Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 2-1
Chapter 2: Summer preparations.
Part 1
Prev || Next
T/N: (1) Japanese schools typically start summer break much later than Western schools, so that's why they had an entire semester's worth of exams before summer break and why they haven't gone home yet
āWait, ā¦ā¦.hmā¦ā¦?ā
Facing his luggage, which is unusually disheveled for him, Hirano groaned.
Even as he turns the bag heād started packing in preparation for going home inside and out, he canāt find what heās looking for.
āNot here either, huhā¦ā
He has not a clue where they might be, and he tilts his head at the unexpected turn of events. Heād of course checked the floor, as well as in the bed, the hallway, and even the dining hall.
He always takes them out before he goes to sleep, so there canāt possibly be that many places he couldāve left them. But unfortunately, once something becomes a habit, you stop thinking about it while you do it.
Itās probably not that he put them in a different place from normal after taking them out, but there might have been something out of the ordinary.. In fact, last night Hanzawa had suddenly come over.
Although heād come inside after hurriedly knocking on the door, he didnāt seem to have anything in particular to do, and had been acting strangely. He had looked uncomfortable too, butāhad Hirano taken them out by that point?
He canāt remember clearly.
As he recalls, Kagiura came to this space and was loafing around, saying how nice the freshly washed sheets felt. Thanks to him, theyād gotten all wrinkled, so Hirano had scolded him and made him set them straight.
Because Kagiura hadnāt put the sheets back on before bathing unlike Hirano, the mattress pad was uncovered. Hirano had made him put them on immediately afterward, saying āeven so, that doesnāt mean you go invite yourself into someone elseās bedā.
Even if he tries thinking back, he canāt remember the gist of his own movements.
Both the left one and the right one are gone, so the probability that they fell out is low. The backings werenāt loose, so itās also unlikely they got caught on something. And yet he canāt find them anywhere, a situation that has him scratching his head in frustration.
āWhatās wrong? Hirano-san.ā
At the sound of the voice that rang out from beside him as he spaced out, Hirano noticed his roommate for the first time since heād returned.
āOh, welcome home. Itās not a big deal, but I canāt find my earrings. I thought they fell somewhere around here, though.ā
When he added as an afterthought that he doesnāt take them off outside, so they must be in the dorm, Kagiura crouched down to the floor.
āIāll help you look for them.ā
āThanks, but itās fine. Iāll find them on my own. Keep an eye out just so you donāt step on them though, okay?ā
āGot it. But itāll be a problem if you donāt find them, right?ā
āYeah, but itās not like the piercings will close up if I donāt wear them for a day or two. That aside, Kagi-kun, I thought you said youād be doing free practice today once you got back from dropping off your school bag. You promised your friends youād be there, didnāt you?ā
Under the blazing sun with summer vacation just around the corner, Kagiura apparently still goes on runs despite club activities having ended. Heād exclaimed as much when theyād run into each other at lunchtime.Ā
He was probably venting the stress from the final exams. For Kagiura, unskilled at studying, heād probably been quite run down by his poor showing on the midterms.
With the support of Hirano, for whom taking care of his kouhai was no struggle, heād been able to get through them safely, but they were scores that he, even as a sports recommendation student, couldnāt brush off, so he had, as he put it, āstudied as a hard as a student preparing for entrance examsā.
Club is on break today because the advisor, current captain, and incoming captain were at a meeting at another school. It is an act of mercy given the temperature, but for Kagiura, whoād just managed to get through exams, it is not fortuitous timing.
āAh! ā¦..Iām heading out.ā
His head snaps up, suddenly fidgety as he remembers.
Heās energetic in spite of the heat.
As he wakes up every day with him and comes to understand his daily routines, Hirano has nothing but admiration for the overwhelming differences in their physical activity.
āSee you later.ā
At the sight of Kagiura rushing out the door, Hiranoās face suddenly falls.
Ever since he came here, the moment he leaves, the room feels unpleasantly silent.Ā
No other pair in any of the other dorm rooms is a match for his relationship with his roommate, who has completely opened up to himāa fact of which Hirano is proud. He feels it all the more strongly for having been in the kouhai position himself a year ago.
There is just one more week until summer break.
It got a little too quiet.
Hiranoās family home, which houses their family of three, is seldom lively, as his father is quite reticent.Ā
They all get along, and from his point of view as the child, theyāre a happy family, but itās a little lonely for someone who has gotten used to living in a group with age-mates.
āI didnāt think anything of it last year, thoughā¦ā
Mumbling his grievances, he stands and stretches his aching back.
In his line of sight is the terry cloth blanket rolled up on his kouhaiās bed, in disarray as if to illustrate his trouble with getting up in the morning.
On the off chance that his earrings ended up here, Hirano cautiously searches the sheets before fixing them back in place, but unfortunately they are nowhere to be found. His ears were pierced with titanium earrings, the downside of which is that theyāre not particularly shiny, so theyāre difficult to find in situations like this.
Reluctantly, Hirano re-packs his bag and gets started on his homework. Heās preparing for the summer term prep school course. Besides that, thereās also countless practice exams.
There is not much leisure time in the summer breaks of high school second years.
Itās not like heās spending the entire time applying for intensive courses, and he has more time to hang out and go places compared to usual, but the passage of time is most definitely changing from last year.
As long as Kagiura can graduate, heāll probably also get into college with a sports recommendation.
His gaze going soft at the pointless supposition, Hirano begins solving the problem set.
As if he has entered an empty space cut off from the world, the cries of the cicadas outside become distant. The blood is rushing in his fingertips, and the point where they touch the shaft of his mechanical pencil feels prickly.
Preparations for the cultural festival will begin tomorrow.
In the short time before summer break, each class will work out their plan and divide up the tasks amongst themselves.
It takes a fair bit of time to determine the details of the project. If their plan does not pass through the two-step audition process of an initial document screening and a secondary interview, they will not be able to proceed with it.
That said, events must be limited in the amount of space and materials they are allotted in order to have a high application-to-acceptance ratio. In effect, one could say the classes are like food truck vendors competing with one another for curb space.
For that reason, during this period, when they take charge of the cultural festival planning committee, there are times when theyāre so swamped with work that they complain that even studying for exams is easier.
The judging panel consists of representatives from each classās planning committee, the student council, and a faculty member in charge of the event. The festival judging, which is hard on both those doing the judging and those being judged, will start this week.
Hiranoās class, 2nd year class E, has already started narrowing down their plan, and are contriving to get it past the judging as quickly as possible.
Their plan is to make a haunted house spanning two classrooms and the hallway beside them.Ā
They will remove the door and insert a passageway, using a bigger space than one would typically imagine for a culture festival program and making it difficult to tell how often the lurking āghostā will appear. The person playing the ghost will work the distance between the entrance and exit, in order to decrease the risk that someone will find out where theyāll be ahead of time and lose interest.
Under the circumstances of blocking the corridor, it will be a one-way street, so implementation of their plan is limited to the vicinity of the staircase, and they must carefully consider emergency exit routes.
The amount of time it takes to prepare the classrooms is enormous, and on top of that they will be dressing in costume, so the amount of enthusiasm they are putting into the cultural festival is considerable.
Even Hirano, who is among the less ardent group, finds his spirits raised.
Now then, what about Kagiura?

So. At this point I think most of us has seen the kagihira extra from Sasaki to Miyano vol.9 and have screamed at Hiranoās obliviousness. I think it really says something about kagihira that they can act like THAT and there STILL isnāt a consensus about whether or not theyāre dating at this point. So I tried to remember if thereās a similar instance in Hirano to Kagiura that can give us a clue, because I donāt know either.
But first I checked the original Japanese to see how accurate a translation Hirano using Kagiura as a āpick-me-upā is. The word is ęÆęć (ikinuki), which means something like relaxation, take a breather. Also, when Hirano thinks āMan, Iām beatā the original Japanese is ćē²ćććŖā¦ć(tsukaretana). ē²ćć means āworn out (as opposed to sleepy).ā So where the English version makes me think that the energy Hirano gets from looking at Kagiura as like from an energy drink or something, the Japanese is a bit more like the energy you get from taking a break. (Nothing against the translation - 100% accurate translation is impossible and āpick-me-upā is a nice way to translate it in a way that sounds natural.)
So Hirano gets relaxation from looking at Kagiura. That sounds familiarā¦
Seeing Kagiura smiling face makes Hirano relieved. Also, looking or thinking about Kagiura just generally makes Hirano happy at this point.
Hereās what I think: Hirano is, at the time of the extra, very aware of the effect Kagiura has on him, probably significantly more than he is at current point in the manga, though he does know that making Kagiura happy makes Hirano happy, so who knows really. However, given that he doesnāt really act nor react any different in any other significant way, thereās sadly a good chance that he hasnāt realized that itās romantic. (I can also easily see Kagiura asking Hirano if someone has confessed to him even if they arenāt dating, so thatās no help.)
Itās just. They arenāt really acting differently from where they are at current point in their manga. Hirano wanting to see Kagiuraās face when heās worn out isnāt all that different from where heās currently at in manga. But they always act so much like theyāre dating that I canāt conclude anything.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation
Chapter 1: The first time.
Part 2
Upon putting away the shared vacuum cleaner and returning to his room, the dust on the desk and shelf stands out to him as much as the freshly-cleaned floor. A mop might work, but pencil marks are difficult to remove. Now, where are the wipes?
āKagiura-kun, do you have a dust rag over there?ā
When Hirano calls out to him, his kouhai diligently responds.
āYes, but itās pretty dirty, so Iāll go wash it. Please wait a moment.ā
The cloth that he shows him is indeed pitch-black, as though it had been used meticulously. It shouldāve been brand new, though.
āItās fine, Iāll just use it real quick.ā
āNo, you donāt have to!ā
Before the words have even left his mouth, Kagiura rushes off to wash the cloth. How diligent of him, Hirano thinks, impressed.
It has already been a month since he started living with his new roommate. This is Hiranoās second year of living in the dorms. For his kouhai, who had recently graduated from middle school, it must be his first time living in such a way, but his days pass by peacefully, without any apparent friction.
Many students went home for Golden Week, and Hirano and Kagiura were no exception. While they cleaned their room upon returning to the dorms on the last day of the break, Hirano was suddenly taken back to the beginning of the year. Although they tidied up every day, it was the first time since then that theyād done any deep cleaning.
Although the rooms assigned to the second years are the same as last year, naturally they were cleaned more thoroughly before the arrival of the new students. The day after he returned to the dormitory on April 1st, Hirano was informed of Kagiuraās arrival, and he became increasingly busy with preparations.Ā
Additionally, Hirano is not skilled at communication. Although it isnāt a problem once he gets used to them, it takes time to open up to someone heās just met, and heās aware that his appearance and behavior make him seem unapproachable. Heād discussed with Dorm Leader Hanzawa, who knows of the situation, how to deal with his kouhai; theyād decided using a nickname was a high hurdle but that calling him āKagiura-kunā would be fine. However, this did not ease his nerves.
Incidentally, āKagiura-kunā is a bit of a mouthful. Iād like to find a way to make it flow better, he thinks, but it would feel too awkward to shorten it so early in their relationship.
Since third year studentsā single rooms are customarily vacated by mid-march, the senpai Hirano had been rooming with last year moved in early to create an environment suitable for self-study. Because of this, Hirano had spent a term living alone, so to suddenly return to living with a roommate put him on guard. As a result, he hadnāt slept well the night before Kagiuraās move-in date, and slept in the next day until heād arrived.
Not only about waking up, Hirano is by nature not good with mornings. Nevertheless, he takes pride in being able to wake himself up if he has appointments and such, so to sleep in on the day his kouhai was to arrive of all days was a frustrating situation. Thanks to that, even though he went to the trouble of consulting Hanzawa, he couldnāt exactly say they got off to a good start.
Even so, Kagiura readily adjusted to him, so upfront that anyone can see he adores Hirano. Despite having trouble with mornings, he diligently gets up early for morning practice every day, and got used to all the regulations that are now a part of his daily life, all without complaint. According to his basketball clubmates, he is a newcomer who had high expectations placed on him even before entering the school, and who practices more enthusiastically than anyone else.
Other than thatāhe is probably bad at studying.
Just the previous day, when heād seen Hirano and Sasaki at school, heād asked āwho was that with you?ā, to which Hirano had replied āhe sucks at studying, so I let him see my notesā, and Kagiura had grimaced.
ā.....I suck at it too.ā
His expression as he said it was so disheartening that Hirano was worried.
āAre your notes all right?ā
High school teachers erase the words on the blackboard quickly, so students copy notes without understanding the contents.
As he had expected, Kagiura appeared troubled, averting his eyes.
āWhenever I miss something, my friends let me see their notes.ā
Hirano didnāt intend to scold him, but whenever he confirms something thatās troubling him, he canāt help but get preachy.
āI see. Well, do your best. Donāt fall asleep in class or anything.ā
Kagiura nodded soberly at the words Hirano tacked on as a joke.
This response was blatantly suspicious. Unlike in compulsory education, exam results are reflected in promotion from high school.
Hopefully everything goes wellāfor now, it all depends on the first semester midterms coming up in mid-May. The schedule is not generous with the sports festival at the end of the month, and the narrow scope of the exams makes it difficult for first-years to make a difference in their grades under normal circumstances.
ā¦That should be the case.
There is a reason Hirano could not let his kouhaiās unsettling reaction slide. After all, thereās someone close to him who sleeps in class or plays hooky.
He came late today as well. Sasaki Shuumei, a repeat offender of late arrivals.
They had been in the same class last year as well, and he frequently missed notes. Hirano lends Sasaki his notes time after time, but all he sees is Sasaki answering questions wrong on the homework for the following week.Ā
It isnāt reflected in the results so much as it makes him wonder, what the hell is he copying?
As it happens, theyāre in the same class again this year.
He wouldnāt say so himself, but Sasaki is, for better or for worse, an eye-catching guy, with too-brightly dyed tawny hair and a large number of piercings.
His features are well-defined, yet the look in his eyes is harsh; he has little interest in doing anything and spends most events spacing out, not trying to hide his boredom. To his classmates, heās the type of guy that canāt open up to others. Just the fact that someone of his stature is so unsociable makes him seem intimidating to those around him. That being said, his actions arenāt nearly as bad as the first impression he gives. Despite his gaudy appearance, heās been heard saying āI donāt wanna get into fights, since Iām not good with them.āĀ
If one had to guess, theyād say heās bored with school. He doesnāt seem to have any hobbies, though he sometimes talks about music with friends and seems to enjoy himself, but thatās about it.
When Hirano arrives at school as usual, Sasaki, who was again late from first period, asks, āHirano, let me see your notes for English.ā
Although he would normally just lend them to him, Hirano, upon careful consideration, offers him an exchange instead.
āSure, but in exchange show me your math notes.ā
Hirano, who never copies notes unless heās absent, isnāt quite sure what preparation strategy Kagiura should take.
Nevertheless, Sasaki, who likewise never takes notes, can do math.
If he can grasp the key concepts of math, as opposed to any other subject, then Hirano may find some tips for teaching Kagiura.
āHm? Uh, I guess, butā¦why? Will you look at my answers for the homework?ā
āOf course not, dumbass. I just think my roommate might struggle with studying. I want reference material to help teach him.ā
Math is third period. Sasaki, who is a terrible student but still brings his textbooks and notebooks to and from school, has his study materials precisely on time. He doesnāt forget anything at home.
āHere.ā Sasaki hands him the notebook, and Hirano, upon opening it, heaves a sigh. Itās as he expectedāor should he say, predictably incoherent.
Exactly which part of this did he get from my notes?!
Rather than a copy of the blackboard, Sasakiās math notebook has a single formula written in large letters, next to which was some strange math marked with an ć. It seems as if heād abbreviated what was on the blackboard, but Hirano canāt tell what number itās supposed to be. Everything after this is just problems being solved earnestly. There are no notes regarding the explanations and examples given in class.
What the hell is this?
āHey. What do these circled numbers mean?ā
āOh, those are the textbook page numbers.ā
āAhā¦I see.ā
āThe explanations and examples are just gonna be written in the textbook anyway, so itās too much of a pain to take notes on them. Itās fine if I just look at the textbook.ā
I see, so theyāre more or less cutting corners for a reason, Hirano thinks as he recalls Kagiuraās notes. Even though they have some things in common, like not taking notes and being bad at studying, their tendencies are completely different. Kagiura seems to freeze up and write unevenly as soon as he gets to a part he doesnāt understand, while Sasaki seems to omit unnecessary parts when he understands the material.
Sasaki tilts his head curiously at Hirano, who is deep in thought.
āYouāre awfully enthusiastic about this, arenāt you?ā
āNo, this is normal.ā
Thereās no way he can sit back and do nothing while his kouhai roommate is struggling. At least Kagiura doesnāt dig his heels in when he thinks he canāt do something. Normally, if he fumbles on content that suddenly got more difficult, his earnest and hard-working nature is enough for him to recover.
āItād be nice if you showed this much of an interest in my studies, too.ā
āYou havenāt been trying to improve over the last year, you know.ā
āAhaha. Even so, Hirano. No matter how motivated you might be, if heās not good at it, heās not good at it.ā
āKagiura-kun isnāt like that.ā
Heās seriously hard-working, after all, Hirano thinks, shoving Sasakiās math notebook back at him. Sasaki gapes at him, taken aback. He canāt make sense of Hiranoās reaction.

Hirano to Kagiura Ch. 4 Analysis: What Kagiura treasures
This is the chapter where Hirano takes Kagiura to a basketball match as his birthday gift and Kagiura makes his first attempt at confessing to Hirano.
Thereās twice in this chapter where Kagiura reacts in a way that confuses Hirano or Kagiura a bit. The first one is Kagiuraās reaction to getting the keychain souvenir:
To which Hirano says āā¦? Oh, sure.ā
The second is when Kagiura explains why he gave Hirano a crepe and Hirano says that he loves that sort of thing:
To which Kagiura wonders āā¦Why did that almost move me to tearsā¦?ā
These two reactions are mostly surprising in their relative intensity, with Kagiura being genuinely really happy to receive a silly keychain and being almost moved to tears by a simple statement. I think both of these reactions come from the same place - how Kagiura wants Hirano to be a part of his family. Weāre told how gift giving is a fairly common thing in Kagiuraās family:
Itās also in this chapter that weāre told that Kagiura loves the relationship that his parents have.
Both of the reactions are to something Hirano does that means that, for at least this aspect, Kagiura can have his parentsā kind of relationship with Hirano - he gives an extra souvenir to Kagiura just because and says that he likes this kind of thing. Kagiuraās family means a lot to him, so anything Hirano does that mirrors the aspects that Kagiura likes in his family would obviously matter a lot to Kagiura.
Itās no wonder that when Hirano said he had a lot of fun at the basketball game (another thing that Kagiura loves) right afterwards Kagiura couldnāt help but confess.

So guess who just learned today that:
(Yes this is a horrible picture but pls excuse it)
This will not be leaving my mind for some time now because it fueled some brainrots
Its always been a reccuring thought to me how Hirano and Kagiura at the surface may look like their personalities are very different but that's not actually it.
We have Hirano who is a member of the disciplinary committee and is pretty diligent and straight-lace.He follows the rules regularly and tends to do everything by the book despite having bleached his hair blond. He's closed off and other people tend to find him intimidating.
Then we have Kagiura who is a member of the basketball team. He's carefree and is more sociable. He's very honest, straightforward and tends to be well-liked by other people and is in general an easy person to get along well.
At first glance they look like the classic introverted nerd and extroverted jock dynamic but there's actually more to it especially when you notice how some of their interest and personality actually overlaps.
We find out that back in middle school Hirano actually used to be in a sport team of his own and that he was in the track team. And Kagiura may not be that good at studying but I heard he's at least good at biology and he seems to have an interests in stars too.
Not only that they both are hardworking, competitive and very determined when it comes to getting what they want. They also are very decidated to what they do(Hirano spends his weekends studying in the library and likewise Kagiura also does the same by playing basketball despite not having practice during those days)
They both clearly have a goal in mind and are very decicated to making it come true which lead to them both coming and meeting in the dorms.
Both are two sore losers who hates losing and are also intelligent in their own ways but can also be dumb in certain aspects.
Because i love them a normal amount(yeah definitely) I sometimes think back to their animal images to find more things to think about when im waiting for a new chapter every month and seeing how Hirano's is a gray wolf and Kagiura being a shiba inu it definitely connected some dots in my head and finding out now how Shiba inus are closely related to wolves only encouraged many thoughts too.
It only started of as me thinking of Hirano being a gray wolf may be hinting that his home situation growing up may have been very different to the one Kagiura grew up in.
Kagiura obviously grew up in a loving family full of people who were really close to one another and tho he was a middle child im sure he still grew up receiving tons of love and care to be the kind of person he is today.Domestic dogs like shiba inus tend to be kept as pets and when they have great owners they also grow up receiving lots of love and everything they need to grow up as adorable doggies who deserve all great things in life.
In contrast to Hirano who has a wolf animal image.Wolves are creatures who lives in a wild and has to deal with harsher things to survive like tough weathers and having to hunt their own food to eat.Wolves as i heard actually tends to avoid human interactions too so with all these in mind i like to think there's a possibility of Hirano growing up in a tough and strict environment, maybe he was also sheltered or didn't get much chance to see the outside world(this also makes me believe why he's said to be into planes cause if i were to see it in a child's point of view planes are amazing because they get to go anywhere)
As harsh as he's possible living situation may be I don't think he grew up fully receiving zero love cause as I remember he seems to get along well with his parents although we sadly don't know much about how things are between his other relatives.
It doesn't even need to be his home life maybe middle school was hell for him too and he didn't have much friends.Alot to think about really.
This also just leads me back to how despite being an only child Hirano seems to be pretty independent and self reliant on his own and also manages to take great care of others(like a wild wolf taking care of the members of his pact).I dont like to believe that Kagiura is helpless on his own since im pretty sure he can manage himself,he just like being taken care of and spoiled by Hirano(like a domestic dog who was treated with great care growing up) but out of the two of them Hirano seems like the most reliable one.
Anyway im gonna wrap this all up by ending it with how much I love that at the end of the day Hirano and Kagiura are different enough to have lives outside of eachother yet similar enough to get along well and balance each other out and also bond over similar things.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation
Chapter 1: The first time.
Part 1
Translation notes: sooo yeah I wasn't kidding when I said I'd do it myself lmao. This is my first time translating a whole novel for posting so I'm not too confident in how it'll work out but š¤ I'll do my best!
For some reason, the narration is split between present and past tense in ways that I can't make sense of, so to make it read better I'll just be using present tense. I hate present tense tho so I might end up switching to past. Feel free to let me know if I should keep it present or change to past!
Even the way the train sways is different, on a route that he doesnāt usually take. Of his middle school classmates, Kagiura Akira was the only one to decide to live in a dorm, despite the fact that his new school is within the prefecture. This is because it takes two hours to get to his school from home. In his position, for which early morning practice is essential, he has no other choice.
He had been the first to request to move into the dormitory on opening day, April 2nd, a little before the school entrance ceremony. He gets along with his family well and living at home is cozy, but heās strongly looking forward to living in a new environment. Heād had his bulkier items delivered, so his only luggage is one shoulder bag. Heād moved out without a care.
This is the first time he has taken this train alone since the entrance exam. During the school entrance proceedings, he was accompanied by both of his parents, and as such talked to them without paying attention to the scenery.
The empty seats on the early afternoon train were impossible to miss, but Kagiura had chosen to stand in front of the door. While gazing at the changing scenery through the windows, unexpectedly green storefronts and streets flashing by, he heaves a sigh of relief.
A different type of excitement from the times he stayed over with his club for training camps and competitions wells up inside of him.
Theyāre probably on their way home from club practice, he thinks, gaze drawn to the jersey-clad high schoolers that board the train, their schoolsā names written on their backs.
No one here is from the same school as me.
While reading out letters of the alphabet in his mind, the train arrived at its destination.
The student dormitory that Kagiura is moving into is a fifteen minute walk from the school, and the closest stations are different. There are two types of dorm rooms: two-person and four-person. He is moving into the former.
Dorm leader Hanzawa is acting as a guideāhis eyes, narrowed since they exchanged greetings, give the strong impression that he always maintains a smile. He laughs frequently as they chat while passing through the dining hall, baths, and other facilities.
āRight, right, everyone basically uses āsanā with each other in the dorms, so you can call me āHanzawa-sanā.
āHanzawa-san.ā
āWell, most of the students call me Dorm Leader, though.ā
āReallyā¦?ā
Chuckling as he watches Kagiura try to figure out which to call him, Hanzawa puts on a veiled smile and continues his explanation.
āBasically, itās dorm tradition to call everyone but your friends āsanā. Even the office staff. Itās not a firm rule, but out in society everyone uses āsanā, so it also serves as practice for that.ā
āHuhā¦do you not use āsenpaiā at all?ā
āRoommates donāt use it much.ā
āI seeā¦ā
āWeāll talk about the details at orientationāoh, speaking of which, your roommateās name is Hirano Taiga, a second year like me. I believe itās mentioned in the pamphlet as well, but first and second years share rooms. I think the point is the ābuddy systemā. If thereās anything you donāt understand or thatās troubling you, you have a buddy you can ask about it.ā
āRight. About Hirano-sanāā
Just as he is about to ask āwhatās he like?ā he is cut off by a voice shouting from behind them āHanzawa-saaan! The phone!ā The voice belongs to a clerk from the dorm reception desk.
āIām coming. Sorry Kagiura, but can you get to your room by yourself? The rooms are numbered, so you should be able to find itā¦ā
*No sooner have the words left his mouth than he turns on his heel, and Kagiura quickly nods.
āSure, I got it. Thank you very much!ā
He watches as Hanzawa hurries off. Dorm leaders must be busy, he thinks with admiration as he climbs the stairs.* His room number is written in the documents Hanzawa had given him, so he has no problem finding the room.
I wonder just what kind of person the second year student Hirano-san is.
I hope heās kind, he thinks, once again struck by homesickness that had been coming and going.
Up until just last week I was wearing a middle school uniform, but Iām about to start living with someone I havenāt even met yet. I wonder if Hirano-san is part of a club.
If heās in the basketball club, I have tons of things I wanna ask him. Even if heās not, he might have some friends in it. Since heās living in the dorm, he must be far from his parentsā house. I wonder where heās fromā
Kagiura thinks these things while walking, and soon finds his assigned room. He lightly knocks on the door, and it opens quickly.
āAh.ā
Before he can even get his greeting out, he finds himself eye-to-eye with the person who opened the door.
āAh?ā
Reflexively. Kagiura flinches at his glare and the suspicious tone of his sharp voice.
This person seems like a delinquent. Heās blonde, the look in his eyes is sharp, and looking closely, his ears are pierced.
āUm, from today Iām in your careā¦ā
āOh, you must be Kagiura-kun. Sorry, I overslept. The dorm leader isnāt with you?ā
Put that way, the scratchiness of his low voice is indeed characteristic of someone whoād just woken up.
āEarlier he was called away by an office worker, so he only told me about our roomā¦ā
āI see, sorry about that. ā¦Come in. Take off your slippers here. You can change them for the ones inside.ā
Leaning down, Hirano pulls his own slippers into the corner to make it easier for Kagiura to change into his. The polite gesture was a complete turnabout from his rough initial impression.
Oh. Maybe heās not so scaryā¦in fact, he seems kindā¦
His chest gradually begins to feel hot. It seems to warm the part of him that admitted to being lonely.
āThank you very much. ā¦Hirano-san. For the next year, I hope we get along.ā
āAh, nice to meet you, Kagiura-kun.ā
Even after unpacking a set of luggage that had arrived early, his desk is half-bare without textbooks to fill it. The uniform hanging in the space for clothing is just a little big, with the expectation that heāll get taller. The overwashed and tattered sheets are soft to the touch and seem like theyād feel good to throw himself down onto.
The space that Kagiura surveils will be his usual living quarters from now on.
Even though my parentsā home is in the prefecture and I can go home on the weekends if I want to, itās just not convenient if I want to devote myself to club activitiesā
ā...Kagiura-kun, are you okay?ā
āHuh? What do you meanā¦?ā
āNo, itās just, you seem a little tired.ā
āItāsā¦not that.ā
āI see,ā Hirano murmurs, falling silent.
Kagiura softly gets to his feet and peeks over at the other side of the room, where Hirano sits facing his desk. In complete contrast to the flashy impression given by his blonde hair, his studious profile shows no traces of having overslept.
After all, he is an advanced student.
Most of the students in the dorm are in the advanced course. Although his first impression was that Hirano was a delinquent, watching him study with careful posture makes Kagiura think he is a diligent senpai. And his well-defined features stand out, giving the impression that he is difficult to talk to.
What should I do when I get hungry? Kagiura suppresses the urge to ask, instead feigning interest in his desk. With the dorm usage pamphlet spread out, he contemplates how to go about filling his stomach.
Due to getting a lot of exercise, Kagiura is quick to hunger. Despite their limited pocket money, dorm students are forbidden from getting part-time jobs. The purpose of the establishment is so students can focus on their studies and club activities, so itās to be expected.
I wonder if I can get seconds?
In the meantime, Kagiura had begun to doze off.
A gentle tapping on his shoulder has a soothing rhythm that makes sleep all the more pleasant. When a voice like a lullaby calls to him, he is flooded with relief upon realizing itās not a teacher.
Kagiuraās growing body craves sleep, and he falls asleep whenever he gets the chance. He tends to doze off during class, to the exasperation of his middle school teacher.
āHey, get up. Or Iāll leave you behind.ā
He shakes his head, sleep disturbed by the feeling of someone poking his head.
Cut it out, Iām awake, he thinks, shaking his head peevishly, now suddenly wide awake.
Right, this person isnāt a teacherā
āKagiura-kun. Get the hell up.ā
Shooting upright just as Hirano prods him again, he hears Hiranoās voice say āwoahā in his ear.
The one whoād woken him up from dozing at his desk had been none other than his roommate, Hirano, the senpai one grade above him.
His sparkling blonde hair is reflected in Kagiuraās sleepy eyes, shining beautifully. In that moment, he nearly murmurs that color suits you. Unfortunately, his tongue is jumbled from just waking up.
Hirano doesnāt seem bothered by Kagiuraās incessant blinking as he pulls on a parka over his t-shirt.
āItās almost lunchtime. Do you wanna go together?ā
āYes!ā
His first meal in the dorm is delicious. If itās like this every day, Iām going to enjoy myself here, he thinks. They sit facing each other as they eat, exchanging detailed self-introductions. Hirano listens intently as Kagiura tells him about getting into the school based on recommendation for sports as a left-handed player. He doesnāt seem the type to smile and make pleasantries, but the conversation doesnāt need to be lively to flow comfortably.
But on the way to his mouth, Kagiuraās fork freezes.
The flavorās good, butā
āYouāve been at it for a while now, but youāre not good with peppers, are you?ā
With a jolt, Kagiura tries to move his chopsticks as prompted, but he canāt bring himself to do it.
ā..........Yes.ā
Hirano stares at Kagiura, who hangs his head, concerned but unsurprised.
ā..........Until I graduate, Iāll conquer them for you. Pass them here.ā
As Hirano reaches out his chopsticks and nimbly snatches up Kagiuraās leftovers, he seems to Kagiura to be glowing with a halo. How is he, just one year older than Kagiura, so good at caring for others?
ā........Thank you very much.ā
Through his full mouth, Hirano only mutters "it's delicious".
Certain he would be told off, Kagiura is taken aback by Hirano's kindness.
I might like this senpaiā¦..
His brusque manner of speaking is completely at odds with his behavior, and Kagiura's heart is beginning to warm up to him. It is just a feeling, but he is getting the sense that this year is going to be fun.

āAll I see are tulips and Iām a hummingbird,
Heavenly ambrosia in every curveā¦ā
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me so much of KagiHira that this has become the (un)official KagiHira theme song in my head (or at least Kagiās theme song whenever he thinks of his lovely Hirano-san <3)

I feel like an underappreciated part of kagihiraās Valentineās Day Incident is the buildup to the fight. The fight is painful (on purpose) and ch.15 is worth all the squeals and screams, but no one (that I have seen) have commented on how everything in ch.14 up to the fight sets things up for things to happen as they did.
Admittedly, itās not really obvious. It is, after all, also the chapter that gave us this:
Nothing in the chapter before the fight give us any indication that theyāre going to fight. Hirano is telling Ichinose (his sempai) how he genuinely wants to stay with Kagiura, and from Kagiuraās talk with Niibashi I get the sense that while Kagiura really wants to be dating Hirano, heās pretty happy with where things are currently. But that just makes the fight hurt all the worse.
There also isnāt really anything before the fight that has to do with the things that each of them apologize for in ch.15.
Theyāre both very aware of what they did wrong during their confrontation and I donāt think either of them have anything other from the fight that they need to apologize for.
So why am saying that what happens before the fight in ch.14 sets it up? It shows that the two of them have very different ideas of what it means to receive chocolates on Valentineās Day.
Ch.14 consists of what is essentially three scenes, with the first two mirroring each other. In the first two scenes, Hirano and Kagiura each respectively: meet someone they know; receive chocolates; talk about their current situation with their roommate and is asked whether or not theyāre truly alright with staying as roommates; affirm that they want to stay roommates; and think about their roommate after their conversation partner is gone. The last scene is the fight, where once Kagiura returns to the dorm and gives Hirano a brownie flavored protein bar, he notices the chocolate Hirano got from his sempai and they argue about it.
Aside from the receiving chocolate part, the parallel scenes are there mostly to twist the knife when they fight (we KNOW how much they care for each other so why are they fighting?!?) and to set up them making up in ch.15. But what I want to talk about is how the way they receive chocolate made the fight as bad as it got.
While Kagiura feeling jealous is definitely the catalyst for the fight, it wouldnāt have gotten so bad if they didnāt have such a mismatch between their ideas of the importance of Valentineās Day chocolate. Like, Kagiura has JUST softly rejected someone by rejecting their chocolate (and likely not for the first time either).
On the other hand Hirano got nearly expired chocolate from someone who happened to have some chocolate he couldnāt eat,
so Hirano doesnāt get why Kagiura would even think that there could be a deeper meaning behind Ichinose giving him chocolate.
To be fair to Hirano, there really wasnāt and Kagiura was also very casual about giving his āchocolate.ā But the point is that when Kagiura sees the chocolate from Ichinose, heās very much in a mindset of āgiving chocolate on Valentineās Day means having feelings for the otherā while Hirano is at most thinking that thereās more chocolate going around than normal. If Kagiura had thought of the chocolate from Ichinose as friendship chocolate, heād likely have a better handle on his jealousy and if Hirano had been more aware of the romantic connotations of Valentineās Day chocolate heād been better at dealing with Kagiuraās jealousy.
TL;DR ch.14 sets things up so the fight will be as painful as possible by showing how much they care and giving them completely different views on Valentineās day chocolate
