I keep seeing all these posts about Pix and Joel being the last two rulers in Empires and it's giving me a Thought:

Joel has never been religious. Pix knows that. The man doesn't even believe in magic, a thing he's seen actively used - it only makes sense that he wouldn't be quick to believe in an afterlife or anything of that sort. But...Pix has started to see him by the Vigil. More and more, usually at night, when the square is deserted and he thinks he's alone. He'll fly in and just stand there, silhouetted in the flickering flames of far too many candles, and look at it without moving a muscle. Pix doesn't mean to pry...at least, not the first time. But he's taken to watching from his window. To make sure the other king doesn't get attacked by a mob in the darkness, he tells himself - but really, it's a different kind of worry. Maybe not quite worry. More a shared sort of sadness, for what they've both lost, and for the times that drove someone like Joel to stand mourning at the feet of a god he does not believe in.

Pix only saw him there for seconds before leaving, at first, but as the nights grow colder he'll linger some days until nearly dawn. He talks, sometimes. The names keep changing - it's himself he's talking to, ridiculing, or it's Lizzie, telling her softly about his day or asking question after ever unanswered question until his voice breaks, or it's one of the others, or no name at all - but always, always, he faces the Vigil. Pix doesn't mean to overhear. But he shouts sometimes. He cries sometimes. He stays until he falls silent, out of embarrassment or exhaustion, whichever comes first. And then he flies away.

Pix never mentions it. He doesn't want to drive Joel away. Maybe this is helping him, in some way, whether he thinks the Vigil can hear his prayers or not.

Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe he just needs someone to hear, and Pix can be that for him, when there's nothing left to cling to.
