost inevitable, process of Male Pattern Baldness, your hair will thin out around the crown and above your temples, creating the classic V forehead.
It’s all in your age and your genes, BUT IT CAN BE STOPPED!
There is a safe, proven and effective bald spot treatment!  Minoxidil is an excellent treatment for Male Pattern Baldness, with countless studies confirming the efficacy of the drug.  But you can help even more, simply by making yourself a little healthier along the way!  Our recommendation is to begin a regular regime of Minoxidil application, combined with one or two tips for improving your overall health, so improving the health of your hair follicles.
Which Minoxidil?  The Liquid or the Foam?
A lot of the answer is just personal preference, but there are a couple of ways to help you decide.  Both Topical Liquidand Foam contain the active ingredient, Minoxidil, and that ingredient needs to be applied as close to the hair follicles as possible.  That’s right on your skin.  See the application guide.
If your bald spot is now almost hairless, we would recommend the Foam, simply as it’s a little easier to apply and can be rubbed in to your crown easily.
If you are seeing the most hair loss along your parting line, you might be better off with Topical Liquid, as it is applied with a dropper (a pipette), so can be targeted more accurately.
So What Else Can I Do for Bald Spot Treatment?
Once you Minoxidil regime is in place, consider increasing your all-over health with these simple tips.  You’ve probably heard of most of them, but it doesn’t hurt to reiterate!
Consider Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements
Biotin, B-Complex, Vitamin C, Omega 3 Oils and L-Lysine have all been shown to be particularly helpful encouraging hair growth.  We’re not advocating ALL these supplements, but if you can add some of these to your daily diet, it’s all for the greater good!  All these supplements are easily available in shops and online.
Scalp Massage
There are a billion massage oils and preparations – including instant coffee! – available for massaging your scalp, but at most, they will simply make what hair is there, look a little better.  It is true that massage, itself, promotes hair growth, but you could do that with just your fingers.  Part of the application of Minoxidil is the massage action when using, so we think you’re OK with this one!
Lots of Water, Lots of Good Food
We know, it’s all so much easier said than done, but a change to your daily diet and routine could be exactly what’s needed when you start Minoxidil treatment.  Remember, Minoxidil works, but not overnight!  The prescribed, “twice a day” application of Minoxidil can be combined with a routine of healthier eating – and plenty of fresh water!
Sleep!
If only!  What with work and the family, sleep is something of a luxury, but if you can find the time, sleep as much as you can!  Sleeping is the body’s natural recuperation time, when the wear and tear of the day is fixed.  A good night’s sleep helps the body in so many ways, including your hair follicles!
Stop Smoking and Drinking
If you either smoke or drink alcohol, you’ll already know how those words sound.  But they are, undeniably, true!  Each glass of beer and each cigarette makes you body a little weaker, a little more defenceless and a little more prone to ageing.  If stopping is just too much, try to cut down on your intake, knowing one missed cigarette might just be one more healthy hair!  This is an NHS page about quitting the filthy ash!

Minoxidil is More Popular than Ever
Minoxidil is more popular than ever.  And its growth is showing no signs of slowing down as more and more positive results are proven, confidence in new medications increases, the ease of buying and costs get lower and lower.
Tumblr media
Minoxidil More Popular than Ever
And its popularity is showing no signs of slowing down.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  “The proof”, as they say, “is in the pudding.”  Basically, the popularity of Minoxidil is growing, because it really does work!  It is inexpensive, easily available, easy to use and it genuinely stops hair loss, dead in its tracks.
But perhaps the biggest reason – and this is just our editorial opinion – is the ‘cultural shift’ in thought towards Male Pattern Baldness.  For older men, the idea of regrowing new hair has been shrouded in clouds of scams and ‘snake oil’.  Personally, I grew up thinking all hair restores were just… lies.  But medical science is a constantly changing – and improving – field and huge amounts of time, money and effort have gone in to scientific research in to hair loss in the last 20-30 years.
For younger men however, the idea of hair loss isn’t inevitable.  It’s quite treatable.  Also, plenty of studies have shown that early treatment of hair loss massively improves the effectiveness of Minoxidil.  So those younger readers benefit twice!
So perhaps the younger men will embrace Minoxidil easier, and the more mature men will, perhaps at first, treat it with a little caution.  We understand this.
This report from last year states, “The global minoxidil market is slated to post high growth in the forthcoming period.”and “The popularity of minoxidil can be gauged by its success rate and that is men experience hair regrowth after 3-6 months”.  (You’ll need to pay for the whole report, though.)
And Global Market Insights says, “Global alopecia (hair loss treatment) market was valued at more than USD 7.2 billion in 2015, which expects to exceed USD 10 billion revenue by 2024.”
Why is Minoxidil so Popular?
Put simply… because it works!  Minoxidil is a vasodilator, a chemical which widens your blood vessels.  Originally developed to treat those with high blood pressure, the effects on hair loss were almost accidental.  Minoxidil will increase the blood flow to your follicles, allowing for better health and better hair growth.
It isn’t a “cure”, it’s a treatment.  That means it won’t just cure your bald head overnight, with one magic pill.  Minoxidil needs to be massaged in to the scalp two times every day to maintain any prevention of hair loss and regrowth of new ‘terminal’ hairs.

Minoxidil for Eyebrows
Minoxidil for Eyebrows.  Minoxidil stimulates hair follicles, be they on your head, your chin, or your eyebrows.  Apply Minoxidil carefully and follow the instructions and within 10-12 weeks, your brows will be significantly thicker!
Tumblr media
Minoxidil for Eyebrows
While Minoxidil was designed for those looking to grow head hair, the same effects will occur on any part of your body that grows hair – including your eyebrows.  Minoxidil works by increasing blood flow to the follicles in your skin, regardless of on your head, chin, legs, back or eyebrows.
The main reason 5% Minoxidil is recommended for men is that, in women, 5% application will cause extra hair growth where ever it is applied.
Application of Minoxidil to your Eyebrows
BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE… BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN APPLYING ANYTHING CLOSE TO YOUR EYES!
For eyebrows, we recommend the Topical Solution, not the Foam.  This is because the solution is much easier to apply to smaller areas with the dropper (or pipette) supplied.
The application guidelines are, almost exactly, the same as for your head.  First of all, wash your eyebrows with a gentle soap and fully dry them.
Take 1ml of Minoxidil in the dropper and dab it gently on to both eyebrows (1ml is more than enough for both brows).  Be careful… if it gets in your eyes, it stings.  Wash your eye thoroughly with warm water.
With your fingertips, gently massage the Minoxidil in to your skin, from one end of the brow to the other.
Repeat this routine twice (2 times) per day and your brows will show some significant thickening in around 10-12 weeks.  Expect a small amount of ‘shedding’ in the first week or two, this is a normal part of the process of getting rid of old, weak hairs and replacing them with healthy new ones.  Read more about shedding here.
Once you have applied the Minoxidil, leave it alone!  For at least 2-3 hours.  If it gets wet, of you wear a low hat, or anything that might get in the way of the Minox, you will not get the best results.  Leave it alone for as long as you can to do its job.
Minoxidil for Eyebrows – for Men or Women
This article may appeal more to women, than men.  For many women, plucking their eyebrows is a daily task, but today’s trend for bushier brows has left many women, perhaps, regretting the plucking.  For many women – especially those who have been plucking their brows for many years – there may be little that can be done, but if your brows do continue to sprout after plucking, there is still a great chance of reviving those old follicles.

Minoxidil Side Effects
Minoxidil Side Effects
Minoxidil is safe.  It has been approved for ‘over-the-counter’ sale for the treatment of Male Pattern Baldness in the United Kingdom by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and in the United States by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
That said, a number of Minoxidil users have reported some mild irritation, especially on first application.
One Thing to Mention…
This isn’t a ‘side effect’, as such, but can happen in a number of cases of Minoxidil use, particularly at the beginning of treatment.  The dreaded “SHEDDING”!  It isn’t what you think, though.  Read about why you could see an increase in hair loss when you first use Minoxidil.
Side Effects May Include:
Skin Itchiness and Irritation.  This can include a mild burning or stinging sensation, accompanied by skin redness.  If this happens, it will occur directly where the Minoxidil was applied.  These conditions, if they happen at all, will most likely be at the beginning, as you skin adjusts to the treatment.  If these effects persist for over a week, or two, or worsen, contact your doctor.  If your doctor has already suggested you use Minoxidil, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. The majority of people using Minoxidil do not have serious side effects, very many, none at all.
Rare Side Effects.  Very rarely, this medication, which is absorbed in to the body through the skin, can cause side effects. Stop using Minoxidil and speak with your doctor if you suffer any of the following side effects:  unwanted facial or body hair, dizziness, fast/irregular heartbeat, fainting, chest pain, swelling of hands/feet, unusual weight gain, tiredness, difficulty breathing especially when lying down.  It must be stressed that these conditions are very rare indeed, but are possible.  You may be intolerant of the drug.
Serious Allergic Reaction.  Massively uncommon, but you just may have a proper allergic reaction to Minoxidil.  Such a reaction to this drug is rare, but seek medical help right away if you suspect any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Minoxidil Foam vs Topical
Minoxidil Foam vs Topical Liquid Solution.  What is the difference and which is best for you?  We explain why there are two version, the difference between them and why you might choose one over the other.  Many have their preferences, for various reasons.
Tumblr media
Minoxidil Foam vs Topical Solution
What’s the Difference Between Minoxidil Foam vs Topical Liquid Solution?  A good question!  Read on and decide which looks best for you!
The Topical Liquid Solution of Minoxidil was the first of the two version to be introduced, over twenty years ago and, while showing very favourable results with slowing hair loss and regrowing new hair, a small number of Minoxidil liquid users reported mild itching and irritation on their skin where the solution was applied.
This irritation was quickly identified as being a result of a compound called ‘propylene glycol‘, an ingredient which helps the scalp absorb the active Minoxidil ingredient.  Some people do have some hypersensitivity to propylene glycol.
As a result, the Foam version of Minoxidil was developed, without propylene glycol.  Skin irritation, redness and itching are very rarely seen in patients using Minoxidil Foam, as opposed to a handful with some slight side effects with Topical Liquid Solution.
The effectiveness of both Foam and Solution has been shown, in medical trials, to be the same and the Minoxidil content is the same in both versions – 5%.
If you have very sensitive skin, you may want to consider the foam, as it can be a little less irritating.  We also think the foam is a little easier to apply and carry around, as there’s no ‘dropper’ (pipette) to worry about.  But that’s just our opinion.  For everyone else, the Minoxidil Topical Solution is the right choice.
Also…
In our experience, Foam tends to be easier to apply to larger areas, like the bald spot on the crown of your head.  Topical Liquid is applied with a small pipette, or dropper, so covering a larger area might be a little more fiddly.
Conversely, if you’re looking to increase hair growth along your parting line, for example, the dropper is just what you would need!
Beards too!  One problem with Foam on beards is the active ingredient, Minoxidil, is likely to be covering the hairs themselves, and not the skin where it is needed.
Other than the chemical differences mentioned above, the application has an impact on which Minoxidil to buy, but put very simply, Foam for top of the head and other larger areas, Liquid for beards and parting line.
In Conclusion
As stated above, Minoxidil Foam is less likely to cause some mild irritation in those with a hypersensitivity to propylene glycol, or with generally sensitive skin.  Topical Liquid is a physically smaller product and is applied with a dropper, allowing for more precise application.
If you feel you may have sensitive skin, Foam would be the one to start with.  However, it is possible that the liquid form has a better absorption because of the epidermal disturbance due the propylene glycol.  But that’s only a ‘possible’.  The question remains unresolved until further human studies are initiated.

Effectiveness of Minoxidil
The effectiveness of Minoxidil is not in doubt.  It has been shown to have clear and visible results in halting natural hair loss and significantly encouraging new hair growth.  In cases of Male Pattern Baldness, Minoxidil is a highly effective remedy.  Approved by the governmental agencies in the UK and USA, Minoxidil is the ‘number 1’ treatment for hair loss in men.
Tumblr media
Effectiveness of Minoxidil
If you have yet to try Minoxidil for your hair loss, the most important question is probably, “Does it work?”
In short, yes!  Minoxidil has been proven – medically proven and approved – to be effective in slowing hair loss and encouraging significant hair regrowth in cases of Male Pattern Baldness.
Approved by FDA in the United States and by the MHRA, here in the UK, Minoxidil is an ‘over-the-counter’ treatment for Male Pattern Baldness.  You may have heard of the FDA (the “Food and Drug Administration”) in the United States. The MHRA is the UK Government’s closest equivalent, the “Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency”.  Minoxidil is also recommended by the American Hair Loss Association. As far as we’re aware, there isn’t a UK equivalent.
Effectiveness:  Minoxidil works most effectively for roughly two thirds of men. The most significantly noticeable results are seen in men under 40 years and those who begin treatment in the very early stages of hair loss.
How to Use Minoxidil:  Apply Minoxidil Foam or Topical Solution twice a day.  Make sure your hair is dry and clean when you apply and make sure it stays dry for as long as possible afterwards – a minimum of four hours is recommended.  The best times would be after you morning shower and last thing at night.  Apply Minoxidil directly to the areas affected.  You won’t see an immediate change – it doesn’t happen overnight.  Some studies have shown noticeable regrowth in as little 8 weeks, although the largest segment of success studies are seen around the 16 week period.  Be patient.
What it Does:  Minoxidil is an ‘antihypertensive vasodilator’ medication, originally used as a drug to treat high blood pressure.  It works by widening the hair follicles, causing thicker strands of hair, and by prolonging the active growth phase of hair (called the ‘anagen’ stage) resulting in much longer and higher number of hair strands.
What it Doesn’t Do:  Minoxidil is not a ‘cure’ baldness.  If you stop using it, your hair will begin to thin again, to a point apparently greater than when you began the Minoxidil treatment.
Minoxidil Side Effects:  Thankfully, the side effects of Minoxidil are relatively rare and slight.  You may have redness, itching, dryness, flaking, or other scalp irritation, though this is uncommon. Skin irritability is more likely when using the stronger 5% solution.  Minoxidil Foam tends to show fewer side effects in patients because of the exclusion of ‘propylene glycol’, a substance which helps the scalp absorb the active, hair-growth compound.  Read more about Foam vs Topical.
The March of Time
As a man gets older, the multitude signs of aging are inevitable, although many can be slowed down, or even stopped.  One such is hair loss.  Often more associated with older, perhaps ‘middle-aged’ men, Male Pattern Baldness can begin long before we might think.  As WebMD puts it…
By age 35, two-thirds of American men will have some degree of appreciable hair loss and by age 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. About 25% of men who suffer from male pattern baldness begin the painful process before they reach 21.
They specifically mention “American men”, however we think men in the US and quite the same as men in here the UK.  Let’s just read that again, 66% (two thirds) of men will show some signs of baldness by the time they are just 35 years old and, incredibly, a quarter of men with hair loss are showing the signs BEFORE THEY REACH 21 YEARS OLD.  21!  That’s almost a child!
If you are in your ‘more mature’ years, it may well be the case that you will never regain the full, lush hair you had when you were 18, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something you can do about it!  You could consider a hair transplant, but here at MinoxidilUK, we’re not overly happy with the idea of expensive surgery, particularly when there is a much less invasive method.
Minoxidil has been proven to slow down or stop hair thinning, and even grow back some of the hair you thought had disappeared forever!

Start Minoxidil Treatment Early
As a man goes through the prolonged stages of Male Pattern Baldness, the follicles stop growing new hairs and, eventually, they die.  Once a follicle has died, nothing can be done to restart its hair growth.  Minoxidil will work on old, damaged follicles, but not absolutely dead ones.
Tumblr media
As soon as you notice the stray hairs on your pillow in the morning, check you hair for thinning at the temples, crown and parting line (if you have one).  If you see any loss of hair or see more scalp, then right now is the time to begin using Minoxidil.  The earlier you start, the better the results.
As the follicles in your skin slow down the production of new hairs, they become weaker and weaker and eventually stop functioning all together.  Once the follicle is dead, it will not grow any more hair, at all.  This is why we keep saying that Minoxidil is not a “cure”.  It is a treatment which will, without question, stop further hair loss dead in its tracks, and promote new hair growth in follicles that are still active.
If you’ve been as bald as a bowling ball for the last 30 years, you may be beyond the reach of even Minoxidil.  If you’re just beginning to see the first signs of Male Pattern Baldness, do it today!  It will work!
Make Minoxidil a Routine
Getting in to a Minoxidil routine is important.  Once you’ve decided to start, keep with it.  Applying the foam or solution two times per day, to clean dry hair, will absolutely promote new hair growth, and will be quite visible within about 12 weeks.
It’s always far easier to say than to do, but if you can, make your Minoxidil application pat of your daily routine.  Let’s start with your morning shower.  Clean and dry your hair thoroughly and dribble 1ml of Minoxidil from the dropper on to the affected areas of your head, massage it in gently and style as usual.  If possible, try to avoid anything that might make your scalp sweat for at least four hours.  If you sweat, the Minoxidil will dilute and be less effective.  There is also some frequent mention that one should try to stay out of direct sunlight for the same four hours, but we’re not sure about that.
At night, repeat the same procedure.  Wash and dry your hair (it really is important that your hair is clean and dry before applying Minoxidil) and massage another 1ml in your scalp.
Read more about the best application of Minoxidil.
Whats that ‘Shedding’ I Keep Hearing About?
That’s right… as a normal part of its working, in the first week or two, Minoxidil will cause your follicles to shed any old, weak hairs, ready for new, stronger, thicker ones to grow.  Shedding is s common complaint and, possible the biggest reason people will stop using Minoxidil – however wrongly.  It is part of the process of getting fuller terminal hairs growing and not something to panic about.  Read more about shedding here.
